OutKast Farm is a Coastal Bermuda Hay farm that is constantly trying new techniques, herbicides, and insectides to improve the quality of our product. This channel is to share information for other producers to enhance their operations.
I'm Jennifer, and my passion for farming came from my father. He and I baled hay together for the better part of 20 years. He passed away suddenly on July 17th 2021. This left a lot of responsibility on myself to continue on. I now operate the cutter, tedder, rake, and sprayer. As well as, any insect scouting and routine maintenance. My husband Anthony has always helped with equipment repairs and has now taken the drivers seat as baler operator.
Thanks for supporting my channel!

If 2024 was a video, all the struggles!
2024 has been an up and down year. Drought has slowed us down to a crawl. Nitrogen was applied and then no rain came, rain finally came and blew out all of the landscaping, a flat truck tire, whew! It goes on and on.

2nd Cutting Bermuda Hay July 2023

Battling heat and then, surprise, showers coming in from the coast, we got it all done. This is a look behind the scenes and outside the tractor cab. All the work that goes on just to get those round bales in the barn.
The Best Piece of Equipment I Ever Bought! Rondini!
Просмотров 99211 месяцев назад
It was the best piece of equipment I ever bought. I was tired of watching my tractor rust away. Spreading nitrogen is a must in a hay operation, but it doesn't come without its own problems. The Rondini sqtf 600 solved all of the nitrogen nightmares. The product is applied where you want it, on the ground, not on your tractor. Total Game Changer.

1st cutting of 2023 was delayed 2 weeks because of unsettled weather. We finally hit the field, the field hit back. I came out of the first cutting black and blue. Check out the Krone 46T rotary rake. We still have some adjustments to make.

