Probably Shouldn't Have Done This - Pulling 30' Trailer Off-Road Up Mountain Road
Caterpillar D4 helps out when the 550 couldn't do it. Not sure how we're going to get this thing down off the mountain now...
Dozer/Tractor is a 1951 D4-7U with a 5.7L 4-cyl diesel. Gas pony motor with electric start. Truck is a F550, 6.0 Powerstroke, gross weight is 11,500 pounds. The trailer is a 30 foot with 2 slide outs. Not sure about it's weight, but I think it may be around 7,000 pounds.

    We were wheeling in the bighorns and I was caught by surprise we came to a valley where there were 5-6 big trailers and trucks, and I wondered how that went getting that shit up there. Now I know. The trails weren’t too technical but not something I’d drag a one ton dually hooked to a big fifth wheel down. Just risking 100’s of thousands to get back there isn’t worth it to me. There’s a place for them, it’s just closer to pavement.

    • @Smoking-Diesel
      @Smoking-Diesel 4 месяца назад

      Just a 4-way blade. I've fit a good 5 yards in the dump bed, but we are usually hauling rock and are limited by weight. The truck weighs about 11,500 lbs and the gross limit is 17,900, so we're only able to get about 3 yards without the truck creaking and groaning. I've unintentionally loaded it up to 22,000 before and it did just fine but it being a 6.0, we try to baby it a bit.

      We just made the road, so the dirt was new, and not packed in enough. It was also still too narrow of a turn at that point. I was driving. Right at the time I was committed, my wife goes, “Maybe this isn’t a good idea,” and I lost both my momentum and my concentration. We get stuck on the driveway probably 3-4 times a year on average (it’s homemade, half mile long and still in progress due to the price of rock) usually not in good weather, and not once on purpose.

    what we used to do in the winter is put an electric blanket on the engine over night that only works if you have electricity close by if your big engine is in good shape i would guess it is because i didnt see you spray starting fluid that tells me the engine must be in better shape than most i have seen if your oil pressure guage on your big engine is not working get it fixed that way you can watch it come up when your oil pressure is up on big engine then open the fuel throttle on big engine those pony engines were not designed to run for long periods of time the other reason you need that oil guage is when you are running operating you can know oil pressure not uncommen for oil pressure to be 20 lbs at idle when warm40-60lbs at half throttle or more if its better yhan that you have a pretty good engine

    • @Smoking-Diesel
      @Smoking-Diesel 4 месяца назад

      That's a lot of good information. Thank you. The electric blanket trick wouldn't be too practical in our off-grid situation. The people that owned it before we did told me to use starting fluid without warning me about it. They needed it probably because the pony motor fuel system was so gunked up. My kid is going to be taking diesel technology classes, so maybe he can fix the gauge. By then the pony will probably need a rebuild... There are local people who will do an electric starter conversion for $900, but I do like the ritual of the pony motor. I will stop liking it when the pony motor doesn't work. Thanks again for the info.

I applied for a job once and they were going to try me out I was going out on a Case 590 and I walked over to the machine lifted the side panel off and checked the oil antifreeze belts etc they said I had about 2 hours before I would start so I extended the boom and loader and greased the old girl , I got a phone call the next day telling me I was hired and asked me what I expected for a wage! What won me the position was when I checked the oil I was told later! But if you take care of your machine the machine will take care of you 😀🇨🇦

      Thank you :) It's an aftermarket blade setup that was already on it when I got it. It's actually capable of being used as an angle blade, which would be pretty ridiculous on that little machine. The location and angle of the hydraulics gives a lot less leverage than what would have been supplied by Cat, as I understand it, but it's what I got. The lines were a mess when I got it. They actually dangled on the tracks. I put on all new lines (after breaking one...), and tidied them up as best I could with my meager skills at the time. There's enough clearance that the tracks never touch them. Thanks again for watching!

      When I got her it was hit and miss… mostly miss. There was a giant handful of rust in the pony motor gas tank and the metal fuel lines were rusted and obstructed. I rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel lines, and cleaned and coated the tank. That was four years ago. She will still start, usually on the first try if there’s no water in the gas, but the carb is due to have the jets cleaned out.

      The new stuff is fancy, but the old stuff was sure made well. I know it sat for years. The only issue I had to deal with was the pony motor fuel line and carburetor. It’s a great machine, even at over 70 years old. Thanks for watching.

    Interesting air cleaner on an old D4. They came with oil bath air cleaners not the one shown.

      I can't remember the details, but I recall in my manual that there were two types of air cleaners. I think the non-oil type is the later one. The pony motor has an oil bath air cleaner though. Thanks for watching!
