I have a question. Did not the ancient use of charcoal made things like toasting and boiling common before coal?

Being from the rural US I never really thought about coal. Occasionally someone will say something about the coal shoot in an old building but it was never the primary fuel in our area (as far as I know). It was fascinating to hear Ruth talk about the transition to coal and all of the trickle down effects. I would love to hear if there were similar effects when fuel changed to oil or electricity. Thank you for sharing.
