Budget Guitar #16: BC Rich Warlock IT Edition

This is a quick look at a limited run Warlock from BC Rich that uses their short-lived Invisibolt system. Undeniably cool, and brutal as hell. Let me know what mods you'd do to this, or let me know if you've ever owned one.

A rare beauty from around 2008, this guitar ticks all my boxes for a superstrat. I got a second chance to buy it from a guitar show, and Ben from @CrimsonCustomGuitars was standing next to it at the time, so it seemed like a good omen. A bloody good purchase for £160, so if you find one I'd recommend snapping it up. Apologies for the awful sound, I was trying a new microphone that decided to ke...

A quick review and demo of the lastest Gio offering from Ibanez that caught my eye. Available in blue metal chameleon finish as shown here, and also in black night, which is a more subtle sparkle finish. Ibanez have nailed it again without having to remortgage your house or get a loan, and the quality control is spot on as ever. Highly recommended if you play a wide variety of genres and also w...

A quick review and demo of a fantastic affordable offering from Fender. There's a few variations of these between pickup options, colours and fretboard finishes, but they're all high quality instruments that give you a fantastic guitar for not too much money. I Built A Brand New Guitar for £160
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
I've built a lot of guitars in the past using donor bodies and second hand parts, but I wanted to see how much it would cost to build a guitar entirely out of brand new parts using nothing but Amazon and eBay. As an added bonus, I've created something that I absolutely love playing with a decent spec for the same cost as a Squier Bullet while being exactly what I wanted it to be visually. Links...

A while back I posted a quick review about the Squier Bullet Mustang and explained that I wanted to make some interesting mods. I've now created the most tortured sounding guitar I've ever heard, but it's ridiculously fun to play. The fuzz unit is no longer available, but just smash open any small fuzz pedal and cut chunks of wood out under the scratchplate for the same effect.

I got one last week (Dec 2024), only £77 for the Ash burl classic series tele, bloody amazing guitar very well double boxed (inner box packing was shaped to protect the body) very impressive. The intonation was spot on straight from the box! Only £11 more than the cost 4 years ago 😲 that is also impressive. The only downside .......... erm .......... well ....... the fretboard is dry and needs oiling, yeh I know it is a bit of a reach! 😆 What no hardcase! 🤣😂🤣
Glad you’re happy with it! I’m planning on getting another Fazley at some point, but I still need to do some mods on this one, just not sure what to do to it.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 I get that, that was my plan too, but now I have it I am not so sure, yes people say change the pickups, but run it through a graphic EQ and there is no need. Might just change the pickguard for a stained wooden one and that's about it.
Just a glance at the website's listing told me everything I had to know about these. I'm all for cheap guitars but sometimes paying more definitely gives you more. The best thing you can do is buy used, imo.
Agreed. This is the worst guitar I’ve ever held in my hands, and I used to own a CB Sky guitar.
Strip it down and start a new project bro. It’s a cool shape.
That was the intention but the paint finish on the styrofoam body was so thin that it wouldn’t have lasted long enough to be worth owning.
Can i buy yours because i like the damage youra has on the headstock
I sent it straight back the next day because the neck was warped.
@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 oh
I’m gonna get a Harlem x guitar for Christmas, remind me to come back on Christmas and I’ll tell you how it is
Hopefully you’ll be one of the lucky ones.
Mad yokes and a ton of fun. Far better than the player strats because they’re hardtail, smaller and cheaper. I bought the Lead 3 Sienna burst and the Lead 2 green. I’d love the complete set of 6 they brought out! The crimson Lead 2 is awesome looking but I don’t like Pau Ferro. Your one sounds like a heavy metal axe. Huge sound for single coils.
I was also surprised by the sound, it just goes to show you can get decent heavy tones from single coils. I did like the green but felt the black was a little classier for the mood I was in at the time.
Your model is an Aria YS-300. Aria Pro II YS 300 looks totally different and has different electronics.
I recorded this video about 8 years ago and there was very limited information I could find on it at the time. I was trying to piece it together from low resolution catalogue images from Matsumoku websites so I apologise for the oversight.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 No need, even today there is surprisingly low amount of information about these Matsumoku models.
Great review Tim always wondered about their products can you please tell me what you think or have you tried the LA Select Modern Electric Guitar the one with the Floyd, now I am not expecting much at the price but would love your opinion
Cheers bud! I haven’t tried that exact model, but the Select series do tend to be a lot better. You’ll get a general idea of the quality from my review of the G4M Knoxville Select, which I love. I did do some modifications but they weren’t that necessary as it was pretty good to begin with.
I've got nothing but good things to say about all the G4M guitars and basses that I've had. Honestly...I've hardly had a single thing to do to them, they play and sound good too. I've had...two 12 string Teles, about 5 acoustics, about 6 basses, and I currently have a spalted maple New Jersey Select...which is an absolute BEAST! 😊
I’m glad they’ve worked out for you. My experiences have been quite hit and miss, but I’m happy with my Knoxville Select.
What about subzero bass VI/baritone(s)? Not worth 200 Ł? better get HB or Aria?
In most cases I’d recommend HB or Aria before Sub Zero.
When the volume pots are up for coilsplitting, it overrides the function of the tone pots voice switching. There's only 3 modes for each pickup. The middle switch position is where the LP version of the Prophecy has some extra voicing options. My calculations are 11 voicings on the others, and 14 with the LP. Peace!
Cheers for the info. I was wondering why it didn’t sound much different to my ears. Then again I usually just slam through distortion so most tone options are superfluous to me.
im thinking of buying one as a mod project to put emgs and an ibanez edge into
You may need to make alterations to the cavity for the Edge trem, but as long as the neck is straight it will be a good project. Let me know how it goes!

