Backyard Repairs
США
Добавлен 14 ноя 2023
This channel was started with the "let's try filming this, it might help someone out" mentality to share the repairs I do on (mostly) non-running discarded/neglected outdoor power equipment (and anything else I find interesting). No garage or fancy repair shop, I work out of my back yard and a small workbench in my basement while sharing as much information as I can along the way. I hope these repair videos help others gain the confidence to fix their own equipment and keep good equipment out of the landfill.
Please keep in mind:
- I do this in my free time, so the upload schedule may vary and/or be inconsistent based on project and time availability.
- I'm a hobbyist and am not a trained professional. The information shown in these videos is not intended to be used as formal instruction and/or a "How-To", but I try to show and explain as much of the process as I can. Please use all necessary safety precautions when attempting any repairs yourself.

Make Your Own DIY Rear Grass Flap Deflector for a Push Mower - Cheap & Easy - $5 and 15 Minutes
The cold chisel at the 4 minute mark looks like an Enderes tool co. A9 1" chisel. If so, it's probably made in the USA.
Just subscribed. Thanks for the video. Like to see more hauls.
Would like to see some quantum series briggs and stratton engines be worked on. any yardman or yard machine mowers you can review aswell!
Those craftsman ratcheting wrench with the plastic always seem to break off the plastic.
Those craftsman midget/ignition wrenche sets are at least 20-40 bucks. Those big adjustable craftsman pliers are about 30 bucks. Each one of those craftsman ratchets are 15-30 bucks. Those craftsman sockets are 2-4 bucks each,. You might do yourself a favor and get some socket rails for those sockets, harbor freight they have some cheap spring steal ones. You got your 70 bucks worth.
Companion was Sears lower than low end Craftsman brand.
Bench Top was a KMart brand.
WOW, I think you got your $75 worth and then some
So a few opinions: I would have cleaned and pressure washed the $@#$%@#$%@ out of that. Cleanliness is next to: Honda has no competition. Longest lasting mowers in modern times. Lawnboy used to be the King but STUPID TORO bought Lawnboy and destroyed brand. You now have a mower which will last INDEFINITELY with preventive maintenance and Amsoil 10w30 Small Engine - I get ZERO from Amsoil. Not fair right?
Nice haul, great presentation, love the double V am working on completing my collection.
The second thing is a lawnmower blade Balancer
Nice Tool haul. It's always interesting to see what is out there.
Screwdriver at 4:56, VA is Vermont American. I like that Indestro hammer.
Pretty sure the Craftsman “G” is mid 90’s still made in USA.
It would be cool to see it run again but I'm sure it's not worth it 😂
The YANKEE driver is the gem of everything! Nice finds
Unlock the stanley 131A it's actually 25 inches long. Nice haul.
I've gotten so many different sets, bundles, random pick ups. I would probably laugh if I did this and organized everything looking at all the different brands of random crap I have. I know I have some random Snap-On and Mac stuff I picked up for cheap at yardsales and things. Lots of Craftsman and whatever store brand different stuff I picked up ha. Fun video! Always neat to see this kinda stuff
nice haul. can't beat the price
TOOLS, TOOLS, TOOLS! Who doesn't like tools? Great haul.
Great video!
Excellent little tool haul for sure.. Here in the UK almost every thing is metric. I have very few BA or imperial sockets in my collection.. Thanks for the video...
Love the tool hauls! Would love to see a toolbox tour too.
WOW that's great!
These good old sears craftsman blowers are DEFINITELY much better than new ones out and will outlast any today’s craftsman blower today. Excellent work!
So the lesson here is, don’t buy a Snapper.
Had to bring mine to the local shop for adjustment right out of the box. Specialty tool of course . Im guess alot of these units get returned.
Too funny - I just picked up a compressor for pennies on the dollar that's doing the exact same thing. Never worked on one before, but a friend told me it would probably be either reed(s) or gasket. Just haven't had time to tear into it. Thanks for the vid! Fun fact: I was talking to someone about this issue a few days ago, with my phone on my hip of course, and abracadabra-whim-wham-blam! here's a video in my recommended feed. Yes folks, our tech is listening to us, 24/7.
Very well done. I will have to get a screwdriver without flanges to take the main jet out and a few wires to clean out the emulsion tube. Should be able to take out the idle screw with regular Phillips. Will carefully watch the sequence of the gaskets. One question someone hit a small stump and bent one end of the blade. I’ve bought a new one but how do you check if the crankshaft is okay. Thank you very much for your video as it is a big help!!
thanks for commenting! There's a couple ways to check for a bad crank, but if you have a brand new (straight) blade I think I would just install it and spin the blade around with a marked reference point on the deck. If the two blade ends land on the same reference spot when rotating you should be ok. You'll want to make sure your spark plug boot is unplugged while you do this for safety tho.
