    If I ever took a nap, went and washed my hair or sat and read a book my ex would guilt trip me, ignore me, sulk and give me the cold shoulder for hours after. It got to a point where the only time he'd leave me alone is when I'd be walking around the house non stop cleanup after him and the kids or making them food. He would lay around A LOT and look at his phone and call it taking care of the kids.

      @@HomeschoolHappyHour Loving your videos! I know people who were 'unschooled', their parents literally did nothing towards their education. I also know people who do unschooling - and it is very very different from what you're taking about. Child directed learning can be used in all kids of teaching and learning styles... but unschooling, as I understand it and as I know many people use the term, is specifically not following any kind of curriculum or having any standards/expectations. I agree with the original commenter here.

    From a secular homeschool household that also practices religion: I feel really aligned to a secular homeschool education style to give my kids space to learn content without a religious lens (too many curricula will actively edit history and science for a religious reason which is icky to me) Then we practice our faith in a way that shares our adult beliefs with our kids without forcing their beliefs. If my kids were in a public school, they wouldn’t necessarily have a singular faith pressed on them everyday and we try to emanate that in our home education. I feel like my approach is definitely not typical but I would say it is very intentional. Hope that might explain just one perspective of a secular home education within a religious household. 🤗 love this conversation glad to hear everyone’s thoughts.

    I'm catholic and I use secular curriculum. There's no religious influence on my schooling. I do not force my belief on my kids. My 16 yr old considers herself an atheist and doesn't go to church with me. I applaud you for your efforts to address this in a respectable way lol i can see you trying not to be offensive. Such an interesting topic. I'm new to the homeschool world Progressive Christianity is totally different than being a liberal. The politics are separate from the theology, though they often correlate I would assume secular homeschool in a Christian family would be the philosophy of education rather than Biblical. It kinda makes sense. As Americans we separate parts of life more than other places. I kinda grew up keeping education separate from church. It seems very possible. Going to church and claiming Christianity does not make someone Christian (I grew up going to church and by parents who claimed to be Christian but looking back, I absolutely did not grow up in a Christian home... It's an interesting difference but it's very real and maybe not understood) Listening to the second half now.

    I’m glad i watched your video and thank you for sharing with us. My 5 years old daughter just became Kinder student this fall and the first 3 weeks she came back and told me she cried at school because she misses me. I thought that was weird and her friend and teacher also told me that she cried in the classroom and at the park. After I watched your video I realized that she just tired of being school for that long and she’ve already knew everything she is leaning now and she may feel bored in class but she is still trying to repeat everyday with things that she knew. I do parent helping every Tuesday and I know what you are talking about the leaning progress is slow because teacher has to cover every students not just one. I’m thinking just to have her go to K in public school for fun and will pull her back to homeschool because I want her to be advanced follow as how fast her learning skills is and we can learn much more other stuff while the time she uses all day just to learn couple stuff at school. I hope you get my meaning. But, my only concern is I have only her and will that affect her social skills? She is a funny girl and we also have Gym class, online class and piano class going on as for now besides her school.

    • @HomeschoolHappyHour
      @HomeschoolHappyHour 2 месяца назад

      If you put effort into isolating her and avoid interacting with people outside of your home you will have a problem and her social skills will suffer. Otherwise, she’ll be fine. Actually- she’ll probably be great! Research shows that homeschooled children have excellent social and emotional skills. These skills exceed those of their public school peers. The “social skills problem” that people talk about as it relates to homeschooling is a myth supported only by extreme circumstances.

      When my girls were little everyone told me “you don’t need a curriculum at this age.” It was really annoying and I didn’t find it helpful. Having homeschooled now for over a decade… they were right 🫤. Knowing what your child is interested in and encouraging the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic through these interests and daily interactions is key! I would strongly recommend books such as “Mommy, teach me” (old but good) or other books that are for adults, about appropriate child development and activities are going to help so much more than a curriculum. That being said: as your child gets older, one of my FAVORITE curriculum choices for early elementary is Lightning Literature.

    I’m so grateful I found this video. My oldest is going to start preschool next year. I had her signed up for a Christian preschool. But we are not religious at all, but I also don’t want her getting exposed to some of the newer progressive sexual identity type education they are now teaching in public schools either and confusing her. So I feel stuck. I just don’t want her indoctrinated period, by both religion and the newer progressive ideology. But I feel totally alone because literally everyone in my small town is religious. I don’t have any connections, I didn’t know secular homeschooling was an option. I’ll keep watching more of your videos to hopefully get some pointers, I’m in the super beginning stages of all this. You took the words right out of my mouth about church’s/friends pulling you in, another fear of mine letting my daughter join a Christian preschool. I want to just focus on eduction, and having a good morals simply because it’s the right thing to do… ? 🧐
