The Vintage Filmmaker

Because we need a little more vintage in our movies
Back in 2020 I decided to learn more about old school filmmaking and started this channel to share the "new to me" discoveries along the way. Apparently, there's enough of you fellow vintage filmmakers out there that would like to see more of my shenanigans, so THANK YOU! I try to make films and prepare content as often as I can, usually once per month. If you have an idea for a project or just want to reach out please feel free to hit me up in the comments.

In this SPECIAL episode, I capture the big day to two of my dear friends, Kellie & Dave and get their reaction to seeing themselves captured on film - in color - FOR THE FIRST TIME! In addition, I highlight some of the history of where color film came from, including early Technicolor development, as I attempt to rise to the challenge and make something worthy of my friend's big day. How do the...
I use a forgotten method with my vintage era movie camera!
Просмотров 8 тыс.4 года назад
In this video, we dive a little deeper into the forgotten craft of "the rack-over" method used in Old Hollywood for more than half a century, as I demonstrate what it was like to shoot this way using my own vintage movie camera! If this sounds familiar, yes I did very quickly hit on this topic in a previous video, but I felt like I didn't do it justice. Besides, I didn't have a good way of repr...

This was part of my latest video in my Vintage Filmmaker series that I figured I could share on its own. ENJOY!!! If you like this and would like to...

I use a Vintage Movie Camera in 2020 and develop the film!!!

Is this little movie camera still reliable!??? In this follow up from my previous video continuing my vintage movie camera journey, I discover whether or not this Bell & Howell Filmo 70 motion picture camera I purchased from the internet still works, what the experience was like making a silent-era style movie, and see how the film develops! (( In spite of any mishaps I may have introduced :/ )...

I have 3 Bell and Howell cameras A 70dr and 2 134’s . Great video! Enjoyed all your videos . Hope you will decide to make more.!
I'm fascinated by old audio recording techniques with the same fire and passion you have with film cameras. I'd like to have a recording studio with nothing made after 1969.
Saludos desdén Argentina!!!

