      Institutions are slow to change. They never seem to just flat out jump into a big change. It's always a slow half assed transfers of philosophy and equipment. Since the Glock was basically the LEO gun of choice for decades, many LEOs felt a safety would get them killed in the streets (meaning that they will forget to remove the safety when they must shoot a suspect). Despite the fact that previous to the Glock, the gun of choice for America's PDs were firearms like the Beretta 92fs and 1911s that had manual safeties. But the cops who came from the Glock era are refusing to learn and use manual safeties today. We are starting to see a resurgence in manual safeties.

    Another officer, in La Grange, Texas, was shot by his P320, possibly just after this video posted. One report says first responders found his handgun still latched into his retention holster. If you still have faith in the P320's safety, chamber a round, keep the gun pointed in a safe direction, and wiggle the slide on the frame. You are not just wiggling the slide, you are also wiggling the frame mounted trigger against the slide mounted striker sear. The striker is at full cock held by a light single action sear. Dry fire the P320 and note the rear of the slide moves vertically. Chamber another round, keep the gun pointed in a safe direction, and lift the rear of the slide. You are applying a force to separate the sear engagement. You're pulling the trigger part of the sear down from the striker. That's how the P320 naturally discharges. The frame mounted part of the sear is pulled down from the striker by the trigger. The striker block is a light piece of metal with rounded edges, held into place to stop the striker by a single coil hair spring. It's just my opinion, but I worry there's a way the striker can bounce past the block. When I bought my P320, Sig marketing material still said the striker wasn't fully cocked in battery. That's not true. Except for the striker block, a P320 with a round chambered isn't much different from a Colt SAA carried hammer back. Please don't do that! Please consider design vulnerabilities in any firearm, respect them all, and keep faithful to Cooper's four rules. I am not queasy about loaded guns and EDC. My current setup is a compact 1911 with a Swartz firing pin block. I appendix carry in a quality holster in Condition 1. Please don't do that without training from a competent instructor, practice, and a blood oath (yours) to discipline.

    That's all you need to do to qualify? hmm i know myself and most of my friends who could do that in their sleep lol.. not sure what the standards are for police to qualify, but seems to me for a person (Police officer) In panic and running around in public on the streets and at stores and shopping malls and gas stations, i would think they need a bit more to qualify to be safe to engage in combat against a suspect.. I think moving targets need to be added to qualification test..

    you know it's ok to take a gun apart and put together on youtube now right? you can remove the slide on youtube, the only thing that is prohibit, is videos instructing users how to remove the safety devices from firearms. It will also restrict videos showing automatic or homemade firearms for users under 18, other than that you can show taking a gun apart, i have videos on how you clean your handgun and show how to remove things and take slides off and all that and i show it on the video.. There is no rule anymore that prohibits you from taking the slide off the gun and other parts as well, except removing safety devices ..

    Its all training. When Glocks first came out in the 90's to replace revolvers there where multiple "accidental discharges" with the guns "going off on their own". (in Philly alone we had 20 in less then 6 months). Problem was there was zero training for handling the firearm and the revolver draw with a heavy trigger was ingrained in the officers vs the Glocks. (guess everyone commenting below was to young to remember all the bad press, thank god Glocks didnt have to deal with the internet, instead Glock just paid to have their bad press removed from newspapers and television reports, now a days it would have been a witch hunt for sure).

    • @patrickcarcamo622
      @patrickcarcamo622 Месяц назад

      True, but everyone forgets that there was a change in technology going from a revolver to a semi auto. But going from Glock to Sig? What changed? Semi auto vs semi auto, no difference in tech. Only thing that changed was the gun.

    • @jf3065
      @jf3065 Месяц назад

      @@patrickcarcamo622 the lack of the trigger safety is the big difference, ive seen people pull glocks out of their holster with the finger riding the side of the trigger (not in the trigger itself but the side edge). And the Sig does not have that to prevent an actual pull like the Glock trigger safety does. (if Sig implemented this like every other manufacturer you wouldnt have this issue). Again its training, the military does not have discharge issues as giant majority going in is pretty much learning to shoot their first handgun ever on the Sig, and because of that learn the do's and dont's vs the police departments that have always used Glocks, but made the switch to Sigs to officers who have always had a specific way they would ride the trigger while drawing from their holsters. (another issue is the holsters types, some holsters have more snag issues, which again, the trigger safety on the glock prevents). If people are worried about this there are plenty of aftermarket kits available from just installing a standard thumb safety like the m17/m18 have to a trigger safety like Agency Arms has for example. Or just learn proper holster discipline. (never heard of competition shooter having a accidental discharge with a P320 because they practice holstering techniques over and over again.

