    Fictional characters are like a mirror, they reflect what you project onto them. People who see darkness in Will are just as bad and violent as their fantasies dictate. I personally fail to see any evil in Will becuase sure, morality gets in my way, lol. Yeah I agree with what you used to think, completely disagree with this analysis. Will is good he's Hannibal's victim, period. "Morality gets in the way" is an idea only people who have those psychopathic / violent tendencies could possibly entertain. This fandom loves to claim we're all dark in some way, like Hannibal keeps telling Will to accept his 'true self', which is just a twisted shadow Hannibal sees in him; Hannibal broke him down and made him into an ideal 'friend'. Hannibal is a delusional psychopath who is cruel for amusement's sake, and he does this to Will becuase he's needy, lonely, pathetic. The obsessive abuse might have an erotic undertone, that doesn't make it less despicable. But admittedly it can be affirming to think that Will deserves it. "a primal rejection of weakness, which is every bit as natural as the nurturing instinct" -Bedelia. If you think of crushing an injured bird as anything but incredibly cruel and despicable, then it's no surprise you see a psychopath in Will.

    • @Cassvrnt
      @Cassvrnt Месяц назад

      @streaklight Okay, Alana Bloom (I'm joking). You know, it's a very interesting topic! What I tried to convey is that Will's role is not solely that of a victim. His character embodies complexities and agency that reflect his choices and responses to situations, making him more than just a passive observer. Failing to acknowledge said complexities undermines his depth and development as a character. Morality getting in the way isn't always clear-cut. People can do 'good' while grappling with darker thoughts or impulses we can't see or possibly know, so we can't assume. These traits can coexist within a character and allows for a deeper exploration of what it means to be human-flawed, yet striving for 'good' (or 'bad'), but capable of both light and shadow. Darkness itself represents the internal struggle and the potential for both 'good' and 'bad' choices in its ambiguity. Goodness is not the absence of darkness, but often the result of a conscious choice to rise above it. To be your 'true self', you don't necessarily have to pick one. Also, to clarify my point: darkness isn't inherently 'evil', it simply represents the aspects of humanity that are not 'purely good'. Rejection of weakness and nurturing can coexist within an individual or society, but they may pull in different directions. For example, a parent might have a primal instinct to toughen up their child to prepare them for the harsh realities of life (a rejection of weakness), while also feeling a strong urge to protect, comfort, and nurture them just the same. Cruelty. Will's actions blur the lines between justice and cruelty. The killing in 'self-defense' (furry guy) raises questions about the nature of Will's actions and whether the killing was an unavoidable necessity or a reflection of his own growing darkness + his decision to displays the man's corpse (prisoner who ate Mischa) reveals his own capacity for 'violence' and darkness too. To what extent does Hannibal's manipulation influence to our 'good' Will? He wasn’t there with him at the moment he made the choice. Crushing an injured bird (taking the phrase quite literally) often depend on personal beliefs, ethical frameworks, and societal standards. It can also be seen as an act of mercy. In a culture without veterinarians or people to care for the bird's healing, the choice might be driven by practicality rather than cruelty. Where do you draw the line? When is it merely "convenient" or "socially acceptable/unacceptable"? If a child does it without knowing any better, and later learns it’s wrong and never does it again, is he still considered a psycho? Is he a reformed psychopath?

    • @streaklight
      @streaklight Месяц назад

      @@Cassvrnt Nope. If anyone took away Will’s agency it’s Hannibal. He isolated Will from everyone and everything that could possibly have any meaning in his life. To see this manipulation as anything less the abhorrent i.e., buying into Hannibal’s twisted idea of “help” and “love” just reflects one’s own malevolent tendencies. Will was actually opposed to Alana’s “facilitating torture and death” to Hannibal. He still wanted legal justice and then gave up trying to catch him, tried to distance himself from Hannibal, until Hannibal went after his family, only then did he seek revenge / justice by outlaw means. Yea he went back to Hannibal for the red dragon case, in the same way IPV victims struggle with divorce because their sense of self has been completely destroyed and they can’t live without the violent partner. This fandom’s romanticizing / justifying abuse as tough love is very unsettling. What Will did with Randall was just an act to win Hannibal’s trust. What he said to Jack about “a fledgling killer” he said it in front of Hannibal. What Will felt when killing Hobbs is what good people are supposed to feel - righteous. And killing psychopathic murderers - red dragon, Hannibal, is beautiful in that sense. Will might be “not purely good”, i.e., violent when it’s righteous, but that’s not what Hannibal wants with him. Hannibal (and most in this fandom) believes he’s helping Will become his true psychopathic killer self, so he (they) won’t be alone in finding morality a nuisance. Good point on the bird. Imo Hannibal just never grew out of the torture-animals-to-see-what-would-happen kid stage. Your analysis makes sense from a hannigram perspective and if you project/ empathize with the idea of inherent darkness. For me I empathize with the traumatized abuse victim persevering in what’s right and making the best of the hand he’s been dealt, that doesn’t make my reading of the character any less deep and complex.

