URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT : TAMIYA SPRAYS NOW BANNED IN CANADA
After using the orange tube testors for 20+yrs I found myself needing glue & the store only had the Mr.cement S in stock so I grabbed it not knowing it would be an absolute game changer for me. It took me a bit to realize exactly how to use it as it's quite different than what I was used to but it's great stuff & I'm able to be far more precise with it. 🙌🎆
@@pyromaestro Thank you for sharing. It's great that you found a new way to enjoy the hobby.
Agreed, they are all great builds, though I'm partial to tanks without skirts. I haven't built a Panther since the old 1/48 scale Aurora kit from the mid-1960s. Maybe I'll pick one up, the next time that I'm in the capital.
all very nice
Just to add to what the otherntwo gents said, it was a build leaving me with the desire to build another kit by that brand
Hey Bill, no way to judge, they're all super builds, congregations to all. I might just have to give an armour get a go. The shop looked great, would love to get over there some day but you know me, I'd need a small U Haul trailer. Thanks for sharing the club. Cheers Bob
Thanks Bob! I hope you do try an armor build. You know where I’ll be if you need any help.
Just here werkin on my Toy collection with a Hearty Hi in London from Hamilton. Cheers!!!
G'Day! Thanks for watching!
New subscriber. Great topic and channel. Thanks! I'm 58 and started model building 5 years ago. I tried a couple as a kid but at least now it slightly resembles the picture on the box. Greatest hobby, so now I'm The Model Student on RUclips. Yay!
Welcome. I hope we can help inspire you and share what we learn.
Always been a ‘car nut’…started models around 1967 or so…no paint and lots of glue! Very solo, tried to build what I saw on the roads…back when cars changed every September! Started to paint after the first couple and just built for me and my shelf, showing to friends and family that visited…I think the aha for me was magazine articles and the first Autorama I attended that had a model car display! There were other adults out there building models…and started attending Capital Auto Replicas and just kept building for me and trying to improve for me…I still enjoy the process and trying new things. Model on!
Thanks for sharing your story and how you got into the hobby!
When I was about 10, I realized I wanted to make a model of a Case steam traction engine I had seen at a steam threshing show. Of course there were no plastic kits of these in the late 1960's. I thought "hmmm, guess it's gonna be cardboard, wood strip, wire, and Testors paints, working from my Kodak 110 pictures". So I built it and afterward it won a prize at the local fall fair! Well my hobby work went from there. Models drifted away in my 38 year work life, but now that I'm retired after a bad neck injury I have gotten back into it. Doing some nice Tamiya kits as well as some 3D printed models to my own CAD designs. Latest was a 1/12 scale George White traction engine of 1917, scaled from photographs only and designed in pro grade CAD. Good fun. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your story! It's inspiring to see how your passion has continued to evolve through the years.
Hi Bill, great question. I'm sure I built some models as a kid but have no recolection of them now. Back in 2014 I decided I needed a hobby and my neighbour was always talking about his model airplanes and magazines. One day I went with him to the hobby store and bought the Polar Lights Batmobile snap kit. After that I built a paint and glue 1925 Model-T kit and I was hooked. Over the winter of 2014/15 I found people building models on RUclips and it really took off for me. Now I'm retired and have been building regularly and posting them on my RUclips channel since 2015.
It sounds like you found a great hobby and now you're sharing it with the world - great story!
My aha moment was when I actually got an airbrush and realized the possibilities I had. I've been doing this about 1.5 years now.
Airbrushing is a real game changer. Did you get there on your own or were you inspired by work you saw?
@hobcen yeah I just saw some videos and once I got my own it was a real game changer
Hello there. Just wondering if there is any new developments. Thanks
Nothing at this point I am sad to say.
The "ah hah" moment for me was when I entered a kit at the 1991 IPMS Ottawa Model show down in the market. We had moved here the year before and my wife said I should enter my latest model. It was a Matchbox Sdkfz 234 (1/76th) modified with an ESCI (1/72nd) 2 cm turret, mounted on a base with paper cobble stones (sound familiar, Bill?). To my surprise it took an honourable mention. I thought it was cool and apparently the judges thought so too. That pushed me towards taking out-of-the-box kits and making them into something different. Dave
Contests can be a great source of inspiration. Meeting other modelers, sharing ideas, getting compliments on your work, you can even ask for tips from more experienced people. Everybody wins, even if they don't get an award on that particular day.
