My Favorite Freeze Dried Food
Just showing my favorite 2 brands of freeze dried food. "Real Turmat" is my all-times favorite but it's not available for purchase in the US. When hiking in North America l buy meals from Mountain House.

Caroline's Gear Review

Caroline decided to sabotage my channel and use my hard earnt reputation in order to promote herself and her own videos. When she realized that 'editing' isn't as easy as she thought and that she needed me for that task, she threatened me with not cooking ...

I haven't found a video I've loved on RUclips in so long
Thank you! That made my evening 🤙🏻 Hope you find in my channel other videos you may love too 😻👍🏻
That looks really fun...except for all the suffering. heh. I camp in the snow a few times a year, but usually as part of a climb. I've never done the sled thing. Wanna try. Thanks!
Yeah, it's great fun if you're into these things 😉 You should give it a try! It must suck to carry all those heavy snow pegs when climbing a mountain, even the smallest 24cms ones! 💪🏻Hope you enjoyed the video 👍🏻
@@alwaysforwardyt Your adventures inspire me! Greetings and thanks, from the North Cascades of Washington State, USA.
A very, very beautiful film. I like your ability to speak openly about the psychological aspects of such a tour. Anyone who does these tours, whether summer or winter, knows what you mean. These thoughts accompany most people on a tour like this. Being outside alone is a challenge and a liberation at the same time. I'm looking forward to your next film. I hope you always come back from your adventures healthy.
Thanks for the lovely comment and your good wishes. I loved when you beautifully said how: "Being outside alone is a challenge and a liberation at the same time." I'll be making new winter videos in Norway next year. l hope you also enjoy them 😊 All the best! 🙏
If you enjoyed this video, you may find this one helpful: ruclips.net/video/AVTUpAd88qA/видео.html Here, you'll see me using the Positron Pro in extreme weather conditions: ruclips.net/video/qBxQPv8YtDo/видео.html Hope it helps!
Nice review, thank you! I've had the Positron Pro for a few years now, and you're right it's a bit too warm for the UK. I bought mine for some time in Scotland during the winter months but was always too hot. However I really learned how amazing this jacket was last year in the US during extremely cold weather -15C to -22C and the cold didn't touch me with this jacket on. I was very, very impressed. I will try the Neutrino, thanks for showing the packability, that was super helpful.
Thanks for telling us your opinion about the Positron Pro. I'm sure it'll be of help to people considering buying the jacket. I'm happy you found my video helpful 😊👍🏻
Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Nice shots, great achievment. Well done, haste ya back.
Thank you! That was exactly 4 years ago... l had a wonderful time, l would do it again! Maybe in the future 🤩 This was my last hike in Scotland (with my wife Caroline), before we left Europe: ruclips.net/video/2-JeW-K2Eio/видео.html We now hike in Canada 😊ruclips.net/p/PL2HjUb2OrkRXq0vp85cds5zxpyJTQr9gP&feature=shared See you on the trail! 😉
Nice to see you again.. :-) Any big plans for this winter. Returning to Norway for a visit?
Thanks! Good to hear from you 😊 Yes, I'll be back to Dividalen at the end of January (if everything goes well 🤷🏻♂️). l don't have specific plans for now, just keep learning and enjoying the winter 😻🌪️❄️🇳🇴
You realize those blueberries are supposed to be for the bears…if they get hungry, where do they go for lunch?
😂😂 l never connected those dots before... l'll stay away from those tasty berries next summer 😄
Real Turmat and Bla band are my favourites. I especially like the Real Arctic ration packs. Their peach isotonic drink is the biz after a hard day.
l've also tried "Blå Band" and l like some of the flavors (same with "Summit to Eat"). l got some Arctic rations from Real last winter. l kept the isotonic drinks for this summer in Canada 😋😄Sooo refreshing when it's sunny and hot!
You live in America now? What are the Sutherland ticks and midges going to eat in future?
😂😂 l'll use that as an argument when l find it's time to go back 😅
Fantastic reflections :-) Much sympathy for your feet and other challenges, and it's also quite entertaining to hear your feelings after the walk.
Yes, very deep reflections😅 My wife named the hike the "Pain-nine Way" after my ordeal 😉 Going through the pain paid off as even today "My Pennine Way Ordeal" is one of my favorite videos: ruclips.net/video/Pe5VGOqOk_A/видео.htmlfeature=shared and l have but the fondest memories of the trail and the lovely people l encountered (especially now, from the distance). This very year, l had the same problem with my feet, it seems unpredictable: ruclips.net/video/fdru1pdpQ_s/видео.html
Nice looking outdoor food 👌
Yeah, it's as good as it gets... other than the one my wife dehydrates, of course (she may read this so you gotta back up yourself 😂😎).
