This is what all police sirens should sound like........
so that rattling you posted about ended up being the start of spun bearings?
Yep most likely. My bearings didn’t spin but if I kept driving on them like this they probably would have.
Could you make this work on a na Miata aswell
Not on an NA6 if you retain the AFM but it could probably work on an NA8.
how does It sound when you are driving though?
Sounds great at WOT and driving around town but it’s very droney anytime you’re cruising.
i’m having a similar problem at 3000 rpms did you find a solution?
Never found a solution and I got rod knock at a track day and I think these noises were the beginning stages of rod knock.
@@FDB77 i was also thinking that , thanks !
Wow same, but only from 2.5-3k rpms, and never at full throttle, I can only (barely) hear it at around < 25% throttle
@@MaybeKian I have this identical problem. What is the first thing I should do???
@@josephharrisonbubel736 check valve lash clearence (easy DIY with youtube "TheCarPassionChannel" made a good video on it), adjust it and if the ticking went away, you're in luck. If it didnt, you're sitting on a time bomb and need to check the rod bearings ASAP.
Tutorial?
Did you still use the same crank after doing the rod bearings?
I ended up putting a different engine in since I found some pretty bad scoring in cylinder 1 so this engine is sitting on the side for a forged 1.9L build someday.
Hows the drone? Looking for something that doesnt drone but sounds good up high in the revs
If you want something that doesn’t drone this exhaust is NOT it. It’s hard to have conversations while cruising lol. I’d recommend a RoadsterSport if you want no drone and good sound.
I actually have this same exhaust and was worried about excess drone too so I welded another ultra quiet resonator in the exhaust and it reduced the drone enough but it is till there going highway speeds.
does it pass smog with the intake?
No I swap it back to stock for smog
How’s the drone?
Not pleasant with the silencer out. You’ll really feel it the first few minutes but I’m used to it now.
that was.... underwhelming
What model year is this?
2002
@@FDB77 Thank you! Was it a difficult install btw? I've heard it differs between the mk2 and mk2.5
@@axelolsson7591 very easy and it’s the same on NB1 and NB2. Took me about 10 minutes.
is it legal without the silencer
In CA no it’s too loud but I haven’t been bothered for it yet.
Can I just ask, was this done on 1st gear and dump clutch? Or secord gear? Im really curious, thanks in advance!
I believe it was 2nd gear, no clutch dump. Just turn and gas. I have a Torsen LSD now tho and it’s soooo much better 😂
Good lord😭😭
great video and you being active on the comments solved a lot of questions for me. thanks!
You’re welcome!
Got this same issue what was the solution?
Haven’t fixed it yet gonna pull the motor soon and hopefully it just needs some new rod bearings.
It may be Cyl.4 After doing extensive research nb’s are notorious for oil starvation which leads to 4 being deprived then BOOM MONEY PIT
@@toyslowwyavlogs3275 could be but I did the rod bearing test where you push down on each piston after rotating it slightly past TDC and I got a click from cylinder 1 so I’m suspecting that one is bad. I won’t know till I tear it apart tho.
@@FDB77keep me updated please
@@toyslowwyavlogs3275 Rod bearings 1 through 3 are F'd. 4 seems ok. I posted a video showing the bearings if you wanna check it out. Crank bearings are also messed up along with the corresponding journals on the crank.
Sounds like knock knock jokes
i have this exact noise on my 99 nb. any update? it seems to be like valve lash way out of spec
Did you have to get rid of the rear frame brace?
Do you mean the one under the diff? No it’s still there. The axle back doesn’t even go there.
@@FDB77 ok thx
@@FDB77 do you know If its go to fit on a 1992 miata with the brace.
@@miata7478 it’s for NB’s not NA’s so no it won’t fit.
Rotella T6 5w-40 did the trick for me
Anyone know if this Would this fit an automatic? I heard that the flange at the mid pipe is different between the manual transmission and the automatic
I just looked it up for you and no unfortunately it doesn’t seem like it would work in an auto.
i have an 02 as well ! i plan on buying this soon , are there any other mods that suit this particular year that yk of ?
Coilovers and good tires are a must!
@@FDB77 i actually just installed coilovers & my tires are fine !
@@nataliesauls1773 well the only logical step after that is a turbo right?😉
Did you ever figure out what was wrong?
Nope just kept on sending it but a week ago the exhaust cam spit a shim and annihilated the head lol
@@FDB77 ah shoot so it seems like you may have had bad lash
@@ZareefHuq yup that’s what I suspected. Keeping valve lash in spec is very important. Ignore it like me and stuff like this happens.
Any update?
I’ve still been beating on it ever since and the rods are still in the block so I think it’s ok haha. The noise hasn’t gotten worse. But I’m replacing the clutch right now and found that the pilot bearing had some play in it and the springs on the clutch disc were slightly loose and shaky, so I’m hoping that those could be it. I won’t know till I put the car back together tho.
Any update following this?
@@crabstyleskrrt still makes the noise. Clutch wasn’t the issue. The head broke about a month ago and I rebuilt it and while I was in there I did the rod bearing test and it seems like 3 rod bearings are unhappy. Still beating on it tho and the bottom end hasn’t blown up yet. I’m 95% sure it’s rod bearings.
Thanks for the video.purchased after watching your video.
Video doesn't do justice. Just installed it happy as can be! Had to put silencer back to quiet it down a bit
Does anyone know if this exhaust fits with x force headers ?
As long as the midpipe ends up at the stock location it’ll work.
where did you get that braket to hold the intake?
