Memories of Billingford Windmill - shared by Ivan Daines.
Ivan Daines was born in Billingford, near Diss in Norfolk, in 1924. This was the same year that his grandfather, George Daines, bought Billingford Windmill.
Billingford Windmill became the last working windmill in Norfolk, thanks largely to the determination of Ivan's father, Arthur. Ivan ran the mill himself for a time when both his father and grandfather were ill.
We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to interview Ivan about his family's involvement with the mill. We owe special thanks to Jenny Bowles who helped arrange the interview, which took place on 8 November 2024.

As part of the Mill and the Marsh Folk project to restore Stracey Arms Drainage Mill in Norfolk, a new suite of interpretation has been installed. Four hanging panels on the ground floor provide information about the mill, the people associated with the mill and the role of the mill as a pillbox during WWII. Eight segments mounted in the crownwheel create a chronological history of the mill. Th...

Gunton Park Sawmill
Просмотров 229Год назад
Gunton Park Sawmill was built in the early 1820s for Edward Harbord, the 3rd Lord Suffield. He acquired the Gunton Park estate after the death of his brother, William Harbord, in 1821. The mill was powered by water from an artificial lake called Sawmill Pond. Initially the mill was constructed to provide timber for use on the estate. The sawmill is powered by two breastshot waterwheels (where w...

In August 1993, Ian Russell built a model of Stracey Arms Drainage Mill to remind him of his holidays in Norfolk. The model - standing 1.1 metres to the top of its cap and with a sail span of 1.4 metres - has been a feature in the garden of his Wakefield home ever since. In August 2022 he offered it to Stracey Arms Mill Shop and Tearooms so that it could be enjoyed by visitors to the site. We w...

