Second Wind: The SNOEK Refit
Noted Newport based nautical photographer and sailor Onne van der Wal talks about his early days in apartheid South Africa where he grew up sailing small boats and working on commercial fishing boats as a teenager. A poor student in high school, Onne’s father encouraged him to attend a trade school and completed a three year apprenticeship as a machinist in Cape Town. His true passion was sailing and after completing his trades education, Onne went on to race large sailboats as a professional crew member and joined the famous Dutch boat, FLYER, in the 1981/82 Whitbread around the world race now known as the Ocean Race. Winning the race was a huge stepping stone to his long and successful ...

The Goose Goes South. I’ve spent the last two years fixing up an old Grand Banks trawler. Tenley’s completed 15 months of chemo, surgery, and radiation for breast cancer. The last of three van der Wal kids graduated from college. We’ve been in business for 35 years… it’s time for an adventure. The first part of the journey from October to December starts through Long Island Sound to New York Ci...

The Snow Goose Refit: Replacing the Raritan Hot Water Tank
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.3 года назад
But first the old one needs to come out! I was fortunate to find the exact same model Raritan hot water tank that Grand Banks had installed in my GB 32 in 1986, 36 years ago! Let’s hope the new one will last just as long (36 years)! Wow! If so I think it will outlast me. Ha! Take a look at how I swapped out the old tank for the new!

