I started this channel to share my love of automotive work and provide a resource of knowledge and growth. I’ve grown up under the instruction of a father who spent years in the automotive industry. We found peace and bonded over the turn of a wrench and the stain of grease. I now look forward to creating those memories with my own sons.

I was always told to put it in neutral before driving to move the trans fluid around before load is applied. But I don’t know if that’s true
As a mechanic, you only need to let you car warm up for 30 seconds, till your car idles back down to around 800rpm.
There’s actually quite a bit of variables to this rule, which you should know. However generally speaking, in cold temps, you should let your engine warm up before taking off. I didn’t specify a time in the video, and also listed additional benefits, which to the common driver, matters. Thanks for watching and for the interaction.
Depending on how cold it is and what engine you have, it could be minutes before your PCM reaches closed loop and your idle drops. My Corolla takes about 45 seconds, my Pilot takes about 30 seconds, my Camaro takes about 1.5 min, and my Mustang can take 2 minutes when it's 30 degrees out before the RPMs drop. A larger engine generally takes longer to warm up.
Great feedback and very true Bill. Thanks for watching.
@billspangler2685 that is why i added "or till your idle drops" i agree with you, my camaro ls3 takes a good bit till it drops to the idling rpm.
Window defrosters and actually having heat as you drive
At what temps? Dumb?
I’m not certain if “Dumb” is a question or a statement, however there’s many variables to how long to let your engine warm. Age, type, temp, etc. If you feel like you need more education on the matter research goes a long way. This video isn’t for the experts or wanna be experts, but the every day driver with little to no knowledge that needs to create better habits for long engine life. Thanks for watching
@@vanwinklesgarage Engine Specs are based at a low of 30F. If the engine is not below that temperature, warming up is pointless. It is good to drive at first at low speeds. OIL is not the only lubricant. These instructions overlook those. Transmissions and truck differentials. Diesels should have a engine block heater due to the heavier oils. But for gas vehicles, warming up is pointless above 30f. If you frequently see temps below 30F, get the engine block heater. After starting, drive without hitting high revs for the engine.
Thanks for the input. This seems to be a “hot” topic in the community, but in my video I never mentioned warming up your car in specific temperatures, nor that oil is the only lubricant. I don’t agree that warming up is pointless for gas vehicles above 30f, but I’ll leave that point there. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.
Did you remove the little pocket on the driver side visor?
If you’re referring to the plastic sleeve “pocket”, I did not. I left it. It’s a bit stained, but in my experience removing it makes it look worse. I will most likely remove the warning decals at some point in the future. Thanks for watching!
Actually that brings up another question. I'm in Colorado and we have adopted California emission standards. I had my cat stolen and had to replace it with a CARB compliant one. I've been having some really bad performance and errors that I've been trying to chase down. Wondering if i also needed to replace the o2 sensor with a California one along with the cat?
That’s a really fantastic question and a unique issue. I wonder how the other CAT would interact with your ECU. Depending on the specifics of the errors or performance issues you’re having, I would absolutely try to replace both O2’s with the Cali versions to see if it corrected your issues. Ultimately it’s a small cost if it works. You gotta come back and let me know how this plays out! Thanks for watching and for the interaction. I hope you get your performance issues corrected.
Heeeey I recognized that engine right away. Spooky because I need to tighten my alternator belt on my 4runner 😅
If you watch my video you’ll see that my belts were half the tension they should have been. If I had just done the deflection method, I wouldn’t have caught it. This tool has allowed me to quickly and confidently check tension after installation and add that to an easy maintenance check at regular intervals.
Good video of how to perform the change over. Did you check the current draw and power/heat dissipation of the new blubs? Although the LED itself should draw less current and use less power/heat the required resistor to limit current to the LED will produce heat. The concern is that this heat will not melt or damage the lens or plastic material of the socket. One would think the manufacturer has taken that into consideration but the bulb is designed for many vehicles. Is there a spec. for the blub?
What about the lower linkage rubber bushings where the shifter attaches to the transmission shift rod and the rubber bushings on the transmission selector arm where the shift rod attaches to the selector arm? Those should be done while you're under there as they get really soft and lose their firmness and sometimes they are gone completely.
All valid points and great feedback. Keep in mind that this work is being done on my personal Runner and I make these videos to help the community as I approach a job. This video was made specifically for the Shifter Bushings, so that’s where my focus was. As our vehicles are aging, there’s plenty of future projects to come and cover. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
good video. Would have been good to know how you tested and concluded that the problem was the brushes and not something else.
