Ballistic Coefficients, high vs low.
We take a simple but practical look at what is the ballistic coefficient of a bullet. Within common hunting distance (0-300 maybe 400 yards), is there really that much difference between a high BC vs a Low BC?

    Great caliber!! My first deer rifle I bought for myself was a Browning BLR in 358 Win. That was mid 1@80's so Im not a super long time user. But I have tried to make up for it in a few rifles so chambered! ❤❤ I have a 308 Savage 99 I might be sending out for a re chambering and boring! Like a fool that BLR was sold off. But a Ruger 77 and Ruger American are still here. Took a buck last fall with that Ruger with a NOE 230g Cast bullet! No idea how many have fallen to my 358's and 35 calibers since the early 1980's. But its allot! I never tried RL10 at all. Wouldn't pick it as a 358 powder. So good stuff!!

      Thank you, cw2a. My first experience with a 35, was my first deer 38 years ago with my Dad's Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. From there, I wandered away from the great mid-bore and chased velocity. I finally came around full circle 17 years ago, with the Ruger 77 Hawkeye in 358 Win. I have taken many deer with it. My brother took a large pig with it and since then, we refer to that rifle as the Ham Slammer. I have since added the Stainless Laminate BLR in .358. How do Cast shoot out of your 77? I've not tried it yet. As for the RL-10x. I can't take credit, as I read about someone else trying it. Be that as it may, I am impressed with the velocities RL 10 produces, however there is work to be done in the accuracy department. I'm getting ready to try the 200 TTSX with CFE223. I've read of some folks having good results with this powder. Anyhow, I appreciate you stopping in, and thank you for the remarks. Cheers.

    Well explained. Only question i have is as follows: a 150 gr bullet stays 150 gr. Higher bc bullet may have a different shape and likely be longer. To achieve this, the material will not be the same, as the density must be lower. Thus, a bullet that will not be as "hard". I might be wrong, but 150 gr stays 150 gr and up to 300 or 400 yards your scope on your rifle will determine the accuracy

    • @358Outdoors
      @358Outdoors 9 дней назад

      Hi, thanks for stopping in and for your remarks. You are entirely correct. Everything being equal, both 150's would be the same length. Change in Ogive from tangent to secant would change the profile and thus the length and BC. Or change the nose and base profiles from Round to Spitzer, and flat base to boat tail would do it also. If you look at the TSX or TTSX, they are longer than their conventional jacketed lead core counter parts, due to their full copper Monolithic design. However, the BC's on the TSX and TTSX are lower. I would presume the flat Meplat on the TSX along with the relief grooves the bullets may have a negative effect on the overall BC of those bullets. I am not certain. All the best

    • @358Outdoors
      @358Outdoors 9 дней назад

      Hi Keenan, I have tried on 2 separate occasions to capture the TTSX in a hybrid gel/water media. I failed on both attempts first, went out the side of the media, the second penetrated out the back. As for premium bullet suggestions, I guess I would ask what cartridge are you shooting, and how far are you shooting? Some have suggested that the smaller capacity 35's you don't need a premium because the smaller 35's just do not push them fast enough to require a premium. That is obviously their opinion, and I respect that. I only have experience with the TTSX and the Nosler Partition, out of the 358 Win and the 35 Whelen Ackley Improved. Both performed wonderfully. This fall I am taking the 358 Win with either the 200TTSX or the 225 Woodleigh PP to Africa for a plains game hunt. As for the Hammer, I have not given them a try yet, but they are on my schedule to do so. I also have a box of North Forks, and a couple boxes of Hawk bullets that I need to give a go with. I hope to try all of these in the 358 Win, 35 whelen Ackley Imp, and the 350 Rem Mag. All the best Keenan. Thanks for stopping in.

RL-10x is a great powder for the 200 class. I have not tried it with any other weight. I've not found a specific load that will give me an inch @ 100. Not that it is required, I just know the Hawkeye is capable of that. TAC is a great powder for the 225's. As for the 180's or the 250's, I'd have to go dig through my notes. Hi JS, thanks for stopping in and for subscribing. I appreciate it. I agree with you in that there are better options out there for both animals. The intention was not to advocate using small calibers on larger animals. My intention was to emphasize the importance of matching the proper bullet to the game you are after and the caliber you are using. A secondary point was aimed at those that do not reload. That is, their rifles can be much more flexible if they were to reload, due to the many more bullet weight and styles not commonly found in sporting goods stores. For instance, when was the last time anyone has seen a 110 gr Vmax loaded in factory ammunition for the 30-06? Are there better varmint rounds, absolutely. But if that is all the hunter has, the ought six can be used for hayfield or beanfield woodchucks. That's all I was trying to highlight. All the best

    The problem I ran into trying to run .357 bullets in my 35 Rem chambered 336 Marlin was the fact that the barrel spec ahead of the chamber is without any free-bore and the leade is very short and steep (same-same 45/70 and 444 Marlin). To get any sort of bullet jump, the bullet was too deep into the case for my liking. This was done in an effort to come up with a solid bullet load for the cartridge, and 140 grain Barnes XPB bullets were being used. These were just empty cases being measured for contact and checked for cycling. Short as they were, they cycled and ejected well. Since I'm a big fan of all cartridges 358, here's hoping you get many viewers, with whom to share your experience. Oh, by the way. those .357 140 grain XPB's set well for bullet grip, jump, and cartridge cycling in empty 358 Win, and 350 R/mag cases. Good Luck

