Distance Handling 101 – Foundation Skills: Episode 18 - Progressing your Wait
In this episode I am looking at how to take our basic wait behaviour and transfer it into a wait in front of an obstacle.
This can be a surprisingly tricky exercise, with some dogs finding it extremely hard to hold a stationary position once an obstacle is involved. However, this is a very important skill for any agility dog and will give you a major advantage as a distance handler if you can leave your dog in a wait.
Too many agility handlers neglect their wait cue until the dog is heavily fixated on doing obstacles and then they find it a struggle to go back and perfect a wait. Been there, done that! My first agility dog did not have a wait, if I could move to the side of the jump before ...

Просмотров 1106 месяцев назад
Valley Farm - 30 December 2023 Magpie A brand new venue for Magpie and this caused some of her anxiety to return. She was not as driven as she can be and less confident. However, we had several successful moments including a stunning dogwalk contact into a distant tunnel - just happened she was not meant to do the tunnel! The seesaw remains our nemesis, but we will take our time and Magpie will...
Everyday K9s Podcast Episode 1 - Can a new drug lengthen our dogs' lifespan?
Просмотров 527 месяцев назад
In this episode we discuss the news that San-Francisco based biotech company Loyal has announced it is on its way to developing an anti-ageing drug for dogs that could extend their lifespan. We discuss the ethical issues surrounding the claims, whether it will be a benefit to all dogs or a luxury item for the few, and ask ourselves whether we would take a chance on such a drug. If you enjoyed t...
Distance Handling 101 - Foundation Skills: Episode 17 - Jump Value 4: Adding the Jump Cue
Просмотров 1437 месяцев назад
In this episode: We are introducing a cue for the jump. This is more important than many people think, especially with agility courses becoming more complex in design and asking for greater discrimination powers from our dogs. Our dogs need to know when it is time to take a jump, and only a jump. So we are going to give them a specific cue for this action which means - take the jump immediately...

The latest rule changes have been issued by the Kennel Club agility shows (November 2023). In this video I reflect on the 4 main changes I think it is important you know about, how they might affect you and my thoughts on them. These 4 are Judging of the up contact on dogwalk and A-frame Changes to how judges enter their own dogs for competition All height dogs will need to be measured The requ...
Distance Handling 101 - Foundation Skills: Episode 16 - Jump Value 3: Adding in a Jump Pole
Просмотров 1347 месяцев назад
In this episode: We are now at the third layer of teaching great jump commitment to our dog. At this stage, your dog should happily run through the wings without prompting, they will hopefully seek them out as a way to earn an easy reward. That is awesome! Now we need to add in a jump pole to actual make this a 'jump'. *IMPORTANT* Only add in the jump pole once your dog is old enough and progre...
Distance Handling 101 - Foundation Skills: Episode 15 - Jump Value 2: Adding Distance
Просмотров 1917 месяцев назад
In this episode: I am progressing our dogs' understanding of jump value. I now what to challenge that understanding and fine out if they really know to run through the wings to earn the reward. To do this I will be adding distance to the exercise in a gradual process. There is still no actual 'jumping' involved. Between the wings is a puppy bump, but no pole. This makes this exercise suitable f...

22 October 2023 C1-4 Jumping (Clear) 40.226 Another fab clear on a similar course to the 1-7. Swift hesitated at the same point, the driving past me which is something we are working on, but overall she looked good with her independent push rounds, rear cross and smooth entry into the tunnel. This was the last run of the day and consequently I was not feeling my best and was a touch light-heade...

22 October 2023 C1-3 Jumping (5f) 39.306 Swift was driving on better than I expected, just a hesitation on the push round at the top of the course. I fortunately I was further behind than I had intended for the tunnel so Swift pull to me out of the tunnel and came past the face of the next jump earning a refusal (5R). However, she listened lovely for the discrimination to get to the weaves and ...

22 October 2023 C1-7 Jumping (Clear) 40.456 Swift put in a nice run on this speedy course. I trusted her on the natural push round after the top tunnel and we just lost connection on the long straight down the middle. I didn't trust my rear cross at the jump after the middle loop and so flicked her to my right side which cost us time, but she performed the rear cross on the jump before the tunn...

22 October 2023 C1-3 Agility (10F) This was our re-run of the course, as the first time we were stopped due to the jumps being the wrong height. The first time we ran Swift nailed the dogwalk contact, the second time she jumped off the side missing the contact (5f), however I got her to drive out better and complete the seesaw independently. We picked up another (5R) on the second to last jump ...
Training Diaries - Swift practices rear crosses

October 2023 At the beginning of the month we competed over a course which incorporated several rear crosses and Swift struggled with the turns away from me. I went back to working on our foundation skills and then set up the majority of the course to test our skills. This is version one of handling this course where I deliberately put myself in a position to need to do a rear cross in the weav...

