My name is Melody. I am the mom of four girls in our blended family of six. I have been a secular homeschooler since 2013.
I started this channel to share my experiences as well as to step out of my comfort zone, try something new, do something challenging and to learn from and connect with all of you. As a secular homeschooler it can be difficult to find curriculum. I hope that you will find new and exciting secular curriculum options on this channel.

What a precious message! ❤️ Wow. Thank you for bravely sharing your story. You're right; there's almost no information on the internet regarding this issue, and it's really sad. The stories in the comments on this video make me cry, but I'm so grateful for your sweet message of encouragement! There IS hope and help for struggling mamas. ❤
Oh my gosh, Yes!!! I am religious but I 100% agree with you. I found this video because I am looking specifically for secular curriculum. I feel like most "Christian" curriculums are biased, deceptive, & just down right wrong in many ways. If I want to teach my kids my views on God & all that, then I'll do that separate from their curriculum. Half the time, I don't agree with their theology to begin with. I have so many thoughts on all this after leaving a church that pretended to be one thing but turned out to be legalistic & boardering on being a cult and they were SUPER into homeschooling in the worst way, IMO.
Unfortionately i have to count art supplies to our budget the year. We go through SO MUCH. Way more than we should. My kinds lose pencils and scatter them Break the crayons and then refuse to use them. (I am actually looking into getting a mold to melt the crayons and create a shaped crayon. Lol). I am having to buy pens, pencils, crayons, at least twice a month if not more. I am trying to figure out a better way. My kids just dont know how to leave stuff alone. No matter how much i tell them or fuss at them about it. 😢
I'm so happy I found your channel. I'm Agnostic too. I'm going to be homeschooling my 6 year old from January 2025. I'm really enjoying your videos. Thank you!
I agree. I think you stated it well. I’m looking for pure secular material.
Christian conservative here…you are my people! I don’t think I’ve related to anyone else’s content more than yours! I just show love to everyone. I have had many people unfriend me due to my beliefs and that is insane to me!
Thank you for some of that encouragement, that its ok to be a different kind of school. My kids are neurospicy and we really need to do things differently. I am happy with their progress however so I think we are good 😊
It really sounds like the Public School System is much more closely aligned with your moral & political beliefs. 🤔
Interesting statement. Based on?
Based on your obsession with race, your support of overly intrusive government and your disdain for religion. 🤔 It's just my opinion of course, so not worth a lot, but that's my take from the video. 👍
@tdeath9813 ok. Thanks for sharing your take regarding my obsessions 😂
If I ever took a nap, went and washed my hair or sat and read a book my ex would guilt trip me, ignore me, sulk and give me the cold shoulder for hours after. It got to a point where the only time he'd leave me alone is when I'd be walking around the house non stop cleanup after him and the kids or making them food. He would lay around A LOT and look at his phone and call it taking care of the kids.
I’m glad to hear he is your EX. Nobody needs people like that in their lives.
I always look you up occasionally to see if you've posted a new vid (: Glad to see a new one.
Thank You For discussion about this book
What do you advise me after reading this book ??
If you liked it and are wanting more, just get the next level.
@HomeschoolHappyHour what is the next level
Probably Geometry. Not sure off the top of my head- but it should be easy to figure out
I'm an adult, learning, relearning concepts...I really could care less about what cardboard is used fir the cover or how cute each page looks. My concerns are the really confusing and obnoxious, time wasting, typos in this book! I wouldn't recommend it.
Yes❤
the quote you say won you over - I wish I'd been told that in school (i'm almost 58 now and hated history and looking back I feel it was very slanted) I'm thinking about getting these books LOL! for myself - they sure are pricey though!
There are 7 mistakes in this book . There is a reddit somewhere that says which ones are wrong. This is an amazing book !!¡
So I have the first set of books is there anywhere you can recommend online to get activity books or worksheets that go along with these? I really like them but I feel like there needs to be some type of worksheet or something
I’m sorry, I don’t have a quick answer for you.
I’m wondering if you have looked at Guest Hollow’s US History?
I haven’t. Thank you for mentioning it for people to consider!