    Hearing this report about the poor training for cops it seems reasonable that they would be issued service pistols with an external safety just as the military does. Too my mind any striker fire gun should have a safety as the fireing pin is under constant preasure when a round is in the chamber. On the judicial side should you have an "ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE" you can be charged with Reckless Endangerment!!

    • @paddypibblet846

    Excellent review and analysis. I’m not a fan of the P320, I think the quality control has had some issues. When they first came out I saw them on my national guard deployment, and they had trouble feeding the ammo for their qual. When I got back home to my state trooper job I heard agencies were telling guys to keep the slide back for 2 weeks when off duty to get the spring broken in. My first qual with it, I was helping coach on the range, not a one could make it through a qual without some malfunction. However I never saw an M17 have a problem after that. So I think they had quality control issues, at least at the beginning. I agree the adding trigger safeties would be the best solution for most of the NDs being reported. As far as Safariland goes they had a couple of decades being the cock of the walk and didn’t spend that time refining and fixing flaws. I’ve had too many for training that had rocks and gravel still in them; I stopped using them in 2020.

    There is a reason the military required SIG to add an external safety to the P320... they recognized the potential of negligent discharges, due to lack of external safeties. IMHO, any dept that issues a P320 without a safety is culpable in any negligent discharges of those pistols. The M18 or M17, again IMHO, are awesome duty weapons. My personal choice is S&W M&P 2.0. But I’m coming from 14 years in the military ( 2nd bct 10th mountain division) let me tell you I feel the reason p320s having issues in law enforcement is it has no trigger safety. The lack of training I’ve seen not just in my agency but multiple training agency at least in my area is they don’t train enough so in a high stress situation or even a medium stress situation drawling then re-holstering without that extra step of safety can really make a difference. Most law enforcement require the bare minimum for qualification with their firearm and most officers give the bare minimum when it comes to training.

    I noticed a problem at 4:25 ...writing reports instead of proactively trying to stop crime. the problem with police is that they'd rather be sipping Starbucks or writing reports.....rather they should be looking to stop crime and start shootings criminals first rather than being caught off guard by them. You may be surprised but no one else is. I can't and wont rely on police because there aren't enough of you to keep everyone safe and even then a large percentage of the time innocent people are erroneously mistaken for the criminal. Look I understand it's a very unforgiving sometimes impossible job. but just look at the Uvalde Texas screw up and all the innocent people shot in their own homes. The level of incompetence in the Police community is inexcusable. especially in Knowing the civil rights of citizens and laws. 2nd and 4th amendment violations are rampant and egregious. searches require a warrant from a judge! The probable cause BS need to end,... made up framing Crap. All the more reason for citizens to be pro 2A and to be allowed to defend themselves even against the Law enforcement officers. You guys should be fighting for the public to be armed and trained to help protect YOU the fewer of you there are. Not the other way around. ATF is targeting the law abiding and not the criminals. The police are also too scared to engage real criminals and gangs engaged in actual black market trade of stolen arms too IMHO. It's a DEI WOKE POLITICAL AND GUTLESS SOFT ON CRIME POBLEM. Cops need to stop the gangs and gang violence and gang guns and gang black market trade of guns. Meanwhile OBAMA sells the Mexican cartel machine guns...... to try and prevent drugs..... no! prevent the illegal gun trade. I won't ever buy a sig p320. not a fault of the firearm? you just demonstrated out of battery and the drop failure is a well known issue that may not have been fixed in all guns in circulation. It's embarrassing and scary to be working alongside some of these people after watching them shoot. We have tried to up our standards a bit but people balk of course and change happens very slowly. One of the biggest problems associated with the training programs we are used to is that there is a lot of tradition and antiquated practices that need to go away.
