    Those Classic / Sprint engines never quit, they’re even more reliable than the Quantum engines (if that’s possible!).

  • @mjg263
    @mjg263 3 дня назад

    The one thing I’d mention with primer bulb carbs is to visually check that it’s actually priming before you put the air filter in and button it up. Quantum primers often stop working once the gasket has been disturbed and it’s really important to get them working again before moving on.

  • @mjg263
    @mjg263 3 дня назад

    Yeah, definitely not worth all the trouble it caused but quite a journey nonetheless. I’ve got one now that’s putting me through the same torture: left out in the rain for years and worked on by some hack who snapped off some critical bolts, cracked intake pipe, sheared key, flywheel seized to the crank, parts from other engines bolted on (looks like they attempted to convert a primer carb to an auto choke style). Had I noticed all that before I bought it I would have walked away, but I’ll fix it at a loss and make it up on the next one. It’s what we do.

      @BackyardRepairs 4 дня назад

      I don't believe that stuff and change the oil anyway, I feel it's just a marketing gimmick. However, there was a study done by Briggs awhile back stating something to the effect that the oil is burned at a certain rate and if you continually top it off it will stay within spec.

    I have the same mower and was struggling with a non-start condition since the end of last season. I thought it might be the auto-choke because I ran into that a few years back and the symptoms were the same. Ordered replacement parts for the choke, and finally got around to trying to install them today. Still wouldn't start - I tried everything I could think of but I was exhausted from trying to pull start it over and over. Finally caved and pulled the recoil starter off and used a drill to crank it. I finally got it started but it was smoking like crazy. I shut it off because an amazon driver pulled in and I didn't want to smoke him out. Started again and it ran better - no more smoke. Put recoil back on, got it started, thinking I was going to mow, but as soon as I engage the blade, it bogs down and stalls. Even backfired on a few tries. I'm stumped on this one. I figure the hard starting is fuel related, but not sure why it would stall when the blade is engaged.

    • @BackyardRepairs
      @BackyardRepairs 14 дней назад

      Hey, based on your description there are three things I’d check next if you know you have good fuel, no carb issues (including correct gasket orientations), and spark.. 1- compression check 2- correct valve lash adjustment and 3- that the flywheel key isn’t sheared. The excessive smoking when you did get it running lead me to question the piston ring or cylinder health which could lead to low compression and the engine not being able to take the load from the blade clutch and stalling out. A bad valve adjustment and/or sheared flywheel key can both contribute to any combination of hard starting, loss of compression, and backfiring. Hopefully that helps!

    • @mgobluevictor
      @mgobluevictor 14 дней назад

      @@BackyardRepairs Thanks. I need to get a compression gauge to check that. The weird thing is that the smoking only happened after I initially “drill-started” it (this was bluish smoke which was concerning since it was likely burning oil). Once I shut it off and restarted it ran reasonably well - no smoke until I tried to engage the blade (then smoke was black and I got the backfires).

    Just for your info, that Snapper is the same as the John Deere JS25, both made over a decade ago. I know, because I just rescued a JS25 and I could see that the deck on your unit is the same, just red instead of green. Deere subbed it's walk-behinds back then to Murray which by that time had been acquired by Briggs. The Snapper brand name was also already owned by B&S. BTW, in case you want to retread those back bald tires (those are excellent ball-bearing wheels), here is a good video on a good way to do it. He used stair treads but I opted for the treads from mountain bike tires that I retrieved from the dumpster behind a local bike shop. Some 5 years later, they are still holding strong. ruclips.net/video/oDVMY2tJAyg/видео.html

    Backyard Repairs, you did a great job putting this beast back together, for someone with some but not Honda-dealer-mechanic experience. As an HRX217 (that STILL will not start) mower owner, this was hard to watch, because I've been through every temporary misstep you made here. Get one gasket, spring, bolt, etc. in the wrong order or place, and it will NOT start. One area you only touched on: the auto-choke on these engines is a HUGE general issue for Honda mower owners. Just check out other RUclips videos and owner comments; it wasn't your issue, but believe me, it's many others' issue. I suspect that what derailed the previous owner of your Honda mower is the #1 problem of non-starting lawnmowers generally (see Chickanic's RUclips videos): over-wintered, waterlogged, ethanol unleaded gasoline. In addition to my Honda, I also have a circa-2000 TroyBilt, basic Briggs & Stratton engine push mower that is lighter (=doesn't need self-propelled), more reliable, and way less complicated to maintain or service , compared to my Honda HRX217. Bleep you Consumer Reports for going all-in on the Honda. Give me the simpler circa-2000 Troy-Bilt.

      @BackyardRepairs 14 дней назад

      Thanks! And I’m inclined to agree after using this one most of the spring. Very good build quality and overall mower, but it does leave grass clumping when mulching tall stuff that cheaper mowers I’ve had in the past didn’t. A lot of hype on these guys

    I'm only 14 minutes in, and I don't want to forget again. On all the mowers I work on, I add a shut-off valve and a filter. It is only about $2 for the parts, and I add $10 to the price of the unit. With that, I always add $4 for a can of carb spray. The filter and valve is a great selling point. Letting the customer know to shut off and run out at the end of the season. That way, they won't need me next year. Does it cost me some business? Ya probably but I want them to come back knowing I want to fix it the first time.

      I'm gonna have to start adding at least a shutoff, especially on the briggs mowers I get (if not only to help prevent fuel spillage during carb cleanings). Great tip to highlight that as a selling point!

      I’m the same way and if they come back for more work great, if they don’t that’s fine too, I’m 73 & don’t care as long as I fixed it the right way 😊

      You're right and you should want the best for your customers even if you make a little bit less money on this one you'll make a lot more on the next hundred people

    My blower leaks gas behind carb when I prime it runs good till gas runs out carb I put new car and gaskets still does it look like it my leak from intake gasket what you think

      A couple things come to mind to check.. first double check the fuel lines are in good shape and are routed to the correct barbs from tank to the carb, then that the gasket is not upside down or the wrong style (main concern is that it's not blocking the small impulse port on the cylinder side of the carb). The impulse port being blocked will still allow you to purge, get fuel into the carb, have it run for a short amount of time, and then die because the engine's pulse is not pumping fuel into the carb. If all those are good then I would suspect the intake rubber isolator is not tight, torn, or otherwise not sealing correctly between the carb and the cylinder. Hopefully this helps out!