Incredible!
Thank you 😊 Don't miss the Nordkalottleden videos: ruclips.net/p/PL2HjUb2OrkRUUWjptO-PpU3F-5TnRAump&feature=shared
Thanks for the great video! Can’t wait to step on the GDT myself in 2026.
Thank you 😊 You're almost there! Spending 2025 dreaming about the coming adventure is a good thing to do 😻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻
Awesome stuff. Nice to see people out using the trail.
Thank you! 😊 Hopefully we'll be back next year 🤞🏻😁 BTW, that X-Mid Pro 2 you guys make is a very good looking tent 😻 l like how easy it is to put up and how spacious it seems. I'll leave the link here in case someone wants to take a look at it: ruclips.net/video/WEkhJq74We4/видео.html
@@alwaysforwardyt Thanks :)
Well done! I did Section C in 2019 and had to bail off Section B in 2022 as I ended up with heatstroke. Section G is definitely on my bucket list, maybe for 2025.
Thank you! Oh wow, a heatstroke is not a joke. l hope you had some company as that can be quite serious. All the best for Section G/2025! 😊
@@alwaysforwardyt I was actually solo on that trip. Thankfully I recognized that I had stopped sweating and some of the other signs and had an inreach device with me. I was able to get myself to an outfitter camp I had passed earlier in the day and the nice folks there took care of me for a day while my wife and brother in law bounced up some 4x4 trails to extract me. In hindsight I should have just hit the SOS and called the helicopter but it all worked out in the end.
Oh wow, what a story... Luckily it had a good end 🤠 Thanks for sharing as many of us will take good note of it 🙏
Great work on this project! Love that you both brought perspective to this section of the gdt. The time we shared at Kakwa was special! Paul & Kim
Thank you! 😊 We also had a wonderful time with the two of you and wished we could've stayed overnight. Maybe next time! 😉🤩

Good job guys! Could you be so kind and share your gpx please? :)
Hi there. Sorry, l missed this (sometimes RUclips does not notify me). l replied to you on Facebook 👍
How beautiful is the nature in Canada, and how scary it is to see the bear tracks :-O in your video. (24:30) That fire at night in the wild must have been very special. I love the "cabesaso" in (25:20) :-) . What an impressive photo in (28:25) !!!!. Thank you very much for this video, it was very nice to watch. A big hug to both of you !!!!!.
Thank you! Yes, the nature in those latitudes is beautiful and wild. And yes, knowing that there is wild life that can kill you truly changes the experience. The fire we made was a truly special moment, and not just because we were wet and cold and needed the warmth 😅 I loved spending a couple of hours by the fire pit after Caroline went to bed. Regards from DC 🇺🇸! 😊🙏
You two are amazing. Thanks for sharing your intrepid journey and the stunning vistas. ❤
Thank you 🙏😅 I'm always amazed at how Caroline bridges the gap between her office job and the Canadian wilderness 😲 I'm more of a wild mix 😅 Happy you enjoyed the video! 😊
Didn’t I tell you once to use Topo Athletics 😂. Looks amazing there. I just came back from doing the Skye Trail in Scotland. All your info on the Nordkalottleden was really useful btw, and the planning will begin at some stage. Best wishes. Ed
😅 That was on my list when we were in London. Maybe in the future. I'm happy my video helped. I actually thought of connecting you with an English young man who I've also helped with the Nordkalottleden. He walked it this summer so he could give you recent 'intel' and his own suggestions 🤷🏻♂️
What a hike guys, episode is pure joy to watch! Atmospheric and simply enjoyable!
Thank you! We had a great time yes 😊
Excellent!! 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Sir 😉
Amazing!
Thank you, happy you liked it! 😊
Stunning scenery and and beautiful shots. Highly enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback! We're happy you enjoyed the video 😊👌It was an awesome hike! 😻
I much prefer the old route, down the side of the Pub and then follow the stream to the top and cross over the Moor to Kinder Downfall. That was the route I followed in 1975.
