Exploring Wola, Warsaw, Poland - Scratching the surface

I'm starting to explore the city more deeply, moving north to south. I start off in Wola, a large city district that was nearly entirely wiped off the map and rebuilt.

Bunkers, schnitzels and Siedlce

Took a train from Siemiatycze to Siedlce. Unfortunately I got horribly sick which put me out of the game for a whole day. I suspect from the food. So for now this is the only Siedlce footage that I've been able to make.

I will give you all in the US and Western Europe simple advice on how to be a clean country. Don't let people from a third world country in, and you won't have a third world outside your window.
Hi, I was just wondering what you will be/are doing for work? I'm moving to Poland from the UK in the near future, so these videos are interesting for me. Thanks.
Hi Leon! I've just found your channel - it's great to see you settling into life in Warsaw. Well done for registering your address - a lot of people don't bother but it is technically mandatory and the easiest way to get your PESEL as a foreigner. But please remember to register your stay in Poland as an EU citizen at the Urząd Wojewódzki at ul. Marszałkowska 3/5. It's also a very simple process, though with a couple of extra steps. However, failure to do this may result in a hefty fine, whereas a lack of address registration is never actually penalised. Unless you've already got this sorted - maybe that's in a more recent video. I look forward to following your progress!
I’m an instant fan of your YT channel. Down to earth, humble and entertaining.
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it!
When the spring come the day become long flowers is everywhere life is amazing in Warsaw !
What is happening now in politics (Trump) indicates that Poland may again be sold and left alone. The déjà vu of 1939 is becoming real again.
🙂 smacznego...
Portions in Polish restaurants are too big for me. I could eat that for two days.🥴
That's right, you have to order one portion for two people 🙂
Are you interested in Poland? Unfortunately, in the Western media you probably won't learn that, for example, the Pole Jan Czochralski is called the father of electronics. A giant of science. The father of electronics. Without him, there would be no transistors, computers, smartphones. Jan Bożek created the first passenger car powered by steam. Ignacy Łukasiewicz created the world's first oil wells, the Pole Jacek Karpiński created the world's first computer, but the communists stopped the work. Deciphering the Enigma was not the work of the English, but of the Poles! Polish mathematicians Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski and Jerzy Różycki were pioneers during World War II, the bulletproof vest, or Blue Ray, or the lunar rover, the first isolation of vitamins(Kazimierz Funk), a Pole - all these things were created by the first Poles!
Well, you exaggerates somewhat. Everybody knows that the first computer was created in the US during the II WW and used in calculations of the Project Manhattan - building the first nuclear bomb. Karpinski put together printers, processor and keyboard and made, what one could call, a prototype of personal computer. The processor was designed by his team and was small as for the time - kind of breakthrough. And it were not communist who sabotaged the first models sent for presentation in London, but Western firms competing in this field - the communists needed every dollar and they would be very happy to sell it to the West. Yes, Poles broke the three-wheel Enigma machine first, but then the Germans added the forth wheel and was again impossible to decode. So, yes, the Poles did the initial work. But you can add a couple of other things. The inventor of the metal detector was a Pole who invented it for Montgomery's troops so they could quickly locate mines when crossing the mine fields during the Battle of Al Alamein (in preparation for attack and later) - a very important military invention, also very valuable after the war to de-mine Europe. The P51 Mustang, the best fighter-bomber of the II WW was actually also with polish input. The P51 ordered by the British in the USA and was first flown in 1940 but was performing poorly and the British were not happy. Then, the chief test pilot of the Royal Air Force asked a polish engineer to calculate the performance of P51 with a Rolls Roys engine. His calculations showed an excellent machine what was proven when the engine was installed in P51. And P51 Mustang became one of the best planes of the war and was even used in the Korean war in the 1950s. And a true gigant of science, Maria Curie-Skladowska. The first woman who received a Nobel prize, the only woman who received two Nobel prizes, and the only person who received Noble prizes in two different fields of science. Also she was the first woman who was employed as a professor to teach on the Sorbonne University in Paris, one of the most prestigious universities in the world at that time. On photographs of meetings of famous scientist of the first half of the XX century, the time when the modern science was born, there is always only one woman and that is Maria Curie-Skladowska. The University of Lublin is named in her memory.
Poland was destroyed during the II World War. She was the first country to face the Nazis in 1939 and the last country when the Russians crossed, fighting Nazis on the way to Berlin in 1944 and 1945. Poland, before the II WW, was a backward, agricultural country with 68% of population illiterate. During the war 15% of population perished, mostly intelligentsia, educated people and the Jews. After the war Poland fell under the communist rule. No help from the West, only help was coming from Russia as it was the only country with technology and industrialised capacity to help. No Western help was allowed by the Soviet Union. Yet, by 1980 Poland rebuilt and, from the backward, illiterate country before the war, Poland became industrialised country (in some industrial indications was in the first 10 countries in the world), with 98% of population educated to either, gymnasium (11 years education) or trade education (9 to 11 years) or university graduates. In 1980 Poland was one of the most educated country in the world. Amazingly, it all happened under the communist rule. This, rebuilt country and educated nation, is the legacy of our mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers strength and spirit. Poland also preserved its Christian culture and traditions what is also unique after being under communism.
7:46 Hahaha, It's me! 😅🤣
Haha really?
@WarsawDiaries Yes, I was there on skates at tuesday.😆
@@ginterka381996 great skating haha
@@LeondeLeeuw Dziękuję. 😊
7:55 WuZetka - a cake created in Warsaw and named after the W-Z Route (East-West Route, W stands for wschód, Z - zachód). And it looks like a street, with white line in the middle.
Correct, I was wondering if anyone would call out the cake :D
My favourite cake since childhood but it must be moist (some aren't). Had one or two or perhaps a tiny bit more while in Warsaw last fall. It was such a treat to the palate not mentioning memories
There are certain influential circles in the world that are trying to portray Poles as Nazi collaborators and accomplices in the Holocaust, but we are proud of our history ... a tragic history but with a happy ending.

