TLC | My Cup Carving Axe - Satisfying Sharpening With The Tormek T-8 and AX-40 Jig
Welcome to the first of a playlist series called TLC - Tool Loving Care!
With these videos, I aim to provide an insight into my tools, why I like them, why I have them, any stories they can tell and also to give them a little bit of love with either a sharpen or some much needed repairs or even re-handling or sheathing. I have been wanting to make these loose style videos for a while, but I have never had the space to really make way for it. I now have set up a sharpening studio that I hope will transform as these videos roll out.
I often find myself putting off sharpening. Let’s face it, making things sharp can be dull. I won’t lie to you, my @TormekSharpening T-8 has been a saviour in my...

Calm Carving | A Winter Solstice Candle Holder - ASMR
Просмотров 7 тыс.12 часов назад
I traditionally make two pieces per year for solstice, in the theme of light. The winter solstice is on Saturday 21st December, marking the shortest day of the year. Much like a mental state, it is good to recognise and be thankful for the dark, for without it, there can be no light. Elm doesn’t come my way very often. I have two remarkable logs from the sustainable tree management of a local h...
Calm Carving | Spalted Walnut Whiskey Cup

I am back with another Calm Carving episode. This time, I cave a drinking cup from some walnut that I sealed in film for the summer months to encourage the salting of the wood (the dramatic colour and patterns caused by fungus). I have carved many of these cups over the years but this one felt really special for some reason. I really enjoyed the oval nature of the hollow and the feel it had in ...
Calm Carving | A Walnut Bowl With Decorative Bird Detail - For My Bird Friend

Description Another lovely day spent making Here I create a small walnut bowl from some ‘Spalted’ walnut. Spalting is what is referred to as the patterns made by the fungal decay of wood. I encouraged this process by wrapping the log in some film towards the end of summer for a few months to ensure the log went a bit funky. Once the wood has been seasoned, it is completely safe. The pattern in ...

A cloudy day well spent. I carry my Silky Super Accel 21 with me whenever I go on walks and here is why. I am back! After a little break from producing longer format media, I visited the workshop to make a walnut serving spoon from a slightly curved piece of European walnut wood. It was slightly tough and wiggly, but I loved the challenge, especially the texture left behind by the removal of the bark. Today, carving felt like meditation. I hope that you can resonate. All tools are listed in the vi...
Tutorial: How I Hollow A Wooden Vessel Using A Twca Cam

Here is a free video explaining in depth how I hollow wood to create specific vessels using a Twca Cam Tool. The Twca Cam is a heritage tool that stems from clog making and spoon carving. I have adapted a technique to efficiently use the tool to remove material and create the undercut convex howl forms that I make. There are many other makers using this tool to create wooden vessels, but I thou...

    Wonderful video. My dad taught me how to sharpen chisels with a hollow ground. This seems to have fallen out of fashion for a number of RUclips woodworkers. I had no idea you could do this for an ax. 69 years old and I still enjoy learning new things. Thanks very much.

    • @samuelalexandershapes
      @samuelalexandershapes 9 часов назад

      I don’t think that there is an edge that’s quite like it, providing the steel quality is good!! With more brittle metals and spring steel, I probably wouldn’t hollow, or at least I’d create a decent flat-over-hollow style. I think that with precise hand sharpening chisel jigs becoming cheaper and widely available, more people are opting for them, but then they eventually get a Tormek anyways to save time… For the axe, it’s completely transformed my approach to carving. I used to teach people how to hand sharpen them, but using this method is just so precise and removes most of the human error that contributes to a rounded, convex bevel. I’m so pleased you could learn something new today. Thank you for watching along and for the compliments.

I haven’t been too fussy and to has served me well! I’d say that I’d I was to make another, id look to find a piece of leather that isn’t too thick, nor too squishy

    Bit of help please if you can, i bought a Beavercraft Adze 50mm, i do not think it's as sharp as it could be ? How would you sharpen it ? Would you concentrate on the inner edge , or the outer edge 🤔 . Cheers Les.

    • @samuelalexandershapes
      @samuelalexandershapes 15 часов назад

      Hey there Les. Great question. So I would clamp it and brush the outer bevel away using an abrasive, attached to some kind of paddle. I’d begin by highlighting the bevel with a marker pen and then clamping in a bench, edge up. Be careful to notify anyone that also uses your space as I have seen this go rather south too. Now, if it is just to sharpen a factory edge, start with a grit of 600 wet and dry paper, pulled tightly and taped at each end of a paddle. Brush the paddle away from the edge, aiming to remove all of the marker pen. Before graduating to another grit on the same bevel, wrap the paper around some dowel and lightly brush from left to right on the inner edge to tackle any burr before replacing the paper with 800, 1000, 1500, 2000. Finally, strop the outer bevel and repeat the dowel method with 2000 on the inner. Hope this helps!

