Bit rot! 😜

I added it! Cheers!
Out of curiosity, how does it look if you also change the border color to match the background color?
You can't tell where buttons are or get the cool 3D effect when you click them
@@CoCoNutBob - That's weird - it actually made the 3D effect better in Gshell. (To clarify, I mean the border color for the full screen, not parts of your program display, using the border palette register)
@@CurtisBoyle yeah I haven't done anything with border control... I hope I don't get invaded 😜
Ok, thinking about it more clearly, there should be a raised border around the upper menu area. I'll definitely look into this for any future versions
Previously, you suggested some sort of black foam board to cover the empty spaces. I wonder if you could use the KiCAD data to produce some sort of SVG file. From there I'm sure I could use that to create a printable template using Inkscape, slap that onto some sort of black (or other color?) foam board and carefully and slowly and as perfectly as I am capable of (hint: I'm not all that capable but I'll try) cut out a finishing frame for the keyboard. I'm told my switches and keycaps will arrive today so hoping I can find time to do the build tomorrow! Should be fun! Will provide pictures on the discord. I think this will look great! Eagerly awaiting whatever solutions are found to modify the number row keys as well as others. I had considered using WASD services to have them print my keycaps but they only do the "Cherry/OEM" profile. While I'm sure it will look and feel fine so long as I observe the rows, I rather prefer the XDA profile because it is a bit more universal... and versatile... universatile! Yeah... I'll use that word I just made up.
I don't know if you did this in one take or you have lots of editing, either way, the result was VERY good. It has the "right amount" of narration. Not too much, and definitely enough useful information presented. At no point did I find myself drifting away as the progress clicked along. You seem to have covered every aspect in great detail which is great. It wasn't just a build video (which would have been enough) but you went into to explain all of the nuances is great and informative detail. There was a point where you used some label and line to point to a common error which will make its way into the process (keys not perfectly seated) -- how did you do that? Was that a function of the software you used or was that really good rotoscoping? The effect is exactly right and perfectly smooth. The common correction to the common error should set even L.Curtis at ease if he ever dared to try soldering again. Over all, I must say the quality of your videos have really ramped up in every way that I can tell. If you put effort into it, it's hard to tell because the result looks effortless. That surface mount LED.... amazing. I like the method you used to get in on there. I think doing it your way I might actually be able to pull that off but the tiny stuff is pretty intimidating. There's something about the geeky-cool aesthetic of using a "raw circuit board." I found myself imagining a 3D printed cover of some sort but the more I look at it, the more I rather like the "I did it myself" nature of the thing. Now obviously some people will be concerned about "things getting in there" because that standard with any and all keyboards, especially among those who eat potato chips. :) So I wonder if there's some sort of sealer that would be friendly to the electronics and switches. In any case, the over-all design and implementation is well thought out and executed. There is a question though about the space bar decision. Most people "stick with the way everyone else does it" but you didn't. You went for the more simple approach of using two switches. I think this approach is probably just fine. And it's definitely far more simple. Simple equates to "easy to implement" and especially "easy to build" and that's very much worth something! While one of my first questions was "where's the space bar and it's mechanical arm and the other things required to make a space bar work?" I've always taken it for granted that any keyboard needs to have all of that stuff though I have to admit, it never occurred to me to ask "why?" And yet in your design implementation it all seems to look and behave just fine. I think everyone interested in CoCo Retro things should try this project for a wide variety of reasons. But one should be just to gain some confidence and practice with soldering things. This project is SIMPLE simple simple and it's clear everything about it had this in mind. For people out here, building confidence is something we all need to continue with the hobby. Your implementation is an excellent example of a great first project. And when done, that "I did it myself!" feeling we get from looking at it when it's done results in all of the positive feelings just to look at it.
Thanks for the kind words, and so many of them ;-D To answer about the editing, yes, I shot multiple takes, either due to incomplete information or just bad footage/audio in the first take. Editing took way longer than I wanted, but it seems the work has paid off! I almost always have to go back and re-shoot an intro and outro, and for some reason I did this one without a script, which really helps with planning. The callout effect is just one of the Titles in DaVinci Resolve, and I applied keyframes the endpoint of the line. There's a stationary dot at the endpoint that I couldn't figure out how to make follow the line... seems like a bug in the effect. Typically I start at the last frame and set the X/Y coordinates, then back up to the start of the effect and set a keyframe at the starting coordinates, and it follows the (also) keyframed video perfectly. Cheers, and thanks again!
How do you know about the many sparklies? lol!
Uhh... a friend told me! lol Tell you what... that capacitor blew up with gusto!