Found it in my toolbox of random metal lol but it’s basically just a piece of flat bar bent and drilled to support the intake.
Silencer or no?
In this video I had it in but I’ve been running without it ever since.
Are the holes from the silencer noticeable?
They’re there but I haven’t really noticed them at all.
having this same noise, should i be worried? i do "beat" on the car from time to time haha
I’ve been continuously beating the crap out of my car since I got it and even after this noise started and it hasn’t really gotten worse. I’ve just accepted at this point that it’s probably some bearing in the bottom end but it hasn’t let go yet. I’m taking this thing to the track this coming weekend though and we’ll see if it makes it through! 😂🤞
For anyone wondering I have this exhaust myself. 100% worth the 200 dollars.
update?
Changed the oil from 10W-30 to 10W-40 and have still been beating on it since then. The noise seems to have quieted down a bit with the thicker oil and at this point I’m just ignoring it. Nothing bad has happened yet.🤞
Are you running the stock midpipe or an aftermarket midpipe? I recently bought a megan racing exhaust and noticed that the phalange of the exhaust was bigger.
Stock midpipe. Mine fit up perfectly.
Why you don’t want VVT
Fits perfect and sounds great with or without the silencer if anyone is still wondering. It was also noticeably lighter than my old exhaust and it is very well made (welds, finishing, packaging etc). Looks like it would be much more than $200 IMO. No rattles, no leaks, gasket provided worked just fine. I am more than pleased with my purchase and still don't think there is a better, more affordable exhaust out there. Especially with the silencer removal giving you two different sound options. I'd suggest getting 3 new exhaust hanger bushings (under 20 bucks from auto parts store) to make life easier.
not gonna lie, it sounded like a lawnmower when accelerating but it got better when it sped up.
Yeah this is with the silencer in. Once I removed it it definitely improved the sound and made it not sound like a lawnmower anymore lol.
is this a 1.6?
Nope, 1.8 VVT
Does it backfire/ burble more without the silencer? I have a nb1 with the same Megan exhaust; had it about 3 months and love it. Too lazy to remove the silencer to see what its like but wouldn't mind some more pops and burbles... Thanks for the vid, not many out there of this exhaust; It's what got me to pull the trigger on buying it a while back.
I’ve been running it without the silencer for about 5 months now and I love it even more than before. It actually does pop and burble now. At first the sound seemed to be way too much and I could feel it in my chest but I’ve just gotten used to it at this point. I would remove it and see how you like it. Also every time you very lightly blip the gas when coasting, you’ll get a lot of pops and burbles from it. Does your NB1 have the precat? If it does it might not pop as much.
@@FDB77Thanks a bunch man! I was actually doing an oil change earlier and thought about removing it. Came back to the vid to listen and thought I'd ask first. I have the stock headers, with an aftermarket mid pipe/ cat, and Megan axle-back. I'll have to check to see if the pre cat is there as the previous owner had the mid pipe installed but left the stock headers and muffler. Or removed them before selling* Not sure. I was actually quite surprised at the amount of pop and burbles I was getting so there is a possibility it was removed. I'll check when I remove the silencer and maybe I'm in for a treat of even more good sounds. Thank you for the insight
@@jrh1704 you’ll be able to see if you have a precat by looking under the hood. It’s located on the manifold before the exhaust goes underneath the car. You’ll see a big metal canister if your car has it.
@@FDB77 I have the pre cat, and I took the silencer off today. It sounds really good but does get a bit droney at highway speeds. I've got the 4:30 rear so 65 highway I'm at about 4k. I'm going to leave it out for the week and try it out. I'm even thinking about tinkering with the silencer to find an in between lol. I'll prolly butcher it
@@jrh1704 haha yeah it’s pretty dang drony without it. I’ve also got a 4.3 rear end with a 5 speed so I feel you on that highway cruise rpm lol. I’ve just gotten used to it now and it’s worth leaving it out to me. Let me know how you like it after a few weeks!
Parking lot off salmon falls? Sure looks like it! Haha
Sure is! (No I’m just kidding it’s definitely Mexico 👀)
@@FDB77 haha a local! I live just by salmon falls. I just pulled out my 4.3 Torsen to put in a 3.9 with my FFS kit if you’re interested ;)
@@Onthepontoon ooh how much?
@@FDB77 was hoping for $700 to get back what I paid for the 3.9, but I’d take $650.

The car or the exhaust?
@@FDB77 sorry the exhaust xD
@@emjayyy0 It’s just called a Megan Racing axle back exhaust. I got mine from eBay.
How was the install on Megan exhaust?
Super easy. It fit up perfectly.
Had a familiar sound coming from my 2000 Miata just last month, turns out it was a warped timing cover rubbing up against the timing chain that made a ticking sound hopefully it's that simple for you
Oh I sure hope its that simple. I'm going to check valve lash when I have time and I'll inspect all the timing related components to check for any noises.
Did you get rid of the stock shock brace or did your 2002 not come with one?
It’s a base model so it never came with one.
@@FDB77 any chance this set up would work with a shock tower brace?
@@heckenka it could with a bit of tweaking but my setup personally won’t fit.
@@FDB77 ok thanks
Go in circle and drop the clutch.
Is this with stock intake?
No this is with a diy intake

They sure are!
What year is your miata? I got a borla muffler on my miata. This muffler sounds good!
It’s an ‘02!

Hi, where did you find that 180 degree pipe? Been looking for that.
I got it from Amazon. I have the link in the description.