Distance Handling 101 - Foundation Skills: Episode 14 - Creating Value for Jumps 1
Просмотров 2468 месяцев назад
In this episode: I explain the the importance of a dog having value for jumps. Of all the agility obstacles a dog will negotiate during its career, by far and away, the majority of them will be jumps. Yet, basic jump commitment is a neglected element in many training plans. Great attention is placed on complex obstacle behaviours such as running contacts and difficult weave entries, while often...
Distance Handling 101 - Foundation Skills: Episode 13 - Mastering the Timing for your Verbal Cues
Просмотров 2378 месяцев назад
In this episode: I take a deep dive into the importance of timing your verbal cues to enable you to successfully navigate your dog around a course. Late verbal cues are a primary cause for dogs taking the wrong course, knocking poles or becoming frustrated with the handler. Even handlers who can run with their dogs need to time their cues correctly to avoid mistakes occurring. When cues are giv...

Please could you do a video on way to help dogs that constantly drop poles?
Thank you for the Video. We Are Doing 3 weeks ground work Now and i Understand More and more 😊
really nicely explained 😃
Well explained. What would have been nice is to see this demonstrated in a sequence with more speed
Confusing
Brittany?
Thank you so much! Love these videos :)
Very Helpful! I have been trying to learn what threadles are and have seen all 3 versions making it very confusing on which to do and when. This video clarified all that. Thank you so much!
Why it T&T off to left rather than straight ahead?
Thanks great video.
Just wanted to say that these videos are fantastic! Watched the series and its great to see some drills that are really garden friendly that help embed the fundamentals hoopers concepts for dogs. Thanks!
Thank you, I am glad these have been useful for you
Hi there, I love your videos, thank you so much for sharing them. I wonder, have you done a video on how transition from shaping a wrap to giving distance commands for clockwise and anti-clockwise and crossing between you and the barrel? Thanks nicole
Hiya, I haven't done a video on that, but I will add it to my list of video topics. I assume by crossing between you mean when the dog is not to go to the far side of the barrel, but come on the inside?
This was really helpfull thank you!! <3
Glad it helped
In this video then, you are clicking for the foot behavior on the plank not foot placement on the mat. Is that correct?
Hi, I am looking for both, so I want her to run through the contact and across the mat to earn the reward. If she misses the contact but gets the mat then no reward. Equally if she hit the contact but leapt over the mat I would not reward because it is not a true run through and could lead to higher leaping. So the behaviour I mark initially is ‘at least one foot on contact area followed by running over the mat’ - not bouncing on and off the mat, that’s important. As she gets more confident then I tighten my criteria to at least two feet on contact, with split back feet, followed by running over the mat. Hope that makes sense?

Marmite? 🤔 Is it weird I have zero idea what that is? Uh oh. I'll have to consult Google about this here in a sec lol But, brain farts aside, this seems like a great recipe! Thanks
Depending where you are in the world, I think Marmite is something you either know about or don't! It is a yeast extract and, quite frankly, I think it tastes horrible but the dogs - and many people - love it!
Love these mats they are the best. Save you a whole lot of money on training treats. I'm speaking from experience.😊❤❤
They certainly do and you know exactly what is going into your treats.
I love your videos!!
thank you x
Thanks for your easy and exhaustive explanation. ❤
Glad it helped <3
Thank you. That was clearly explained & shown. I find all your videos very helpful indeed. Huge thanks for them all.
Thank you, great to hear they are helpful
As a newbie to agility, I really love these videos and very easy to understand. Thanks!
Great to hear! Thank you x
Hello, very helpfull. I will praktise that. In the Video bevor you said „Ready…“ to your dogs and they get hyped and fast. How can i Build this please? Regards
Thank you for your reply. I never actually teach the cue, but whenever I am prepping them for an exercise I tend to say 'ready, ready' and they eventually link this to the fact they are about to work. For instance, if I am working on getting them to run out to a toy, I might hold their harness or collar to lightly restrain them, say 'ready' and wait until I feel a little tension as they pull against them and then release them. They learn to associate 'ready' with action that way
Another good video, I agree with all the points you make.
Thank you!
Thank you for that , really well explained.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
😂😂😂 oh my!!
Still can’t believe he managed it 😆
thank you, we have just started competing and my dog will not run on infant of me, this is going to be very helpful 🙂
Glad to hear it is helpful to you 😁
Thank you sooooo much. I have only been taught to rely a target, and my dog simply doesn't understand what I am asking the second I take it away, or even when there is no food on it. This video helped me understand what's going on :)
Glad to hear it has helped you 😊
Super helpful, thank you
You're welcome!
Soooooo helpful! Thank you! This is exactly what I need- a clear, steady walk through, broken down and with reasons for why you'd use it. Love it. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it 😊