Red makes better hay, but you already knew that 💪
@FarmallFanatic I like them all. Availability is slim in our part of the world. I wish I could have some of each so I would have a broader knowledge but it's a john deere and Kubota world in SC.
@TheJfitch Kubota here too...nice tractors
I sprayed 3 on my second cutting. With hay not going for much in my area I’m just going to mow until winter.
@@chrisworks1877 I'm almost in the same boat. I'll hopefully get my 2nd cutting next week. This is the most expensive, non-productive year ever.
😁😁👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Passion Legacy, Tradition...absolutely PERFECT 😉😉😁😁😁👌🏻👌🏻
OOPS!!!!! Didn't do that last season?
@@crslyrn It was a recap of the oops. I saw the video clip again and couldn't help but shake my head.
Also that damn wheel is gonna snap in the back
Probably so. 150 gallons was stretching it.
Camera in wrong place, cannot see what you are doing.
It was a difficult thing to do, I certainly could have moved the camera closer, but you know horses. They'll wiggle and trample everything. First I applied Epson salt gel to the entire hoof. Secondly, I wrapped an ace bandage around the entire hoof. Third, I wrapped my vet wrap around the whole hoof. Fourth, I put my pre cut duct tape sole cushion on. Fifth, I wrapped the whole hoof in duct tape. It worked well and alleviated all of the daily soakings.
Been there many a time trying to put down the fertilizer ahead of a rain & had the same results over the years. Looks like a really nice tire plug kit. Lucky you caught the nail in the tire at home vs. when away from the farm. Thanks for the ride alongs. Take care.
@crslyrn Thanks for stopping in. This has been a wild year but we know that going into a new season. They're not always fun. The tire kit was awesome! And it was definitely by grace I found that nail at home. That was a true silver lining. ❤️
How did the Rezilon work?
It has worked great. I've been using it since it was released. My initial schedule was February and September applications. I have adjusted that to February and after my first cutting in June. It provides coverage for my harvest season which is June through mid September. I do the 2 split applications of 3oz each.
Apparently a bright royal blue attracts yellow deer flies really well. I saw a video where they used blue solo cups. They covered it
@ericjohnson8001 That's good information to have. It's a constant battle with the bugs and every simple strategy is well worth it. Thank you for sharing.👍❤️
Did it seem to make a difference?
It did. It really made a difference with the vaseygrass. The pre-emergent made the most improvements with the foxtail. There are not many options for vaseygrass in Bermuda, and this was definitely a good strategy for that.
Is this system still working good for you?
Yes it is. I really enjoy the user friendly features. The unit is holding up well and I have had zero issues with the software. Everything operates as it should. It's a really nice unit.
@@TheJfitch Thank you for responding and making the time for an informative video! I'm looking at a couple of units and this may be the way to go.
@donniehutto5665 anytime. Always glad to share information and hopefully take some of the confusion out of trying to make a decision. I know the feeling. There's so much stuff out there, it's hard to decipher. And thank you for taking time to watch the video.
Looking good! How did you guys make out on square bales? Find some good horse customers that want clean hay like yours and those square ps will be worth it.
Thank you. We were averaging 50 bales per acre on our best field and 41 per acre on others for 535 total. I have thoroughly enjoyed this adventure
Great looking hay. Hope you all have been well.
We've been doing great. I hope your hay and cattle business is treating you well.
Way to get after it there gurl. Hay looked really good. That's a pretty nice baler setup there. Glad you were able to get the nitrogen down ahead of a rain shower to help things along. Thanks for the ride along. Take care.
Thanks Ron. It has been a whole learning experience and so much fun.
Hay looks great. I’d love to know a cost per acre for what’s being sprayed, I guess I know it’s easy to spend a fortune on chem to make clean hay but at what cost and can you really recover that cost vs just having a few unwanted weeds/grasses.
That is a very real point. The cost of everything is sky high and if it wasn't for foxtail, some variable grasses would be acceptable. When I was just keeping bushes and briars out of the fields, it was a lot more enjoyable. But when foxtail moved in, it turned everything on its head. It's a real rock and a hard spot situation.
Goog to see you are doing what you need to do..... We managed to get a big enough window to accomplish !st cut in the shed, the nitrogen applied, and managed to bale a loal to deliver;..... Clint uses urea because he doesn't want to use liquid nitrogen in his Iva Sprayer
Good to hear from ya! I'm glad yall were able to lay some down too. Wishing you guys a great hay season. Keep up the strong work.
What tips do you have for someone that is cutting hay for the first time
I would decide what type of hay I am wanting to produce. For many years we cut whatever the land produced and that worked for us for a long time. Then we started spraying herbicides to reduce bushes and briars. Slowly we have evolved into producing a particularly grass. You just have to know what you want your final product to be and what your needs are. It costs a lot of money to go across those fields, so make sure you are getting some return on your product. Secondly, don't go equipment broke. Use what works and grow into newer, different things. Third, make sure your hay is dry. Don't get in a rush. If you have mixed grasses, unfortunately their drying times will be different. So be cautious of baling too soon. Fourth, you will get out of your soil what you put into it. Soil fertility is key no matter what you're growing. Fifth, weathermen are notoriously wrong, mother nature supercedes everything, and remember to have fun.
How well did this perform on the knotroot foxtail ? Thanks for sharing this
It worked great killing what was above ground so you got a good cutting but it certainly didn't kill the roots. The plants slowly came back. I have found that 8oz/acre glyphosate in combination with 1.5 oz/acre Pastora worked wonderful. The Bermuda grass tolerated it well.
Do you think your Facet L did a good job on your knotroot foxtail ? Having a big problem here with it in bermuda hay. I also am using Rezilon early season and thinking about adding a second after first cutting, like you if I can get the rain
The Facet did decent to clean up for the next cut but it didn't kill any roots. So over time, they began to regrow. The best thing I have found is 8oz per acre glyphosate with 1.5 oz per acre Pastora. That mix really helped clean up the field. It didn't yellow any of the Bermuda, but it was slow to reach mature height.
Hi, can you please let us know the chemicals you are using, thanks 😊
Yes, 8 ounces per acre glyphosate with 1.5 ounces per acre Pastora.
Looks like my horse trying to give him worm medicine. He does the same thing.
It's can be so frustrating especially when they spit it right back out. They're worse than children. ❤️
It's hard for me to give him anything by mouth. Which is very frustrating.
We regularly get 80 mph spring winds with storms...how does this not blow away? Worried about it blowing on its side and injuring the horses.
The strongest winds we get are around 30mph. So, I can't speak for anything any stronger. The hut weighs about 230 pounds, so it it is fairly substantial and with the openings on each side, wind can pass through.