That's good to know, maybe others choose to follow it now that you mentioned it. l hope you enjoyed my video 😊
@@alwaysforwardyt Yes it brought back many happy memories of my FIRST Hike in that long HOT SUMMER of 1975/6, Pennine Way Hike that I used for training to join the Military. I repeated the Hike this time from North to South when I left the Forces in 1979 to relive and regain my Civillian Status and later went on the C2C West to East 1980 and the East to West C2C in 1981. Then a two year break to train for the John OGroats to Lands End hike, followed two years later by a South to North Lands End to John OGroats hike and finally finished Hiking after completing a THREE YEAR SOLO HIKE of the complete Circumnavigation of the at the time UN OPENED Coastal Hike of the UK Mainland, my only stipulation was when I arrived at a river I would follow it inland until the first Bridge then cross over the river to continue the Coastal Hike. THREE YEARS LATER I completed the Coastline of Scotland, England and Wales way before the Official route was announced a few years ago. That last route I did not record my milage but I have see the distance for the New Coastal Route Titled "King Charles III England Coast Path" quoted as being 2,700 miles long when it is completed. Tony in Essex a Retired Hiker.
@@user-TonyUK That's a lot of hiking Tony! Well done! l was going to suggest that it was time to hike in a different country, but you mentioned you're now a retired-hiker... Anyway, with all those walks l'm sure you've got many wonderful memories and entertaining stories to tell. Regards from DC, USA 😊
@@alwaysforwardyt I would love to get back on the Long Distance Hiking trails again but I know the damage done to my Knee Joints would not permit anything more than maybe a local 5 mile hike based over a 10 day period of time. Yes I miss it but the damage done will not heal so I just after make do with watching others Hike and pass on my memories of Hikes I have completed in the Past. My ONE Regret is never hiking across the USA from West Coast to East coast on one of my 10 visits to the USA, but on one vacation I did a 5 mile day Hike along the Appalation Train near Roannoak Virginia. It was only after spotting a Bear I became affraid as I had no Firearm being a UK CItizen just over there on Vacation. Still I have my memories and RUclips to refresh the parts I have forgotten. Tony in England
@@user-TonyUK No regrets Tony, you've hiked enough 😊Knee injuries are usually problematic; l'm sorry to hear that. Anyway, life goes on and, as you said, now you're enjoying hiking from the memories you have. Lucky you! l find that in life, there are different stages to do different things so what's not to like? Take care my friend 😊
Hey man, Great content! Wich inner are you using in your duomid? Is it the solomid xl inner?
Thanks 👍Nah, it's a cheap one from Ali Express (l paid around GBP50 a few years ago when living in the UK). lt's from this store (just checked my emails for you), but l don't have the exact model (not in the email). l think it's this one, but make sure you check the dimensions before you order (it's not a perfect fit, but it does the job well. l'd recommend it): www.aliexpress.us/item/2255799941520575.html?gps-id=pcStoreLeaderboard&scm=1007.22922.271278.0&scm_id=1007.22922.271278.0&scm-url=1007.22922.271278.0&pvid=4b918672-3f43-4bd6-815d-27c57b50ba66&_t=gps-id%3ApcStoreLeaderboard%2Cscm-url%3A1007.22922.271278.0%2Cpvid%3A4b918672-3f43-4bd6-815d-27c57b50ba66%2Ctpp_buckets%3A668%232846%238115%232000&pdp_npi=4%40dis%21USD%2164.42%2149.76%21%21%2164.42%2149.76%21%40210318c317275711603695060e291c%2112000018905175617%21rec%21US%21%21ABXZ&spm=a2g0o.store_pc_home.smartLeaderboard_2008804236010.4000127835327&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa
@@alwaysforwardyt Thank you so much 👍
Thanks
My pleasure 👍🏻
I need a jacket for Mountaineering can you suggest between mythic ultra or positron pro or batura jacket?
I don't know whether you'll be climbing the Everest or the Aconcagua, but I'd say the Mythic Ultra should be a good mountaineering jacket (weight to warmth ratio looks good). Good luck!
@@alwaysforwardyt I am going for 7000m peaks expedition so what do you think?
The Mythic Ultra won't be as warm as the Positron, but taking into account the weight difference, I'd still pick that one (Mythic). You can then add a ~200g down vest (Mountain Hardware Whisperlite, for example) for a more functional, flexible clothing system (that vest packs very small so you can always have it in a easily accessible pocket of your pack).
@@alwaysforwardyt batura jacket will be too heavy?
