I have posted a video from Jason before and people loved it. So here we go, another wood turning belter for you all and it really is wood turning at its finest!
About a year ago I went to film Jason at this shop/workshop in Cardigan, West Wales. He has a lovely shop where he sells all kinds of beautiful craft work, mainly his but some of other local crafts men and women.
In this video, Jason is turning a wooden bowl. He starts off with a rough block of wood that he turns to roughly to get the majority of the material out and to get the bowl to roughly the correct shape. This wood has to then go and get dried for the best part of 3 months. The reason for this (from memory of what Jason said)...

A few months ago I was fortunate enough to get a factory tour of the Dr Martens factory in Northampton, UK. It was amazing. I couldn't believe how in around an hour a pair of boots going from pieces of leather and rubber to a famous iconic boot. Here the finishing touches are being made to the famous Dr Marten boots. The PVC soles are being trimmed giving the ribbed effect. It's amazing to see how such a simple process gives the boot those finishing details.

All I know is that every pair I’ve had that said made in Vietnam, was defect… not just Dr. Martens, but every brand, defect if made in Vietnam. Even the China pairs are higher quality. Always the shoeeyelits, never symmetrical. Always uneven on one or both shoes, one shoe being taller than the other, and it seems it’s how the upper is being comnected to the sole that’s the issuebaw to why it’s crocked or not symmetrical, and it’s realy visible!
what I don't understand till this day: NPS shoes produced the shoes in their factory under the brand Doc Martens till '93 or '95 (license expired then?). So: who produced them after '93 / '95 until the production went overseas? And who exactly makes the more expensive 'made in England' now? Are they made at NPS again...?

About the same, the solovairs felt nice but somehow the MIE docs looked better on my foot so I went with them. Will last forever

Hi Achal, either brazing or welding is suitable and both will be sufficiently strong. The difference comes with the thickness of the steel tubes. Since welding melts the parent materials together, the tubes have to be thicker and therefore the bike weighs more. With brazing a filler material, usually brass, is melted and bonds the two pieces of metal together. Therefore the tubes are thinner and lighter. Both are strong enough, but both are different in other ways. I think brazing was used in old times since the temperatures are lower, it was easier for people to achieve those temperatures before. Welding required expensive equipment and therefore wasn't used as much. Hope this helps.
You can tig weld a soda can, so the tubing only has to be thick enough to carry the stress that it will be subjected too.

This looks very similar to the Dr. Martens How it’s Made video published some years ago and still viewable on RUclips. I have been wearing Doc’s for ten years now. My favourite, MIE 1460 with fish skin inserts. Those are real head turners. Imagine my surprise and delight learning recently that there is an option to Doc Martens. Made in England, very high quality, a shank and muted stitching. I am very happy I discovered Solivair which has renewed my interest in the English made Gibson style shoes. Indeed the Southeast Asian version of Doc’s aren’t very good compared to the MIE products. I will be buying Solivair shoes going forward.
I’m about to order a pair of solovairs and the new mie docs don’t have a shank, I bought a pair back in February and they are a good boots but not for the price, I never got to experience old docs cause of my age
You can have a shank put in during a resole on Docs. If they're ones that are worth resoling.
Thats literally because this factory is the one where they made the original docs once up on a time where they still were called "doc martens by solovair".
I agree that steel is still the best. Aluminum is cheap and light....and wears out through fatigue. Carbon fiber is light and strong but forget repairing it if it it is damaged. I have also seen enough CF joints that broke to realized that they may look good on the outside but often have voids or weak spots. I am an old time bike racer (70s and 80s) and have luged steel frames which are really nice and artistic. I also have a lugless tandem race frame build by the legendary Berrnie Miikkelson in California. The joints on that bike are works of art....every joint is a smooth flowing transition that is flawless. Best part of a lugless brazed frame is that if crashed and damaged, the tubes can easily be replaced and brazed again. Luged frames are a lot more difficult to disassemble and repair those joints AND maintaining structural integrity of the metal.
The Asian made pairs are horrible. I’ve had 3 of the actual Made in England pairs over the past 25 yrs. I do need another pair but the originals are getting harder and harder to find in my size (Men’s US 12) , not to mention the re-sell value is ASTRONOMICAL right now
I’ve can’t comment on the Asian made pairs but the British ones are brill. Mine are going strong after a good few years, not quite 25!
Why brazing and not tig welding which is way stronger?
I’m not entry certain but I think there’s a few issues where welding isn’t always the best option. When brazing, since the parent material isn’t melted, it holds it’s material properties. With welding the metal becomes weaker on the heat effected zone. Another area to consider is with brazing, smaller diameter tubing can be used, which overall reduces the mass of the bicycle. You can also file back a brazed joint giving a visually much better appearance. I think the above reasons are why brazing is often chosen over welding for bicycle frames.
Brazing is plenty strong for bicycle frames.
Brazing is used in the Indian sub continent for the rickshaws and bicycle van frames. I have personally loaded a touch over 815kg on a cycle van plus myself on top (65kg) and have heard of over 1000kg of heavy industrial machinery being transported on them. I assume they've realised that from all the common forms of welding, brazing is the strongest, although everyone refers to it here as 'pitol' welding which actually means brass... which I think is a mis reference to the actual rods they use. They look brassy in colour.
It can also be filed down to five the look of invisible seams.
Did you see the amount of brass ? That amount of brass is as strong as tig would be.
