Java in the Raw
Индонезия
Добавлен 14 мар 2021
A sister channel to my original channel the Magic of Java originally designed for people who are more interested in the travel and ethnographic side of Java. Increasingly, however, the focus is shifting to folklore of my native Shropshire and it's neighboring counties. This reflected my inability to leave the island of Java during the health crisis, which has only partially been relaxed. Slowly I am able to reintroduce more content from my travels outside Java and in other parts of Indonesia, but will continue to research content from the UK.
Old Prints and Photos, Around the Quarry, Shrewsbury
Old photos and prints of Shrewsbury in the Quarry area. Beginning with the Port Hill Suspension Bridge then the Avenue in the Quarry taking us to the statue of Hercules. Then the Kingsland Bridge and looking towards Shrewsbury Schools and the boathouses.
We then move into the Dingle and the Shoemakers Arbor, before walking past the war memorial and St Chad's. Crossing Claremont Bank to go down Claremont Hill onto Bakers Street. We pause to marvel at Rowley's Mansion, then the Welsh Bridge and Frankwell.

The Vikings Unlikely Contribution to Shrewsbury
Просмотров 2919 часов назад
I frequently mentioned that the Vikings made few incursions into Shropshire, apart from maybe at Quatford. Quatford is equated with Cwatbrycge, where Vikings are known to have built a fortress and spent the winter of 895/6. There is no real proof that it was Quatford and it may have been much further south in Gloucestershire, despite a recent Viking artefact being found somewhere near Bridgnort...

Great video, and I totally agree; the Dingle is a special place. Looking forward to further videos.
Thank you Alex. Sorry about the sound editting I only spotted it after it was released.

Are these the accents Staffordshire ghosts would have?
Not quiet I am from neighbouring Shropshire, which has a little more Welsh in it.
@javaintheraw2705 I thought I heard something like that!
TOOK MUCH LSD AROUND ST MARY'S STRANGE PLACE !
Some cracking good yarns, or folk tales, there Magic. When I went to live in Colwyn Bay in 1986 I remember a story in the North Wales Weekly News that the local police had arrested a man from Anglesey (might have been the Red Wharf Bay area) for murder and he was believed to be an actual vampire !! That's amazing that you met Lemmy, I'm jealous !! Your pronunciation of Welsh names is a lot better than mine was.
Yes I thought this was a good vlog. Alas YouYube are currently promoting the channel in Indonesia, for whom even Wales has no meaning. And they have the audacity to call it Artificial INTELLIGENCE! I missed that story about the murderer or I would have included it in my look at Vampires. I knew that you would be jealous over me meeting Lemmy. I think the pub was the Cambridge. Someone from Shrewsbury introduced me as they were neighbours, I think in Sheppard's Bush, very Lemmy central but not at all trendy. Lemmy having grown up largely in Stoke seemed to like people from Shrewsbury. Before, I went to work in Saudi Arabia I needed to get my visa so was sent to work in the London office whilst I waited. I was put up in the Holiday Inn (I think) in Marble Arch and having a drink in the bar with my friend. In walked Ozzie Osbourne and his entourage of AR men, promoters, etc. He ordered a huge round of drinks we presumed for these hangers on, then said in the same glass and proceeded to drink the mixture himself. Ozzie had no time for these people and made beeline for us. He was hugely entertaining. My masters dissertation in Cardiff was on the Tonypandy Riots and involved looking at the union lodge minutes. So I started to learn Welsh and hence my south Wales pronunciation. But I'm useless at languages and I found that the miners were mostly English, so learning Welsh no longer necessary, especially in Cardiff in the 1980s.
@@javaintheraw2705 Lol! No, I imagine not. I'm glad to hear Ozzy was as entertaining offstage as he was on! It's great that he preferred your company to the A&R men, and hangers on. A night to remember !!! I did a course in Welsh History for a while, at evening classes at Llandrillo-Yn-Rhos College, near Rhos-on-Sea. It was great climbing up the stairs to the classroom and looking out of the big window out to sea. Very picturesque. We learned about the Rebecca riots at one stage, which I know you've covered, Magic. I still can't fathom why the blokes were in women's dresses though. Maybe it was just going that way !!
@@carolebarker2195 I know Coleg Llandrillo very well and yes a lovely location. British males need only a limited excuse to dress up and especially in drag. Across the UK drag was often associated with dissent.

Fascinating video, Magic, thank you.
Yes when you mentioned voodoo I knew that you'd like it.
If I can say so without being rude, there seems to be a disconnect between the seriousness of the presentation, and the images.
Probably a good point. I sometimes use somewhat flippant images/clips to make my content more accessible. But also I struggle to find copyright free clips in particular. Indeed, recently RUclips have been onto me for clips that were labelled as copyright free. This creates massive reworking of vlogs and inevitable loss of quality.
I'm Mike Fulford and have fond memories of Blackpool from many years ago, as you say, kiss me quick hats, candy floss, donkeys, Blackpool rock, old trams, the illuminations, the piers, the tower with the grand ballroom and organ, and the circus. Used to love the old school Pleasure Beach rides, my favourite amusement was enjoying hours at the Fun House in my stockingfeet before it was destroyed and only the laughing clown survived.
Mike very similar memories to my own. As a child and young adult I loved Blackpool.

