Long Term Review - SWD Ultralight Long Haul 50 Backpack - Superior Wilderness Designs
Hey folks!
After using this backpack for a good amount of time, I've finally got round to making a long term review video about it. In the video, you can see how the pack material is doing after about 2,000 trail miles, and hear my thoughts on how the pack has served me over the last 18 months. I hope you'll find it useful if you're considering purchasing one yourself.

Hiking the Tour of the Lake District - Part 3/3 - The Best Multi Day Lake District Hike?

The Tour of the Lake District is possibly one of the best multi-day hikes in England's Lake District. It covers roughly 100 miles of stunning scenery, and has optional ascents of some of the most famous peaks such as Helvellyn and Scafell Pike. On my way to hike the Tour of the Lake District, I decided to hike a roughly 50 mile section of the Dales High Way. I have a 2023 wendigo (now Wolverine). I can confirm I have that same issue with the little gatekeepers coming undone. My only complaint is that I wish they used a little wider webbing on the shoulder straps and the hipbelt. Other than that it’s been the best pack I’ve ever owned.

    • @PaulandaPack

    Nic review. I have a Wolverine 70. Same design but bigger packbag, longer stays and thicker hipbelt. My buddy has the same pack you do. Main difference is that everything besides water fits inside my pack and on long water carrys (we do a bit of desert hiking- so a 4L water carry is standard, 6-8L not unusual with an occasional 10L carry) - my pack is a bit more comfortable. I did get mine seam taped and replaced the back pad with a cutdown Zlite pad (the bumpiness aids in ventilation).

    Packs can now be seam sealed for $75 where fabric allows. I think yours is Ultra 200 (no longer available), as you got yours before mine. Mine is UltraX 200, which should be an improvement. I use shock cord with Line Loks on the bottom, because opening the pack changes the structure and may loosen up the non-stretchy straps, whereas shock cord just lives with it. I carry a folded CCF mat on the bottom.

    It annoys me how a lot of manufacturers call their products ultralight even though they are relatively heavy. This backpack is lighter than a traditional heavy backpack, but it is far from ultralight. I'm looking for a new backpack, but I want a truly ultralight one with a weight under 600g.

    When you resupplied for how mans day did you have to buy food at the most? How easy was it to buy a gas can? And last but not least: at what time of the year did you start (where all the places open when you passed them?)

    • @PaulandaPack
      @PaulandaPack 18 дней назад

      I started on August 28th in the Basque Country, and finished October 1st, (35 days including 1 day where I didn't walk). I averaged just under 15 miles per day in my 35 days, although some were approaching 25 miles, and others were less. Most of the manned Refuges were open, I only remember passing 2 or 3 that were closed. The small shop in Tavascan was shut for the season when I got there. Most of the shops in the small mountain towns and villages close during the afternoon and open again at 5 or 6pm, some don't open until lunchtime, it's a bit of a lottery. I generally carried about 3 days food, and used manned refuges for a meal if I passed one. I did end up staying in more hotels than I'd planned, so didn't use as much food at camp as I'd thought I would. I guess the amount of food you carry depends on how many miles you're covering each day. For gas canisters you want to look for a Decathlon or Intersport, they will have them 99% of the time. In small mountain towns and villages, the canisters are difficult to come by. I detoured south from Parzan to Bielsa so that I could re-stock, get a hostel, and I found screw-top gas canisters there. The town of Encamp in Andorra was a good size with lots of shops and gas canisters for sure. I would advise buying a large size one or 2 small ones, whenever you find somewhere that sells them if you're low. Hope this helps. I might make a video with some general information about these types of things in the next few months.

    What a great trail video! The wind! What do you think about how the Dipole held up? Did you have to fiddle with it during the night, or was it solid once you pitched it? Thx for any comments about it. I really enjoy your trails!

