[Bits #22] 3GHz Signal Generator Troubleshoot and Repair (No Output) on an Agilent E4432B
In this video, I repair a signal generator (Agilent E4432B) that was known to be broken. There is no output on either the RF or LF connectors. I go through the steps of checking for symptoms, looking through the block diagrams, then hunting around on the main board. In total, the debug took about 12 hours, spread across a 4 or 5 evenings. The most frustrating part of the troubleshooting stems from the intermittent nature of the fault.
The audio is not good during the screen recording when I go through the service guide and block diagrams, so turn your volume up and bear with me for the segment. This just proves how terrible consumer headsets mics are. I won't record with that again, I pro...

[Bytes #2-5] DIY Bluetooth MIDI Accordion
Просмотров 8 тыс.4 года назад
Finishing up the MIDI accordion, and making it wireless as well! The system design isn't difficult, but this project still took many hours. The wiring is very repetitive and an accidental shorts can be at any of the 300 points where wires cross. I did design a circuit board to make things easier, but none of that is being manufactured with covid raging. Code can be found here: github.com/Electr...
[Bits #21] David Clark ANR/ENC Headset Teardown, How Noise Reduction Works, Cable Rerouting
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.5 лет назад
This video shows a pair of "for parts" ebay'd David Clark headphones torn down to see how the ANR works. A partial reverse engineer was done on the ANR module. I re-string the connector cable and spend lots of time on attaching new connectors. In total, I spent ~1 week on and off on this project. The schematic I ended up with is incomplete. Because of the sticker in the thumbnail, I couldn't fi...
[Bits #20] The KNIGHT Audio and RF Generator - Some History, Schematics, and Operation of the KG-650
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.5 лет назад
I picked up this two-tube RF generator in an "unknown" condition because it was only $5, and because it came with a paper schematic. Having the schematic was handy, because I also bought a spare NOS 6C4 tube that turned out to be a fantastic decision. The one in the generator didn't work. The other tube in the generator worked fine. Got lucky, I guess. I did a bit of an investigation of this ge...

If you want to skip the intro, start somewhere around 2:05 Results and the process for testing three 6au6 tubes for shorts, leakage, transconductance, and life are recorded here. Also tested a 5u4gb rectifier tube, and several 6L6's (one was bad). The Hickok 539B and 539C models are used. I didn't attempt to explain how tubes work. The video where I went through the manual will be uploaded in t...

    3:40 I'm politely disagreeing with your hypothesis that the slightly leaky bellows require more air to go through the faster vibrating higher reeds, causing the low end to be comparatively louder. On a physics level, lower frequencies require more energy to make, whether it's flute versus tuba or violin versus doublebass or whatever. In an accordion, the lower reeds have bigger air gaps between the reed and reed plate, whereas in the very high end the gaps get so small that a reed valve isn't even needed. That being said, it may be possible that the lower notes only seem louder to you because their pallet/valve openings are closer to your ears, whereas the volume might sound equal from directly in front of you.

    Your black touchpad is a prototype. Lucky you, these are very rare! I stepped through frame by frame and wasn't able to decipher the engraving on the back, would it be possible to get a picture of it that way I can add it to the docs. The calc itself is not a prototype (hardware-wise) but it might have been used for software dev. If you haven't updated the OS, you should check what version its running. It isn't being validated with dev keys so the odds are pretty slim but its still worth checking just in case.

    What is the use of 9v battery out there. Does it work on battery without electricity?

    • @stevepettersen3283
      @stevepettersen3283 2 месяца назад

      The 9 volt battery is a back up during a power interruption/outage. It maintains the current time and programming (alarm time) HOWEVER if the AC power is still off when the alarm is set to go off it will not sound until AC power is restored. For that reason I bought a little battery powered travel alarm clock as a back up to the first one. It has saved my butt a handful of times when the power was out or I forgot to set the clock-radio.

    Excellent!! Your doing the Lord's work Kid!! Hang in there. I wish there were more young people with this level of wanting to know. Now old people (like myself) have lost that spark. I just tune the loop at low power with a small variable cap, take it loose and measure the capitance, them look in the junk box and find a fixed 50,000Kva that is the same and solder that in. I only need about 100khz to work the CW bands and won't need tuning after setup.

    Do you know which pin corresponds to the "," (ie comma) key? My daughter's comma key doesn't work despite me attempting to clean that key (looks like coffee was spilled near that edge). Probably the actual button contact is deteriorated, but I couldn't disassemble more than I did. I think the social button was sealed if I recall correctly.

  • @TheRainHarvester
    @TheRainHarvester 2 года назад

    Maybe you could shove a bit of rubber so the pins connect better?

    • @TheRainHarvester
      @TheRainHarvester 2 года назад

      Or, last resort, put some flux on the pins and a little solder to increase the pin's metal. This would be tricky to keep a consistent height across all pins. So a pin might be too low and not contact compared to the other pins.

      I just checked, with the cap fully closed, the needle should point all the way to the left, lining up with the bottommost tick mark below 160KC. With the cap fully open, it points to the opposite end of the dial.