Second Wind, The SNOEK Refit, a Rhode Island PBS special with Onne van der Wal
Good Evening, mike Slater in Southwest Harbor Maine woth JOYFUL a 1986 GB 33. Regarding the rsymarine autopilot. What length linear actuator, how connected and how mounted? Your response greatly appreciated. Thank You for your help. Standing By. Mike
I mounted a Raymarine motor with a sprocket and chain connected to the steering shaft in the fly bridge console below the shaft. Had to mill a key way in the shaft for second sprocket. I can explain more if you are interetsed, it works perfectly. Please email at onne@vanderwal.com and include your cell number we can chat. Happy to help. Onne.
I see you chose to let the sealant dry, and then cut the excess off. Nice video.
Yes it’s a much cleaner way to get the excees sealer off, a sharp blade leaves a nice straight edge and no messy smearing of the excess. Hey it works for me but my word ain’t gospel.
Thank you!
well done. thank you for posting.
Yes perfect! We did 4000 miles over the winter with the boat and just replaced the water/waste pump on the head just as a precaution. I had this same head on my previous boat and never a problem or a blockage 😄🤷🏼♂️
Are you happy with your choice for replacement?
Hey - where did you guys go? I was enjoying this... Help!
A medical situation arose for me quite suddenly, we left the boat in Nassau and underwent treatment in Boston for pancreatic cancer. At some point I’ll complete the series with episode 9 which will be a wrap up and I’ll have a bit more of an explanation of what I was dealing with. Actually episode 9 won’t happen as the whole journey (including the medical part of it) is being made in to a one hour documentary for PBS which will air in the fall of 2024. The cancer came on quite quickly and frighteningly. After more than a year since I was diagnosed and treated I’m doing so much better and am now cancer free, let’s hope it stays away! Thanks for your comments and watch for the PBS special or reach out to me on my website www.vanderwal.com for the documentary’s schedule. Onne
Just found you. What a delight. Hello to you One, from Trog in Mallorca.
Thanks Trog!
Im really enjoying this series, the places look amazing. Thankyou Tenly and Onne. We are over in Spain with my trawler and this is making me think very hard about shipping her over to follow the same path. Watching you come all the way down past New York to these delightful small towns - really beautiful, to me like classic, east coast Americana. Your nature photography is a delight.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the series, so did we. It would be great for you to do it on your boat. Where is home base for you?
Really enjoyed the travel series. Great job on the videos, and especially the photography.
Thank you!
Someone on Trawler Forum turned us on to you. We're looking forward to watching more!
Did you see episode #2 thru #8 on RUclips?
Fantastic!
Thank you!
Wow...999 subscribers! I get to be 1000!!! Subscribed!
Thanks and congrats!
So, renaissance man, now that you’ve got snoek in your stable as well, are you going to part w snow goose? Or keep them both? (No pressure of course ✌️). She is lovely by the way. Looks brand new now.
I sold Snoek and then bought Snow Goose and spent two winters updating all her systems. No plans of selling her, she is a sweet little boat, suits us perfectly. This coming summer we plan on doing the Hudson, Erie Canal, Ottawa and Montreal and back thru Lake Champlain to RI!
Just found this, great job Onne! I am staring at the same task on my 1987 42CL. Two questions, if I may 1. I am sure that some of the stripper got into the cracks. Did you do anything in particular to get it out or did the wipe-downs take care of it? Do you see any evidence now that any leftover stripper is causing issues? 2. I am concerned that the sanding will leave the hinges and ring pulls proud of the sole. Did you have to do any chiseling to lower the fit so they are flush with the sole? Thanks in advance!
We should have a chat on the phone and i can explain, please email me if that works for you with your contact details I’m onne@vanderwal.com
Thanks, Onne. Will do.
Either way all the best and I hope your doing well. Maybe hanging at anchor in the berry islands right now 🤞
Oh man so I basically binge watched all 8 of the snow goose episodes Olle and whatever happened once you hit the Bahamas? Given you’ve got the boat I dream of plus just did the trip I dream of I’m dying for more. I’m convinced I read about your initial purchase years ago in either GB spray magazine or soundings maybe? Either way your cinematography is second to none and each episode was really well produced. What are the odds there are more episodes in the works? If not, what are the odds you’d consider selling SG to me so I can pick up where you left off? Truly you’re a standout in a field of not so good RUclipsrs and im seriously looking to get me an east coast 32. Especially one without the wraparound rails in the cockpit like so many of them have.
Michael, thanks for your glowing comments on my videos and boat trip. Yes the trip came to screeching halt as I was diagnosed with cancer and had to head to Boston for treatments. I’m 10 days away from being done with treatments since March, a long time! So ready to be done. No more episodes on my RUclips channel but we are working on a 2 part series about the whole Snow Goose story from refit to ICW to Bahamas and the medical story for PBS. So that’s where you will see the whole story and how it continued where I left off with my RUclips series. Hoping to have it air mid 2024. Stay in touch and sorry but I’m not selling Snow Goose, love that little boat. Doing the Great Lakes, Thousand Islands, Ottawa, Montréal and Lake Champlain next summer if all goes well.
@@Onnevanderwal I am so, so sorry to hear your news. Wishing you all the best with a speedy & strong recovery & greatly looking forward to the new series to come. Life, after all, is just one big long journey, right? Either way you've been inspirational to me (on the photography front as well) & having grown up boating on the GLs feel free if you swing by or near Toronto to let me know. My wife & I would happy to buy dinner at one of our secret restaurants or just show you around the city if you'd like. Again best of look can't wait for more SG videos. All the best, Mike
Good video! I think that folding yourself into that small compartment and then working is called "boat yoga"
Lost me with the liberal mural...RBG
That’s too bad, I liked the artwork and wasn’t making a political statement, I guess you are which is too bad and shortsighted. Did you watch any of the other 8 episodes?
@Onnevanderwal short-sighted?? LOL I think not. RBG was passionately bias, and politically motivated against a sitting POTUS violating her sworn oath to the Constitution... Good riddance
Astonishing, commitment, dedication, hard work and experience ENJOY IT!
Yep! It’s a commitment but the end result was so worth it. Thx for your comment.
I did not have that problem, it fired right up and has worked flawlessly since. It’s a good system, well designed and easy to install for the diy person!
Nice video. I have the same unit in my boat. Did you mix up the intake and exhaust of the compressor?
This is a fantastic piece that commemorates all the work you’ve put in! I grew up sailing small boats on Monterey Bay and want a GB32 for my own family in Alaska. I’ll be looking forward to the new Snow Goose videos
Thanks Andrew!
The Goose goes South? 😢
Yep we are just about to go in to production on the Snow Goose adventure. 95% of the footage has been shot so it’s really a large editing job with some voice overs. I don’t have a time line yet. Keep in touch on that.
Fantastic video, you really captured the character of the island.
Thank you David!
Great videos and awesome boat!
Had relatives who lived in South Africa, originally from Friesland Netherlands during WWll the rest of My family moved to Wisconsin and Michigan in the USA
Also a Van Der Wal ? Born in the US?
Yep! van der Wal! Born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands and now a dual citizen of both countries. En jij?
As a cold water sailer and DiveMaster diving in the Bahamas the first time was awesome and so warm!
What happened to the videos? They just stopped.