    • @PaulandaPack
      @PaulandaPack 18 дней назад

      Many thanks! I was actually pitching the Dipole wrongly for this entire trip, which resulted in it being really 'flappy' and not tensioned correctly. It still held up well in the wind, and I only had to get out to tighten a line once when it slipped. I've since had it out in 35mph winds (pitched correctly) and it was sturdy. The problem I had was with stakes being pulled out of the soft wet ground. Once I put rocks on top of them, it solved that problem.

      @@PaulandaPackThank you so much for your comments. You have very good videos on Tarptent Dipole and Double Rainbow in real conditions. I’ve been struggling between the two styles (in a double wall for either). Your wind results are very compelling for the Dipole even though I expect the DBL rainbow would be good too. That hidden stash pocket, which is a common feature on Deuter rucksacks as well, is good for housekeys and reserve cash - the kind of things that you want secreted away from light fingers, and that you don't need to get at yourself in a hurry, either. Also, these things are quite low volume, so shouldn't interfere with using the large external stow pocket.

    • @PaulandaPack

      Hey, I've still got the pack - absolutely love the comfort and the load carry on it. The delamination is basically on the really high wear areas, mainly the roll top closure. I've not been back to SWD about it as I think this is just what's to be expected with the material, and the amount of use that it's had. There's still no rips, tears, holes or signs of major wear to the fabric on the outside. It's been about 18 months that I've had it now, so maybe I should do a little video update on it.

    Great review and channel. I have the Topo MTN racer 3 and the Topo terraventure 4. I where each equally. The MTN racer 3 seems to be more durable around the sole cushion edges and has more padding, but I find the terraventure 4 more stable. You might give the Terraventure 4 a try for the type of hiking you do. They are medium cushion. Not as responsive as the MTN racer 3, but I've never felt that the terraventure 4 was uncontrollable on long walks. ✌️ from Tennessee.

      Hey, I usually carry the small 200g screw on style for shorter trips like this. The ones I found were the bigger 500g ones. If you can get to a Decathlon or Intersport store, they usually have a good selection of all types and sizes. There's a Decathlon about 20 minutes by bus from the Airport. If you can't get to one of them, you'll have to try all the Hardware stores (Ferreteria). Some sell them, some don't. I found a canister in the third one I tried. Looking back, I should have just gone to Decathlon. Hope this helps.

    I bought the DOPOLE 2LI BLEM earlier this year and during this summer season have used it on 4 backpacking trips in the high altitude (10,000 ft plus) wilderness areas of Utah and Wyoming in the USA. LOVE THIS TENT! Getting the perfect pitch is easy for me - just make sure it is "square" when setting the four stakes (the setup on Tarptent's website is very useful), and adjust the poles (angle and height) as needed. Very stable using just the four stakes and INCREDIBLY STABLE using all guy out points with eight stakes. The "windows" are what sold me - unique and so great to have for views and ventilation - cannot find that with any other pole tent out there. I agree with this tent also being the most roomy 2 person tent out there, especially weighing at 2 lbs (including extra stakes and guylines) - massive indeed, which is what I have found to be it's "biggest" drawback (*pun intended, haha!) - you have to have a 8 foot square space for this palace, but as you said not a problem in most cases. A palace indeed. I really appreciate your feedback regarding the windows keeping the rain out from gail force winds and rain blowing directly against the windows - had wondered about that situation. Also because of your video I will be investing in the liner for the high humid trips to avoid any condensation dripping on me. Really appreciate your videos and the work you put into them!

    • @PaulandaPack
      @PaulandaPack Месяц назад

      Thank you very much mate, appreciate hearing your views on the tent. I've just had it out on a very windy trip to the Peak District in the UK. I clocked winds at 36.8 mph, and there was a pretty heavy hailstorm too. The tent was fine with both. It does get quite 'flappy' in strong winds, but once all the guys were out, it stood up really well. The ground was quite soft however, and if I hadn't put large rocks on top of the stakes, things would have been very different. That's not a problem specific to this one tent though. The liner did a really good job - condensation turned to frost/ice overnight, then started dripping in the morning, but the liner caught everything. Hope you continue to have great trips with yours!