We have a good wait but I was sloppy in Ollie’s set up position. Then I saw you use a middle for set up and found that very helpful.
Yes, teaching the dog to do middle can certainly help. Glad you found this helpful
Thank you, love this! ❤
Glad you found it useful!
Thanks so much. Love your videos so helpful! ❤
Thank you!
Epic was the first puppy I had off lead as a baby. He has the best recalls of all of them. He learned from the start to come back and that it led to more fun. When he was attacked, I was very thankful I had a solid recall, because his first thought was to return to me. So important. ❤
Absolutely, getting that bond and recall right from the start is so vital
People probably more worried about bigger dogs than them running off
I get people with all sorts of dogs, big and small, say it to me.
TYSM! Just what I need 😃🐾
So glad!
You can cut the mat. FYI
Yes, you can, but mine ocd won’t let me snip into it 😆
Love this video, thank you, the point you made about the mechanics of the move is spot on, we can’t all do it a certain way, it’s great that you show us different options for the same move, Thank you!
I am glad you enjoyed this! I try my hardest to make things as accessible for every ability of handler
Thank You for sharing. I really appreciate your positive attitude.
Thank you
Looks great! Thank you
Hope you enjoy making them 😊
I have never seen a mat placed there except for two on two off or four on the floor (Rachel Sanders). Running contact videos like Trkman and Biggs place it on the lower half of the yellow contact. Placing it on the ground might result in teaching the dog he can jump the lower half of the ramp and hit mat ok.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, traditionally the mat is on the contact area, this did not work for Magpie or my other spaniel Sparrow. They would either leap over or plant their feet and leap off. Putting the mat after the contact helps Magpie to drop her head. Because she has to run across the mat she runs down and through. All dogs are different, of course.
What an interesting idea!
Just what I was looking for. Thank you! Making them right now 😁
Fab 😀
Thank You Sophie:) Wishing you and your family the very best! You provide the best instructional videos ,we really appreciated it! Thank You! Thank You!
Thank you for this feedback, it means a lot. Glad you are finding my videos useful!
That’s really helpful thank you 😊
Do UK associations still have faults for missing the up contract on DW and A-frame? USA did away with that ages ago
Yes, at KC shows the up contacts can still be faulted, though some judges are better at marking them than others. At special events, such as Champ finals, there can be two judges present, one to mark the up and one to mark the down
So i went to try this one because i was sure my dogs could do it, since i was able to send them form various angles!... To my big surprise i realized that all my backside training was with my dogs on the outside of me! It was a really eye opener and did end my reps with a few beautiful sends from my inside and from my outside, and could do the 3/4 of the first jump aligned with the backside jump! Thanks for this videos! it helping me a lot!!!!
it is really interesting to test a skill and see if it is as independent as we imagine. As you say, it can be a real eye opener. Well done for working on it and glad you enjoyed the videos 🙂
Creep down to just before the contact, btw, and then jump. Lol
Those were the sort of running contacts my first agility dog had!
Thank you so much. We are new to agility and have so much to learn. Yesterday my dog was jumping everything every which way she thought was right not watching me, when she didn't get a treat, she would speed through again. She was trying so hard and I obviously need to give me guidance. This is not a easy sport, we really appreciate your videos.
Thank you June. There is definitely lots to learn and it can be daunting for new handlers, but take it step by step and you will get there. Have you seen my Beginner Agility Training playlist and also my A-Z of Agility, as they may help you too.
I've been using two cues - Away for going from the right and Come By for left, As much as it tickles me to use sheepdog cues with a papillon, I think I might have to adopt your idea of not worrying about direction and just using "round the back and turn tight" and "round the back and jump long/slice" cues. He knows what side I want him to go anyway from my body cue, and I do occasionally forget the directional verbal and give the wrong one - he usually get it right anyway from context because of where I'm facing and what side he's on.
This is one area I have never had directional cues (and I have a lot of verbal cues, lol!) and it has never been an issue even though I have to do a lot more distance handling these days. I also think that even if they took the wrong wing, as long as they completed the backside you can save it by what you cue next. Glad this has helped
