Girr Island Railway 6. The Buckland Pier branch.
Following the house move I've been replanning the track layout to see what works best within the limitations of a 17ft by 12 inch wide shelf layout. I've added a triangular section at the "Junction" end of the layout. This allows engines to run round their trains and some space for scenics, all without impacting on my work desk below. A similar setup is being looked at for the seaside terminus. Most trains are small, passenger is mostly push pull or railcar, and freight is a local pickup and parcels.

The new OO gauge Kernow O2 loco arrives at Girr Island.

Quick preview of the BR (SR) mainland push pull version of this loco on my work in progress shelf layout which is gradually being relaid following a recent house move. The loco will not disappoint, being beautifully finished , quiet running, responsive and a long sought after prototype by Southern fans.
Now that's class! The notorious class 16 arrives.

Anyone following my uploads may have noticed that I'm strangely drawn to the less common or successful types of early BR diesel traction. Well an exceptional offer came along that has turned my dream of owning a Class 16 into reality. My island railway having so far been the recipient of hydraulic classes 14 and 22, and now a diesel electric 16 with perhaps a 29 to follow. Like Scotland in BR's...
Girr Island Railway 5 - Relaid and back at work.

The initial laying of track on my shelf layout branch line was driven by over exuberance, and produced a cute but somewhat impractical layout. Having looked at some critical design aspects by masters such as Cyril Freezer and Paul Lunn - I decided that relaying the track in entirety was the only way of producing something far more interesting and functional. I would however recommend this rathe...
Girr Island Railway 3 - A new loco.

Having lusted after a Class 22 for some time, I took the plunge! What a beauty! This is the heavily weathered limited edition split headcode box version in green acquired from The Locoshed in Whitefield - thanks Jim! To offset all this investment in motive power, some economies have had to be made with rolling stock. The former Triang, later Hornby clerestory coach being one such. This still st...
Girr Island Railway 2. Summer steam excursion

The second upload, appropriately using ancient technology to present a 1950s view of a Summer excursion along the branch, and a Drewery 04 shunter pottering about. I really must commit to joining the digital age...
Girr Island Railway 1 - Diesel Dawn.
Просмотров 929 лет назад
My first effort with a low tech webcam, taking a brief look at my "In progress" OO scale shelf layout. Votes of encouragement/sympathy appreciated! Based on a fictitious island location during the transition period between steam and diesel on British Railways. Loosely based on BR (SR), but with a tendency to get offloaded with many of the unloved types of locos. Why do boring?

Some examples of models from my own fleets. Music is called Bart by US group Ruby - some of you youngsters may remember it from your school days in the 1970s?

Bit more of Paul Lunn on here, he's very good at "compressing" perspective. Next month's Hornby mag is about micro layouts - not 6x4 as I earlier thought. Should still be interesting. ruclips.net/video/5G43abl72SU/видео.html

Hiya Keith! Great to c the railway back up n running again! The trackplan appears very useable indeed! Very nice 121, jealous, and a lovely range of locos being used! It was a very enjoyable watch, wel done :)

Matthew Snowden Thanks Matthew, very happy with the outcome. Although where the (currently all cream) Camping Coach is, is too handy as a headshunt - camping will have to find a new location! Although I was raised in the steam/transition era, I do recognise the contribution made by diesels, and regret that some like the 22 never made it to preservation. The period on film would likely be realistic with only the Ivatt 2MT remaining by then.

Ohhhhhh, i can c me n u r going to get along :) firstly, wot a gorgeous new loco! They r beautiful and one that i want to own myself! U jav a nice green fleet growing! Not only do u like a small layout like me, bt ur stock is also up my street! Shunters, railcars, push pull services, SNAP :D i had a 14 a while back, but it blew, and then so did the 2 other replacements after that, so gud to c urs working wel! I may own one again one day? If ur into DIY push pulls, u mayb interested in watching my Scratchbuilt PCV vid? One of these wud work great on ur layout! Anyway, great work, and very much looking forward to ur next vid :) cheers

Hi Matthew thanks for your kind comments. I'm of an age where I remember BR steam, but that doesn't diminish my fondness for diesel traction - they did after all help save our railways. I do have a preference for green traction over the insipid rail blue. Sorry to hear about your exploding teddy bears - seemed a common fault with the early ones? The track is about to be completely relaid - having read some old Cyril Freezer articles. He reckons there's no problem with relaying things a couple of times with a new layout to get it working just right - I think I agree! I like to think of the layout as being the recipient of those unloved classes of BR diesels - hydraulics and railbuses so far, but with the massively discounted prices of "Baby Deltics" who knows what next? The Teddy Bears certainly worked well enough for the NCB so why not on my island railway?

I can vaguely rembr some of the last diesels to b used, so i dnt hav 'much' love for steam, bt some :) theres some diesels that look awful to me in blue/green, but then in the opposite colour just look right?! Yeh, i was gutted bout my Teddies, bt like u say it did seem an issue with them?! I heard a few similar stories! Ive not heard of the chap u mention regarding track laying? But i can c the logic in the method! If it gets the best out of ur locos then its surely a winner :) altho i dont think id want to b taking ballasted track up very often :D U hav been looking at that Baby Deltic as wel eh? Its caught my eye a few times, altho i think it was mor the cheap price that was appealing :) i wish i had got the Derby Lightweight wen that was discounted!!! U hav a lovely variety already so im sure most things cud b incorporated! Im eagerly awaiting the 05 :)

Matthew Snowden Class 22's seem generally to be a bit cheaper if you take the blue version. It looks fine although would be more realistic weathered. It's just that green is my personal preference for the layout era.

That was bloody excellent mate, loved it. You have got me thinking of doing a second layout now as a shelf version like yours - trouble is, finding the place to put a shelf layout without the missus finding out!! lol. The one thing which is definite is that I will get one of those gorgeous rail cars, I keep looking at them but that's all I do - this has made me realise how lovely they are. Great video mate and really enjoyed it. ...........Graham

Wow! Thanks for the lovely comment Graham. This is a L-o -n g- way off completion, but I hoped I'd been able to display things as they are so far. I must get a grip of the scenics in the next few weeks. The railbuses are a real joy - heavy, silent running and beautifully made. I think the AC Cars is my favourite...