Would you mind posting where you were able to locate parts for this saw? Specifically I am looking for a carb kit and possibly a cylinder, piston set. I enjoyed your video, thanks for posting.
Thanks for commenting. I sourced parts through a mix of Amazon and eBay searching part numbers from the parts diagram I found online for this model. You should be able to look up the carb kit without that diagram using the numbers cast into the carburetor body, and plugging that in the Walbro website to make sure you get the right kit.
That was a great video! You are a tremendous craftsman and loved your cameral angles and audio too, great show.
You do very good job thanks
Good job.
🇦🇺🦘one off your better videos For giggles I would soak the piston & rings and hone the head. And bench start it without the plastics and carburettor
I admire your patience,, 180° from me😂😆
Definitely save what you can. If there is ever a hand held blower that is worth fixing, it would be a Redmax. Those parts will come in handy later.
The fact that this mower is made in China, indicate that the mower could go bad in their time. You have to also be careful what you buy nowadays because eventually, if it says made in China, then chances right it’s not going to last anywhere close to 5 or 10 years at a maximum, meaning that it could permanently quit working in no time. Plus, there’s a lot of things to even go wrong with any China pride mower. So that’s the concept of you get what you pay for. Since 2015, I even avoided dime-store lawn equipment for that matter. And Toro and Honda are the last quality brands to buy though they can be pricey.
They sure are proud of that model number.
I hate dealing with Chinese engines. I fix and flip small engine stuff much like you do. So far, I have only owned two machines with Chinese engines. So far, I have only come across two machines with inner engine issues. Guess which two they were.
What causes the oil to get in the top end like that?
Thanks for commenting. It could be a variety of things but based on the condition of the oil on this machine, my opinion is the rings or the cylinder were worn out or the cylinder was scored enough to allow oil to creep past while it sat
That mower visually looks cheap. I would rather buy an old used than pay a new mower price for something that cheap looking.
I recently picked up a 2021 model Toro out of the trash. I doesn't appear to have many hours on it, but I guess someone ran over it or something. The front right wheel and dust guard is missing, and the height selector is damaged. The rear right wheel and attachment plate are also damaged, and the bail was missing. The deck doesn't appear to be damaged at all. It's weird. Other than those issues, it is in really good condition. I got it running and the self propel works, so I am debating about whether I want to fix it or not. I have a Craftsman mower that needs an engine, so I can't really make up my mind. The mower brings enough money that I could fix it and still make a little bit on it, or keep it for myself. It's a tough decision.
Not sure about your area, but I think a Toro would sell better than a Craftsman around me. But that would be the 22” Toros with personal pace, the MTD build like this would be a toss up. My 2 cents.. I will usually decide to fix a piece of equipment if the parts are no more than 3/4 of what I could potentially sell it for. That or if I like it and want to keep it to use for a while lol, but I’ve been bit by that mentality before tho. I just like to keep original equipment together if I can help it and it makes sense
Thanks for scraping the underside out. It was really bothering me. I recently got a really nice mower out of the trash that appeared to have a locked up engine. The only thing wrong with it was a ton of grass buildup on the underside of the deck. It was so thick that it was preventing the blade from turning. I cleaned it and it started right up. That was easy money. I am a firm believer in scraping them out now.
I don't know how much these bring in your area, but they bring about $50 to $60 in my area. You won't be able to make any money off of it if you fix everything that is wrong with it.
You’re probably spot on with the 50$ mark if it was in good cosmetic and functional shape. With all plastic damage on this one, I wouldn’t have felt good selling it and ended up giving it away to a neighbor that knew the situation with it
I love saving old machines, but this is one I probably wouldn't have messed with. The margins on edgers are too small to mess with one that is missing parts and has multiple issues. I don't mess with them if they need more than a fuel line or a carb clean, unless I have a parts machine. I am very picky about what I sell. I only sell machines that are 100% complete and functional.
You can just stick a screwdriver or a pick in one of the holes on the recoil once you wind it up. It will hold it in place for you while you tie your knot.
Nice fine good fix I have two of them I found one in town guy City you know what was wrong with it I started up and ran good the first one I paid almost 700 bucks worth
Awesome trash day find and super cheap fix
wish i wasn't late seeing this video but i have the same machine as yours and the oem carb is a Zama carb
You haven't worked on many of these small Homlites, have you ? You were doing almost everything the hard way --- I worked in a saw shop in the 1990's and did hundreds and hundreds of small Homlites, Poulan, Craftsman, McCulloch saws (the cheapo homeowner type saws) ---- also every other kind of saw --- Stihl, Husky, Echo, Jonserends, etc, etc ---- You just love pulling the starting rope, don't you ? Properly adjusted carbs start pretty easily and don't take All Day to service up and move to another saw ---- you eventually learn to fix them quickly -- :)