Thanks for the feedback, that’s very valuable. You’re not wrong, and I should have spoken more on that topic. I’ll try and make a RUclips short as a follow up to this video and speak on it. Thanks for watching and taking the time comment.
Nice find! My 2002 was missing several things when I bought it. Finally found a tonneau cover this year. It bugs me that they discontinued the cargo mats but factory floor mats are still readily available. Cool channel, new sub.
Hey Mark, thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. I couldn’t agree more with you regarding the cargo mats. Congrats on finding your tonneau cover! Whether I use mine or not, it makes me feel like the Runner is more complete. I appreciate the sub very much! If you ever have any suggestions on things you want to see let me know. Also check out my shorts if you haven’t, I cover some different stuff. Thanks again!
Any problems with your tints peeling with these in channels and opening/closing windows?
I’ve not had any problems at all with tint peel. After installation of the Vent Visors I rolled the windows up and the next time I rolled any of them down was one week later. I’m not sure if that helped but it didn’t hurt. I roll the windows up and down as needed now (front and back as I have passengers) and don’t have any issues. Very pleased. Thanks so much for the question and for watching.
Fantastic video! I will be doing this myself soon. I have a 2002 with 249k miles. I’m assuming the lbj’s are original as well. I have other things I need to do also, like the tundra brake upgrade! Have you done this? Would love to see a video on it. Just one quick note though, would have like to see how you tied up the hub on top. You mentioned you did, but didn’t show it. Anyway, great video!
Another reason you dont look in your mirrors. Whats behind you is ancient history
Its a slinky
Why the heck do you sound like that I’m sorry but not to be rude again sounds weird
No apologies needed. I’m just living my dream without fear of judgement and having fun doing it! Thanks for watching and for the feedback.
The morons are coming out of the woodwork again.....lol
If that happened in South Africa, it would've been GONE IN 60 SECONDS 😂😂😂
We wouldn’t have this video!
@@vanwinklesgarage 🤣💯
Meth head dreaming. This must be heaven.
I agree with all these comments....that is copper wiring and worth a small fortune
I thought that was laid out for no parking
😂🤣
I always tell myself when I'm having a bad day, that there is always someone else out there whose day is even worse than mine😂
I lived that exact reality that day 🤣
Did someone lose their slinky? 😉
Man, that is a fortune in copper, take that to the scrapyard, that would be one hell of a payday
I was thinking the same. That's a ton of money work of copper
I just want to know the talk the boss of the company had with that one employee lol
😬😬
Looks like a small fortune of copper $$$$$
That is a pile of money on that road. Copper is worth a bundle
That got to be copper, that’s money all over the road 😁
It's art😂
That reply wins 😂
Nice write up. I had severe interference when i tried led bulbs in mine. Could’ve been the brand. Went back with the old halogen.
Thanks for the compliment. What type of interference did you experience? I’ve swapped over and haven’t had any issues but interested to hear more about your’s. I’ll have another video up about my LED’s soon. Thanks for watching!
That’s a reason I haven’t gone LED in my 4Runner…RF noise coming into my radio affecting transmit and receive. If this brand doesn’t have noise I am down to grab a set!!👍🏼
Hey Rally, I’ll go ahead and spoil my next video for you. I have had zero issues with RF noise. With that said, could it be my radio brand? I’m not certain, but I don’t think so as my head unit is old and about to get replaced as well. For the cost of these LED’s, I would take a shot. They are amazing and hopefully you’ll see that for yourself when I release my video soon.
@ thanks for replying so quick! I will definitely look forward to the next vid. My Runner is a ‘98 but swapped to the 99+ headlights. The 96-98 housing design was dim compared to the later models. So ya better bulbs will a definite plus!
Absolutely! These have been a game changer. Hoping to get the video pushed out by this weekend. Thanks again for stopping by.
Whats the product number for the PRND2L panel?
The part number depends on your model. You can look it up by the name “plate control position indicator” One of the part numbers is 35921-35171 if that helps your search. Good luck!
Very clean 3rd Gen ! 🙌🏻
Thanks for watching! I love this generation 4Runner and appreciate the compliment!
What year and model Cadillac are you swapping? I’d love to do that on mine.
They came from a ‘93 Cadillac Deville. Video of the car I pulled them from is linked and also in my channel.