@@Onnevanderwal very sorry to hear. I wish you the best and hope you’re well soon!
Thanks Vine!
When is episode 9 coming?
Read the explanation I make above
Wow, what a fantastic video Onne and Tenley!!! It really makes me miss the Abacos...
Subbed. And I love your GB 32 :)
Thank you, so do we! She is a beauty!
Enjoyed your time in Annapolis, St. Michael's and Cutts and Case in Oxford. It has been a minute since I have been there. Thanks for the journey.
Happy to share our journey and thanks for following along.
I felt like I was on a mini-Vacation, but it ended too soon. Great content and locals! Thanks. Look forward to your next adventure.
Thank you for the local coverage. Means so much to those of us who haven’t been back since Dorian & COVID.
Someday I'll be doing this. Until then I will thoroughly enjoy your very charming videos. Your chats with the locals are a treasure. Smooth sailing!
Thanks Dave. To me the locals are what it's all about. I love chatting with them and hearing their side of life in the islands, it gives you the real flavor of life in the Bahamas, good and bad, realistic, not a visitors view or perspective.
Great stuff. Looks like a terrific adventure.
Thanks Joe. I think the best thing about this aventure is "waking up on location". Every sunset and sunrise casts this beautiful buttery light on the surrounding areas and subjects we are floating in. No need to run and capture the best light, you are right there every day, sheer luxury!
You’re photography is indeed professional quality. Head and shoulders above most boating content on RUclips.
Thank you John!
Love the local chat, the lives of others is fascinating.
Thank you.
Another nice video. We are planning basically the same trip next year. Would like to have a list of your stops, likes, and dislikes. Especially the Bahamas as I can’t find you on Marine Traffic over there. Best and enjoy. Spoke too soon. Just found you at Man O War.
Charlie, would be happy to. let’s get in touch when I’m back in RI in June. My email is onnevanderwal@gmail.com

Thanks Jules!
I appreciate your comment and thanks for following along. The next episode will be about the passage from Palm Beach across the Gulfstream to the Bahamas and cruising the Abacos. Till then! Onne.
Thanks for sharing your journey, absolutely loving it.
Hi Onne, We miss you in RI, but thank you so much for taking us along in your journey! If you don't mind, what is that on your hot shoe? Is it a tether to your computer/tablet? Thank you!
it is a GPS receiver that embeds the lat/long in each image.
I concur with Tenley on the blue. Only this evening have I discovered that you have this sequence of videos. So, of course I’m going through the entire chronology. As we last spoke on the bus to the swim, I’m right behind you in the quest for a trawler or other displacement hull. When you get back, next project, call me!
will do.
I have done parts of the trip on several occasions on Kemosabe. Thanks for bring back those happy memories!
Our pleasure!
What a great area and enjoying your voyage right from your first video of your boat purchase.
Thanks so much!
Nice video, and re-visit many familiar places . Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Tom. It was great to chat and get the inside on the short cut through the creek. What a beautiful passage that was. Good seeing you underway the next morning. We are heading to St. Augustine today.
We met in Darien, Ga. wanted to clarify, you were at the Macintosh County docks which provide overnight docking for $1 per ft with Elec and water. Just upstream under the bridge are the City of Darien docks where boats may tie up for free for 48 hours. The City dock is in front of Skippers Fish Camp restaurant. Both docks have 20ft of water and accommodate large 50ft plus yachts. The bridge has about 30 ft clearance. It was a pleasure meeting you.