Wicklewood Windmill: Re-installing the sail frames (2012).
My word , so many familiar places, what memories this film has brought back. Thanks
What a GEM. Thanks to the NWT
A different world. No Hi Viz,Hard Hats
No mobiles .BLISS
This film is of our England 🏴 how it were when it was good. I was born in the north east in 73 but when it finally becomes my time to leave this place please go stick me in front of an iPad or whatever and play this type of film it’s beautiful
This film is a gem. I'm looking forward to watching the others on the channel.
I was born too late.
I miss my youth so much
1975, a year before the drought. Had one of those saws, still got two of the big Tirfors. A decade before that I was on a coastal tanker and Great Yarmouth was a regular port of call. In the 50's, learnt to sail with the school at Barton Turf. Sure are some memories there - thanks for sharing
I aint gonna hurt ya ! POP
Pmsl NOT GOING TO HURT YOU THEN BLOWES IT AWAY
Been sailing there since I was a teen , a special place and I’m in my seventies now , brought back so many memories
Forgotten way of life in less than 50 years...
3:25 Navvy driver is a right spladoosher !
What a beautiful film, thank you
I live a few miles from where the river test rises, known as one of the Best trout streams in England.
So interesting. We are now so far removed from life back then that it's more important than ever to memoir.
Come on, whoever edited this, you added the grain and marks at editing stage didn't you? It's from 1975, not 1875!
You are crediting us with editing skills we do not have! This recording was taken from a VHS copy.
Films like this should be shown in norfolk schools and collages..its our history and should never be forgotten..
ALONG WITH SPELLING
Should be shown Nationwide ,, ,
I went with school to saxtead mill in the early 70s
A fascinating record, I remember visiting it in 1957, as well as Syleham and Pakenham, when I was 14 .
Poverty and grim
I was 10 in 75 and live in Australia, just like England some things are improving like pollution, but everything else is turning into the playground for the rich. It was a beautiful place in this film
Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you. BANG
This film was made by Anglia TV and shown in the About Britain series. Credits missing here but it was narrated by Peter Tuddenham.
That’s a dusty film reel
Bootifull!
Who would have thought that the 70,s would look like ancient history.
I went here on a school visit in about 1977. Great views
Having grown up in a mill I love to see them working still, just beautiful engineering
That you can only get to Burney arms mill by boat is an oft repeated myth ! In the 70s and 80s we would often drive over to the mill for a beer and some lighthearted amusement watching the hire craft arrive on a Saturday evening. The track starts at Wickhampton church, crossing the railway line just west of Burney Arms station and then on to the mill. One night the autumnal mists came down and we had a bit of a problem until we realised that not one but 2 new gates had been fitted on the same field !
That might have been possible in the 70s or 80s, we don't know, but the route you describe certainly wouldn't work now. The track from Wickhampton ends at the Weaver's Way long distance path. This does go south-east to Berney Arms Mill but the route can be difficult to walk at certain times of the year, let alone navigate with a vehicle. Other tracks that lead to Berney Arms are not public roads, so using them would be trespassing. And sadly, the Berney Arms Inn has been closed for a while now in any case.
I love windmills ♥ Specially american style aermotor!!! Windmills are amazing giants, I wish they could talk 💨 🔩
I have loved windmills since I was a child, especially the AERMOTOR American styles. I always dreamed of having one. When I started working, I saved up little by little to buy one and finally I bought it, my dream came true. I love my Aermotor #8 windmill. Thanks for the video ♥ 🙏🏼 Windmills are wonderfull and strong giants 💪
What a fabulous film! The way of life has changed due to modern technology of course, otherwise, this lovely corner of England is just the same. It is as beautiful as it ever was :)
Belo history ...
Many of the Dutch windmills that used to drain the land can still be made workable in no time. With changing climate they can be used to assist when modern ways are not enough
Its in a right state now!!
Right mess or right good?
@KingfishStevens-di9ji Bad I'm afraid! Actually very bad!!
@ it takes money and the pink hairs would rather spend it on the invaders
This mill is now in a right state! June 2024 was down there at the weekend. It will soon be lost unfortunately.
What?????? What hapened with it? Explain please
@@Aermotor-windmill-lover Basically no one is looking after it! It's rotten in many places and no one is doing any maintenance on the site. The old Ruston pump is failing into the drain and the whole site is very sad looking. It's also becoming very dangerous for the public to walk around the site. I suspect it will all get pulled down now shortly!!
We have to save it!
It was part the way through restoration but the 'owner' has run out of money. Such a s shame not to complete saving the history of Herringfleet and Somerleyton, and should be made a priority.
@@kaybrunt3677 who owns the site?
What, no pinkfeet or wigeon???
I was 7 in 75, living in a coastal city in SW England . Never realised how much the country would change for the worse in.the next 50 years. But thinking about it,.we shouldn't be that surprised, just look how things changed from1925 to 1975.
That kid’s Norfolk accent when asking about the “boots” on the river near Norwich is a hidden gem.
Rich Tory farmers that out profit over the environment. They were complaining about the EEC when they were getting subsidies and now they complain they can’t sell abroad because of Brexit, when most of them voted to leave because they thought it would be more profitable. Now they know they were lied to.
Now 2024 and there are still plenty of birds/wildlife on Halvergate
Well, we’ve become a bit more sensible about conservation 40 years later.
That was a sweet video❤
The windmill lazily turning on the hilltop, down below in the valley the wheel at the watermill revolves as the thundering current pours down the sluice and cascades over the top, the bells ring out from the village church and a farmer in the hay meadow stops his horses long enough in the shade to wipe his brow and smoke his pipe....
Prophetic words at 15.25 to 30. Another world lovely thanks
Windmills are fantastic examp[es of timber engineering, and stand as testament to the craftsman that built them.
Lovely bit of nostalgia, thanks.
look what they took from us...
This has been absolutely fascinating and I think I’m going to watch again and take some notes on how he filled his book, what he questioned, how he responded to his own questions, and that he used “newspaper clippings.” Thank you so much for sharing this to us. I feel blessed now!
