It's Been a While - But Our Canal Fishing Continues!
After a 4-5 month break, it feels great to finally get back to targeting perch on our local canal! With work commitments and weddings (huge congratulations to Wiggy and Lucy!), we haven't had much time to upload recently. But we're back, and ready to chase those big perch through the winter months.
The recent heavy rain made finding clear water a bit tricky, but we were up for the challenge. I'll stop talking now-enjoy the video, and thanks for sticking with us! 👍

With a few hours to spare and my new Zman lures in tow, I geared up for a little perch fishing session. As the day unfolded, the conditions couldn't have been better. Started off a bit slow but I knew it was only a matter of time before the perch would kick into feeding mode. Before I knew it, the water around me came alive with bait fish being chased in all directions. Twitching the new Zman G...

As the waters start to warm up we thought we would travel to Ilfracombe Pier for some LRF fishing and attempt to lure some mini species. Lure Fishing With A Dropshot Rig

Well, I headed to the canal with high hopes of catching some nice perch. With the conditions against me, I decided that the best rig would be the dropshot rig with a luminous micro spikey shad lure. I felt that the lure would have the most chance of standing out in the coloured water, and the dropshot rig would allow me to work the lure slowly at different depths. Hope you all enjoy.

    It is also worth noting that despite the trend in lure fishing of holding perch by their mouth, this is one of the DO NOTs in fish safety. The jaws on perch are quite soft, so if you hold it by the mouth and it kicks or flips, it can easily damage the fish and dislocate or break the jawbones.

  • @blackline66
    @blackline66 9 месяцев назад

    You strike and your drag goes? Maybe that's why you missed the fish. Drag set to just below line breaking strength helps let the rod tke the strain 😊 you can loosen the drag when the fish fights harder

    • @UltralightLads

      While we completely agree that perch shouldn't be hung from their jaws please take note that while we do lip grip them the body is always fully supported with the other hand so as to not cause any damage to the fish. We like to look after our local perch so we do all we can to make sure they go back in tip top condition.

    • @BrianGayAnglingImages
      @BrianGayAnglingImages 11 месяцев назад

      I’ve done a lot of fishing for bass in the USA in the past 20 years and most bass are returned alive as catch and release is very popular there now. I asked a pro guide on my first ever trip there why they hold them by the lip. He pointed out how strong the lip is. If you have ever handled a largemouth bass the lip is formidable. He then added that😮 they really do not want to disturb the slime coat by handling. This was also why in some states or tournaments they don’t use nets to avoid slime rub. In the Major League Fishing events they impose time penalties for any fish handling infringements. These include a fish brushing anglers clothing or the boat deck. They also have catch, weigh and release so no fish are retained. Of course they use the boga grip type scales so the lip is the only part that should come into contact with the angler or the scales. If the fish is really big they will lip grip and hold it horizontally for a photo with the minimal contact from the supporting hand but the weight is supported. In My experience lip grips do exercise more control but like all fish handling needs to be done with care and consideration. Certainly if one were to swing a fish round by the lip recklessly then something is probably ku going to go wrong just as if someone is gripping a fish far too hard around the soft tissue for pic, or let it clip and hit something. I’m not saying one way is right or another just that there is more to these practices than can first meet the eye.