I appreciate your help with mine! I definitely want to try those mixed-mode cassette programs!
Thanks for the reminder to upload the fixed wav files.
Very awesome, just seeing this video after talking to you just the other day on discord and you mentioning this mod to me. I'm fairly excited to try it out.
Man, I love this!
Seems to work great now!
I requested to be on his wait list but I don't think he likes me. I asked him about the "CoCo fix" you mentioned before and I think it offended him. Anyway, looks like I won't get one. :( How goes the keyboard work?
Yeah, this issue was a bit of a thorn in his side once it was discovered. I'm glad he got it sorted, and would like to think I contributed in some small way. Keyboard v2 is on the way, and should be ready to ship almost upon arrival. I will include the led (installed) and keyboard connector with each board.
I wonder what could be done to make the WD chip perform more like the Motorola PIA. From the outside it looks like whatever things are being done to create sound are happening way too fast in terms of timing. The tones still seem normal. If there's a way to externally create a "slow mode" then high speed modes can be more meaningful. Such an upgrade on a CoCo2 would make quite a difference I imagine.
So you were way ahead of me when you had the genius idea of integrating lights into the keyboard project. I'll do you one better. There are often many things we do with CoCo in the way of adding "switches" for things. Some people use them for turbo or switching among ROMs (which is definitely something I want to do). But how to "cater": to them all? After all, lights and switches in the keyboard shell is better than a case mod! So my idea is a bank of switches! They can be dip switches or something more easy to manipulate. And the plus is that it adds to the old fashioned "hacker" instinct nearly all CoCo users have in common! Please consider adding switches which can then be used to wire over to internal CoCo mods!
I had fun at CoCoFEST! I hope you did too! :D
Looks great
Artemis, we have lift off! I can't wait to see it in action.
Sounds like a nifty keyboard for sure. Especially for those that are from the PC gaming style layouts on the arrow keys :)
I think my first exposure to the inverted T was a Tandy 1000 keyboard. It made me want to convert that keyboard to work with a CoCo 🙃 unfortunately, (or fortunately) it wasn't mine.
Heck yeah, sign me up! 😅
You may have to wait for v2... What color do you prefer? I was thinking of white, but blue or purple are... 💚
@@CoCoNutBobWhite is fine, all the colors are great though!
I would love to see it after you get it all put together and operational.
Timing is everything, right? About a week ago, I received a KeyFix 3 to fix one of my Coco 3s. Haven't installed it yet. I'm looking forward to seeing you build this up and show what it looks like completed and in an actual Coco. Keep up the great work.
I had a similar one (MrDave6309's) on display at CoCofest. It's really nice! Just need the right keycaps now (ASCII instead of ANSI), but I have a plan!
I need one of those! That looks awesome!!! And I've been working on CoCo keycaps with WASD keyboards. So that might go well together!
I put my info in the description, shoot me an email.
What kind of keycaps are you doing? I've seen some interesting techniques on YT.
@@CoCoNutBob Yeah I just order my designs straight from WASD. Let your customers order their own and even design their own.
Intrigued. Improved keyboard layout, it looks like. I cannot hear the audio where I am -- so I'll ask: To hook in a real CoCo, or USB for computer emulator use?
For real CoCos
woot!!!! are you going to make this available somehow?
I'm not sharing gerbers at this point, but you can email me (see description)
Yes, once I have verified all the things I need to. Already corrected the mounting holes and a solder mask issue, but no major problems expected.
I would pay a lot for a better case for my mega mini mpi. The slots are shallow and one day I saw two of my cartridges were no longer "vertical" because someone messed with it. Wouldn't have been possible if I were using a regular MPI or if the case was better.
A bar between the two cartridges, or even just a good bump on the edges to prevent leaning carts
@@CoCoNutBob If I were using the MPI-mini, I'd probably drill a couple of holes and cut a small piece of something to go between the two slots. On mine? The Mega-mini? No such means of obvious attachment. Just hoping someone with a 3D printer would see this and allow me to pay them to make the "something" I need. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been made already.
Reach out to John Strong... He might have some ideas and the ability to make them happen.

very clean, nice work!
I would have never guessed it.
...even _after_ I heard it! 🤣
I discovered the hard way that those SCART to HDMI converters aren’t all the same. I found two units identical to yours but one was a few dollars cheaper. I opted for that one, but found that the box didn’t support RGB at all! I returned it and got the more expensive one and all was good. So if anyone buys one of these boxes, don’t trust the pictures, read the feature list carefully and make sure it calls out RGB support specifically! 😃
Newer versions and updates of Windows no longer shows FAT32 as an option. Open command prompt as administrator and enter: "format /FS:FAT32 X:" where X: is the drive letter, the mount point or the volume name.
