Mahabharata was meant to narrate the history of the Bharata dynasty, Kauravs and Pundavs. Sri Krishna was not meant to be its hero unlike Ram who was written as the central figure of Ramayana. In Mahabharata there were many strong characters like Arjuna, Bheema, Bhishma, Karna etc. but there was no central character unlike Ramayana. The Krishna character comes only from the middle part of Mahabharata. Yet ultimately Sri Krishna took away all the footage. A book named Harivansha was to be written later as an appendix to Mahabharata where the story of Sri Krishna's dynasty Jadu dynasty was written. Also stories of Sri Krishna from birth upto his appearance in Mahabharata was written in it. Sri Krishna was the central character of Harviansa. Harivansha was the model onto which purans were written later. The first purans were Bishnu and Bhagavad puran. Today Sri Krishna is the most favourite God in India and prayed by hundred of millions of people as supreme God in India and across the world ! Just think about it, initially he was not even thought as someone who deserves an epic wriiten taking him as the central character.