Hello, I ordered this guitar but for a left-handed person, I hope it will arrive in good condition.
I hope so too. Good luck!
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 thanks. It will arrive around July 8-9. I will let you know in what condition it arrived.
@dactylic_index2664 always remember that if it’s not perfect you can get a refund, don’t put up with crap.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 It will be my second guitar. My first was a stratocaster encore. I wanted to try something new and I'm still such a beginner.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 please i dont understand how to tune it there IS like double tuning or something? Cuz i broke one string already
I've got the knoxville you have and the back is satin almost like they forgot to gloss it. Took a lot of work to make it playable and it's reasonable. If you don't have setup skills then stay away for sure. Great looking guitars, terrible QC.
Seems to be a little hit and miss from case to case. There’s definitely a lack of consistency, so it’s good they have a decent returns policy. But if you like to mod or tinker, they’re pretty canvases to start with.
Been looking for this guitar for a while now, no luck :(
They do seem quite rare. Keep trying though, it's worth it.

getting a Harlem S seven string from them but I just hope that it is ending up being fine
If it’s terrible just send it back for a refund. Don’t pay for a bad guitar.
yea but if there is some slight flaws I would be fine with it since it will be my first electric guitar. And well I have never played an electric before but yet here I'm with an order of a Harlem S seven string that is purple and looks pretty cool. But is their amps any good? But I would ask for a refund if it is really bad.
@@erikjonsson1519 the Sub Zero cabs are alright, but never tried their amps. 7 strings for your first electric guitar is brave, I salute your decision.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 yea later on I read and heard even more that those were alright. But I gotta learn seven string one day and since I probably will play seven strings when playing electric why not play one from the get go. But let's just hope that the amp will be alright and that the guitar will be alright as well because I wanna learn it and it was pretty cheap but still I want it in a good quality or as good as it gets by them since I have already ordered and it will come in September.
Hartwood is such an underated brand
That’s certainly been my impression of them so far. They’re definitely nudging towards the Harley Benton league.
What was the intro track please?
It’s a segment of a track by one of my bands, General Waste.
I have an original Fender Lead l, wine red maple fretboard 1981 Set Lover Humbucker pickup. This is one of my favorite guitars and I have two Stratocaster, two Gibson SG but this guitar is a dream to play and the sound is awesome 😎 really High output 13 k
Sounds beautiful, man.
I usually play 10's on my other guitars but find 11's work extremely well on my prophecy For me the slightly shorter scale length makes lighter strings a bit too floppy and buzzy especially when i drop tune.
I’ve just always been used to the slinkier feel of my standard 10-46 strings on a Les Paul, it’s just the way I got used to those shapes feeling compared to the other scale lengths. I think standard tuning 11s always makes me worry that the headstock is going to snap with the pressure, which I know is absurd. I’ve never had a string snap while restringing but I still look away and flinch every time I tune up a fresh set. The human mind is a cruel joke.
yeah i go with the NYXL 11-50 balanced tension set. Main reason is i like the chonky bass strings for when i want to drop tune without getting floppy. Only time i have had strings snap when re-stringing was when i was trying 8's. fun for bendy playing but easy to break overall loving this guitar. I dont care whatsoever about 'vintage tone' bs. I want modern features and a comfortable shape and this delivers
It is refreshing when the bigger companies take their antique designs and make them innovative. The only Gibson I own is a 2017 HP series LP which has some absolutely nuts features.
Idk if you still reply to comments but i bought one already and im scared of it now as a beginner
Which bit scares you? Do you already have it?
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 well I ordered Harlem x left handed one on Thier site but by your review I'm already scared how it can come to me, condition and how will it sound (it should be here tomorrow or after tomorrow)
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322i ordered it from Thier site but it should come tomorrow or after tomorrow, and I'm scared after your review, because of the condition it may come in and how would it sound and if it would be playable at all
