quitting my dream job: telling my manager, CSO, and team lead 😭
hi friends, while I was organizing my files I realized I had some footage from when I was job hunting and figuring out whether I could stay at my previous role. If you've seen my previous videos you'll know that I had to quit, but here are the behind the scenes, when I didn't know what the end outcome was, when I was still hopeful that I could stay. It wasn't easy to quit because I loved my team. I hope you enjoy this one.
ps: I had to go back and re-edit this video after initially uploading last week, apologies!

WHY I quit my NYC dream job and moved to Taiwan
Просмотров 10 тыс.Месяц назад
hi friends, I moved back to Taiwan a few weeks ago and posted a video about it. Since then, I've gotten quite a few questions from new and old friends asking me to elaborate more on the decision making, so here it is! the detailed thought process and decision making as to why I decided to quit my dream job in nyc and move to Taiwan. Similar to the last video, I talk about the 5 priorities in li...

      hi Raymond - re your questions: yes, I was lucky to have the opportunity of receiving education in English-speaking environments for a few years growing up. There is a policy for filing foreign earned income exclusion (link attached). I don't know much about it yet, but to my understanding, the maximum exclusion amount for income earned outside of the US is $126,500 USD for 2024. www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-earned-income-exclusion

    You are so brave to come to this decision! I moved back to Taiwan 3 months ago from New York because I lost my work visa, it's 5-6 years of life I built that I had to give up. I did not come back willingly but there's nothing else I could do with the situation. BUT it really is an amazing opportunity for me to deepen my relationship with my family and enjoy my job without worrying about being deported. I wouldn't say I'm satisfied with my life now (trying to make new friends is not easy) but it has been comfortably challenging (if that makes sense). Excited to see what's more to come for you and me both!! :D

Age creep on people and before you know it, our parents are too old and can’t walk, or talk, or travel anymore. I wish I had known this earlier. Good luck 🎉 I moved to Taipei after Uni graduation and lived there more than a decade. 1) work culture is definitely more different. They are quite traditional in their ways, and frugal in hiring outside training, etc. I worked for a top, publicly traded software company that was as global-obsessed as they get. 2) have family there? Important to have some 3) know lots of foreign-educated or ABC female friends who lived there but couldn’t find lifetime partners there, because they couldn’t date local guys. If you prefer English-speaking men or at least one with int’l experience, it’ll be tough to find an eligible one

      @krisliuliu 2 месяца назад

      thanks for the kind message! I've thought about filming a video like that but realized it's hard for me to comment on a "profile" of students that are more likely to get admitted. www.medill.northwestern.edu/imc/full-time/class-profile.html above is the class profile for 2022 (I couldn't find a more recent one), and you'll notice a cluster of majors and that the class skews young. However, that's just the "average." No matter what your background is, I think it's important to show that you have potential. I think it's critical to show that you have a level of understanding of the program and how it fits in your career roadmap. You might come from a health background, but you are looking for this program to get into healthcare marketing / healthcare branding, etc. I know that is a slightly vague answer, but hope that helps!

      @@krisliuliu Thank youu for a quick reply and sharing your perspective. I really appreciate your advice about focusing on potential and aligning my background with the career goals. This is definitely helpful. Although I have pretty good extracurriculars, volunteering and internship experiences, how much role do you think the GRE scores and CGPA play in getting accepted? (I just need to get an idea about that) P.S I also have some questions about the different tracks/sequences of the program and merit based scholarships etc, would it be okay if I drop you an email or dm you on insta?

      @@frizsid I think a good GRE score and CGPA are important, but it's never a determining factor for graduate admissions (my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt). I can't seem to find whether the program ever posted average scores for GRE or CGPA, but pretty safe to assume they're looking for above average as the program admissions are competitive. re: questions on sequences, sure! drop me an email, however, I finished the program 5 years ago and the sequences have been consolidated and curriculum has since changed, so I'm not sure I'll be super helpful.

    Did you go to Taipei American School? Where in Taiwan would you live in? Air pollution in Taiwan?

    • @krisliuliu
      @krisliuliu 2 месяца назад

      to answer your questions: 1. no, I didn't go to Taipei American School! But have a few friends that did :) 2. Since the job will be based in Taipei, that's where I'll be living in the future. 3. Great question, it differs based on the month and the location (where the wind blows). I would say in general, it's moderate to low levels of pollution. Of course, there's certain months when it's worse! I haven't been back often enough the last few years to witness a pattern though, just that my allergies act up from time to time.

    Taiwanese girls love Taiwan so much they don't care about high paying jobs in the US. Lifestyle is better in Taiwan for sure. I wish you all the luck. As far as working, you got play the American card well, and get into companies with great future. One great thing about Taiwan companies is that they like to keep their employees for a long time. the good companies usually pay a big bonus at end of the year.

      Thank you! I've definitely witnessed how people in Taiwan stay loyal to their companies for many years, very different to the States.

      @@krisliuliu depending on your family and your partner's earning ability, raising children in Taiwan could be cheaper than the US. But, Asians do have a work hard culture, but it should be about the same in NYC though. You can always move back to the US later. Best of luck!

    Working in Asia is completely different. The work environment is strict. You usually rarely get any OT. Forget about PTOs. You're also not allowed to clock out prior to your boss leaving even though, you're done for the day. Expect a dramatic pay cut compared to NYC. Expected since COL is smaller here than NYC. Good luck though. My end goal is to retire in Taiwan as well.

    • @krisliuliu
      @krisliuliu 2 месяца назад

      may I ask what type of company you are working at? I assume the work culture as compared to the States is a lot more strict, but thought the "not leaving before your boss" and "not being able to take PTOs" is more of a myth... again, things I'm anxious about but hoping they're more exaggerations than reality 🥺