      @@craigsmith9541 Well, I liked some features of the DR, especially the porch mode. The room inside was great too. I didn't have it out in anything over 15-20mph, and it handled that pretty well. The main worry I had was the small carbon crossing pole, and how much it flexed when the sides were hit by wind. I know that trekking poles can be inserted on the inside to help ease this problem, but I didn't have much success when I tried, though I was probably doing it wrong! The Dipole 2, I've had out in almost 40mph winds. It's actually really surprised me with it's performance. Personally, I'd take the Dipole over the DR Ultra, even though the Dipole 2 does get pretty noisy when the wind is causing the material to flap around.

    There is hardly any detailed information about SWD backpacks on YT - nice that you took it over, Paul =) I've stuck with the Movement, which comes pretty close to my requirements. Unfortunately, there is no information on the width and length of the mesh compartment for the back padding on the SWD website. I would like to use my Gossamer Gear Air Flow SitLight Camp Seat in 26cm width for the padding because it is very breathable and I don't want to do without it anymore. I would of course shorten the length to the size of the mesh compartment. So my question: Can you please measure the width and length of the mesh compartment on your Long Haul? These should be the same size for all SWD frame backpacks, including the Movement... Many thanks and greetings, Matthias

      @@PaulandaPack Hey Paul - thank you for the information. That helps me a lot. What I haven't really figured out yet is the right back length for me, as I'm always between S and M in terms of sizes. I wrote to SWD about this before and got an answer, but it was more of a recommendation for my back length and unfortunately without an exact specification in centimeters. Even if the back length according to this recommendation may be right for some, I want to decide for myself the right size based on the exact measurements - especially when it comes to such an exclusive and expensive backpack. Unfortunately, I've had more than one bad experience with such recommendations for ultralight backpacks in the past and have had to send them back to the USA at great expense or sell them in Germany for far less than their value. I definitely want to avoid that here. Now I've heard that you have the backpack in size L and that you had a long discussion with SWD before you ordered the backpack. Perhaps you learned something about the exact back lengths in centimeters in your conversation with SWD? Sorry for the long post, but maybe you can help me...? Thanks in advance and regards, Matthias

      @@QuasiCamper Hey Matthias. It's always difficult ordering something like this when you can't try it out first. As you say, returning or selling on can be a costly problem. The only advice I can offer is that I'm nearer the high end of the size range on the large torso pack, and my friend is closer to the bottom of the size range for the large torso. My friend has tried my pack whilst loaded, and said he'd definitely order the same size if he were to get one. His torso size is about 50cm, or 19.6" I'm sorry I can't be of more help! Have you got a pack that you use at the moment that fits well? If so, maybe you could check the size on that and compare with the SWD one?

      @@PaulandaPack Hello Paul, Thank you very much for your tips. Yes, I currently have the GG Gorilla in size S. Even though the backpack could be 2 cm longer, I get on much better with it than with the size M, which I tested before. It seems to be exactly the opposite with your friend. The back length is actually very individual. But - just today I received an answer from SWD: “The torso size on a small is 16", this is measured from the crest between the shoulder straps down to the center line of the belt. The bottom of the pack is about 2.5" below that, and would be about 18.5" on a small. That translates to 47 cm to bottom of the pack, 48cm to the bottom of the belt as the belt hangs down a bit below the bottom of the pack. The medium is 18" to the center line of the hip belt and 20.5 to the bottom of the pack. Or 52cm to the bottom of the pack and 53cm to the bottom of the belt. ” That helps me a lot and confirms that I also need size S for SWD backpacks. Perhaps this will also help others here who have the same problem with the correct back length... Nevertheless, thank you again for your help. Best regards, Matthias
