Calm Carving | A Walnut Bowl With Decorative Bird Detail - For My Bird Friend
Description
Another lovely day spent making
Here I create a small walnut bowl from some ‘Spalted’ walnut. Spalting is what is referred to as the patterns made by the fungal decay of wood. I encouraged this process by wrapping the log in some film towards the end of summer for a few months to ensure the log went a bit funky. Once the wood has been seasoned, it is completely safe. The pattern in the wood reminded me of a fox’s face. What shapes do you see in the spalting?
I was inspired to make a bowl of this size because my mother in law uses a similar ceramic piece for the table to put nuts and sweets in for us and guests. The idea of the bird detail soon took over when I saw some little gre...

Calm Carving | Plum Eating Spoon From a Crook
Просмотров 9 тыс.19 часов назад
A cloudy day well spent. I carry my Silky Super Accel 21 with me whenever I go on walks and here is why. I came across a plum tree with a couple of limbs tha had fallen in the summer heat with the weight of the plums. The same fate that the ones in our garden had. Thee branches were a bit larger and had some nice sections of crooked branches. Crooked benches make for great eating spoons and the...
Calm Carving | Walnut Serving Spoon - Log To Spoon
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.14 дней назад
I am back! After a little break from producing longer format media, I visited the workshop to make a walnut serving spoon from a slightly curved piece of European walnut wood. It was slightly tough and wiggly, but I loved the challenge, especially the texture left behind by the removal of the bark. Today, carving felt like meditation. I hope that you can resonate. All tools are listed in the vi...
Tutorial: How I Hollow A Wooden Vessel Using A Twca Cam
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Here is a free video explaining in depth how I hollow wood to create specific vessels using a Twca Cam Tool. The Twca Cam is a heritage tool that stems from clog making and spoon carving. I have adapted a technique to efficiently use the tool to remove material and create the undercut convex howl forms that I make. There are many other makers using this tool to create wooden vessels, but I thou...

Wow! Great work ❤
Thank you! 😊
such a lovely video, what a lucky bird friend you have! wish my tools were that sharp 🙂 very pleasing watch! thanks for sharing
Thank you very much!
Just watched this while eating breakfast. Great way to start my day. Amazing, inspiring work.
Thank you so much!
I love how the bird couldn’t resist the walnuts once they were being served out of that beautiful bowl :)
At first, it really wasn’t sure. The beginning shot took hours for it to appear. The end shot took 10 minutes… I like to think it was the bowl… but I think it’s just becoming more brave
another beauty Samuel; both the video and the artefact !! peace
That is gorgeous.
Thank you so much
The double-edged twca cam...lucky you !
Very Lovely Work!! You are an huge inspiration☺
Thank you so much!
Great video! Very helpful. I may have missed it or not gotten to it but which size of Nic’s Twca are you using here? 65 or 50?
Doh! Didn’t get far enough in. 50!
Amazing work. Do you shape them while the wood is green and refine after they dry out?
Thank you! I do 99% of the work whilst green and then a little refinement of needed once dry :)
So happy I found your channel. Excuse me while I binge watch your videos.
Thank you
True craftsman, great finnish with just a knife and no sandpaper.
The devil’s grit. Forbidden! 😂
Thank youn
I very much enjoyed watching the details of your work. thanks, and that's a lovely spoon.
Thank you very much!
So cool man! Where did you get that wool coat?
Thank you! It was an eBay find a few years ago! Very lucky
I can't stop watching. Very skilled, almost hypnotic watching those final tiny shaves with the knife, just love the sound. More please!
Another in the making! Should be released on Friday if I don’t get distracted by another project…
Awsome Samuel, I'm very envious of your skills!
Most enjoyable videos I've seen for a while. I have a thing for wood at the moment. My farther was a joiner, so I grew up amongst shavings and dust. Unfortunately he was not a good teacher and I was not a good pupil! I lost my dad a couple of years ago, and not learning anything about woodwork is a big regret. Listening to your tools cutting so beautifully takes me back to the chisel and smell of timber. I really appreciate the work you're doing, you are a good teacher and highly skilled. Hard on the body though, so be careful. I was a bricklayer, now disabled through silly things and not looking after my back it's in a bad way now. Anyway, I think you have inspired me to try something with wood. By the way, top mallet and axe work!
This is a really lovely message, thank you. I am so happy that you can reconnect with your father through making. Craft really is a beautifully holistic way of being present and mindful. I am so happy you can feel inspired to work with wood again. Thank you for reaching out. 🙏
Lovely to watch

