J.M. Sperger : Concerto Nr. 4, 1st Mvt. (World Premiere) - THE SPERGER PROJECT
At last, after lying dormant for almost 250 years, this wonderful concerto has come to life again. For the first time since Sperger himself composed and played it, we can hear it performed on the type of bass for which it was originally composed.
We recorded the other two movements recently, they can be found elsewhere on RUclips (Viennese Tuning Channel).
All of these recordings are preparatory work for the "SPERGER PROJECT" : an ambitious plan to present all 18 of Sperger's bass concertos. A bunch of very nice people and great musicians will bring you these unknown treasures of the bass repertoire : Michał Bylina, Frank Wittich, Darija Andzakovic, Benedict Ziervogel, Isaline Leloup, Jose-...

J.M. Sperger Concerto 4 , Finale. World Premiere, Lockdown Version. THE SPERGER PROJECT.
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.4 года назад
What do musicians do on a cold, rainy semi lockdown day? Play some music and have some fun, of course. So we took Sperger's 4th Bass Concerto and gave it a special treatment on the Viennese Violone and the Viola d'Amore. This concerto is very special. It's for the Viennese bass, but in F Major. A third higher than the standard D- tuning. Since we play at 415 Hz, it actually sounds in E to our m...
The Sperger Project. Introduction: Concerto 4, Adagio Cantabile

For the last ten years i've been dreaming of exploring and presenting all 18 bass concertos by the unsurpassed Master of the instrument, Johann Matthias Sperger. Unfortunately only a few of these exquisite works are played today: those that can be more or less faithfully reproduced on the modern double bass in fourths. That's a pity, because they are wonderful pieces. Now, together with a few f...

Here is a little peek behind the scenes. Rehearsing Mozart's "Nozze di Figaro" Overture in an arrangement for two, at the Brussels Opera's "Grand Foyer". Image and sound quality are less than optimal, but it gives an idea of what we've been up to, these days. The Viennese Violone (gut strings, of course in Viennese Tuning) is by Domonkos Gellert, the Viola d’Amore is by Pierre Vanengeland. Enjo...

Korneel Le Compte : Charton B21 Haruko Tanabe: Viola d'Amore by Pierre Van Engeland Here is our version of Bach's famous "Ciaccona". We recorded it, in one take, at Art Galerie Laurentin in Brussels, right in the city centre (at the very end of the recording you can hear birds singing, and a car passing just outside the window). Playing in a galery, surrounded by works of art, is always an imme...

The double bass concerto by Johann Baptist Vanhal is one of the staples of our repertoire, both for modern players and for the “ancient music”-oriented musicians. Although it’s playable on a modern bass (with some minor adaptations left and right), it only shows its true colors when played in the original tuning on a bass with gut strings and frets, just like it was intended. The manuscript is ...

Great interpretation, indeed! I wish you had elaborated a bit on the Viennese tuning...
Magnifique. I can see a Patrick Charton suitbass behind you. ❤
Merci beaucoup. Oui, Patrick était un grand ami et on pense souvent à lui. Je joue encore chaque jour sur ma B21 (accord Viennois, boyau) et j'ai le sentiment qu'il est là et qu'il m'inspire...
@@viennesetuningchannel6101 You can see my Charton basses on this channel :-)

absolutely wonderful ❤thank you
Thank you very much!
Why the Maestro Le Kompte not make videos now ?
Hello! Thanks for your question. It's been a while, mainly due to health issues. But new recordings are coming soon. Probably next November. Will be a surprise... All the best!
Genial! Brody Delestre(Brasil Rio de Janeirto)
Thank you so much. More things coming soon. All the best, enjoy life!
My back hurts!!
Mine doesn't 🙂
Super!!! ❤ From János
Köszönöm a kedves szavakat! Hála neked, rengeteget tanultam.