Within a century, the world changes a lot. But even 20 years makes a difference. I moved out from Warsaw over 20 years ago. Many, many things, biuldings, people have changed this city. Warsaw castle itself was rebuilt quite sometime after the war. Its is quite astonishing that the whole city centre was rebuilt from the rubbles. I might say why.... Poland is so much hunted... and keep on being destroyed or wanted to be possess ??? Now quite a lot looks fine, up to "the standards" but Poland got destroyed again after was glued to the 'west'. We are getting low. Eaten by sparkly western toys and fed by poisons we importing ( or force to import ) rather to produce ourselves as used to.
It is worth to mention that many gettos were set in place of living Jews. Is like now. When foreigners come to different countries they tend to live with their own group, often backed with their churches nearby.
Your Card is only valid on SKM (red trains). KM (green trains) are regional trains. You are lucky that the tickets were not checked.😁
I recall it was checked actually, I'm quite sure it's valid for all regional trains within the city. Besides there's S trains that are green and regional trains that are red. But I'm not the expert.
@@WarsawDiaries I checked. You're right. I missed the change in favor of travelers. You can also travel by WKD train to suburban "garden cities". Three railroad companies have come to an agreement. I am impressed.🏆
Yes it's great. However I have only a Zone 1 subscription so don't think I can go very far.
Mucho trabajo
Majority of Jews from Warsaw Ghetto was exterminated in Treblinka ( about 100 km north-east from Warsaw ). Treblinka extermination camp was the second largest after Oswiecim ( Auschwitz ) with about 850 thousand victims. Treblinka was a place of immediate killing, there was no work performed by the Jews, they were immediately gassed and burnt after arrival.
I've seen countless Warsaw videos done by foreign-born youtubers, but none showing the Jewish cemetery. Until now.
I hope you like the video, thanks for watching
Amazing! My hometown is a shithole compared to that pearl warsaw 🤩
Always honour where you come from
In the Wola district there are many plaques and monuments commemorating people murdered during the Warsaw Uprising. We honor their memory always on August 1, the first day of the Uprising.
I like it. I also visit cemeteries when I go to a city for tourist purposes. 👍 The ghetto still exists under the sidewalks, lawns, and buildings. The rubble has not been removed. The buildings of Muranów are built on it and on ... bones. It's haunted there...
The statue shown here reminds about heroes of the past: ruclips.net/video/k5LLkWXDdLo/видео.htmlfeature=shared - while politics cause genocides of children until today.
Funny story, polish version of The Office takes place in Siedlce. I don't know much about Biała Podlaska, but it is not far from Kazimierz Dolny, which is the best for a summer. Lublin region is kind of specific, as you get there for purpose, like Festivals. So, for example you can visit Lublin on the very first Saturday of June for the big event called Night of Culture, or other small town called Krasnystaw, which in the summer is organizing event called 'Chmielaki' which is the oldest and biggest in Poland Oktoberfest-like-festival.
During winter time poles go on holiday to egipt
Jak widać Podlasie piękne o każdej porze roku.
And do you know why this is so? Because Poland has not and does not accept illegal immigrants
Wow, i just wanted to say, man, you have good english, then I saw you are actually dutch, so no wonder! I have dutch ancestors from my mothers side and polish ancestors from my fathers side. As it happened they met in the middle so I became german. Thank you for the view on the polish side of things! BTW have you already found kurwa bobr?
Thank you so much! Haven't seen any Bober.
You don't sound like other Dutch people when speaking English.
That's good I guess
Skąd Ty chłopie przyjechałeś że dla Ciebie jest czysto w Warszawie? 😂
I really appreciate that you have taken the effort to learn more about the city and its history, and that you have already learned some basic phrases. Welcome to Warsaw.
Thanks a lot!
Dobrze mówisz po polsku.👍
Dziękuje ❤️
Welcome to Poland! ❤