When I was around 12 years old ,I had two friends that built models (toys) with me with me and we were outside playing with them when a neighbour noticed and she asked if we would like to see her husbands models . So we gladly went over and she opened the door to the room and there were shelves and shelves of 1/72 scale aircraft lining the walls . All painted and decaled up. I also noticed a Monagram Jadgpanzer IV with the zimmerit and the crew figures all painted up. She told us of a ''HOBBY SHOP'' that was in town and the next day we took the bus and discovered what has become a life long passion . Greatest pastime in the world and I can say that almost all my real close friends are people I have met because this hobby.
Thanks for sharing. Goes to show what can happen when we share our passion to bring new people on board.
Hi Bill. I know the exact time that I had my A Ha moment. My sixteenth birthday in 1989. I received an MPC 1970 GTO kit. There happened to be one in the garage at the time ( my Dads first new car ) so I had first hand reference material. The scratchbuilding and modifications the old kit needed were extensive to say the least. At that moment I started researching every kit that I built from then on. Now I enjoy the research as much as the building no matter the subject.
Thanks for sharing. It's great to hear how research and building go hand-in-hand.
I started building in the early 1960s but didn’t have an “a’ha” moment that inspired me to the next level. Rather, it was more of a “ho-hum” moment resulting from my entry in my first model contest. It was a small, local affair sponsored by a local department store, which my father persuaded me to enter. However, rather than being inspired by the other models, I was struck by the monotony. The entry tables were covered by box stock builds of the handful of kits that the store had been promoting. It’s easy to judge the best airplane when you’re looking at about a dozen, monotone red, Fokker triplanes. but it sure is boring from a spectator point of view. That set me on the journey to discovery how to make my models stand-out from the crowd, even if only myself and a few friends would ever see them.
That is such a cool story. thank you for sharing it!
My first model car was a 1964 Buick Wildcat by AMT, my Dad bought it for me when we visited my Uncle in Buffalo NY. We lived in Hamilton at the time. That was it for me, then I found a stash of model cars in the garbage of someone when i wa delivering newspapers one morning and I had to take these cool models and try to rebuild them. Then there was the model magazines at our local store that kept me up to date on builds across the continent.
It’s pretty cool that you found those models in the garbage and brought them back to life! I love that you’ve been following the hobby with those magazines too.
@@hobcen I'm 73 now and still enjoy building cars and planes.
My ‘enlightenment’ moment happened when I stumbled across the September 1972 issue of Car Model magazine. It was peeking out at me from the magazine rack at a local smoke shop where I usually bought comics. The cover story was about how to convert an MPC Baja-Brute into a more extreme off-road desert racer called the Desert Dodge. I found the article fascinating because up until then I built my kits box-stock, and didn’t know about customizing them into anything you wanted. There was also a story inside showing a large collection of photos of winners of an MPC model car building contest. I’d never seen such things. From then on I was hooked.
That is a great story! Sounds like that issue of the magazine really opened up a whole new world of possibilities for you.
@@hobcen I did try to build the Desert Dodge. I saved up my allowance for a few weeks and bought one of the Baja Brute kits at the Simpsons that was near my childhood house in Scarborough. They sold plastic model kits in the toy department, and had a rack of Testers enamel paints, brushes, and glue. Also, stuffed in that paint rack were a series of pamphlets sold by Revell on the basics of building various types of plastic model kits. During some other visit I bought the one called “How to Build Better Car Models”. I read that thing many, many times. It turned out the build was too hard for me, and I didn’t have access to the specialized tools and materials the project called for, but I was happy enough with the result. As time went on that truck was converted to other customs and cannibalized for parts. I got a lot of use out of that kit 🙂
I built models as a kid. I loved building them. I painted some, not all. I stopped when I was about 14. I made one attempt at a model back 20 years ago but never completed it. Then, I was prepping for retirement and got the crazy idea to pick up the hobby again as something to do. I was going to pick up where I ended but here I am 2 years later, now in retirement, and I am a building machine. Social media and RUclips got me trying new things and has hyped me to no end. I started airbrushing very gingerly, started with a cheap brush, went to a Iwata Neo and just started using a Creos PS-270. I am getting quite comfortable. I now have a stash of 20 models and have built 15 ranging from armor to aircraft to cars and ships. It frustrates me and brings me great joy. I am really enjoying the hobby. I try to build well, my rough part is painting and colors. I do what I can, some turn out great others not so great. One thing is for sure, they are mine.