      @358Outdoors 2 месяца назад

      Hey Happy Thanksgiving! Yes I would agree, the .358 winchester and other 35 caliber rounds are devastating. To answer your question, on this particular deer, yes there was a bit of meat loss in the shoulder area. To my surprise, the 200gr Hornady Spire point was softer than I had expected. That was a small deer, and the impact velocity was in the neighborhood of 2,200fps. I was not expecting that much bullet upset. On the contrary, I shot a doe at 168 yards with a 225gr Sierra GameKing. The shot was placed directly on the should as well. With this deer, there was very little meat loss. You could, as they say, "Eat right up to the hole" Anyhow, I appreciate you stopping in. I have not put out a video in a while. Life gets busy, however I will be putting some more out shortly. The problem I had with some of my handloads was 45-60% failure in primer ignition. They were brand new winchester wlr. I originally thought they were a bad batch. On further examination I was wondering about primer seat pressure. What is your experience.

    • @358Outdoors
      @358Outdoors 2 месяца назад

      @@keenanhosking659 I am really surprised to hear about that experience. The only light strike issues I've experienced were with my Browning BLR 358, and that was a function of the gun itself, not the primer. With respect to primer seating pressure, I seat them so that the primer sits just below flush with the head of the case. Sometimes, it requires more pressure to accomplish this. If the primer pocket is not cleaned prior to seating, you are seating up against carbon build up, which i could see leading to a primer failing to go off. With the Ruger Hawkeye in 358, I've yet to experience a single primer failure regardless of make and if it was a standard LR or LRM. Hope you have a great Monday. Matthew

    Isn't 358 running a 1-14 twist? 300 yards is a good poke. seems a lighter bullet going faster would tighten up for you. Say a 140 grainer stone Hammer from Hammer bullets. Going faster it would open up better for Ya. Hammer recommends: 140 grainer in a min twist of 22 178 grainer in a min twist of 19. 196 grainer Minimum required twist rate is 1-16″ or faster 200 grainer minimum twist rate is 1-16″ 203 grainer Recommended twist rate is 1-17″ minimum Christ bless!

      I agree with you, 300 yards with the 358 win is my personal cut off. Now if I am shooting the 200FTX, I might stretch that to 350, just because it was designed with the 35 Remington in mind. By the time it reaches that 350 mark, it has slowed down into the velocity range of the 35 Rem. Where I hunt every year, I will never shoot to 300 yards, more like 0-200?I am practicing at that range because our PH encouraged us to be able to reliably shoot at that distance, in the event a last minute opportunity may present itself. Most of the shots we will encounter will be close to 200, 250 maybe. I have not tried the Hammer bullets yet. They look pretty amazing and I am sure they would be devastating. One of these days I will have to give them a try. Thanks for the remarks and the suggestion. God Bless

    If you shot a 6” group at 300 yards off of sticks that mighty fine shooting. Not sure I would use that result to decide the .040” off lands had any effect on your group though. You’d be smart to test your groups off the bench at 100. Just a thought.

      You're right, adjusting the seating depth is not really warranted. I do need to work up a better load, as I know this rifle will shoot sub MOA and this load @ 100 is 1.5-1.75MOA. Shooting with Sticks is far different than what I thought it would be like. Like the PH said, get off the bench and shoot from nothing but sticks. So that's the plan. I love the 358, it is extremely flexible with the range of bullet weights you can use. You're right, it is a reloading only proposition. Thankfully I have a plethora of components for it. When I was at our local gun shop recently, they had 16 boxes of Winchester 200grainers. They were not the silver tips, looked a lot like the 200 Hornady Spire point. I have 30 years living in Alaska and guiding hunters for brown bear and Yukon moose. Anyone who takes a small caliber rifle and lead core bullets to kill a 1500 Pound Yukon is an ignorant fool who could easy get them self-attack and killed by these Moose and then there is the bear factor to deal with. Even bonded bullets come apart on these moose in small calibers. The minimum to hunt Alaska is a 338-win mag and using any of the copper expanding bullet - Never any kind of lead core bullets no matter how many knuckle heads make videos shooting gel blocks you don't risk your life using crap lead core bullets and small caliber guns. Every hunter can use what they want just to be aware you could be putting your life at risk doing ignorant stupid things that are fine to hunt lower 48 deer that in Alaska will get people killed

      I can't disagree. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Especially if you have better options available, and you're hunting in an environment like Alaska. Like you mentioned, any of the Mono's are fantastic, decent expansion with superb penetration. I am also a fan of the Swift A-Frame, Woodleigh and the Northfork. With respect to caliber for big heavy game, I would say bring the largest caliber you can shoot well. Practice practice practice, load it with a mono of suitable weight. Then put the shot where it needs to go and go collect your trophy. I appreciate your comment and hope you have a fine evening, Cheers, Matthew
