Customized Gretsch Boxcar 9200
This is a new Resonator that I've customized with vintage electronics. The pickup is a Teisco 60s Gold Foil pickup with vintage wiring. New 500k pots with vintage chicken head knobs. The pickguard is made from pearloid similar to the headstock and tinted to match. The guitar has been setup to play more easily than the factory setup. It's a laminated mahogany body with a great v-style neck.

I had several materials and wanted to try a few ideas. So, I decided to build a 12 fret guitar and try out several things... this video shows several trial and failure ideas. I don't take these "side roads" on guitars i'm building for others unless I've tried the ideas first... this is me trying several things. Some work out some not so much. In the end, this was a fun project I'll return to fr...

Using a Cut Capo
Просмотров 384 года назад
This video demonstrates how you can use a normal soul capo that’s been modified to play standard tuning chords in various ways. I’ve been doing this for many years and I combine a cut capo with a full standard capo and play all the way up the neck in various keys in normal cord fingering patterns.

      I would love to find a 1930s or 40s model. I’ve played a few at Carter’s in Nashville and the older ones are far more lightly built. Loud and open. Ladder braced guitars have a unique sound.

    Yes very nice, and I like the way Alvarez do their Bridge design in regards to the 'break angle' Iv'e noticed a few Cort Acoustic's do the same 😊

    • @ChuckEzell
      @ChuckEzell 7 месяцев назад

      Yep, you're right @susanroycroft89. I think the break angle is really important - usually something I try to pay attention when setting the neck angle when I build or repair guitars. The force of the string down across a good bone saddle does a better job of transferring the string vibrations into the bridge and then into the top. Thickness and wood choice of the bridge also makes a difference. I weigh my bridges to make sure they are under 40 grams. Separating out the bridge/saddle on the more expensive versions from the pins with an ebony inset is a really unique idea too. Maybe no bridge lift ever??

    So glad I found you online, Charles. This guitar is beautiful, sounds great, but as soon as I plugged it in, it sounded EXACTLY like Monte Montgomery, and it’s helping me play better than I ever have before! There’s just something about the pick up system in this thing; it gets more out of me, helps me play more aggressively, play faster, etc.

      @@ChuckEzell I finally got to play it on stage New Year’s Eve, and it sounded phenomenal! But I am so used to using my other guitars with microphones inside as well as ribbon pick ups, that I had to start using my Taylor a lot that night to put down the beat that I’m looping over, etc. I subscribed to your channel when I first contacted you. Hope you’ll take a look at my page and do the same. I do need to get off my lazy butt and start posting more videos, though.

    I have what is likely am '85 also... I bought it new with insurance money from the loss of an Ovation legend and a Carvin DC400 Koa in Ft. Lauderdale when our band's truck was stolen from a gig, likely at the directive of the mobish jersey owners. My Yairi has no electronics or quilting. It too, is still a fantastic guitar and I love it very much. Our drummer's cases were on the truck also and I was forced to pack the drums in cardboard for the next several gigs... I wished misfortune on those a-holes for quite some time and still do if they survived...

      I purchased this used with the pickup already installed but it was done well. I like the end pin jack versus other plugs near the lower bout. Then I run the chance of bumping it against something and cracking the side open.

      Thanks for the comments. This was all about trying something different with the electric to fit my playing style. Getting the controls out of the way. Moving the pickups so I’m not hitting them. In the end it’s still an electric but 1 3/4” at the nut and 16” radius so it’s more like an acoustic in my left hand as well.

      @@TheRange7 I made a Tele-style guitar about 30 years ago, following the instructions in a book by Melvyn Hiscox. It played ok, but looked even more home-made than the one in this video! In the end I re-used the hardware, but the rest went to a car boot sale. I do have one photo somewhere showing me playing it at a gig (pre-digital cameras, so photos were not so ubiquitous). I'll see if I can find that photo.

      @@TheRange7 and in all honesty, I’m surprised the guy left a comment like that. This guitar actually looks gorgeous. I thought it was some high-end guitar at first. By the way, I play full-time for a living, usually 200 shows a year for the past 25 years, and I have 22 guitars. So I may know a thing or two about this.

      Thanks for the comments 👍 - yep just trying something different to fit my playing style. Fender actually did this for a while in the 60s I found out. Check out the Fender Marauder prototype…I found that after I did this but it seems to me others have thought to do this as well. My problem was after playing acoustic for 20 years going back to the electric felt strange and I kept hitting the pickups while playing. So, I just dropped them and covered them.