I like how you cleaned up that alternator! Job well done. Great camera work and step by step!
Thanks for the feedback! I’ve been working on trying to have better camera work for a better viewing experience. Also, gotta clean as you work. These Alternator’s are beast.
I converted all my interior and exterior on my ‘97 to LED 6 months ago. The turn signal bulbs were a real pain with the fast-blinking issue (required a different relay) and the headlights (flooded everywhere, so I kept the originals since I can’t afford the full headlight kits). Looking forward to the rest of your videos!
Hey Jimmy, thanks for watching again! I’m working on the remaining videos and will have them out soon. I’m experiencing the same “hyper blink” issue and will be fixing it with that relay. I knew it was a possibility but wanted to swap it first before getting the relay. I also need new Interior LED’s. I swapped interior about two years ago but not happy with the product I used and result, so will be getting new Auxito’s. Happy Thanksgiving!
I am so jelly... I have the mat in mine, but missing the cargo cover.
I felt like I found the Crown Jewels when I saw it. The only thing that would feel better is If I ever find a Sport Hood for a good deal.
I am so doing this for my 4Runner. And for my wife's Camry too.
Absolutely, you should! Thanks for watching and for the comments.
@@vanwinklesgarage Right after watching the video (shortly after midnight) I ran out and snapped a picture of my ODO. LOL
Haha that’s awesome! Don’t waste any time, sounds exactly like something I would do.
Why did you replace the sensors? I have a 2002 4Runner and check engine light came on. I scanned and got code 0420. Cat converter. But I wonder if replacing the sensors would fix it. Thanks
Hey, thanks for the question! I also had thrown a P0420 code. I replaced both O2 sensors and all codes went away. This fixed my issue. I would absolutely replace both O2 sensors before doing anything with your catalytic converter. I would bet this would fix your issue and get you back running better. If you do it, come back and let me know the results. Good luck!
That 4.5 ltr was pretty solid.
Man that looks like an alpine cda-7995 in dash. I had one if it’s the same. They were top of the line
Very impressive eye, but unfortunately this one isn’t the Alpine. Actually, this one will be leaving soon for an upgraded car play model. Alpine’s were the best back in the day.
Stay away from that 4100.
Absolutely…..
Not everyone has a terrible experience with the HT 4100.
Bro those back seats are the peak of comfort. No Mercedes or BMW can touch the old Caddy seats
I’m wanting to pull some that I really like someday and make a custom “couch” for my garage. Love them!
@ brooo that would be so sick
I know! It’s happening someday
I truly miss my Lincoln Town car 86 model! It had the tiny electric windows and then the regular window that would come down second after it!
Oh man, I remember that!! What a flashback. I would love to run across one of those again. Thanks for the comment.
That Deville reminds me of Frankie’s grandpa
Weve got one of these just rotting in the backyard i wish i had the time and space to work on it
That hurts….i’ve been there before though. Just hate to see them sit.
@vanwinklesgarage still got my first rig parked... 89 ram charger less than 100k miles and i had to park it 5 years ago because on a good day i get 8 miles to the gallon and works 50 miles one way
Whoaaaa ‘89 Ram Charger is sweet! Keep it for sure and get that baby rolling again someday. What color combo is it? Interior? Is it all stock or have you done anything to it?
@@vanwinklesgarage still stock. Motor has 40k less than body though. Previous owner had issues off the lot so he got a free motor swap from the dealer. Two tone red an white red interior
Oh man, that’s the best color combo in my mind. What a great ride you have, and a newer motor to boot. I hope you get it back on the road.
those long Cadillac lights work perfectly in a chevy love truck! perfect shape just gotta cut the back fenders to accommodate
I wouldn’t have thought about that initially, but they would look really good on a LUV. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
How long did it take after you submitted the odometer picture did it take for the sticker to come?
It actually came to me quite fast. I would say within 2 weeks easily. Thanks so much for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Im blown away the chrome on the side markers isnt rock chipped, this was sombodys baby
Absolutely, I couldn’t believe it. After I cleaned them up they truly look like New Old Stock. This was definitely kept covered in it’s life.
I would love a set for my little Carolla.
When Mazda said let's steal the ranger and Ford won't say a word. And Ford didn't say a word lol I've got a 97 ext cab that's identical to that Mazda
Ford Ranger with a different badge. Reminds me of the old Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth Neon of the early 2000’s. Same car, three different badges depending on what part of the country you bought it in.