The perfect socket!
Nice work but what system is that?
Tandy Color Computer 3
You keep saying Western Digital. WDC is short for Western Design Centre
Yes, you're right! Too many acronyms!
Thank you for making this video! Listening and watching your instruction, I was able to convert a Mach I PC joystick over to my CoCo and it worked perfectly! Although I have a spot in my heart for the Radio Shack joysticks, the Mach I is so much nicer to use.
That's awesome! Congrats on the conversion! Always fun playing old favorites with a "new" controller
Interesting. I have a CoCo 3 that I suspect has a bad keyboard PIA. Good to know there is a currently manufactured replacement, but it could be a problem if it messes up other stuff. Hmm.
There are a few originals on the market, but they are as-removed and drying up. Edit: more likely your keyboard mylar has deteriorated. Replacement boards are available! "Keyfix3" for example
Try Donkey Kong Remixed, it's a little more challenging with the new chip.
Oddly, both Donkey Kong releases play at normal speed on this machine. 🤔
Wonder if the dual button "2"s are to allow for left- or right-handed gameplay...
Probably, but it drove me nuts having the primary button on top of the stick, moving the stick slightly every time I press the button. Immediately swapped them around, and yes, I use the bottoms exactly that way, as I swap hands depending on the game. It's a good thumb bottom.
I didn't know about the extra "rankings" comments that having a Sound Speech Pack enables. They are given at the end of each game. I went dumping through the code to find out what they are, so here is a list: "Try it again Captain. This time open your eyes" "Do you need some coffee to help you wake up" "Go back to sleep Captain" "You are getting there Captain. Just a little more practice" "You will need to get better than this to remain Captain" "You should have let your First Officer run this mission" "You are a fine starship Captain" "Your score is excellent. You should be promoted to Admiral"
Wow a mix of Star Wars and Star Trek all in one game, I played versions of this on a few computers the Ti99/4a version is one I know quite well "Star Trek strategic operations simulator" it's called, it's a fun game I must try this version (I don't have a speech pack though)
Would be great to see you this Thursday, it's the featured game! One of us... One of us...

Great work! I have one of @MrDave6309 keyboards and it's great!
Good job on the keyboard build.. i made these a couple of years ago just for the fun of of making a better gaming keyboard and being able to have custom color caps :)
You gotta build it.. i have a few boards left..
Number one watch for The Ribbon Cable on the keyboard... Too many times flopping that around you going to break it off. Number two don't lay the top cover upside down on your work bench You're only adding scratches to it. Number three that water getting into that rubber pad was probably because the pad was upside down sitting on a table and water apparently got spilled on the table and was probably absorbed there that's why people shouldn't eat and drink around computers. I don't know why you had such a hard time with your screwdriver and the screws.. The screwdriver I was using never slipped around in the slots of the screw.. I didn't see you remove the felt from the cartridge port. Usually that's dried out and rotted and prevent some games from running correctly it's best to remove it.
Neato! Each of those old controllers had a unique story to tell.
Stream starts @10:00 Apparently a really bad internet connection today... sorry! Pro-tip: 1.5X playback speed! 😉
My first computer was a TDP 100 in 1984 or 1985. It was a CoCo clone. Why on earth are you still coding for this machine?
Why wouldn't we? Have you seen what a CoCo 3 can do? Even when the Internet is down! (though we _can_ Internet.)
@@CoCoNutBob I have been a software engineer for almost 35 years and those poke statements look just as mysterious as they did back then. 😀
I actually just pulled my CoCos out of storage after a 20+ year hiatus... I'm amazed at the development still underway for the beloved Color Computer! SD storage, modern SRAM, wifi, etc. I still have my F-board CoCo 1, and it still works (after I fixed it.)
LA CoCo - Can the modified cable still be used with a cassette recorder?
I will verify, but I don't see why it wouldn't. Good question that I'm surprised I didn't test.
Confirmed that the old cassette deck still works perfectly with this resistor in place. Thanks for the reminder!
I have no idea whats going on here, but i apreciate the nerditude, good video <3
These old computers could run at double clock speed, but you can't use disk/cassette I/O when it's in that mode. I always like to have an indicator LED so I can tell what clock speed I'm running at a glance, especially during program development.
When I learned electronics, the course taught electron flow current direction and started with vacuum tube active elements. When it got to semiconductors it seemed that all the diodes pointed backwards. I don't blame you at all for having your diode symbols reversed. :)
The board looks great! I definitely want one.