Thanks for sharing your story and the journey back into the hobby. My takeaway is "it brings me great joy".
My entrance in the hobby was in ‘59-‘60 some ships and planes but most of all Custom Cars. My neighbour belonged to a Hot Rod club here in Toronto and seeing what he was doing with Real 1:1 automobiles hooked me in. On average AMT 3 in 1 were about $4-$6 bucks and I had to cut a few lawns to buy a kit. Thing is I was so interested in the neighbours customs that I wanted to replicate what he was doing, (a 1929 Model ‘A’ pickup Hot Rod) that I started building without the instruction, doing it my way! I still building but “What If” cars and diorama’s competitively! As you mentioned, I was also influenced by Pane and Verlinden for my dioramas.
Interesting how real-life customs inspired your early modelling career. Thanks for sharing your story.
I built kits with my friends as a kid (early '70s) Not sure how it started. It seemed everyone was building models in those days. I would often get kits for Xmas and birthdays. I build mostly cars and a few airplanes. I recall being attracted to car kits with metal axles so that they would roll and you could play with them. I transitioned into armour models about the age of 12 and built a lot of the old Tamiya and Italeri kits. Interestingly, my initial reason for changing from cars to armour was not a love of armour or a disdain for cars, but simply that I could brush paint the armour models with flat Testors paint and it looked decent. Brush painted cars looked like crap. Like Bill, I had never heard of an airbrush as that point. At 15 I got my first car (and discovered girls) and models were forgotten about. Fast forward to 1983 for my "Ah ha" moment. I was working as an ambulance attendant (EMT) in little towns along the Seaway Valley. 24 hour shifts and often not much to do except watch TV. I recall that one day we had to go to the local Home Hardware to get a replacement element for the stove in the ambulance base. At the store I came across the Tamiya Panther A kit. Thinking that this would help me pass the time, I bought it along with some glue and some Testors paint. I built the kit, enjoyed it, and it was the start of many models I built on the kitchen tables in various ambulance bases. This got me back into building models as my "full time" hobby. Something I still enjoy 42 years later.
That's a great story, thanks for sharing. You got your "ah ha" moment later in life and came back to the hobby you had fun with as a kid. I suspect that there are more than a few like that out there.
100% Shep Paine booklet in the Monogram British Grant kit. Had to be circa 1973. Then I later bought his How to build Diorama book published by Kalabash.
Thanks for sharing. The hobby needs something like this today. I had that book too. By then I was already hooked and that made my "addiction" worse. LOL
For me I built everything out of the box no paint etc till in the mid 60's I stopped into a store and saw a copies of Model Car Science and Car Model Magazine and read those issues front to back over and over again (still have those issues and many more). Seeing the amazing things being made, made me want to try to improve my models. My model building led to my love of real cars and a career in the automotive field which in turn made me want to detail a model correctly. I thank this hobby for a lot of the friends I've made in the past and present.
Thanks for sharing Ed. Like me, your "ah-ha" moment turned into a career.
The problem is what is real to someone could be something different to someone else and as a result there are too many perfectionist snobs in the hobby who openly criticise others that are not up to their standard and tell them they shouldn't be in the hobby while conviently forgetting that they too were once a novice who didn't know 1 end of a paint brush from the other..... and yes,i HAVE been on the receiving end of it when i was a member of I.P.M.S. Ireland
But what sparked you? What got you to participate at a higher level?
