Not talking about random people who dislike the UK for various reasons. Some people dislike China for various reasons. Some people dislike Egypt for various reasons. Knowing two or three people from certain regions (if you really do know them) who dislike the United Kingdom doesn't validate that the whole country hates the UK.

As an American from Hong Kong, I don't think a lot of people hate Britain, with the exception of people from Argentina due to propaganda.

But that counter-argument makes no sense as it simply restates your first comment without any regard to anything I have just said. My argument, clear and simple is: Hong Kongers shouldn't be called Chinese for adopting a language developed thousands of years ago. Scots and Welsh don't refer to themselves as English, even though their culture, language, and government come from England.

Hong Kong is a territory, if not less than one. Puerto Ricans don't call themselves Americans even though they "technically" are, neither do Guamanians. In the same way HKers wish not for poeple to refer to them as Chinese. Even with countries, Scots aren't referred to as English, even though they adopt the English language and cultures such as tea time and football. Why should Hong Kongers have to identify themselves as Chinese, because we adopted a language developed thousands of years ago?

American is a nationality same as British

Yes, it originated in China a couple thousand years ago. I guess Americans should refer to themselves as British since the English language originated in Britain or Colombians calling themselves Spaniards.

Mainland China is trying to turn China into what outsiders have always thought China was: one huge homogeneous nation where everyone look the same, speak the same language, no diversity other than the landscape. It is no secret that the mainland is trying to replace Cantonese with Mandarin and the Brits never interfered with Hong Kong's education system.

I doubt there being any possibility whatsoever. I believe that Hong Kong will be fully integrated into China later on...so the question of Commonwealth status is somewhat improbable.

Our family wishes to get HK passports. We would happily have done so if HK was a country. However, we do not trust China and therefore do not wish to take up HK Chinese citizenship.

Well, China is there in HK to stay cos Britain promised in 1984 treaty never to go back. No more British in HK just Chinese sovereignty where popular schemes stopped . No more "Save the Queen" instead children learnt to sing Chinese national Anthem while rising Chinese flags in schools. it seems to me that China won final battle against us!!!!

it was Britain that fucked up and bankrupt china 100 years ago by selling and getting them addicted to opium. The Chinese and fought back but were no match for their technology back then, thus thats how they lost Hong Kong to the Brits. This is no different from Britain robbing and exploiting the rest of the world. If it wasn't for Britain bringing China down to its knees, there wouldn't be a communist revolution.