nice thx
Thank you for fixing those candles on the monument. 😢With this small act, you have stolen my heart.❤
A może chłopak ma spektrum autyzmu i nie może znieść, gdy przedmioty są w nieładzie.
As for the monument mentioned, contrary to external modernity, Poland is actually a country of ghosts of dead people, often very young, who died in hopeless battles. They are still remembered. You will see these ghosts if you live here longer.
Świetnie wymawiasz polskie słowa i bardzo fajnie, że ich się uczysz! Życzę Tobie z całego serca, żeby Polska stała się Twoim drugim domem, (bo pierwszym to pewnie niemożliwe), a może jednak…?
Thanks a lot 🙏
Bułgaria was much more dependent from the Soviet Union. That's why they have much more work to do to modernize. They also have a East European mindset, same religion and similar language like the Russians. Poland is Central Europe and we are closer to Germany, Czechia and Slovakia in terms of culture.
Do you know the girl who came to live in Poland years ago, has a vlog and travels a lot here? She is Dutch, too.
Mentality? Poland is a unique phenomenon. Simple people from villages adopted the behavior of the nobility, not the townspeople, as in other countries. That is why, for example, we use the term "sir".
The memorial site at 7:00 is dedicated to Soviet POWs murdered there by the Nazis in 1941-1942. In Biała Podlaska there is also a cemetery of Italian POWs who died there in 1943-1944 (captured by the Germans after Italy's surrender to the Allies in 1943).
As to housing, developers are getting more and more gready. They do too crap finishing sometimes. Look into that what covers guarantee and how long does it cover. Developers lobbying politicians. For Polish citizens, they pretend to make cheaper loans, and then the house prices are going up. Prices in Poland went up also after relocation of Ukrainians. Obviously, in towns and cities, fancy flat called apartment (=bloks of flats) are very common. The best bloks of flast were built after IIWW, in 50s and 60s. Thick brick walls. Before kamienice - dont know how to teanslate this type of biuldings. Just old typa of multifamily biulding but much more decorative outside with high ceilings- aroud 3,5 meters. The bad side of that was no hallway. The doors from room to room. Some new owners changing the layouts to modernised them. I can see now a lot of negatives ( not only in Poland). I hope someone more optimistic person will write you a comment with the topics you are interested in. All the best. P.S I love your attitude towards details. Sometimes i clean some rubbish from the streets - usually broken glass. My imagination doesn't allow me to pass without picking it. 🙃
Warszawski Hongkong is a good example of developer capitalism gone wrong.
Thank you for showing my hometown in Poland. Greetings from Edinburgh and Happy New Year :)

I'm from Perth in Western Australia. I think that Warsaw should be twinned with our lovely city. Hopefully one day, I can see Warsaw for myself. Wait for me!