@hobcen i just build models for myself....i now use aresol cans instead of brush painting but i still brush paint smal parts such as cockpit interiors, undercarrage, canopy frames etc but if im happy with the end result isn't that all that matters?
Yes it is. I always say if you 're not having fun with your hobby, why would you even do it?
@hobcen and thats my piont....it's supposed to be fun...not a chore to impress others.
Hi Bill, the movie Battle of Britain at the Elgin theatre, there were scale model kits on display. That was the moment I got hooked.

Hey Bill, what a great video, watching I felt like I was building with my brothers The chap in blue is wearing my Google's. I do like Das Werk as well. What a great idea. I'm also preparing a spot for my new Hobby Centre purchases which are flying their way to WA. Very anxious to o follow this group challenge along. Cheers Bob.
Thanks Bob, it's a good bunch and I wanted to get that across. I can't wait to see how they turn out as well.
Lol. Damn Bill. Now I will have to get one of these kits to match my R/C version. Glad to have met the guys in the modelling club on an earlier visit. I have a 1/35 Leopard 2A6 and a KV 1 requiring assembly. Not to mention modifications to my R/C tanks. Sigh, so man projects ahead. Thanks for getting so many parts for my tanks and for the great advice about modelling.
It's an excellent kit for any level of modeller. First batch sold out but more are en route. If you have time, you can be one of the Thursday builders!
Thank you.
To say that model ship coloration is controversial is an understatement. My interpretation of Western Approaches light green and light blue is similar to the darker colors that I see on at least one of the models displayed. I had a relatively heated discussion with Mr. James Duff who is/was the head of Sovereign Hobbies and who has done a tremendous amount of research. My argument as to my paint choices have to do with matching my color shades to actual B&W photos of the ships I am modeling. No one seems to agree on shades of colors for the Royal Navy (which matches the Royal Canadian Navy in most respects from my understanding.), but for most of the WWII colors, the formulas are available in the Admiralty orders. I am in agreement with you regarding no boot topping stripe on camouflaged ships and grey antifouling on capital ships and all black or all red on smaller vessels. Anyway, very interesting presentation.
Thank you for your detailed commentary on this very complicated subject.
all depends whats the quality after dried... if its fragile or spread after as cheap markers .. thats no use :(
Great points, I will go back to some of the things I painted with them and check on the finish. Thanks for the tip. I'm trying the black. I painted it on bare plastic. It does not rub off with my fingers. I masked it with scotch tape and it did not lift. Keep in mind this was painted at the time I produced that video, so it has had a long cure but this stuff is permanent.
Respectively!!, I really do not aggree with alot of those prices. Again with all due respect. Yes some are vintage. I have found alot of those kits at model shows for much less. Need to wheel and deal. The vendors do not want to take home what they want to get rid of. I brought 9 kits for 85.00 dollars last show i went to. Again with respect. Wheel and deal. Hard cash talks waved in front of a vendor.
You can always shop for deals, especially at shows. I base my offers to customers on what I can resell for, aka what the markets show. I use the sold listings on eBay. That is an indicator of what the market is like for them. It is fair for both parties. Also one can balance these prices with what kits are costing currently, still a good value in most cases.
I only paid $5.00 for the MONOGRAM 1/48 Zero at the Toy Fair…. Still love the BBB box with the BOXART !!!!
I remember those days too. My first kit that I bought by myself around age 8 was a Monogram 1/48 Spitfire. Mine was the white box with the model photo on top. If I remember my history correctly....US Model companies were made to have photos of the actual built models on their box tops so as to not "mislead" consumers with promises of a very detailed, awesome looking replica not realizing that it could be accomplished but it took patience, skills and a learning curve to do just that. Glad that is over!

The very old designs are from the late 1940’s and early 1950’s that were first in Collier’s magazine and then on Walt Disney’s Tomorrow Land TV series. Videos are on RUclips and Disney streaming. These were early designs by von Braun and his NACA/NASA team. Note similarities to the Soviet’s N1 moon rocket and the 33 engines of Star Ship! Original design used LOX and alcohol Great minds….!
That is some really interesting history and connections you have made, thanks for sharing.
