I tested the auto focus, manual focus, and I even put it on a gimbal.

    Great vid. Was the 135 IS on the RS3 adding to the stabalization, or did you switch off the IS while on the gimbal because they didn't play nice??? Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • @coryinsights
      @coryinsights Месяц назад

      Every shot you see had the IS on, it's such a slight adjustment there's no real downside, it just takes out the micro shakes you get with a cinema camera. it's not like some Canon or Sony cameras that might give you that unnatural 'wobble' when you have image stabilization on the lens and the camera, which I personally have noticed that issue more on canon than on sony.

    Would you say V Raptor over Komodo X for bigger production sets?

    • @coryinsights
      @coryinsights 10 месяцев назад

      I think it depends on the production. I know Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 used the V-raptor and the Komodo for different shots. if the end use is just social/web I don't think the 6k or 8k matters, but if for your shoot you want super slow mo then of course that's where the Komodo is weaker. but if your shoot is gimbal and movement focused, then you might not want to deal with a heavier and bigger setup like the v-raptor.

    Serious question; will using a red v raptor in comparison to the Nikon z9 improve the image quality in the same lighting conditions? In the Nikon z9 I shoot 8k raw. Was wondering if the v raptor will outperform in terms of image quality since both can shoot 8k raw. I don’t care so much about the higher Frame rate in the raptor.

    • @coryinsights
      @coryinsights Год назад

      the short answer is yes the image quality is better, but it just depends on what kind of work you do. if you deliver finished videos to the end client and they don't necessarily care which camera you use, then the added image quality isn't worth the drawbacks. the z9 is a great camera.

      depends if you have a crew, i have both, the z9 is amazing for eye tracking / gimbal work and on a motorised slider / ease of use and quick boot up time when you cant control everything. the 12 bit raw looks amazing on the z9 but the 16bit out of the raptor has better colorthat i can see with my eye and i prefer the noise grain structure and codec of the raptor but also makes it kinda a pain to rig up and use if working on shoots with smaller budgets as the z9 can use smaller gimbals smaller tripods smaller sliders exct hope that helps~

    Thanks Cory for posting! I'm kind of trying to look for a combination that is the sharpest I can for a documentary I'm planning, and it seems pretty great. I was thinking of Panasonic S1 Raw with the Leica sl lenses(because these lenses are quite amazing in terms of sharpness) but it seems really great on the raptor(also more expensive to be honest). The Raptor can also tweak the OLPF, right?

    • @coryinsights
      @coryinsights Год назад

      Resolution comes into play a bit when you're talking about sharpness, so the 8k raptor is going to beat the 6k on the s1. and in terms of OLPF, I was able to find this from searching, "the raptor has an OLPF stack, but the sensor has improved such that high spatial frequencies can be recorded without artifacts so the lens characteristics can come through and not be impacted by the sensor." and I would agree with that.

    All RF lenses are non-linear manual focus, but I heard that we can adjust to linear with Canon Mirrorless camera. How about using with v-raptor? I'm curious because it's a necessary part when using it with a focus motor.

    • @coryinsights
      @coryinsights Год назад

      Hey great comment! Made me go down a research rabbit hole, so thank you for that. Based on what I could find, yes there is a menu item on some of the newer canon mirrorless models where you can make the lens focus linear instead of focusing faster or slower based on how fast or slow you turn the ring. However on the V-Raptor I couldn't find anything in the menus or online, so it seems like a cinema lens is still going to be the most accurate when using a focus motor. The RF lenses are really more for everyday use, when you might be using autofocus half the time. I've been wanting to test them out with a remote follow focus, so maybe I'll put that to the test in a future video and see how the RF lens really behaves with a focus motor.

But the stuff that I was mostly shooting was travel run-and-gun style with a few corporate videos sprinkled here and there. The RED got used literally a couple of times only. It was the worst run-and-gun camera as you may imagine. But, a friend of mine who was mainly shooting music videos (or was aspiring to shoot that) he got a RED at pretty much the same time and he's been a RED shooter since then. I think the only drawback for me was having to use dji’s lenses or small primes to get the most out of it. It’s a unique camera, but it’s like anything else in the sense that if you put enough time into it and understanding its nuances you’ll make awesome videos with it. I think ultimately choosing the right camera comes down to what kind of work you do, how you operate and choosing a setup that you enjoy using.

      @@coryinsights As an owner of a Ronin 4D for 8 months...I agree about the limitations but I found that I own probably every E-mount prime G-master lens and they all work/balance without issues. Even the heavier 135 1.8 (while not perfect..motors take care of the rest)... I realized the benefits, intuitiveness and overall accuracy in a cinema camera coming from a long time sony user were beneficial to me. I too wanted to challenge myself and up the overall production. I truly want the rest of the world to take a chance on this camera as it's not as bad as I initially expected it to be as well as many other people have. I look forward to seeing the next iteration considering how much they nailed this on their first cinema camera.
