Happy Birthday Geordie Walker - Killing Joke Communion Guitar Riffs with Yamaha THR 30II
Happy birthday to the one-man-orchestra and bringer of the fire from heaven, Kevin "Geordie" Walker. I wanted to see if I could make a patch using only my THR practice amp that got anywhere near. The stereo chorus and tape echo built in helped. My big rig is in the van for rehearsal tonight!

I've just been listening to Geordie's demos and this could have easily been one of them, a very good tune by the way. I can imagine him in the studio playing it with a fag hanging out of his mouth. I never met the guy but his death is the only death of a famous person that has ever bothered me. Walking on familiar ground reduced to tears Remember friends and faces, passing of the years All those who shared with us the ordeals and the pain Hearts of gold walk down golden lanes.
Good stuff, reminds me of the gig at the Ritz
@@Jabular1 it was such an incredible album and time to see them live. I actually heard some bits of it before it was released at Youth’s house in London first time I met him. “Apotheosis” I think he mentioned was his fave.
@@FletcherFathoms Brilliant album and extra CD, no fillers on either. I've seen KJ a few times but the Ritz gig was my favourite. It was nice to hear the new album played live. I was in the mosh most of the night and the sound was excellent. I woke up in the hotel the next day and felt like I'd had ten rounds with Mike Tyson, lol .... a good night indeed.
@@Jabular1 - sounds awesome. It's amazing to see them in an intimate venue. Saw them at the oldest cinema in the UK for a warm up show and they just unleashed fire on about 200 people - people don't know until they experience KJ live the sheer power. X
A great tribute to Geordie Walker, 1 year after. Jaz Coleman should contact you to play live with Killing Joke - the band must keep going the tours !
Thanks a high compliment and much-appreciated. It would be terrifying and thrilling to play with the mighty KJ, but I don't know if anyone besides Geordie would be accepted and I understand as a fan and friend of the band why. If there were ever a tribute type of concert with the original members and guest(s) guitarist I would be well up for it.
@@FletcherFathoms You should contact somehow Jaz C, the section "Tour" on the official website remains of course desperately empty. Even for tribute concerts: you should give it a try, woud be an immense thing. I will buy tickets for sure!
Really awesome! Seems easy - but it's not - as it sounds so right. Really top!
Thank you so much! Some of these riffs I wrote many years ago and it feels good to rip on em again. X
just unreal. Everything you play always sounds awesome. Starting to think i need to invest in a Reverend now too.
@@cactus-mcjacktus - Many 🙏 been rocking the Revs for 25 years - many stages/genres/bands. 🤯 Eek! This one is wild Joe Naylor/Reeves Gabriel’s design. Sounds and feels amazing. X
@@FletcherFathomsWell, i think if there's anything to treat myself with i've got a few ideas. Also, I know that you can plug the Amp1 into a cabinet, but for recording these videos is it all direct? I love the tones (and to be honest would love a similar guitar rig) but i think it's important to know if it's direct or not first.
@ these are direct tones. The Iridium has an analogue cab sim that sounds better than the silver addition which I also have. Bizarrely, the cab sim sounds better when you are still plugged into a cab, so if you are going to be recording direct and not playing live through a cab, there might be a better solution for you. However, I’ve tried a lot of modellers and the BluGuitar blows most out of the water as it is a real analogue amp in the room. The other thing to consider is that I’m running everything stereo from a super rare analogue ADT from the late 70s which is nearly impossible to find. The Strymon Brig or any analogue BBD stereo modulation can get you in the same ballpark though.
@@FletcherFathoms Thank you for all the info! I was thinking of picking up a Brig or the Mr Black ADT, alongside either the Amp1 or an Iridium and reuse a cabsim i have (and am a big fan of). We shall see.
@ oh yeah if you’ve got an external cab sim you like go for the Amp 1 I would say, that way you can gig through a cab as well. The Strymon Iridium is ace for recording as is the Laney Loud Pedal series. Mr. Black ADT is ace as well.
Out in Southern California .....sounding awesome! more!

what settings on the Brig would you recommend for the Geordie Walker type sound?
@@cactus-mcjacktus - there are quite a few in there, if you are aiming to get the ADT sound, set it to delay feedback and time minimum and modulation at about 10 o clock. This is almost like a chorus and it can sound shockingly close to the Electrolabs on the left most switch position. If you want delay tails, middle switch position, mod at 11 o clock time one o clock mix 2 or 3.
Good work. Is that a Gibson or the epiphone version? I would love one but they're costly.
Thank you so much. Icould never swing a Gibbo 295 either. There is one by Peerless/Epiphone that I have in other videos, but this is a Godin 5th Ave Limited Edition. They are Canadian made fully hollowbody archtops. The one with P-90s sounds and feels much like Geordie's - even more so than the Epi's in my opinion. And I have played Geordie's guitar ;)
Very nice, and quite moving to listen to on the anniversary of his passing

