Thank you so much everybody. This video is pretty old but if it means anything, this really helped me out. Imagine replacing a battery, and then worrying that by fixing one huge problem you caused another! Glad to know I just didnt reconnect it all the way.

From what I've seen people say in other posts about this issue, best bet is probably to by a used motherboard that doesn't work and would just be for parts. Then just carefully remove the clip from that motherboard and put on your laptop.

I sadly upgraded laptop , hhd to ssd , which I had to remove the keyboard to access hard drive for this swap , anyway short story I got involved in screws ( to open laptop a couple of times ) and all that which after reconnecting everything I had trouble with that one last one the keyboard and being in this state of " tired and get all done asap " I broke the black piece which holds the keyboard cable! Nightmare soon began for me with getting the keyboard cable to be fastened in place ! So for about a week , every other day I got into this battle to make keyboard function, thought just about all forms of tape, masking being the better , anyway I got it to work but some keys began to not function , so I was stuck! I tried and tried and at times I had it working so I thought until I noticed some keys not working , so stuck! At one point I thought I should just get a bluetooth keyboard and use laptop as a desktop , so yeah , but I just could not let it as is and kept working around the various taping methods which I gave up but thought about gluing the black fasterner to a business card!? So I took a pause decided to really peak inside and just investigate around the motherboard connector area, after a good study of it I noticed the pins , there is a small degree of space between motherboard base and the keyboard cable! ( the same about as the black fastener thickness) I had a couple of types of thin materials I was going to try to fasten on top which did not work so with the study of the distance of motherboard base and keyboard cable is a very very thin space for which I just went with it and slid a thin piece of material (metrocard which is plastic thin plastic) slid it on top of keyboard cable as the cable fit into connector ! It amazingly slid in and the keyboard cable got secured beautifully in place , later after I connecting all turn laptop on , all keys so far work ! It has worked so far with all keys functioning THANK GOD I hope this reckless handling of my upgrade experience help !? I don't recommend this but it has worked , a alternative from taping and retaping which kept slipping slightly out causing non functioning keys!

So you attached the plastic material to the cable and then fitted it in or you used the plastic to wedge the cable into place? I have exactly the same issue, except my black connector piece broke off and got lost - inside - the laptop somewhere. lol

You can try cut up plastic piece such as from those ram memory stick plastic packs and cut it to the tip of the size and then tape it down to fit the tip end... This would then add tension in place to compress the pins in place which will be a tight fitting. If you can get it in.. tape it down and test it afterwards

  • @RICHARDGRAHAM44944

Here's the deal: the ribbon as you have it positioned now is flipped on its back. The tension from that will not allow it to close. Turn the keyboard over in it's installed position, the ribbon would then be flat with no tension. Lift the top just enough to be able to insert and plug in the ribbon, close the clasp and you're done.

Try double sided tape thin type though, put it on the ribbon cable underneath and also on the plastic clip underside too, should work i have done it a few time before on repairs to clients laptops, use the tape and double it up if you have a gap from motherboard to the ribbon on the keyboard, pack it i think the term is called, then peel the double sided tape from the plastic strip lock mechanism and make sure the keyboard ribbon is in then push it down and make sure its stuck firm. Then when done, pop some tape over the whole thing to give it security that it wont come out during transit and moving about...Hope that makes sense folks....

found this video when trying to think of a way to fix an old Toshiba ... the problem is that while i was careful, the plastic clip itself broke into like 3 pieces when it flipped up ... i wonder if the heat (Toshiba's are known for overheating ... at least in that era ... @ 2008-2009ish) made it so brittle ... I use a usb KB with it now but i still have the old one here and the connection wasn't complete but it did work when i plugged it back in ... no matter what DIY method i tried ... it'd just wouldn't stay-put without that black clip firmly holding it down

I think I'm having a similar issue with a Nintendo Switch joy con. The black plastic clip was stuck, so when I tried to pry it up to get the ribbon cable out, it broke in 3 pieces. So now there's no black clip and kapton tape isn't much help. Did you ever find a fix?