Thanks for the ride along. I see the pup called "Shotgun" again. LOL How's that GPS setup working out for you in the fields? Take care.
Thanks for stopping in Ron. You know that pup has gotta ride. The GPS is awesome. It's simple and I love it.

Thanks for watching and dropping a comment! Have a good one. 👍
That’s one way of doing it! 🤣🤣🤣
Yes!!! 😁
Looks like a really good product to have for your operation there. 👍🏻 Should be really handy when doing the spraying & broadcasting products on the fields. Especially once you have all of your fields mapped out on the device there. 👍🏻 Looks like you've become the Russ Thomas Spokes Model. 😁 Take care.
Thanks Ron. It is quite handy and I really benefitted from the tilt compensation feature. That was a feature my old Raven was lacking and made it more difficult to be accurate. Russ is great. I really enjoyed purchasing, and hopefully promoting, his product.
Jennifer know more about those than I do, lol! Great job!
Thanks Russ! It's a great product. Thank you for making it available to us.
How has it held up and can you mark multiple boundaries with it
It has help up nicely. The unit itself is in great shape and the software is still sharp as brand new. I'm not sure if you can do multiple boundaries but I will get you an answer. I've only done a single boundary at a time.
That is super cool
Thanks Tim. It's a very easy to use system.
Looks nice what’s the cost I was hoping you would tell us.
The current price on the blackbox air + with a 9" screen is $1,995.

@@SLCFarms Awesome! I just did a quick browse and saw that pricing on farmparts4less.
Love your channel. Post more videos. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Yep, farming is a lot more than just sitting on that tractor & lookin' pretty. LOL Taking the time to go thru the equipment & getting it ready to go to the field is the difference between being able to keep rolling across the field getting the job done & sitting in the middle of the field broke down waiting for the repairs to be made. Thanks for the ride alongs. Keep up the good work there.
You right !! SC heat ain’t no joke with the humidity

I just recently purchased a Krone 38t and I have to fully agree, the book isn’t much help at all!
You got that right. And there's nothing online to give you any guidance either. 😳
We decided to cut what had regrown back and savage maybe enough to recoupe the last appication of fertilizer.....It also provided a a chance to test the new Krone Round baler on it's ability to handle short hay...... There is a a great difference, in the bale formation and also in the way it feeds the bale during rebaling...
I saw you guys had a new baler, and I was curious what you thought of it. Keep us posted on it please. Can't wait to see its results next season.
Krone uses different feeding and bale formation technics ,,,,,,,,,,,From what we have seen so far it will also aid in the constant unrolling and feeding the rebaling process.....
thanks for the video! WE did not have much rain delays in the hay field here in Oklahoma this year!
Thanks for stopping in Paul! Our weather gave us a run for our money this year. I know a lot of folk were crippled with drought. We were fortunate in many ways. Glad to hear from you. ❤️

Enjoyed the video 🙂
Thank you so much!!! 💓
How long do you keep wrapping it? How do you know when it is completely better?
I keep wrapping it until the abscess emerges or the pain begins to subside. Not all abscesses make a visible whole when they "blow out", so I give it ample opportunity to remind soft and medicated while it's wrapped.
Looks like a pretty good spreader there. Thanks for implement review & the ride along. Take care.
Never seen anything like that , that’s pretty cool 👌
Wish you posted more often. Would love to see a review on this spreader after a few years. My concern is the number of failure points, and the grease spots. You were open cab without a mask, that is a plus.
Thank you so much for stopping in the channel. I appreciate hearing from any and everyone. I will certainly keep updating on the status of the spreader, especially after some wear and tear. I have to be completely honest too, I have never even considered wearing a mask while spreading fertilizer. All the fields fertilized and wildlife plots we've planted, - never. It's something to consider. 😁 ❤️
That is amazing!! Mr Chris has one of those too, need to check into one myself!! Thank you very much ma'am for bringing us along to show the way it works!! 😁😁👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
It's the best thing I could ever do for that little Ford 2000. That nitrogen was eating its back end off. Not one piece reaches the tractor now.
@@TheJfitch Amazing!! 😁😁👍👍
Guess those pendulum spreaders are getting more popular
I wish I would have known about it sooner. I have never seen one operate until this one. It is a great tool. 👍
