Learn this and change your life - Alan Watts
Speech extract from "What is Reality" by Alan Watts, courtesy of alanwatts.org.
#AlanWatts #Philosophy #Consciousness #Existence #UniverseAndSelf
This lecture challenges conventional beliefs about existence, consciousness, and our relationship with the world around us. Watts discusses:
- The misconception of being separate from the universe
- How language shapes our perception of reality
- The illusion of 'things' in a continuously changing world
- Rethinking our understanding of self and identity
- The impact of societal myths on our worldview
- Questioning the 'fully automatic' model of the universe

The thing about reading is the level of depth that can be achieved in a book format. And if you’re a voracious reader, you can read faster than you can listen to a podcast or consume an audiobook. It might be few intellects who engage with it as a preferred medium but I don’t think it’s ever going to die out.

I dont agree people dont read. We all read,.Just depends what. People that read heavy dense books ie classics had a lot more time with less distractions. Now life is very fast and competitive and Jp and host is right the opportunity cost of sinking hours into say far from the madding crowd or trollopes barchester towers is too high when you can speed read self help books or get the gist of ideas/philosophy from podcast and you tube clips.

Chaucer never wrote for a market, Homer never wrote for a market. There were no book sales markets. They created great stories that survived. We will look back on this era and see a hole. Because digital has no shelf life. Even the medium fails in the end. Things I made as a musician 20 year ago and committed to digital storage are now gone. All my new music gets transcribed to paper as well as recorded these days,.

Reading does take a while, especially when you're like me and you ENJOY reading slow. I may read 5 to 10 books a year. I watch WAY more videos than that, and I enjoy reading much more than watching videos.

I think the brilliance of reading is always reading slowly and reading something that you will remember, because I think what the hell is the point of reading 500 books if tomorrow you have already forgotten more than half of them.

@@Musashimiyyamoto Well said. I forget most of what I read and usually have to read something maybe 3 times before I remember it well. I was shocked when I re-read a biography of George Washington about 20 years later and saw how little I remembered.

@@Lhgtv2010ify Some books can be very expensive. Others are pretty cheap. If you get classic mass market paperbacks even new they might be 5 bucks or so. I ordered 5 books from Amazon and paid maybe 30 dollars total for the order. Kept me entertained for months. They did take about 12 days to arrive though. I'm not on prime so I did the super saver shipping which is slower.

Why don't you emphasize how magnificent we are to have survived. Our ancestors survived. If you have two arms and two legs and youe out ancestors were tormented and beaten, mistreated worse than animals and then disallowed the tools to compete when kicked off the plantation, we should be proud. I learned to join em. I live small and had to work as a menial although I went to university. Now I am working with my mind. No one knows my wealth

This was my initial thought. Making it as an author has always been hard. It sounds like perhaps now is harder. On the other hand, perhaps this is advantageous for whoever is left writing because there may be less competitors. - Unfortunately, hearing him say that as a successful author brings me down because I thought of writing for half my life, I’m starting late, and I’m not known in any other domain or platform.

One must remember that the story is non important but it’s about the journey on how the story comes about especially when it piques one’s interest and imagination as that is the essence that one must capture. Like an artist on a canvas, there has to be a start….. so off you go and make the start! 😊