Cut fingers by just clicking on this one.
I cut my hands just by clicking on this.
Glad to see I'm nor the only one thinking this😅
What kind of twca cam is this? It has such an interesting hollow grind. I’ve never seen a double sided one like that
Thanks for the message. This is from from Nic Westermann. He’s now making a double edge Twca cam!
what an exquisite piece. a wonderful collaboration between you and the wood worm.
Nice 👍
I was waiting for you to eat a plum with it :(
Most of the summer plums are in the freezer! I can imagine that this spoon would be good for scooping out the stone
another winner Samuel…a great little video and a great little spoon
Lovely crook spoon! Thanks for putting the time into making both the spoon and video. Branches with cranks/crooks have fascinated me over the years and are the reason I got into green woodworking. I am happy to see someone share the process. It is always interesting to me to see how other people go about it. What are your plans with the other crooks? I admire how each shape is unique and communicates with you what it wants to be.
Thank you so much for sharing and for watching! Crooks are just a marvel and a beautiful collaboration between material and maker. Like plums, they are the fruit for spoon carvers! The others will be used for other spoons eventually.. They are in the freezer, being saved for a rainy day. Thanks for following along.
Looks like it'd be great for a rustic soup or stew.
Absolutely! They are handy little things
A joy to watch. We all do lots of things the same whilst doing many different variations at the same time. Interesting.
really cool video
Outstanding sir
Many thanks
Always impressed by your hatch control.
what is that clothing style called i like it
Scarecrow Chic? Haha The over jacket is from Filson. I had to wear an insulated down jacket under from Patagonia. The shirt is just an old oversized long sleeve cotton thing and the trousers are vintage moleskine. Fisherman beanie and barefoot shoes. 💚
Nice Kashka.
super video Samuel, very relaxing to watch and a lovely end product !😊
Always good when you post
😊😊😊
Gorgeous little hook knife. Did you make it or buy it?
I got the little hook blade from Nic Westermann but handled it myself
The carving ashton kutcher. Your axe skills are amazing. Im waiting for a new long Video
Beautifule, you are so skilled
Thank you for making this video. I just wanted to ask… is it necessary to have both right-handed and left-handed Twca Cams? I use a wonderful tool maker in Kharkiv, Ukraine (Strongway Tools), and they only have one Twca Cam on their site (I’m assuming it’s a right-handed one).
Hello! Sorry for the late reply. I'd say it is necessary to be able to work the grain from both left and right into the bowl from the end grain. I know some makers are now developing double edge cams!
@@samuelalexandershapes thank you
beautiful Sam…the bowl, the video, everything !

i make spoons asw and i wish i had the skills to use the hook knife like that. I carve mostly fallen linden and its very soft. Ive heard cherry is very nice for carving. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! It comes with time and time and time.
Beautiful. I would like to know where did you buy the carving tools?
From a smith called Nic Westerman
Perfect video tutorial, many thanks for creating it Samuel. I am going to watch it and watch it to learn as much as possible. I like your work! Keep it up! So far I have made a couple of spoons and three small wooden cups, but I would like to learn and have the experience to carve a kuksa cup. Greetings from Slovakia, Slavo.
Ah I am so pleased that this is useful! Reach out to me on instagram if you can, I am not too far away in Czechia. All the best, keep it up! Sam
@@samuelalexandershapes Hello Samuel. Thank You so much for your reply. If you are in CZ, I can meet you once. Thanks!
Wow love it
Excellent video tutorial. Loads of useful information, very inspiring. Just need to save some pennies for a left and right twca cam now 😂
