Dr Helen Evans-Howells - GP and Allergy Specialist with personal experience of children with allergies
Who knew that my son would inspire my career? When Ethan developed milk and nut allergies as a baby, I quickly realised I needed to improve my knowledge. I undertook the Masters in Allergy and from there went on to work with the fantastic Paediatric allergy team at Southampton Hospital, chair the primary care group of the British Society of Allergy and be asked to lecture across the UK and the world! I'm now a trustee for the charity Anaphylaxis UK and chair of the Clinical and Scientific Panel.
I have a private allergy clinic which is based at Sandbanks Clinic in Poole. I am able to offer virtual consultations and I have a free, closed Facebook support group where I am on hand to help.

Today was our first experience of chemo from a patient’s perspective and also wearing the cold cap in an attempt to preserve a part of myself. Cold cap- ok- nowhere near as bad as I feared. Hello, I wanted to ask something. I need to have root canal treatment at the dentist, but I have never had local anesthesia before. My doctor told me that I should do an allergy test and gave me the medicine he used (ultracain) how is the allergy test done for this drug?
That wouldn’t normally be needed. Allergies to medication are highly unlikely if you have never had the medication before- they tend to occur on second or repeated exposure and we wouldn’t normally screen for drug allergies - it’s not actually that easy to test for. I would ask your dentist for advice. Drug allergy testing is complex and only done in Hospital usually. A referral would be declined if someone has never had the drug. Unless there’s a really good reason they are concerned you will react.
@@drhelenallergy I had a dust allergy in the past. Does local anesthesia trigger allergy?
@@philoaugust no. And a dust allergy or food allergies doesn’t put you at risk of drug allergy