@ayushbodh285 Stay away from waterproof down jackets and be happy 😊
Amazing video. Very informative. Hello from Italy! It's so incredibly hot and humid here, that it's actually kind of refreshing to watch someone in the cold 🥶😂
😅 Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed it. Sorry for the late reply, I've been hiking the Rocky Mountains with no phone network. Video coming soon! 😎😉
Thanks for video... I am doing research where I could go next. This looks very interesting!
Thank you! Then the Nordkalottleden is a great place to start. To this date, it is still the best (3 seasons) hike I've ever done 😊 Don't forget to take a look at the actual Nordkalottleden videos: m.ruclips.net/p/PL2HjUb2OrkRUUWjptO-PpU3F-5TnRAump
Inspirational! You've made me want to pack my bags and head north this winter. I took a pulk into Sarek one winter many moons ago. I went with snowshoes instead of skis and the Swedes thought I was bonkers "Haha, you look like a goblin" they said. Very well shot and edited by the way.
Thank you! Yes, you hardly see snowshoes in those latitudes. Based on your comment, should l assume that you know how to survive in the coldest winter months of Scandinavia by yourself?
@@alwaysforwardyt I'm out of practice doing unsupported winter expeditions in the far north. The last time I did that was many years ago. I slept seven days in a tent pulling a pulk from Saltoluokta into the heart of Sarek but I wasn't alone. I had a friend with me. There's a photo of our tent on the community tab of my youtube page. If I were to do it again I'd need to do some training I think. I remember how damn hard it was pulling that pulk. And the sense of isolation is profound. Every decision can be the difference between coming out alive and not. Even things like making sure your gloves don't blow away! Really impressive that you did that alone. It's a whole other level of psychological drama.
That sounds like a great trip! I know Saltoluokta and Sarek, of course. Being alone takes safety to another level because you are all you have. For that reason, fears amplify. Either way is very enjoyable! 😊❤️❄️🌨️🌬️
Excellent!!!
Thank you!! 👍🏻😊
I think Caroline's video is much better than yours, Antonio 😅 I love It, Congrats 😍🥳🎈
Yes, I'll have to agree. I must say her editing style looks very familiar... 🙄😅😎 I'm happy you enjoyed it! 👌🏻😊
@@alwaysforwardyt Could her choice of costume also be more appealing than yours? Maybe try purloining it for your own next video?? (To be clear, I mean just the home gear review ones; not the outdoor Arctic treks.)
@@davidwright5094 You meant that you'd like me to do a similar (3 seasons) gear review?
I just came inside to get away from the midges and the rain. I then watched a video advising people not to come to where I live in summer! I think you're right though, I'd rather live in a minefield in Chad!
😅😅 I've said many times in my videos that l love Scotland and Scottish people; the same is true for my wife. But boy, those evil beasties are creatures from hell 😱😱😅☺️
I always say they were the ultimate marriage test 😄

Mmh, so this is where my hand towel disappeared to 🙄at 1:07
Negative, the towel didn't disappear, l took it ☝🏻😎😅
nice video.. I like to build alot of my gear. most of the time I'm in a hammock, but the times I'm on ground, I made a 300 fleece bag I slide my close cell ThermR foam pad in, then ThermR neoAir extreme ontop of foam pad, all wrapped in 300 Fleece. then use a -40F WM bag. I made an artic bedding bag this all goes in. so far this has worked to -30F for me... If not as cold I'll use a 0F WM bag... good videos. hope to see more.
Building your gear is great. Nobody knows better than you what you like and how you like it 😉
Lovely to hear a bit about your background. I can see that you really understand what it means to be alone in the wild. You're dead right with your comparison of the Scottish Highlands and northern Scandinavia. I always feel that the latter is like Scotland on steroids. Bigger, wilder, more vast, tougher and more unspoilt. I love Scotland but northern Norway and Sweden is something else.
l love Scotland too, but the Arctic weather plays in another league. l did my very first thru-hike (and first time wild-camping) in Scotland in winter (first week of March 2020, the SUW). Had a done the same in Scandinavia l would now be dead. That's the difference 😊 (and the much larger landscape, taller mountains, etc.). But, again, l do love Scotland and the Scottish people. BTW, this video proves l can stay quiet and do silent filming (beginning and end 10:03 🤐😶😅).
Really enjoying this journey. I was hoping to get to northern Sweden this September but I won't be able to, so this is the next best thing!
l'm sorry to hear that; what a shame. Maybe next year! 😊 The Nordkalottleden is the hike that l feel set the foundations of the hiker l am today. To this date, the NKL is the best 3 seasons hike l've done.