      @lesliecrowther7004 10 часов назад

      @samuelalexandershapes thank you for that 😊 🙏 will give it a go. I also thought that not to far back, on the inside edge it looked a little bit on the thick side ?? About 3/4" back from the blade edge, it seems to sweep out thick quite quickly. If that makes sense. Regarding work area, just me. Yes I've had a few cuts, yes get nagged by the wife, why do you want everything so sharp ??. ( have to be careful 🧐 on blood thinners) Finally, have a great Christmas 🎄 and New Year. Cheers Les.

    • @samuelalexandershapes
      @samuelalexandershapes 4 часа назад

      @@lesliecrowther7004 Yes, adzes tend to be quite aggressive in their taper toward the bevel. It depends how they’re forged and with that steel but they usually are thick, if not for strength then for weight. A light adze is so so in-accurate compared to a heavier one that asks more of important muscle groups. There should be little to no risk of cutting yourself with the adze if you use it with two hands. I put my non-dominant hand under the wrist to provide little room for sideways movement, another anchor point. Like most, I’d say that the hazardous force required to drag or push a dull knife through wood is far more dangerous than an obedient sharp one. But yes, do be careful if on the thinners please! I hope you’re having a wonderful festive holiday Les

    Honestly, I love the ring of your axe very much. It was what appealed to me the most in addition to your immaculate tools, the descriptions you gave of them and your meticulous attention to detail. I also love black smithing which creates a similar ring when they are manufacturing something from iron or steel. Maybe you know of this already, but in Sweden there is a village called Torsång. Even though I might be incorrect, I have always liked to think the name meant Tor's/Thor's song, meaning the sound of his hammar, Mjölnir, which sounded like a song. The church in Torsång is also fascinating because when it was being built the locals demanded that there be a human looking image made to represent Tor out of bricks, which was placed at the top near the roof.

    • @samuelalexandershapes
      @samuelalexandershapes День назад

      Thank you for this comment. There is something really satisfyingly specific about ringing tools. I wasn’t aware about this Swedish place. I haven’t really explored Sweden much. There is a beautifully interwoven wood carving slöjd culture there that I have been lucky enough to experience just a fraction of through meeting the most wonderful and generous of carvers from Sweden. I hope to someday visit for longer and teach there. I am now going to delve into the research of this particular place! I hope to find that their towns bell is actually a hammer on some wrought iron 😂

      @WalburgisLuppus День назад

      @samuelalexandershapes hehehe 😄 that was cute about your hopes for a hammer instead of a bell. 😊 I'm so glad I've given you something to enjoy researching. Torsång is located in Dalarna and if your Swedish contact (s) haven't mentioned it yet near/around the beautiful lake Siljan there are lots of handcrafters of all sorts. Specifically, you might also enjoy knowing about an amazing place that I dreamt of attending for many years but was unable to called Sätergläntan. It's like a dream come true there for all handy people and set in such an idealistic setting. You mentioned teaching and Sätergläntan is both a place one can learn or where one can work teaching others. The very best of luck to you! 🍀🌲✨🕯️

    I came here lulled by the title: calm carving. And calm it was indeed. Things I loved: 🎄That you left the natural sounds instead of replacing them with some music. I loved listening to the scraping sound of well-sharpened tools gliding through that wood. I also enjoyed the occasional barking in the background or the hen striding through the yard. The sounds of a calm day going along peacefully. 🎄That you showed each tool you used and wrote what it was for those willing to seek them. 🎄I marvelled at your nimbleness in creating such a small thing using at first tools that seemed too rough and apparently inadequate for the scope. I mean, carving with an axe and a saw? Totally worth seeing. I'm a carpenter's daughter myself and I've been brought up to love all things wood. And it brought me quite a few memories of my Dad working like this in his own workshop.❤ 🎄I always enjoy watching videos of beautiful things made of wood. I've watched so far lots of woodturning clips or of various woodworking projects. This is, though, the first one, I think, where I see something made from start to finish with just hand tools, not electric, and yes, I'll say it again, I loved it. 🎄Last but not least, your gentle voice and the fact that you took your time to offer us a few explanations of the further procedures as a closure to the video. Thank you! I'm a follower now. 🌳👍🏻

    I want to start carving so bad. I have a basic knife set, but you have all the nice stuff. Which, speaking of, I'm curious as to what the purpose of each of your knives are and why you choose them for whatever you're doing. Obviously, some are self-explanatory like for carving out bowls/cups. I understand if you don't want to take the time to explain for every single knife. Do you have a page or something that goes into explanations for each of your knives?

    • @samuelalexandershapes
      @samuelalexandershapes 3 дня назад

      I am a firm believer that you don't need all of this nice stuff to be able to carve and transport yourself into craft for a while. I am lucky enough to have encountered some great tool smiths over the years through my carving journey, but I started out with a carving kit that I purchased for under £100. I used a Mora 106, a Mora 164 and an axe from a hardware store that I re-profiled into a carving axe. This hoverer, is a great suggestion and I think you may have read my mind a little... I am beginning a new playlist series called TLC - Tool Loving Care. In this series I run through my tools, one by one, and detail what I like about them and why I have them and also sharpen a new edge on them. This first is my carving axe and I will be uploading in the next few hours.