Ooo, just starting to watch this. Super excited. X❤❤❤
Great, I've realised maybe you didn't spot my vlog on Wild Eadric.
@javaintheraw2705 do you have a link 🙏 please
Thanks. I'll look now. I have a very good friend who lives by stiperstones. The Devils Chair is a very interesting place.
@@SpiderBird1548 Yes my mum's family are from there.
@javaintheraw2705 I have been called to go and record all the old Shropshire folk tales before they're gone forever. Any contacts would be greatly appreciated.i went down Snailbeach Mine shafts 1 this year. I'm going to get to level 3 by next year. Then, finding out about the Italian prisoner war camp at the Bog during WW2 and the ammo that was stashed after the war. Know anything about that little gem?
Send me a coconut!! Nice video.. I always enjoy watching your videos and the beautiful scenery.. ❤
Thank you, I will.

You've got an amazing lot of knowledge about Bonfire night, Magic, thank you. The lard effigy of the pope with live cats inside his large belly sounds horrific! I hope the lard melted from the flames and the cats managed to escape !!
Maybe its living in Indonesia that brings back so many childhood memories. It doesn't mention the fate of the cats in my research, but the 'celebrations' tended to be somewhat violent.
@@javaintheraw2705 I can imagine. Yes, maybe it's the distance from them that conjures up the memories. Could be. Bonfire night could get a bit feral in the 60s and 70s. I remember kids making bonfires with doors and staircases they'd nabbed from empty houses !!
Hhhaappppyyy haaaalllloweeeen Halloween 🦇 🦇 🎉🎉
Happy Halloween Carole. Whilst I don't want to jump on the bandwagon of criticising the Amercianisation of the season, I doesn't feel the same does it Carole? I feel privileged to remember soul cakes and mischief nights and indeed harvest supper. Here in Java it goes without recognition, but when in Jakarta the American version is somewhat in evidence, mercifully without trick or treat.
Thanks for the stories! My dads family came from Stanton Lacy.. Family there since 15th century.
Valarie if my memories correct one of the few witches to be found guilty was from Stanton Lacy. I talk about it on my vlog on the Salem connection.
I attended Priory School and also knew Nobby Holland!! I was also born in 1958... I must know you... what is your name??
We were in the same class Dickie, I'm Pip. In fact, you worked with my Dad didn't you? Are you still in Shrewsbury? How are you?
Hiya Pip!! Well, well, well. Its been soooo long! I'm good thanks, yes, still in Shrewsbury... and still working! Hope you're doing ok? Did I work with your Dad? I'm not sure tbh... where did he work?
@@RichardDavies-d1y My dad was Eric Smith he got a job as the office boy at a printers on Station Street, where you worked on the signs. Alas he fell in the Pride Hill Centre 4 years ago and was put on the Liverpool Care Pathway. But they backed down when I called Whitchurch Cottage Hospital from Indonesia. He was released but fell again and didn't recover from the operation. This was filmed 2 years ago when the NHS decided it was my mother's time had come. As you will hear I live in Indonesia, where I am not allowed to work. I made my savings last until I got to pension age. But needless to say not a single pension provider was ready to start paying me (despite giving them 6 months warning). All is about to be resolved and I can at last enjoy my autumn years in the tropics.
@javaintheraw2705 Eric??... of course! I didn't know he was your Dad. I'm so sorry to hear your news, he was a lovely man. I loved your video, and good to hear someone else remembers 'Long John' from the Boathouse!!... he served me my first illegal pint too! Whitbread Tankard if I remember?... and all of 15 pence! I still see a couple of the old Soul boys occasionally. Chris (Flapper) Wakeman and Sal Crook mainly (both retired) also Nobby, of course who like me, still works. I used to see Zoonie Brown and Gareth Westcott around, but not for a while now. I catch up with Keith Underhill, the art teacher now and again, he's still in town and still as laid back! Anyway it's late and I am waffling. Catch you soon
Dickie not waffling at all its good to get some news from you and so pleased you had the same view of Dad as I. Here in Java I have a turtle called Eric in his memory. Flapper and I studied to become teachers at Wolverhampton Poly Dudley site, for a good many weeks we would travel by car together. How he had changed. Zoonie was the bouncer for our soul nights at the Oak, which are an important part of the history of northern soul. I don't know if you were from Coleham, but one of my partners in this was Kipper? If not you must be from Harlescott and my other partners were Dave and Andy Goddard? Never met Westcott since he left the Priory, nor yourself. Unless were you both in what I think was called the Red Lion in Pontesbury one night before a Pontesbury dance? If so I would probably have been with John Kelsall. I used to see a fair bit of Sal, when I returned to Shrewsbury, not that we were that close, just the same crowd. I spent most of my life in Manchester often seeing Chris Morgan, so that might explain it. Nobby was really a part of that crowd. But I became quiet friendly with Nobby and his brother Charlie as we used to get a Minsterley Motors coach to Yate All Nighters (near Bristol). Long John yes something of a character wasn't he? You maybe don't know it, but I actually did A level Art. So say hello to Keith for me next time you see him. I have him to thank for my love of Turner, Stubbs and above all Blake. Not that I am ever likely to return to the UK again, but every time I went to London I would spend hours in the Blake room in what in now Tate Britain.
😺😻😻😻♥️♥️
My cousin used to run the folk club at the Giffard in the 70,s ,wentthere one night after the speedway, Barbara Dickson was on that night . After closing time i remember she bought a round of drinks, I was included!!!😀
Great memory.
Bigoted judeo-christians and their Inquisition hunted, tortured and killed the presumed witches...
Maybe a little over reliant on the myth created by Margaret Murray, but yes.
A club of small men
I’d never heard of Thomas Weir before this. Now I’ll never forget him lol. Scotland seems to have been a hotbed of historical witchcraft? (Or witchcraft style shadow repression 🧙)Great story and vid 👍
Thanks Dan. Regrettably I don't know Scotland anything like as well as Wales, the Midlands and the North. But I have an absolute cracker planned about General Gregor MacGegor. It will appear on my main channel (the Magic of Java early December) and a year later on this channel. James I (VI of Scotland) believed that he was a victim of an international witchcraft conspiracy. He wrote Daemonologie in 1597. This outlined the practice of witchcraft and the legal consequences. Whilst yes it did result in persecution in Scotland and northern England it also restricted the potential interrogation and punishment compared with continental Europe.
I thought the last several years John was in a home after a fall before his death?
You could be right about that. I'm not entirely clear how Caroline took over. In fact, that bit is a little sketchy, so it would support your view. I know people who would know, but am a little preoccupied with claiming pensions right now.
Pauline yes you are correct he was in a home for two years. There is a lengthy vlog on the Inn by The Paranormal Files where this is confirmed.
Shropshire, a largely rural county is such an attractive place and steeped in local history.
It was a wonderful place to grow up. But I have to admit I couldn't wait to leave.
Sepi bgt