You chose a great area for your hike. Torridon to the south and Assynt to the north are also worth exploring. The ticks are a menace though. Hay demasiados de ellos! Great video. Next time you are in Scotland let me know. Happy to recommend some places.
Yes, it was beautiful! l have hiked quite a bit in Scotland (SNT, CWT, SUW, etc.) and l always had a great time. Scottish people welcomed and treated me very well! l'll never forget 😊We now live in the US and every now and then my wife and l talk about Scotland and how we would like to go back in the future (when back to Europe). As for the ticks... it's what it is... It seems like soon (2025?) we'll have a vaccine against the horrible Lyme disease... www.cdc.gov/lyme/about/lyme-disease-vaccine.html#:~:text=Valneva%20and%20Pfizer%20have%20developed,A%20(OspA)%20of%20Borrelia.
Wonderful video, friend! I have done the inflatable and closed foam cell pad stacking and it definitely helps. But I have always heard and put the closed cell on the bottom, but you say to put it on top. Is this for any particular reason?
Thanks! In my experience, when sleeping around or below -20°C (the colder the more noticeable), putting the inflatable pad directly on the ground (or the tent's floor) then adding the closed cell on top achieves better insulation. In the other configuration, l feel the inflatable pad sucks my body heat. Very noticeable, again, when it's sufficiently cold. You may achieve different results with different sleeping pads 🤷🏻♂️ but that's my 'general' recommendation.
@@alwaysforwardyt Interesting! I will definitely try this out this winter. Thanks!
@tickbait777 You should definitely try it and draw your own conclusions. Make sure you take a thermometer so that you can check the temps (the colder the easier to notice). Good luck!
Me encanta este video. Gracias! I hiked in Padjelanta last year and the weather was very similar. It makes it very challenging. I admire the fact that you and your wife kept smiling through the rain and wind. Looking forward to watching more of your films.

Look at my first video back in March 2020, the SUW (my first time wild-camping and thru-hiking) and you'll see the progress we've been making 🤓 (also as a hiker/adventurer 😎). Today I'm a bit busy, but I'll look at your channel tomorrow (I'll leave a comment). It looks very promising! 😊👌🏻 I think this video in Scotland turned out nice: ruclips.net/video/2-JeW-K2Eio/видео.htmlsi=d3n34TOiovvD-22K
@@alwaysforwardyt The wild weather definitely makes for a great story. Thanks for checking my channel. My style is a bit different from yours but I hope you like it! I'll check out your Scotland films. I have a couple from the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa. I love the mountains of Spain. I lived in Barcelona many years ago and used to explore the Pyrenees a lot.
I'm definitely going to watch those videos of the Pyrenees and Picos de Europa. My mother is from Barcelona, l lived there until l was 6 and we moved to Málaga. I'm sure you had a good time in Barcelona! OK, let's go and watch those videos 🤓
Very helpful tips! Could I ask what kind of jacket I could wear for minus 20 Celsius? Would be a good help.
If you don't want to wear many layers, in fall, the "Mountain Hardware Absolute Parka" will be available in the US website (not available at the moment because it's summer, l believe. l asked "Mountain Hardware" and l was told it'll be available in fall). That would be my top pick. Link here: www.mountainhardwear.ca/en/p/mens-absolute-zero-parka-1898861.html l use the jacket you see in my videos, but l only manage because l wear many layers (it's a bit of a pain). l had that jacket before l started doing 'winter activities,' otherwise l would have bought the one from Mountain Hardware (last year, around Christmas, it was on sale down to 40%). Otherwise, "Bergans from Norway" and the equivalent from "Fjallraven" will do also great: www.bergans.com/en/p/2782-expedition-down-unisex-parka/21765 l hope this helps!
Excellent!!! Thankx a lot!!
My pleasure. It is an interesting topic. I'm sure others are also interested in the video so it was a win-win 😊
Glad you have uploaded again.
With so much encouragement, I'm going to have to upload more often 😅 Thanks! 🙌🏻
Where did you learn to cross country ski, and when did you start pulling a sledge?
Take a look at these 4 videos. You'll see my humble beginning. Eirik taught me (very well) the basics of x-country ski, winter camping, emergency shelters, fuel stove operation, etc. ruclips.net/video/D6lmjkdNgc4/видео.html
