Automating a Yaesu G450A antenna rotator
A project I've been working on is to take a Yaesu G450 rotator and make it usable on my network so I can point my antenna from within my logger over the network.
This was a demo video I sent to my club's maker group. The software has been improved since so that I can click on the heading in my logger and the antenna moves to that position.
Still some kinks to work out in the calibration of the heading and when I get past 360 degrees, which are related.

Yaesu FT-890 FT8 data in:out and CAT control
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.4 года назад
I started my Ham radio hobby with a Yaesu FT-890 radio which is fairly old, so needed to make some custom cables to do digital modes like FT8. I also wanted CAT control so my computer could set and get the band/frequency/power/etc. After buying a cable off of eBay that didn't work, I returned it and built my own for under $5 in parts.
Kenwood TM 281a data connection for APRS/Winlink

I have a Kenwood TM-281a 2m radio and wanted to try APRS and Winlink, but there's no cable to hook it to the computer. This video describes a simple wire harness I soldered to the inside of the radio and a relay circuit to control Push to Talk (PTT) from a Raspberry pi. After that, APRS and Winlink work great!

Installing the Si-Tech Oval Rings on a DUI TLS-350 (trilaminate) drysuit. The main obstacle was that the sleeves of my drysuit were too tight to fit the ring. The oval rings need to be mounted inside the sleeve, where the round rings have some more options. Fortunately my sleeves were too long in the first place and if I shortened them to the recommended 3/4" below the wrist, I was able to snug...

Sean, just ran across your page, I also have a Ft-890 as my primary rig. my old setup that used to work, was using the usb cat cable to connect rig and computer, and with a usb sound card that i can connect input and out put directly to internal speaker and imput/output on back of radio. Now since i restarted using radio again, of course not working. ft8 trnsmit, radio keys, but meter goes to 0. did nudge mic and noticed meter move. Not sure how to fixafterplaying with all possible sound card choices. Do u use Codec for your radio?

Hi Scott, my sound card showed up as "USB Audio Device". It's been a while, but I think I took a pair of headphones and some alligator clips to debug the cable by probing for sound and to make sure I got all the pins right. Hope that helps. 73!

No passive components required for the audio interfacing? How do the voltages work between the mic input on the radio and the USB interface out? And then the DTMF IN pin (radio out) to the USB microphone in? Did you do any testing to check audio levels?

    • @SeanWalberg
      @SeanWalberg Год назад

Correct, it's just wires for the audio, the only components used are for the PTT relay. I didn't check any voltages, but since I'm just picking up the wires where they'd normally go to a speaker or the handheld mic, it should interface correctly with the TRRS connection to the USB sound card. I did tune audio levels on the Pi itself, and was able to adjust the gains so where Direwolf was happy. I've been doing the weekly Winlink Wednesdays on this for about 2 years now, plus APRS once in a while -- it's been solid.

Nice tutorial. Thanks for your help. Just one quick question: if you set it for Air Diving mode does the computer automatically understand that you are using 21% O2 and 79% Nitrox? as the normal air mixture? Or should I set it on Nitrox Diving mode and then put 21% Nitrox? I'm a new Open Water Diviner and want to buy a Suunto but want to make sure that is easy to understand and to use. Thanks for your response :)

    • @SeanWalberg

Hi Rodrigo, yes if you dive air it knows it's regular 21% air. I have another video about how to use the Nitrox mode on this watch, mostly as a reminder to myself because I know I'd forget :) . But no need to play with those settings until you're diving something richer than 21%. It's a good watch, I'd still recommend it.

Not sure why google suggested me this video since i was searching for TM271 stuff.... Anyway, I got interested in the TM281 and put both their schematics side by side. They are both very similar, however they stripped of ell the packet radio stuff on the 281. In the 281 you can get filtered audio (deemphasized audio) right after C783 which might be more suitable for 1200bps packet.

Hi Sean, I bought this computer (my first one) because of the large display and as the regular Zoop was so easy to use. But I was a bit disappointed in the beginning. - I totally agree that the manual is not very good (actually quite bad especially in comparison with the old Zoop one) and Suunto should improve it asap. - I think the buttons are a bit hard to push, especially with the protectorscreen so I took it off as well. - And I think the userinterface is not always very logical - and without a manual - this can be quite annoying. But after a while I got more familiar with it and now it’s okay for me. I would like to download the data to my pc as well but I agree that the cable is much too expensive. So where did you buy that cable? Rgds, Peter
