What about a seat pad? That is one of the items on a turkey vest that I use every time I go out turkey hunting. I'm looking to switch to a backpack and will probably just attach a seat pad to the pack with some carabineers. Call access is also a bit more convenient with a vest but even then I often just put my pot call in my pocket and diaphragm call in my mouth. Like you, I prefer the backpack for carrying all the gear I use; it just works better than the vest in that regard. Finally, I just end up taking my vest off and detaching my seat pad when I sit down anyway 😁.

In the situation you were in, I wouldn’t have called to them at all until they flew down. But in other situations, I have had no problem calling to a turkey on the roost, not when it is pitch black. Then again, I can think of a couple of times when one was gobbling very early that made a soft yelp, which brought him down too early, and I missed him.