i have a ton of old cameras 1 35mm motion picture camera and a kodak 1940s 8mm camera and some others cameras
There’s also the possibility of getting a fully working Super 8 camera converted to crystal sync when shooting silent cartridges. Then it’s just a matter of slating and lining up the film scan in editing with the sound.
B&H made a camera slider before they became cool nearly 60 years later during the DSLR era. How neat is that
Funnily enough, that's not actually true. Film favours overexposure (digital, the opposite). It's always wise to overexpose film (unless it's reversal film) by +1 to +2 stops because unlike digital, you *can* get it back, because celluloid doesn't clip to white.
AWESOME WORK!!!!
Oh man I wish you had more videos about motion picture cameras and movie making techniques. Fascinating!
Thanks! I'll do my best to have more soon!
Great video. Tx
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
This was great fun! How's that sync sound project coming along?! Would love to see an update on yr vintage escapades!!
I actually was able to acquire a sound-sync Auricon camera! But I'm afraid life and lack of funding have kept me from sustaining the channel (for now). I would LOVE to make though and have been working on my next video and possibly starting a Patreon to help with this, so stay tuned!
I like so MUCH this video because i'm i'm a era like this with a i think 1950's Konica s rangefinder that My brother bought me and damn it doesnt work but i manage to fix it or i think the las roll that i put on this camera has turned only a third of it, now after i did a Lot of other improvement and fixing a what i think is a light leak i only want to reaconditionate it with a new skin and shoot a other roll of a camera that give me a Lot of pain and i think i will only know until i get another 35mm film and take another test and i hope i will not get a third of all the pictures and i can show mu brohter that the cameta he gave me i get it to work and the emotion you put in this video is the emotion that i hope i put I only hope that like You i get My camera to work well
Thanks so much @maximilianoocampo5921 I sincerely appreciate it and glad you enjoy the video :D Good luck with your camera journey!
It looks great!
Thanks!
Beautiful picture great film love it
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Finally someone doing videos and actually shooting with those old movie cameras, rather than blabbering about stuff how they works and so on.
At 3:39, from what I understand it’s called “Opening Day Quality”.
@ Vintage Filmmaker So im looking at my bell and howell 70HR here and there is a tiny viewfinder which you use to focus the lenses. You turn the lens plate to align the lens with the viewfinder and you can SEE if the lens is focused or not. No need to stick it on an DSLR.
@ Vintage Filmmaker The viewfinder is on the wind up key side, under to the shutter button. Yours has one too. Its that little round window. Click your lens CW one click to bring it line with that viewfinder. Then you can look through the lens to focus it on camera for the shot. Thats how it was done before DSLRs were invented.
Way ahead of you! ruclips.net/video/OL0U5EgOFRU/видео.htmlsi=MNFUs6_7dQ2O2w0v&t=464
I have been scoring and accompanying silent films for almost 45 years, so I share your love for the wonderful look and feel of film...I am even trying to keep 16mm presentations alive at our local Laurel and Hardy club meetings. As a camera collector, I appreciate your introducing all to the rackover system. I believe it was part of the "golden age" look due to the constraints it put on camera movement, etc. (Lord, I dislike modern "shaky-cam"😵💫). My Kodak Cine Special has a unique way of accomplishing the rackover that you might enjoy researching. While I have a number of 16mm and 35mm cameras and projectors, my dream is to have an unmodified Mitchell and Bell & Howell 2709 (I dream big). Finally, I absolutely love your idea of creating a vintage studio, something I have thought about for years. Please keep us all posted and keep up these fine video productions. I will now subscribe, Mr. "LLoyd".🤓
AWESOME!!!
Thanks!!
AMAZING 😢
Milo is my new favorite character of all time
This is pure joy! Subscribed!
Wow, what an experience to see you working and acting. Great job and I was handclapping at the end. Your video looks perfect and the movies do it too. I found your channel by chance and I will follow of course. More than forty years ago I made some super 8 movies with a Braun camera borrowed from a friend, then used Video for many yeras. Three years ago i managed to buy two 16 mm cameras (Canon scoopic from 1966 and Scoopic M from the 1970s) and filmed several expired rolls of Kodak, but still was not able to find a Laboratory in Europe that will do the developing and scanning for under 100USD per roll. Its shocking expensive. I have several 8mm cameras from the 1950s and perhaps I'll try to revive them. They have spring driven motors.
Where did you get double perf 500T?
Awwww ill like Milo’s photo
I got addicted to this whole camera thing thanks to a canon t70 SLR. I love it still, but guessing is kinda fun in a way with my Demi and various folding cameras I own :3
God damn your setup is absolutely gorgeous though. My 16mm is a keystone a9 criterion. Yours is a lottttttt nicer. I really just wanted to use mine to shoot music videos but I fucked up and ordered a 33ft lomo tank instead of the 100ft variation and developing my own 16mm is going to be an issue lmao.. four whole cycles for a single roll <3 I also don’t have a 16mm projector for telecine so I might just find a real film gate and build a scanner instead..