I love ur cat!
Mochie is very special. Because she is from the mountains she's a little feral. But she's also very considerate, so this just makes her so funny.
She is important. My cat Sheiba always sat on my lap when I tried to play a racing game. Because she was important!
Important and needs attention.
I grew up attending Emmanuel church. There are lots of experiences myself and others have had. A maid used to walk through the wall at the back of the organ. If you crept in during the early evening and listen at the door you could hear what sounded like the organ playing and people chatting. A man used to walk oout of the Lady Chapel making the flags swing and would stand in the hall doorway, especially if people were singing on the stage. I don't know if it was Charlie but we would all call him that lol
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for confirming my experiences in The Green Dragon pub back in the 90's! I used to go in there every Saturday night. One time we were helping the bar staff move things into the cellar. As I walked in there was a huge big Irish Wolfhound lying on the floor. I stopped in my tracks expecting it to bark, but as it looked up it slowly vanished. Once when I was standing looling through one of the upstairs windows (obviously not the unreachable one), I felt a lady in a large dress was stood just behind me also looking out. She felt like a friendly person so I didn’t move and it was like we were looking together. So good to finally know after all these years that it wasn't just imagination!
Well there are certainly a good few stories about the Green Dragon, so you are not alone.
She's beautiful! Cheeky girl, my cats always run over the keyboard of my computer as well! She looks like my boy cat, Butternut. Similar markings and colours.
She is always making us laugh. We think it's because she's from the mountains and has a little more wildness than our city cats.
Moochie is beautiful. Love the ginger cats they always have a lovely disposition.
Yes she is very sweet and that little bit funny.
The industrial buildings of Manchester are beautiful to me.
Love this tune. Right up there with Jimmy Conwell Cigarette Ashes. 🔥
Oh I didn't use any real tunes just the royalty free stuff from RUclips. RUclips are so strict on this. But I do spend some time looking for tunes, despite getting many complaints. I have uploaded vlogs on Wigan, The Wheel, The Cats and The Torch, but they are a month apart so stretch through to May.
Thanks for this relaxing and interesting video, Magic. The music was relaxing too. Shrewsbury looks a charming place with a unique atmosphere. I went once on a day trip so only spent a limited time there. Fantastic amount of knowledge you've got too, I remember Greenall Whitley, of course, and Ind Coope. I miss there being breweries....also Burtonwood brewery and Tetleys. This country has changed so much and not for the better.
Good to hear from you Carole. Yes I remember the old Wilderspool Brewery and regularly used to meetings there once it became offices. I seem to recall that Burtonwood was a good pint, I seem to remember drinking it in Conwy. Did you listen to the Llandudno vlog, as I suspected that you would enjoy it? Like Shrewsbury also a lovely place to visit.
Just re viaited this and its very interest stuff thank you for being so open and sharing with us ❤
Yes, I am surprised that its not been more popular. There is certainly something very odd about the official narrative, but I really don't know the truth.