Good topic! I feel like if s community isn't inclusive, it's not for me.
You make learning fun, keep up the great work!
I agree with everything you said… except for telling Max that no one wants to hear him drinking outta the faucet. 😂 Poor Max.
💯💯totally agree with this
Ding, ding, ding! I agree as well. We've been trying to pull in another friend's kids into some homeschool group activities we participate in. They just don't engage and allow their kids to do anything outside of their house. We feel bad for the kids as they are really socially inept / not progressing very well because the parents are like you described. Just checking the box of "homeschooling" but not really participating at all in their children's progress..
Nice seeing you again :) I agree with you on your points here :)
Your hair is beautiful!
Thank you
What you described is not unschooling
Ok. Can you give us a more accurate description?
@@HomeschoolHappyHour Loving your videos! I know people who were 'unschooled', their parents literally did nothing towards their education. I also know people who do unschooling - and it is very very different from what you're taking about. Child directed learning can be used in all kids of teaching and learning styles... but unschooling, as I understand it and as I know many people use the term, is specifically not following any kind of curriculum or having any standards/expectations. I agree with the original commenter here.
Thank you for taking the time to give us another description.
I got this book from Amazon and I learned about early people in America I checked my knowledge and when I checked the answer, I got a similar answer but some of them are the same.
From a secular homeschool household that also practices religion: I feel really aligned to a secular homeschool education style to give my kids space to learn content without a religious lens (too many curricula will actively edit history and science for a religious reason which is icky to me) Then we practice our faith in a way that shares our adult beliefs with our kids without forcing their beliefs. If my kids were in a public school, they wouldn’t necessarily have a singular faith pressed on them everyday and we try to emanate that in our home education. I feel like my approach is definitely not typical but I would say it is very intentional. Hope that might explain just one perspective of a secular home education within a religious household. 🤗 love this conversation glad to hear everyone’s thoughts.
I'm catholic and I use secular curriculum. There's no religious influence on my schooling. I do not force my belief on my kids. My 16 yr old considers herself an atheist and doesn't go to church with me. I applaud you for your efforts to address this in a respectable way lol i can see you trying not to be offensive. And also for allowing your kids to decide on their own
This is SUCH an insightful and helpful review video. Thank you!
Ballala Deva😅😅😅
I stubbled across your video scrolling through my feed and i love that you cover different topics. I like how to talk about Secular Homeschooling. Am new to this homeschooling style. Don't worry about feeling like crap, lately i been feeling out of it. I know it's my body telling me i need to slow down and rest it out. I was recommended that book Wild and Free 🎉
So interesting. Totally makes sense! I'm a pretty devout Christian but our little is around people from a wide variety of belief systems regularly. In a given week he has playdates with Hindus, Jains, Iraqi Muslim refugy who don't speak English... And several more groups. It's so fun! Thanks for this!
Such an interesting topic. I'm new to the homeschool world Progressive Christianity is totally different than being a liberal. The politics are separate from the theology, though they often correlate I would assume secular homeschool in a Christian family would be the philosophy of education rather than Biblical. It kinda makes sense. As Americans we separate parts of life more than other places. I kinda grew up keeping education separate from church. It seems very possible. Going to church and claiming Christianity does not make someone Christian (I grew up going to church and by parents who claimed to be Christian but looking back, I absolutely did not grow up in a Christian home... It's an interesting difference but it's very real and maybe not understood) Listening to the second half now.
Thank you for the reassurance. I'm 5 weeks into homeschooling with my second grader and I'm constantly worried that I'm not teaching him enough.
Going to check this out! Thanks!
My baby is only a few months old rn, and since I'm interested in homeschooling, this is good to know. I've definetly been thinking about getting some kind of child development course at the community college at least though, I think that would be more relevant than a degree specifically for teaching.
Who is the prisoner ?
My oldest homeschooler
@@HomeschoolHappyHour Thank you so much for your videos. I am homeschooling my son with autism in germany. I am following the curriculum you have posted.