I have an 8mm canon which has a second viewfinder (which is sadly inverted) so you can rack down by flipping the turret. Its rough but it works
You should get a 16mm film projector!
I know right!?? I need a patreon so I can afford keep trying out more vintage toys!!! What do you think?
You should get a 16mm projector.
To answer the question in the end: absolutely yes! Trivia about thr Mitchell camera, One of the most modified Mitchells ever would have belonged to Stanley Cubrick for the movie Berry Lyndon... And when it comes to film formats, there is no better story than the one about the 2 friends who went from making 16mm surfing movies to pioneering IMAX 70mm (MacgGillivray and Freedman). Anyway keep up the amazing work!
I like your hat.
I have some Filmos (and a 35mm Eyemo). They're good, robust and reliable. However, they're, optically, not the best. Had you used a serviced and adjusted Bolex H16, with a Switar lens, you'd see an improvement. Maybe at some future date, would you consider filming the same scene simultaneously, with a high-end 16mm camera, against the Filmo?
I thought you had a million followers or something cause that’s some quality content but well😮 anyway I’m a subscriber now
Thanks so much! That's very kind of you to say. I sincerely wish I had 1M subs lol Then I could afford to sustain the channel :D Should I start a Patreon???
@@TheVintageFilmmaker definitely, plus a new video first to announce it!
As a fan of old european trash cinema. My first thought to make a non sync camera do sound is simple .. just dub it! :D Also. If there's one thing I know about those films and of the low budget scene in Hong Kong and japanese industries as well. It's that the sound almost never matches the musical performances. Jokes aside. It was fun to see this project go that well.
Thank you Andy. I can feel you enthusiasm, something missing todays z and millennial generations.
You're welcome! But I'm actually a millennial and I have two daughters that are Z and we're all extremely passionate in our generations! Sorry you're experience has you seeing us a different way, but I promise there's more people now enthusiastic about vintage history, analog film, and all the fun things than there's ever been. Thanks for watching!!! Glad you enjoyed the video :D More to come (someday lol)
I just found your channel. Everyone of your videos are excellent. Keep on shooting. Just subscribed.
Thank you so much! It's been hard to make more but I will do my best. I might start a patreon so that I can afford to do this more often, so stay tuned!
Great video for movie enthusiasts. I’m 95 and still playing with my 8mm beautiful 3 lens turret Bolex cameras . I think real photography is FILM above all. Digital is great but young amateurs should experience fim shooting in still and movies. These cameras are so well designed…Developing comes next ….Editing your movies also is super important and rewarding.
I've got a 70-DR, too. Love that sound.
Fantastic video as always! I’ve been staring at an old Auricon setup for a while now, and seeing what it’d take to sync my BH Filmo , I’m now really tempted to pull the trigger on it. It comes with the original tube amp, which would be a fun project of its own to fix back up. I do a lot of WWII reenacting so it’d definitely be handy to have around! Also, they did make an external motor drive for the Filmo, they crop up on eBay from time to time. They take the place of the Filmo hand crank and rely on the internal governor, so it wouldn’t be as good as Crystal Sync but it’d be more consistent, and let you burn a whole spool in one go.
I actually wound up getting an Auricon!!! It's BEAUTIFUL and I can't wait to release a video on it. Sadly, life and work has eaten all my time (and money) so it's slow going. I was thinking of starting a Patreon so I can sustain this channel and afford to make more videos. What do you think!?? Thanks again. Stay tuned!!
I have an old double 8 bell and a Howell camera I'm trying to find one from them 16mm or bigger somehow
I Just found your channel. SUB'd 😃I have bought, repaired and about to run my first roll of standard 8mm through a Yashika 8-E Reflex. Brought-up in world of digital media, I now understand your excitement and apprehensions of using film. The reason we film is to record a moment of time, and at the point of hitting the shutter those records become history; a memory. Film provides that look of a memory we see in our minds, something of which digital cannot reproduce (not until a 'New' format/media is invented and our nostalgia baseline shifts)
Very good and I think the people from the past are probably smirking right about now.
I did some thing similar. In the later decades. I was recording a talent show with two reasonably professional cameras and silly little me decided to grab some candid shots with my iPhone...... My unsynced iPhone! What a nightmare trying to synchronize these 10 second, clips three minute clips.... First I had to find where they went but of course the time on the file and the time on the video wasn't quite in Sync so that only got me in the ballpark over like a three hour talent show! But I did it a combination of getting it close and checking the Audio it was worth it. But I now know about time Code and Audio time code at that. And had I had about a week more time to think about what I was going to be doing I probably could've ripped some thing up like the FM radio transmitter monstrosity that I thought of on the way home.....
11:01 what is that monitor? It's so tiny!
So amazing
I still own a spring wound 16mm Pathe Webo. I’m in the mood to shoot with it. It was also made in the 1940s. But I’d like to mimic the color home movies in the 1940s.