Amazing!
Prachtig❤!!
Thanks Maarten! All the best!
Now this was very enjoyable to listen to. Bravi
Thank you so much. All the best!
Absolutely magnificent!
Thank you so much!
When i was pursuing music i played this with an orchestra i was principal bass. I think i made the correct choice to stop taking it serious and do a different carreer. This is not good. The bass playing is dorky and gut strings sound bad on bass. No objective rating system. Good riddance
Good luck with your different career. Enjoy life and be happy :-)
Outstanding sound, I love it!
Total success with recording strategy and tactics! And performance... Oh, performance ! Is there more ?
Gotta love the one-person orquestra
You two are amazing! I love it!! I play viola and gambas, and am currently deciding if I will buy a g-violone or a small bass.
❤ Thank you so much! I love the bass in all its shapes and forms, but the g-violone is a truly heavenly instrument and i always regret not being better at it... tough choice, i guess. Whichever it is, enjoy playing and enjoy life every day!
@@harukokorneel6585 I bought a g-violone and am really enjoying it. I have already played with our gamba group - those low notes add so much to a consort. I may also buy a small UB in the future - I need the shorter string length. Keep recording please!
A hippy contribution. Austrians are odd folk anyway!
🙃
Bravo
I like it
Fantástico 👏👏👏👏 💪💪💪❤️
Beautiful!
Thank you very much!
Wooow 👏👏👏👏
Love the sound but the quasi naive, modernistic art really doesn` t go in pair to reflect this beautiful, so-fine and complex piece of Bach. They somewhat are complete opposites. I think the galery is more like Stockhausen if it was to be translated to a soundscape. Thank you for the recording, amazing instruments!
I agree with you, I don't like the weird modern environment. I think it's ugly, especially that distracting tall sculpture between the musicians. It doesn't compliment the beautiful Baroque music.
".....and it's almost inevitable that you will touch more than one string, even if you try, otherwise you have to play so carefully that there's no musical content left. So if you dig, in if you really play, you're going to touch more than one string and usually in the solo pieces that's intended or at least it's allowed. In Ensemble music it can be a problem that you have notes that don't fit in the chord, but these (solo) pieces are so well written that Who cares?" Bravo! Well said, Korneel! 😊
Hello Bret, nice to hear from you! I enjoyed your TED-talk very much. Thanks for watching and commenting. Enjoy music, enjoy life. All the best!
Thank you again.
Thank you Sperger!
The most enlightening performance I did was a Bach B minor mass, me on my bass and a violone player. We both observed how some passages fit one instrument better than the other, be it sound or comfort to execute the passage and we decided accordingly what to play or not depending on what we thought suited the instruments, the soloists and the music ...I have no doubt that these instruments played concerts together as life is not so clear cut. Thank you so much for these videos and sharing your knowledge.
Omg noble and vile for up and down...almost like good and evil with right hand vs left hand through history!
I never liked my vibrato until I started using gut strings. The sound and vibrato in my head is gut.
430 feels like I am playing in the cracks....thank you for all the amazing information. 😀
You made me laugh...as you started talking about vibrato on everything I thought about the phrase about putting ketchup on everything and then you said it! 😀
Thank you for these wonderful videos!
Short n sweet calendar, yes! I wrote mine for Dittersdorf...so much happier. Your videos are so amazing and helpful!
Thank you for all the nice comments! Glad the videos are of some use to you. Keep playing and enjoy life! All the best.
I love what you said! It is a bass ... if I wanted to sound like a cello I would have switched to cello when I had the chance at 12 years old 😀
Totally agree about 8va!
Great advice about listening to other music by the composer and written during the period.
Love the uniform tempo around 66 pulse for all movement!
Thank you!
I am listening but then notice the bass on the far right....is that an ebony bridge?! :)
The bridge is in maple but it's been dyed black. Some gambas have this kind of painted bridge so i asked my luthier to do the same with the bass. Looks cool :-)
Thank you!!
Thank you so beautiful
Hi . How's the project going ?😀
Hi, thanks for asking! The Sperger Project is alive and kicking. Benedict Zierbogel and Isaline Leloup have already made a contribution by recording concertos 9 and 18, in the meantime our Duo has studied concertos 1 till 6, with number 5 slated for recording very soon. A number of little try-out concerts is planned for early 2022. Next year will hopefully see quite some activity, after all the covid-setbacks. Fingers crossed (or un-crossed. Even in Viennese Tuning it's hard to play with crossed fingers). All the best!
Thanks for sharing your passion for the early music and "Jethro Tull" (on the T-shirt)!
Ha! Thank you so much! Yes, i absolutely love Jethro Tull. In fact most of what i know about playing music, i learned from my early years in pop and rock bands... all the best to you, may the passion be with you always. Never too old to rock'n'roll :-)
Very nice!! The bit of Beethoven 1 at the end was especially charming. I definitely couldn't help smiling listening to this.
Thank you! We had lots of fun rediscovering this gem, and recording it. We’ll play all 18 Sperger Concertos in the coming three years. So far we’ve covered the first six. True masterpieces, every one of them. All the best!
beautiful bow!! who made it?!
Great interpretation!
Thank you so much! All the best.
What an amazing looking bass. This is one of my favourite version of this piece! Also its fun to see so many pieces mashed up in one performance. Thanks for the treat!
Not gonna lie, you caught me off guard with the Per questa bella mano :) . Beautiful
Awfully kind of you... thanks a lot! In "Ancient Music" there is often a lot of musical humor. We don't always "get it", maybe because sometimes we take Classical Music too seriously. But composers and musicians liked this kind of thing, like quoting a few bars of another piece. All the best!
Prachtig!
