Nikon 40mm F/2.8 - Best DX lens

Which lens would you choose if you could only take one lens with your Nikon DX camera? To me it would be clear that it is the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G. Thank you for this review. My camera is backordered, and I'm trying to learn more about it as I wait. I've got the z50 Mk 1, and I ordered the Mk 2 as soon as I read that it has the z8/9 autofocus and Expeed processor. I can't wait for mine to show up. One question: is it possible to lock the focus point on the Mk 2? My focus point wanders as I use my camera because I can't lock the rocker switch.

      @WimBals День назад

      Thanks, the Z50ii is more than an upgrade from the mark 1. As I mentioned in the video, it's more like a Z60. I'm not sure I understand your question. You can 'lock' your focus point by selecting single point AF. With the d-pad (round button) you choose the location of the AF point by going up or down, or left and right. In this mode the autofocus does not jump around. I hope this helped you a bit.

    D7500 is the fun camera. I have other cameras as well, but so far did not came across a DSLR so balanced. So ... working. I just take my photos. 1/8000 shutter speed, all Nikon CLS features when I attach the SB-700, there is even a flash build-in. 4K video (though with crop), group-area AF with face detection in viewfinder mode, a sensor making you question if you really need full-frame. Reliable and consistent exposure. The D7500 just does its job.

    Very good video and revue! You forgot to mention two important things for me: the low battery capacity, I have the Z50 and use 3 batteries for my nature photography, and the additional U3 switch position to store user settings. This comes very handy for me shooting stills and videos. I plan to upgrade to the Z50 II for the better autofocus.

    • @WimBals
      @WimBals 6 дней назад

      Thanks for your reply. At 05:32 I mention the extra function key (U1, U2, U3). While the original Z50 had respectable battery life, the new Z50ii is no improvement in this area. This should be taken with a grain of salt. I can easily shoot over 800 images on a full charge. Perhaps the use of airplane mode and the fact that I never leave the camera on unnecessarily has something to do with it.

    I got the Z50 II and really like it. The menu system and button layout are very user friendly and the low light performance is outstanding. I was worried it might suffer without IBIS but I think it performs better than my E-M1 due to the sensor and much more powerful processor. This is in low light indoor shooting with the 16-50 kit lense. I still do hope Nikon comes out with some brighter DX VR lenses.

    It’s a shame it’s got so heavy. I have the z30… and while this would be a great upgrade, I don’t like the idea of carrying 150g more. I’d live for Nikon to bring out an 18mm prime to match the 24mm DX.

The one I was eyeing was the D500 which was a professional grade APSC sensor camera but unfortunately it was discontinued. I was torn between the z50 and the d7500 but honestly i love the look and feel of the f mount lenses (currently have a d3400) We as humans are always looking at uogrades, new tech, fresh outlooks. Yet i realised im such an amateur that people shooting on a 5mp fujifilm finepix bridge camera were taking better photos than i can on my d3400. I think as many have stated it comes down to the user to what the camera can ultimately capture for the most part, just like having a sports car doesnt mean you can drive fast safely. The f body cameras just have that style i really like, and i think i want a camera for longevity as i learn more of the ropes arpund photography. Since i have f body lenses already, an f body camera makes sense to me. Despite the world moving to mirrorless ill still be able to pick up f body lenses for years to come. So i think ultimately ill go with the d7500. If perchance i decide to pursue photography as a profession than ultimately ill invest in some fairly expensive camera tech, but for now i think for the money the d7500 gives ALOT of camera.

    Right now there are some good sales for new D7500 camera bodies, and this camera can be paired with Tamron 100-400mm F mount lens (around $799 USD new), which gives it a 150-600mm reach for wildlife with this apsc body. I am considering it for such, as the latest Z30, Z50ii cameras are just so small to work with, I prefer the larger DSLR bodies for photos. Of course this camera is great for portraits and travel with DX lens like the 16-65mm lens (which I have) or 18-140mm lens. Upgrading from a D300s probably soon. Still lots of used or some new bodies still out there. Thanks for your great video to show the camera features.

      Thanks for your comment. The d7500 works great with my Sigma 100-400mm and Nikon 70-300mm. The colors however are more accurate on the Z50 and z30.

    I had this lens before I went mirrorless. It was my favorite lens. I was just looking through old photos I took with and I forgot how much I loved it.

      I totally understand you. None of the current z mount lenses have that same effect.

    I have just bought this lens and after seeing your video I am very keen to use it. For travelling and not wanting to heavy camera bags this should do all I need it to do. I will use it on my F6 and my D700. Thanks for your review

    Thanks for highlighting this lens in your vid. I just received my own copy of the D version today. The bokeh of this lens reminded me of my Nikkor 200mm/2VR, smooth as butter, nothing like the newer Z lenses.

    I am using one and have another almost new stored in the box. Ok afterwards I went to fullframe but I will never ditch the D500. The only downside is that there are not many apsc lenses that can deliver. Especially apsc wide angle zooms are just horrible. Maybe sharp in the center but very bad at the edges. And AF consistency is also a problem with those lenses. I use my D500 mostly with fullframe lenses. The only apsc lenses I think are worthy enough are the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8, Nikon 35mm f1.8 dx, Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 and the Samyang 16mm f2.0.

    A nice review thanks. Yes It's a lovely lens that gets the balance between sharpness and gentle render about right. It's great stopped down for landscapes, I shoot detail in the landscape with 200, 300 and even 400mm sometimes.

    Hi so to summarize this lens, you can control the zoom in and out. You can control focus. It is suitable to take from landscape to portrait to close up?
