I hate the idea that transit is supposed to be “profitable” when it’s meant to be a public service. By contrast, the interstate highway system is not only not profitable but also inefficient compared to passenger rail yet the government and the public are happy to spend billions every year on expanding the system and adding more lanes
Connecting smaller communities!!!
PUBLIC TRANSPORT TURNED A PROFIT!?
This is such exciting news!!!
For underground train station Penn Station is absolutely legendary also the station went thru a huge renovation and facelift which it’s was time since the showing it’s age and Amtrak and LIRR offices most of its amenities at Moynihan train hall just extension of Penn station and even better and greater. Penn station is like an underground city with most retail stores and below ground and the rail platforms are far below ground level which it’s very interesting.
I’m so excited for this new project and can’t wait to see it completed 👍
The curve radius on the PA-5’s are specified because of how old the tracks are

Bus service from Port Authority (only blocks away from Penn Station) goes directly to several Casinos, instead of a train station at the end of town. The bus takes the Garden State Parkway instead of having to go to Philadelphia and loop back around. If the rail infrastructure was better the ACES would have had the advantage of less delays and consumption of alcohol allowed and with party style busses to the Casino.
I feel honored you felt my clips were good enough to feature along side Coasterfan 2105 but please include my channel link and ask before you use my footage.
Awesome
Would be nice if you can do a video on transit systems in other countries in Europe or Asia. Great informative video by the way.
CT Rail Shore Line East extension to Providence, Rhode Island with transfers to Amtrak and MBTA, that would be legit!!!
Amazing video; try MBTA, SEPTA, MARC and possibly the MTA NYC subways
The M8s used on Shore Line East are newer ones that are owned by ConnDOT alone, not jointly with NY. They are not used on the New Haven Line. They have had their third rail shoes removed, and therefore can not operate into Grand Central Terminal, or anywhere west of Pelham.
I thought all the M8s are part of a larger fleet that are jointly owned with the MTA? As in maybe they're not used by MTA but they are still owned by them? Wasn't really clear when I was researching.
@@DTransit You are right, he is wrong. CTDOT bought more to supplement the fleet and add more NHL express trains. The newer ones were just put into service wherever, not placed in certain spots. SLE uses 12 random M8 cars from the pool, some of which are MTA owned.

It was never called the "H&NH". Also, they didn't build the line to Boston; the part between Boston and Springfield was constructed by the Boston & Albany Railroad.
Thanks for the comment! I did some more digging around - prior to the NYNH&H, there were two railroads: the New York and New Haven railroad (which owned the portion from NY to New Haven) and the Hartford and New Haven (H&NH) Railroad that owned and built the route from New Haven to Springfield via Hartford. Let me know what you think!
great video!!! you should do mbta next 😝

What about the light rails?
The original station looked grandiose and gorgeous, such a shame it was demolished.
It was a cool set up NJT had with the locomotives it was a fun ride to AC so sad it stopped
$175 BILLION is an insanely large amount of money to spend on a single train corridor, especially one that already exists. The inflation adjusted cost of the ENTIRE original Interstate Highway System is $500 billion. This is the best investment in USA transportation ever. From San Francisco to LA is about 400 miles, and CAHSR will likely spend $160 billion ($400 million per mile). Highway construction is about $2.6 million per lane-mile, a six-lane freeway therefore costing $15 million per mile. Note that the estimated cost of extending Caltrain/CAHSR from where it presently ends in SF (4th and King) 2.2 miles to the ALREADY BUILT WITH A TRAIN BOX Salesforce Tower is $6.8 BILLION ($3 BILLION per mile).
3:06 "shooting upwards of 100 ⁰F for days on end" but the TV screenshot at 3:09 shows Central Park having a peak **heat index** of 96 ⁰F even Newark Airport, a local hot spot, only hit 100 ⁰F (air temperature) just once so far, on 22 June given the overhead power lines can start sagging well below 100 ⁰F, it doesn't help to exaggerate...
M3A and M7A trains do not run on the New Haven Line. Only M8s do.
Summer of 2011, one day in July, the new haven line of Metro North suffered catrastriphic failure due to overhead loosening due to heat. Some trains were stuck with no power, no air conditioning, no ventilation in the middle of nowhere in intense heat during rush hour (so trains full) until trains behind could be cleared and a diesel shunter could get to them and bring then to the next station. I beleive after that, the overhead wires were updated to have weights instead of springs to provide the tension even in hot weather. Surprised this wasn't done to the new York to Trenton line.
I was caught up in this mess. I was just about to enter the subway @157th when exiting commuters told me that nothing was running and to turn around. I immediately caught a southbound bus, but within a matter of a few stops the bus was jammed to capacity, forced to bypass more riders attempting to board. It took over an hour to get back to Columbus Circle. Visitors to NYC, who often are infrequent users of its transit systems, have no idea how critical they are to the daily functioning of the city.
Is anyone proposing ANYTHING to replace congestion pricing? Are there any signs it will return after the election?
Great question, Stephene Neson. I was wondering the same thing. Wonderful insight into this issue. Please respond DTransit
Congestion pricing isn't going to fix incompetence.
@@hyphen5322 what insight? He literally asked one question, about it returning after the election. Pretty much everyone thinks it will. That's not very insightful.
@@mirzaahmed6589 Plenty of incompetence all around, no doubt about it. It’s a politically driven, state- run institution operating locally. So what’s your solution? Another cleaning house of personnel?
@@mirzaahmed6589 Sorry Mirza Ahmed 6589. I was just trying to spread some positivity in this dark, cruel world. People can be really mean to each other sometimes so I just wanted to spread some kindness.
Keep building more highway lanes that will solve the issue for sure
One more lane bro
Helluva lot better than canceled trains. I moved from NYC to Florida and never looked back.

I wish we still had Andy byford
At least I hear he's going to Amtrak.
We even miss him in Toronto as well
In Japan/Germany/France, high speed trains are like 16 cars long. Why do we put up with such puny Acela trains, when they could serve so many more people and have more affordable fares if the trains were longer? We keep doing little piecemeal things.
probably for a similar reason as to why you don't see 747's flying short haul routes.
Exactly. Having live in 2 other 3 countries mentioned they are so far ahead in terms of public transport If your stations happen to not be long enough for 16 car trains then you'll have to compensate with increased frequency. Doing neither makes no sense
There are times the Harlem line diesel shuttle to Wassaic goes all the way from Grand Central but it’s very rare same with the Hudson line shuttle to Poughkeepsie.
Plenty of Hudson Line diesel trains run from Poughkeepsie to GCT.
Wow so amazing train
damn you have really good b-roll and editing. so many great foamer shots lol
New Canaan Branch is fully electrified, and runs trains through to Grand Central.
During peak in both directions, off peak it's a mostly hourly shuttle. Waterbury Branch Trains never run through and terminate at Bridgeport.
Danbury Branch trains also run to/from GCT at rush hours.