Well they have a very good returns policy, so run through some checks when it arrives: the neck should be pretty much dead straight as you look down it from one end, the electronics should work in all positions, there should be no damage at all and when pressing on each fret on each string the note shouldn’t be “choked out”. Bend the strings and if they feel gritty then you may need to polish the frets. If this is your first guitar you may have a bit of a learning curve coming as Floyd Rose style bridges can be a little intimidating at first, and the set up will take some time and patience if it requires it. If you’ve already started learning before getting it then you’ll at least know how a guitar should play, so my advice is if anything doesn’t seem right or it’s disappointing then get in touch with their returns department and ask for a refund. They pretty much expect to refund these guitars so they won’t contest it. If you need any more help just let me know and I’ll advise as much as I can.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 well yeah sure this guitar that arrived is in pretty good condition at least it seems to be, but if you would want me to send you some pics about it or something so you could help find out some issues if there are any then we may contact by using any social media like Instagram if you got one etc
I got a Gear4Music Ovation style 12 string acoustic for £99 which is an absolute belter for that sort of money. I suppose in amongst all the swine you can find a few pearls!
Absolutely, it’s just a roulette. It should be relatively difficult to screw up wood and wires these days with the cost of CNC routing being fairly cheap, so I’m still surprised when a shit one gets released into the wild.
I’m interested in how you accurately cut the pup cutout.
First thing I did was put the scratchplate on the body to find the alignment and desired distance from the bridge (I’m pretty good at eyeballing where it will fit in the cavity) and then I traced a humbucker ring for the correct size and shape. From there I stitch-drilled the majority of the material out and simply went to town with a flat rasp file. Once I got up to the line I had traced from the pickup ring I went slower to keep everything straight and kept checking if the pickup would fit. Once it slipped in without catching I was done. The trick is patience. Hope that helps.
I own 7 RGs, an SR405EQM 5 string bass, and just picked up a Gio RG for my neice. They're great guitars, and super fun to customize! All of my RGs are modded in some way or another, new pickups (I've recently gotten into different colored pickups, I have black, white, cream and black zebra, pink, red, blue...), different knobs, switch tips, etc. 2 are Frankensteins, one I'm still in the process of building
They are lovely guitars. As I mentioned in the video, I really love the sharp angles on the body edges, there’s just something premium feeling about them.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 I agree.
very enjoyable review. keep em coming.
Thanks for the feedback, there are more on the way!
Is that older version?
No, this is the 2023 model.
Why isn’t your neck in full blue??
I guess Ibanez chose to put the roasted maple on show. 🤷🏻♂️
Hello Tim, I was wondering if your saddle screws are sticking up past the saddles on your Ibanez GRG121SP? Thank you!🙏
Not noticeably, but I’m used to some pretty tall saddle screws on certain guitars. These are fairly short to begin with, and depending on how low you can get your action you shouldn’t really have a problem with them protruding.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 Thanks Tim!! 👍🙏
Please shut up and play it
Thank You for the video. Was always tempted to purchase a lead 2 but had my doubts… now I’m looking at the guitar in a different way … I want one !!!
Glad I could be of service.
Earlier I was looking for a cool guitar and found the Harlem x but u said it’s shite so any advice on a decent good edgy looking guitar for cheap enough?
Depends how cheap and edgy you want it. There’s loads of second hand pointy things around (such as the Cruiser RG600 in one of my older videos) or even some of the lower end BC Rich models, but they’re a little hit and miss in terms of how good they are. There isn’t very much in the budget market for currently-available pointies, but maybe have a look at the heavy section of Harley Bentons on the Thomann website.
Well it looks great. But what does it sound like?
It sounded a bit muddy to be honest, so I put an EMG in it after I posted the video. Now it sounds like every guitar with an EMG 👍🏻
Got a PRS CE 24 from G4M online. Packaging was a bit light but the guitar arrived undamaged, despite them shipping it with the trem bar installed.
That was lucky. They seem to generally make more effort with higher end guitar packaging, but not so much with their own.
Are they legit? I wanna order a Takamine EF381SC 12 String Electro Acoustic, Black
Would they so carelessly pack a PRS Core model?
Unlikely.
Doing all this and not playing some chug at the end to test it is sacrilege 😢
This was just an exercise in aesthetics. It’ll make another appearance in a future video.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 just kidding bro, great job 🔥
I've had a B/W/B Scorpio for about 13 years and I've never really felt like I needed something better, got it for £160 also if I remember correctly. Playing/video quality's not the best but there's some old videos on my channel if you wanna take a look.
That’s a nice looking guitar man. Looks completely different when you swap the colours round. And at least your playing is better than mine!
Why didn’t you play it??
This was more of an aesthetics exercise. I was focusing more on making a Strat that I liked the look of. I've since switched the pickup out for an EMG so I'll probably go into that on a video in the future.
