It is a beautiful poem by Ali Sardar Jafri. I am translating it. On this very border, Yesterday the sun had set Dividing it in two parts On this very border Freedom’s dawn was wounded It is border of blood, tears, cries, sparks, Where hatred was sown And swords were drawn Here, stars had twinkled in the eyes of loved ones. Here, beloved faces had flickered amidst tears. Here, mother had lost her sons, Loving sister separated from brother This border which thrives on blood, and fumes out cinders Slithers like a cobra On the bosom of our soil. Adorned with weapons of war It comes to the battlefield Since when I am waiting on this Border for the next dawn This border is of flowers, of aroma, of dazzling hues, of springs, Smiling like a rainbow Swerving like a river, On the face of motherland, Wavering like tresses Spreading fragrance, sparkling like a bride’s braid, Although divides her head into two parts But with the sword of vermillion With the finger of sandal-paste. This border is of sweet-hearts, of lovers, of love-struck persons This border is of friends, of brothers, of well-wishers, Bright shining sun comes as a sentinel in the morn Moon and stars of the sky guard in the night, Let the land be trodden With abundance of green fields, Let it be surrounded By rows of green trees. May God protect it From the evil eyes of outsiders Let it remain safe from The eyesight of merchants of blood Let love prevail all over Let beauty be striking beauty Let heart be healing messiah, Let the gardens be covered With dazzling flowers. Wishing for a day when Hatred and tears, Flow out from the hearts Wishing for the day when This Border becomes worthy of kissing lips This is the Border of the bold, courageous, smart, committed, devoted persons This is the Border of Riders of heart-land This is the border of breezes of gardens of Lahore and Delhi.