    • @Cassvrnt
      @Cassvrnt Месяц назад

      @streaklight There's still some agency despite the influence of Hannibal. I’m not saying it’s 100% Will's doing alone; he has gone through a lot, including incarceration. He actively pursued Hannibal, choosing 'revenge'/'justice'... yes, clearly there’s still Will Graham persevering in his actions and decisions-not just a brainwashed or manipulated version of him. It’s not about labeling Will as purely 'good' or 'bad'.' Instead, we must recognize that he operates in a morally grey area. This complexity enriches his character and invites us to reflect on our own perceptions of morality. He grapples with his darker impulses while striving to uphold his moral compass, demonstrating that 'good' and 'bad' can coexist within a single individual. His actions, while influenced by external factors, are *STILL* his own and carry weight in the moral landscape of the narrative (moral ambiguity plays an important role in the serie). It seems you might be overlooking this, which I find to be a rather personal judgment/appreciation. Let’s not forget that he willingly participated in the cover-up of Abigail's murder. Something as a crime can be changed at his discretion. His resolve falters when emotions or feelings are involved, like any other flawed human would (not excusable either). He could have simply done 'what's right' and allowed justice and the law to take their course as in society dictates: trial, sentence, and so on. Ultimately, the act of taking a life, regardless of the circumstances, carries significant moral weight. People might justify it because Hobbs was a killer, which implies that violence can be seen as 'justified' or 'deserved' in certain contexts, especially against those deemed 'evil' (psychopathic murderers. They killed, they deserve to die for it, right?). However, that doesn’t equate to righteousness. "It's a life nevertheless." Does it make you better than a killer? A righteous killer-as if doing it for 'the right reasons' somehow makes it acceptable. Choices. While in prison, he sent Brown to kill Hannibal, even though he could have chosen not to engage with another killer or involve himself in a crime. He could have done the 'right thing' by confessing to Alana, but he chose not to. His call. He set Hannibal up with Mason, but when the moment came for them to harm him, he freed him. That's no agency? Will isn't a child; he definitely knows better but chooses not to, each time. He was about to be taken in custody for Randall's kill and mutilation, he decided to escape and warn Hannibal, literally ruining their plan to catch him, giving an opening to escape too (besides the fact that Hannibal knew or was prepared for it). All efforts for nothing. Does he truly seek justice, revenge, or is he driven by something else entirely? His own amusement? He has gone too far to be dismissed as merely a twisted shadow of Hannibal’s delusional ideas or a victim persevering in 'what's right' and making 'the best' of the hand he's been dealt. Is he a psychopath? Maybe. Is his 'true self' solely psychopathic, then? Not necessarily. Perhaps there’s no specific term for him. He’s simply Will Graham-complex and multifaceted.

    • @streaklight
      @streaklight Месяц назад

      @@Cassvrnt Tired of people trying to assimilate Will's "morally grey" actions to Hannibal's evil deeds; they're completely separate matters. Will's killing murderers, covering up for Abigail whom he loved, and freeing Hannibal in front of Mason are prime examples of a good person doing the right thing. He grapples with his fantasy to kill Hannibal- self-defense against Randall was smth of an outlet- he fights his impulse to be righteously violent up until the very end, until Hannibal went after his family. "They know." Will called Hannibal becuase he wanted Hannibal to run without killing Jack, because at that point FBI intervened and Will and Jack's plan had already failed. The least he could do was save Jack's life. And then, "Becuase he was my friend, because I wanted to run away with him". Will is grieving Abigail, he'd give anything to get her back, even if it means negating his entire value system- "the wrong thing being the right thing to do was too ugly a thought"- until he lets go of Abigail at the end of Primavera "it was the only place I could make for you". All this spells Stockholm Syndrome, Will definitely checks all the boxes: Perceived threat to survival Showing of kindness from a captor Isolation from other perspectives Perceived inability to escape Also what I said about IPV victims, suppose a divorce cost their child (physically emotionally), would they wish they hadn't left the abusive partner just to save their child? It's only when Will lets Abigail go, 'forgives' Hannibal, could he continue the elaborate chase to bring Hannibal to justice- to justice, not to Mason's lot. He still wants to do the right thing. In fact s2-first half of s3 was Will trying and failing at it, becuase NO ONE BELIEVED HIM, Hannibal is too cunning to be caught through official means. imo all of Will's actions are justifiably motivated by justice / revenge, there's no inclination toward the darkness Hannibal (and fannibals) see in him. Or, he fights this inclination. Hugh describes their relationship as "inescapable love" which I think is rather telling. I disagree with your definition of moral grayness. imo it is comparable to Hannibal defining rudeness as unspeakably ugly. It bends morality in a hypocritical, self-serving way. Hannibal (and fannibals) are eager to see that they're alike and that Will deserves the becoming Hannibal forces on him, then ofc you define moral grayness in such a way that Will's actions fall within it. If we lived in utopia where there's no death sentence and acting in excessive self-defense is very punishable, then yes, Will is morally gray, but he is still good, imo. It's a work of art, there is no wrong interpretation. s3 was heavily influenced by fanservice as well. These are valid points you're making here. Clearly we have different perspectives and values, so I'm open to agreeing to disagree. Thanks anyway for the thoughtful discussion.

    This is a fascinating analysis and so apt, given the show's devotion to aesthetics. I saw Hannibal's perfectly tailored and crisp suits as a perfect extension of his "true" self. The monster yearns to be seen. He considers himself above humankind, eating the rude, every life expendable (except one) to satiate his desires and sense of control. The tailored suit, with its connotations of power, control, elegance and wisdom, presents the ideal man. It's not a mask of his 'vulgarity' or brutality, it a socially acceptable display of his remarkable being, the closest any living person will come to knowing and seeing Hannibal Lector

    I hadn’t connected that (in s1-2) Hannibal tends to wear his most laid back outfits in the kitchen, where he’s being most himself. It also made me think of his clear killing suit, it’s also a time he’s being entirely himself so it fits that it’s transparent; not hiding anything. Cool vid! I love to see Hannibal nbc being analyzed in 2024!

      Hey! Thank you. ❤️‍🩹 I think Hannibal was being himself by killing, but he kept worrying about things of "little importance" (his well tailored person suit) that made him fall into a monotony, the feeling of emptiness (that he wasn't 100% him). What brought him back was meeting Will, a partner to share his "hobbies" with. Like when you believe you're fine until you meet someone who drastically changes your world and makes you think "Oh, I was missing THIS". But well, we're only speculating.