Hey... nice honest review. If I can warn the people... don't order stuff by them online. They don't pack well. I received a damaged guitar of 700 euros... hollowbody... I could see inside if the guitar through the cracks... they proposed me a 50 euro refund😢
I’ve experienced about 75% success with their deliveries, after my G4M Harlem X review I realised that if you order something extra like a strap or something they will put the guitar box inside another box. The packing leaves a lot to be desired still, but an extra box helps. Courier services don’t handle things with any care and G4M should anticipate that. Fortunately they will refund and replace damaged goods, my advice is to always film yourself opening valuable items as proof if needed.
Thank you for the info
@@gwoodtones no problem, thanks for watching!
Are they legit I wanna order a Takamine EF381SC 12 String Electro Acoustic, Black
You could try.. but as you can read above here.. they really don't pack well so the chance you receive a broken guitar is high. But they refund... or send a new if still in stock. But order an extra strap or something... then they put it in a second box around... so more protection...
I run a page on FB .....the originals made in the the 80-83 were always real heavy these reissues are made of Poplar I think and are much lighter !!!! which makes them fun to play !!!!
Never had an opportunity to play an original so I didn’t know they used to be heavier. Thanks for the info!
Great review, it's on my list of guitars to potentially buy. Please can you let me know, did you find the neck to be chunky? I'm looking for as fat a neck on a guitar as I can get. It's tough... but a lot of the G4M guitars seem to have fatter necks than most. Any other suggestions of fat neck guitars super welcome. I've been looking for a very long time! Thanks 🎸
It’s not overly fat but it’s far from a shredder neck. It’s not as fat as the 2020 Epiphone LP Junior, which has one of the chunkiest necks I’ve seen.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 much appreciated!
I got it I’m sending it back guitar strings are rattling but if the person in the video got it for €80 then fresh but I paid €190 for it so for 80 more I could get a Yamaha guitar which is what I did
Fair enough. I would’ve been more cautious if I didn’t get a discount on it, but perhaps see if a setup will sort the rattle before you send it back.
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 already in the process of sending it back I’m a complete noob first time playing guitar I’d have no idea what to do and if I done something wrong and broke it then they wouldn’t give me a refund I bought the Yamaha 112 instead it was €250
it's shaped like a les paul.....but it's definitely not a les paul.
If it was a regular Les Paul I wouldn’t have been interested.
It says Les Paul on the website
its a les paul because its a les paul
Any update on this. I got one of these at the beginning of summer, the pickups took me a while to get used to, how’s it holding up for you months later and what if any mods have you done ?
I’ve not made any mods yet, I haven’t had to. It’s been pretty much perfect out of the box, except for changing the strings to my usual gauge.
I have the exact same exact guitar, and would never sell it - as it simply looks, sounds, and plays, so good.
I sold my surf green duo-sonic and just bought a player mustang which I don't like at all :( wish I'd bought one of these instead.
I was eyeing up a Player Mustang the other day, what don’t you like about it?
@@timthebudgetguitarguy8322 mostly the fretboard if I'm honest, the pau ferro on the duo-sonic felt perfect for me, easy to play, quite flat and felt natural. The Mustang fretboard obviously being maple feels too glossy and sticky of that makes sense. Guitars obviously are very personal and some ways the duo-sonic and Mustang are similar but the fretboard would 100% put me off buying another. I'll be swapping it in the next few weeks.
That makes sense. I personally like lacquered maple pretboards but I’m not so keen on unfinished maple, yet I’ll happily play rosewood.

Good video mate. I've made a few small changes on mines. To the pickups, I liked the neck pickup on its own, but hated the stock bridge (for the same reason i hate near all strat bridge tones), so I replaced them with a SuperDistortion S in the bridge and a Chopper in the neck, shielded the hell out of the inside, and converted the phase switch to a killswitch. Tuned it to C std and sometimes drop A#... This thing is a stoner/doom/sludge monster now. But similar story to yours; I hought it looked a bit goofy until I actually played it, then l fell in love with it. The smaller body is amazingly comfy, the whole instrument is so light and well balanced, AND has an amazing feeling neck... Simultanously the cheapest and best feeling player series model that fender has.
I’d love to be in a stoner/sludge/doom band, that’s kind of what I was aiming for with my Mustang video. I’d probably never switch the pickups out on this one, but if I ended up with another I’d maybe use something from the old cheap Teisco type guitars. Great for fuzz and noise. Thanks for sharing your experience, and thanks for watching!
I like it but tunomatic on an S type is not my preference.
Same here, but it’s nice to have less bridge on this one. I think a standard bridge plate would ruin the minimalism.
