Backpacking Great Smoky Mountain National Park - Cosby 3 Day Loop
This Spring (March 29-31), I spent 3 days casually backpacking the Cosby Loop in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The loop was just over 20 miles long and featured highlights such as Hem Wallow Falls, Albrights Grove, and Maddron Bald. The trail combined Gabes Mountain Trail, Maddron Bald Trail, and Snake Den Mountain Trail to create the loop.

Backpacking 3 days in Savage Gulf State Natural Area, Tennessee
Просмотров 84Месяц назад
In mid February of 2024, Kenzie and I spent 3 days backpacking at Savage Gulf State Park/Natural area in East Central Tennessee. We hiked a loop starting at East Ranger Station Trailhead and experienced hot sunny weather, and cold snowy weather all in the same trip. I've been trying to make these videos a little more immersive and experimenting with that format. Let me know what you think! Back...

Part 1: Cycling from Lawrence to Manhattan via the Kansas River Corridor

The Kansas River Corridor Multi-Sport Loop is a cycling and kayaking loop that utilizes Kansas's many public backroads/streamway trails and the National Scenic River Trail which is the Kansas River itself. This is not an official loop by any means (I made it on my computer) and the cycling portion can be easily altered to fit your fancy. My intent when creating this route was to create a, "Back...
Backpacking Four Pass Loop in October/Fall (Snowy Conditions) *Attempt*

An attempt of four pass loop in 1-2 ft of snow. It's worth noting that I'd called the ranger the day before we left asking about the conditions after the storm. He'd claimed that there was probably only a couple inches of snow up on the pass but since he was not actively stationed in the Maroon Bells Wilderness he did not know the true extent of the snow. Ended up being about waist deep snow up...

      I've heard those other rail trails are amazing and I'm sure you'd absolutely love them. I'd love to cycle them someday as well. However, I also think you would be pleasantly surprised by the Katy Trail - especially everything east of Booneville. Though I cycled it in winter, that is definitely far from the optimal time and in the right season I think you'd love it!

    I actually just received my springbar classic jack 100 and I’m excited to get it out and go camping. I looked at a lot of tents and I never heard of springbar until a couple months ago and watched a lot of reviews on them and everyone loved them. I never heard one bad review about them so I bought it. Customer service told me you don’t have to seal them that a light rain or a morning dew will do the same thing.

    How has mankind affected the evolution of species? One possible way is the fact that through the history of mankind man had been a hunter. The hunter that seeks the largest bear, the largest alligator, the largest fish and also the largest of the trees. This selective killing of certain species has had an effect. My question is how big would these species have become if man had not impacted natural selection? After all in the times before man was around numerous species were huge. Huge bears, huge dinosaurs, huge insects and also huge trees.

      Unfortunately, we did not ever find the tree. It may have fallen or succumb to the blight since the guidebook was written. We also may have just not been able to find it in the winter without the leaves to help us out… Probably as disappointing to me as it was to you. However, I made the video more to tell the story of the tree rather than show the location of it. Even if it had still been standing it still would have been nothing like it’s former self. A meager 8 inches in diameter compared to the colossal size the trees used to grow in. Sorry to disappoint you though… I totally agree with the comment haha. Hopefully the title wasn’t misleading in any way :)

    • @palmerbowles1631

      That’s a great question… I’m no arborist but I’m guessing we totally could do that although the blight or some other disease might still follow them in the industrialized world. That’s my guess. It would be a great question for the American chestnut foundation though!

    • @marshja56
      @marshja56 4 месяца назад

      The blight would eventually find them anywhere in the eastern US. But there are several serious genetics-based programs underway attempting to bring these trees back. It is not a sure thing and even if successful it will take a long time - but it is not hopeless. I think it will happen.