Great stuff Fletch ❤. Would love to hear it on the bridge pickup straight through mate; I always had an issue with our man Geordie switching to the middle/ neck pickups, (especially on the super-aggressive tracks, FOB/ Primitive etc), but that's probably just me. To my ear, more depth even with beautiful chords. But as I say, that's just me mate. Awesome! ♥
@@bufon63 hey hey matey. I know what you mean on most things, but I quite like the inside the boat tone of the two pickups on a full hollow body - ala Poison Ivy as well. ;) There was about 20 years though where it was strictly bridge P-90 for me. To the point where I played single pickup Reverends only. Still got em but my oldest needs new frets. X
@@FletcherFathoms Fletch, I get you too 🙃 just my ears like the 'attack' and violent beauty of the bridge pickup all the way. Keep 'em coming mate. Wish you'd do tutorials, would love to know how to play Primitive, can't figure it (and others) out and it/ they look quite straightforward. 🙄 Miss Anthony too mate. What another massive shock that was too. 😔
@ Anthony was ace - had many chats over the time I was working with Mont on the big book. Mont and I had just reconnected to work on his autobiography and he seemed in high spirits. Devastated by his loss as well and then on top of that my band, The Sub-Gents lost our best buddy Carl, who drove The Stranglers back in the day and later us. He never missed our bigger shows with Toyah, Electric 6 and Nightingales. I am pretty low about all of it as one would imagine. Feeling better a bit though. Regarding Primitive, make an E chord and use the pinky finger under it to cycle between fret 2 B-string and ftret 3 G string. At least that’s how I remember playing it. Always a little secret under his seemingly simple riffs. ;)
beautiful.

How do you feel the Mr Black Double Tracker compares to the original Bell Paice Doubletrackers used By Geordie Fletcher? Pretty Close ? Do you think you can pretty Much get close enough? Thanks, R
Hey hey Robert. It's a tricky question. The old analog ADTs certainly have more going on under the hood (a preamp which does colour the tone with a bit of high end roll-off) they also seem to have a phasing as well as detuning that is more extreme. The Mr Black sounds more Hi Fi and the spread, even at it's lowest is still slightly in the slap-back territory, so it doesn't do the more flangey side of Geordie's tone in the same way. To be honest, the closest in sound to the old ADTs that I have in my arsenal is the Strymon Brig as it models bucket brigade chips and has a lush modulation to it. All considered, I really dig the Mr Black and it certainly is more convenient to transport and integrate into a pedal board, plus you won't weep as hard if it got pinched haha.
Brother, make a full cover of "Big Buzz" instrumental... Those riffs are pure epic to listen to.. Would be interesting to listen this entire
That could be fun! I love Geordie's demos of Big Buzz. Proper one man orchestra. Here's a full cover of "Europe" I guested on guitar with Aus Goth legends IKON: ruclips.net/video/XtJrzYJEIPQ/видео.html
@FletcherFathoms myself as well.. and you played it with perfect effects, grip, and full of feeling... I was playing some parts of this song this week, but due my work routine, I have no time to take this song entire.. @@grimlyfiendish7474 ah cheers matey. My oldest influences are Rikk Agnew, East Bay Ray, Greg Sage, Dick Dale and Poison Ivy. X
@ hell of a list! You hit several of mine as well!
How’s the Mr. black stack up against the Bell Electrolabs?
@@dustinrieseberg8707 - the old analog units colour the tone in a rich and creamy sort of way and the modulation is a touch more complex as it phases as much as it detunes. The Mr. Black allows much more uncoloured dry tone to come through and therefore more hi Fi in a way. But it can get scarily close to the Bell when tweaked just right.
@@dustinrieseberg8707 the Mr. Black can be dialed to sound very close, however because it doesn’t have a preamp like the old ones, it allows more uncoloured dry signal to be dialed in and therefore sounds more hi-Fi. The Bell units are noisier due to being analog BBD devices and introduce creamy complex phasing/detuning they sound slightly thicker and richer. A good noise gate is built into my Amp 1, so the extraneous noise is a non-issue for me.
@@FletcherFathoms that’s great news. I’ve been hunting one of the Bell units for a decade now and have had zero luck. I bought the Mr. BLACK and really like it. I’ve been talking with Tony Koorlander about his new version that he swears will blow the old ones away. I’m sure you’re aware of Tony. Great guy and so cool to talk to the guy that created these amazing units.