If I worked we would be wealthy but instead we make choices that make our life sustainable with less consumption because our priority is me staying home with our kids and eventually homeschooling. It's a privilege to be able to make that choice because I live in America but its not a privilege to align our values with our priorities. Anyone can do that.
Replying to myself, kinda lame...its the same thing I get when my family calls me "lucky" because I went to college and worked and found the resources available to everyone to go to school debt free etc. No I'm not lucky, I worked hard and made good decisions. It's insulting when people reduce your accomplishments to "luck" and "privilege".
Omg your poor daughter. I would have been so frustrated. At 14 I would say she did excellent as well, especially with such a huge gap in time.
She had a really good attitude about it ❤️ I would have been really upset if it was me too.
I’m glad i watched your video and thank you for sharing with us. My 5 years old daughter just became Kinder student this fall and the first 3 weeks she came back and told me she cried at school because she misses me. I thought that was weird and her friend and teacher also told me that she cried in the classroom and at the park. After I watched your video I realized that she just tired of being school for that long and she’ve already knew everything she is leaning now and she may feel bored in class but she is still trying to repeat everyday with things that she knew. I do parent helping every Tuesday and I know what you are talking about the leaning progress is slow because teacher has to cover every students not just one. I’m thinking just to have her go to K in public school for fun and will pull her back to homeschool because I want her to be advanced follow as how fast her learning skills is and we can learn much more other stuff while the time she uses all day just to learn couple stuff at school. I hope you get my meaning. But, my only concern is I have only her and will that affect her social skills? She is a funny girl and we also have Gym class, online class and piano class going on as for now besides her school.
If you put effort into isolating her and avoid interacting with people outside of your home you will have a problem and her social skills will suffer. Otherwise, she’ll be fine. Actually- she’ll probably be great! Research shows that homeschooled children have excellent social and emotional skills. These skills exceed those of their public school peers. The “social skills problem” that people talk about as it relates to homeschooling is a myth supported only by extreme circumstances.
@@HomeschoolHappyHour thank you soooo much for your help. Your response gives me hope and confidence to homeschool my child. I truly appreciate!!!!
thank you for this video!! such a nice surprise
Hey, my question is how does the CLEP credit count towards high school credit 18:33 would you be able to give a quick run through on how this proves works and what can you told the administrators at the school
We create our own transcripts. I count the CLEP toward her high school transcript. I don’t have to tell the administrators anything. Most colleges accept CLEP credits toward college classes.
@@HomeschoolHappyHour Thank you very much for responding. I am a high school student at a charter school and I am going to take the Spanish 1-2 test for Clep this has cleared up a lot however I have a follow up question because I’m not sure how to go about transcripts and how can I make it show on my high school transcript so I don’t have to take Spanish anymore. Thank you again
Have you found anything similar for Spanish?
Not specifically. Spanish resources have been a lot easier to come by so I never searched for anything like this.
Are you in the foothills of Denver Metro? We have a cross entering the mountains. If you are, have you found and secular communities you can recommend? Thanks!
Unfortunately, I can’t help. I’m in WA state.
Also feels like if the curriculum is not religious and conservative then it's secular and progressive...😮💨 Why does it seem like everything opperates in extremes lol.
It is so frustrating when you ask for guidance on Facebook groups. I feel like everyone is yelling at you for trying to push my kid too soon. It really was starting to get to me and I was starting to feel like I should just send her back to school if I can’t do it correctly. I finally just logged out of Facebook and stopped asking for help.
Social Media “support groups” can be so unsupportive! It’s ok to ask for help, but I understand why you stopped. I did too 🫤
I’ve really enjoyed your videos! Have a great school year!

Thanks 👍
I'm struggling so much since my 9 year old is still at a point where they can't read and struggle with identifying letters and sounds. My kids are homeschooled, and I feel like I'm failing them and feel like maybe public school will be best. Thank you for this video
If you are struggling and have concerns about where your child is at academically or developmentally, please remember: it is ALWAYS OK to reach out for help from an outside resource. Depending on where you live, the public school resources may be available to you. Homeschool doesn’t mean that you can’t get help or feedback. ❤️
