Kiwi Tales podcasts and videos of Kiwis with interesting stories to tell.
I really enjoy interacting with people on a one on one basis, and trying to understand what makes them tick, and how they came to be where they are in their life today.
I have encountered so many people in my life that have such interesting stories to tell, and have their own unique perspective on the world, and I often find myself thinking what a shame it is we will never know their story.
These people are not always those we might imagine them to be. There are people who live their life quietly without a word as to what they’ve done in their past. There are old folks who have done things in younger days that we would think impossible now.
Everyone has a story to tell, and that is my goal with this little idea, to try and tell them, and in doing so to encourage, provide hope, and to inspire.

Ewan Smith - The Story of Air Rarotonga
Ewan arrived in Rarotonga in 1973, founded Air Rarotonga in 1978, and is still the Managing Director nearly 50 years later.
Ewans leadership and commitment to the people of the Cook Islands has formed Air Rarotonga into the extremely well respected airline that is it today - both domestically and internationally.
In this interview he tells the story of how it all started, the ups and downs of running an airline in the remote south pacific, and also how personal tragedy has shaped his and his family's lives.

This was su ch an interesting interview, what a capable man Ewen is. I became very emotional when it was revealed that Ewan had lost two children to road accidents...how do you survive that type of tragedy. Thanks for producing this video Craig, This material should be televised.
Thanks for the positive feedback! Yes, very tough thing to have to go through losing two children. Unfortunately the only stuff "televised" these days is quality material like "Married at First Sight" or "The Bachelorette" !!
Ewan, what a wonderful and gutsy dream that came to fruition.. I may have flown with you on an Aero Commander out of Rotorua - Edgecumbe - Rotorua - Auckland way back I am 85 now and retired flight instructor, took on flying at the age of 61 and not that long after invited to do the instructor course. The rest was history until retiring. Not to take away any one thing from your remarkable vision and foresight in developing Air Rarotonga. No doubt many a hurdle and opposition from a certain airline at the time. But good for you if I may say so and not being patronising in any way. Your airline may have been responsible in getting students to get to and from to College down in New Zealand over time. I think the Peyroux boys may have been some. They went to St Patrick's College Silverstream at Heretaunga, North of Wellington. Anyway what a magnificent achievement you accomplished in mounting all the hurdles along the way to establish AND Maintain Rarotonga Airline. I hope to visit Rarotonga again before I turn my toes up. Oh, this makes me so so happy, thank you for this interview, I'm so glad to hear more from Ruth after reading her books! I was in New Zealand two weeks ago with my friends, and I picked up her first book in Arrowtown and I couldn't put it down! Just as I finished reading it, fate had it that I discovered her second book in a bookshop in Christchurch. I cried and laughed through her stories. What a spirit Ruth is!

Ruth's story went straight to my heart, and helped me to finally, at age 75, understand my life better. What a welcome sigh of relief. This podcast was amazing. You both spoke in such honesty. What an amazing story. I am from Holland and we are reading Ruth Shaws book with my readingclub of eight women. I searched on the internet for information so I can tell more about Ruth and her story when we will get together to talk about her book. Very nice to be able to see her in your podcast. While reading her book I kept on searching on googlemaps where ever she has been. It made me want to visite New Zealand but for me it is the other side of the world.Thank you for making this podcast.
