The opening scenes on the colony were amazing. Apart from the excellent anniversary shorts, we've never really seen the pov from the average person working for "the company". I would watch a movie or show set on a WY colony that didn't have any Aliens in it.

My theory is if death gives them the premonitions it's because it is a game for him death gets off to watching them try and avoid it but in the end death wins

Death sending the premonitions adds up strangely. Show the initial death, let them react. Then organize as needed for any taking "the bait." This is why sometimes the premonition happens literally a moment after everything has got speed and momentum or the point if no return being crossed. This happens at least twice(4 & 5 instantly comes to mind).

Another thing I noticed was that Kay appeared to be wearing a Catholic Mary pendant around her neck. Initially I really didn't like this because I thought it was just a preverse subversion of symbolism, but the ideas put forth in the video put it in a better context for me. Mary is the "New Eve" the mother of risen humanity, and Eve is seen as the mother of fallen humanity, so maybe the necklace isn't suggesting her to be Mary, but Eve. I still don't know if I like this use of this symbolism, but this does help put it in a better light than how I originally understood it.

While movies are art and we all interact with them differently I feel like Romulus had little in the way of actual symbolism described here. There are some elements like the big chap hanging like Jesus from a cross and the etymology of names but it felt like they were for the most part shoe horned in for the sake of it not actually trying to say something more about the themes or plot of the movie. But that’s just my take away and it was still interesting to hear the take away others had for the film and it was a fun watch all the same.

Jesse absolutely aggravated me. She weaseled her way into something, becoming other ppls responsibility & carried on being reckless giving no thought to those around her. Nothing aggravates me more than a person whose negative actions affect everyone but them.

The popular videos I searched for were pretty surface-level, leaving me feeling wow, I guess there really wasn’t that much else to The Black Phone besides what I picked up on by watching it. Then today RUclips recommended me this video, and thank God. I have a deeper appreciation for the symbolism and themes in the movie now. Thank you. Wonderful editing btw.

That death giving warnings to get people somewhere makes no sense. It seems more like expressing creativity and spicing things up for its own entertainment. That morgue guy is probably death in the flesh. Says I dont make the rules as a miss direct. Lol

I think that the Director Alex Garland probably took some of his Civil War FILM map of the USA from the KGB Analyst Igor Panarin (spellling) who in 1998 predicted that the USA would collapse and break into 6 regions; I think it was the west, south, north and east ; Hawaii would go to Japan or the PRC and Alaska would go to Russia; see the Atlantic magazine article from 2010 (it has a map of the six regions that the USA would allegedly break into. the map seems somewhat similar to what Garland did in the film; Apparently, the KGB analyst was not a fringe figure in the KGB but well regarded and was the Dean of the Soviet Foreign Ministry's league of future diplomats. However, if you simply read Niall Ferguson (UK historian on finance and collapse of empires globally over the past 4000 years); you can see that the USA is going bankrupt financially like the Soviet Empire and the Roman Empire and dozens of other empires over the past 4000 years. According to Ferguson, when the debt servicing (annual interest on an empire's national debt) exceeds its annual military budget then the collapse is pretty swift after that inflexion (spelling) point. Teen slasher movie that made a perfect organizm a stupid parody. ALIEN is no longer scary protagonist its a common inconveniance. What we really apparently want is more robots, black goo, and mutant babies.

There is a certain dream-like logic to the movie. Like if you were trapped in a dream, and despite everything you do, the dream conspires situations to keep you confined.

This was an awesome breakdown! I love these movies because they’re fun slasher flicks with a Scooby doo type vibe (who done it?) But I never realized how deep you could argue this franchise is. Also Scream is my favorite horror franchise as well and I’m sure that is the same for thousands of others.

Another point on the symbolism of water and rain - there are multiple moments throughout the movie where the xenomorph's acid blood raining down is a threat, either to the integrity of the ship or to the characters themselves. Most notably, when the asshole guy dies; he penetrates the alien's metamorphic womb with his weapon attempting to kill it (very subtle imagery there), but the alien proves that it can't be violated that way and that the very attempt makes it more dangerous. Its dripping blood is perhaps the biggest direct threat to Rain throughout the movie, because when the blood reaches the 'ground' - the very edge of the ship - it destroys everything. There's so much womb/birth imagery and symbolism in the movie, I find it so fascinating... The ship's system is MU/TH/UR and all the humans depend on her life support. The cryo pods are the wombs in which they'll be carried to new lives on Yvago, symbolism that's horrifically paid off when Kay births the twisted offspring within her cryo pod. The facehuggers are in trapped synthetic wombs for research, then the 'water breaks' and they're free to wreak reproductive havoc. The alien develops through a womb with a distinctly yonic exterior, and of course it has its classic phallic head. Andy is continuously reborn throughout the movie and only develops into his true self via connecting with and having his personhood acknowledged by his sister (thus defying the legend of Romulus' fratricide), then being placed in a cryo pod and promised rebirth into a new body... the first time he as an android would have ever BEEN in a 'womb'. I think Romulus does justice excellently to the sexual and birthing themes of the whole franchise, and far better than Prometheus did. Granted, it's been a minute since I saw that one, but it seriously left me cold lol. This one left me shaking with excitement.

It's no good what will happen on the far side of death if first you will experience the extreme horror of burning. It's no good calling out confidently to a God who won't or can't make you die instantly before that happens. As is one of the refutations of the extremist hell-believing versions of Christianity, there is no equivalence of horror at all between crucifixion and burning !
