DJ's Machine Shed
Добавлен 28 янв 2013
Hello! My name is Dave (otherwise known as DJ) and welcome to my machine shed. I'd like to consider myself a shade tree mechanic. I enjoy working on pretty much anything with an engine and wheels. I was/am an amateur motorcycle racer, I tried my hand at dirt track racing (and failed miserably) and now I'm in the middle of my most ambitious and challenging project yet - putting a 1951 Ford F1 pickup cab & bed onto a 2000 Ford Explorer frame - AND making it an extended cab. Wish me luck!
1951 Ford F1 Restomod - F1 to Explorer Chassis - Part 19 - Project Update

I measure and cut off the front frame horns. Then trim the inner fenders to see if I can get the F1 core support and fenders mounted. It's not as easy as I had hoped!
1951 Ford F1 Restomod - F1 to Explorer Chassis - Part 16 - Front End
Просмотров 5 тыс.3 года назад
After a few weeks of trying to figure out how to mount the F1 front end to the Explorer frame, I've decided I will cut off the front frame horns of the Explorer frame and weld in a new, lower frame section that I can use to mount the F1 radiator core support to and also use to mount the front bumper.

This weekend I work on figuring out the final location of the cab and how I'm going to attach the F1 cab to the Explorer firewall.
1951 Ford F1 Restomod - F1 to Explorer Chassis - Part 14 - Mounting the Doors
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.3 года назад
1 step forward, 2 steps back. I finally got the door hinge screws so I could mount the doors. Unfortunately, they didn't fit! I had to take out the rectangular tube support frame and grind off all the tack welds holding the rocker panels to the back of the cab. Basically undoing all the work I did a few weeks ago. Ugh! Now that I have the doors mounted, the gaps lined up and the doors welded in...
1951 Ford F1 Restomod - F1 to Explorer Chassis - Part 13 - Shortening the bed
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.3 года назад
This weekend I worked on shortening the F1 bed by 11" to make room for the extended cab and to get the rear wheels to be centered on the rear fenders.

1951 Ford F1 Restomod - F1 to Explorer Chassis - Part 7 - Cutting out the dash of the 49 cab.
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 года назад
So, plans have changed. I decided to keep the 49 cab and use that as the main cab for this build. I'm bracing up the cab in order to cut out the dash and drill out the spot welds for the firewall and side cowls. Unfortunately I ran out of welding wire so I moved on the cutting out the dash with minimal bracing welded in. Tomorrow I will get more welding wire and finish welding in the bracing, a...

What do you think about using the Explorer door panels on the F1?!? Remember, this is a resto-mod build so I'm not trying to keep things factory original.

I plan on using a hydroboost setup instead.
It’s not an easy swap, if it was easy every other person would be doing it. And it’s easy to talk crap like that when they’re not doing it themselves.
You make anymore headway on this?
YES! I moved this project over to my new channel - Goofy Foot Garage. Check it out!
@@DJsMachineShed found it! Thanks!
I watch a guy that uses s10 bed cut out and move you box sides in so they don't hit the wheel wells.
You could take out a few inches and reweld the inner fender and dont cut all the way through just bend and reweld the inner fender.
This is the definition of insanity lol I love it.
any new updates on the build ?
YES! I moved this project over to my new channel - Goofy Foot Garage. Check it out!
Is this the same for a 55 f100?
No, 48-52 are the F1 generation. 53 thru 56 was the start of the F100 generation. Two totally different models.
@@goofyfootgarage3343 would this swap to explorer be easier or the crown vic swap?
Maybe paint the inside of the door an offset color to the door panel and then a trim piece (carpet or door card) on the bottom to compliment the panel
Why wouldn’t you just pull the body off. Install the f1 body on the frame. Thats the way everyone else does it. Its so much easier
The F1 cab doesn't have a floor, as you would see in the next video. It was previously put on a Ranger floorpan. And not everyone else just puts the F1 cab on the new frame, I've seen several people that have done similar swaps to what I'm doing.
Lordy that’s terrible
good morning,I'm also riding on f1 ford ranger v6 1996
Im doing almost the same thing. .Mine is a 52 f1 on a 97 Mercury Mountaineer.. I have videos on IG of the progress..maybe itll give you some ideas...and yes the 52 is narrower, found that out the hard way..Bigblockglen
I wish you had the videos here on RUclips. I don't have an IG account, nor do I plan on starting one anytime soon. When you say the F1 is narrower, are you talking axle width or wheelbase?
I'm pretty sure that's not a 2004 explorer
You are correct, never said it was. It's a 2000 Ford Explorer.
hi this is corey from coreys access. i need you to disconnect the neg battery terminal for 10 minutes then hook it back up and let me know what happens
Not sure why you'd want me to do this now. The problem has been resolved by replacing the body wiring harness that melted do to an exhaust leak.
what happen to you i have been waiting for more info . im doing the same Is project
My apologizes. You know how somehow time just gets away from you? This summer just flew by, and I had a lot of other things to work on that took precedence over this little project. But fear not, I will be back at it again soon! Hopefully in the very near future. I hope your project is going well, I'd love to see progress pictures or videos!
I cant wait to see running this awesome Ford truck
That's awesome truck beautiful video
Measure your frame before you do anything.
You da man...
Great progress.
Thank you! Your Fat Betty F250 was a major inspiration for me to start this build. I've watched that build over and over again, trying to get some pointers and learn from what you have done. Now that fall is upon us, I should finally have some time to get back on this build again!
I can't wait to see that truck done
Wow. Glad it was found, but sorry you had to fix it.
Looks like a fun project. I had cab alignment issues on my 47 F1 custom build too so check that for sure and then re-check it a couple times.
Thank you! That's what's holding me back, I want to make sure when I weld the F1 cab to the Explorer floorpan/firewall, that's it's square all the way around.
I like it!
They may use wheel spacers to bump the wheel out to their desired location.
Great! I have an almost stock 50' F6 Dump I'm working on. Debating on keeping it classic, it's a little scary to drive, or going restomod so I can justify backup cameras, power steering and brakes, etc....
Love the project. Keep it up and I'll be watching. As explained in Ep. 18 I have similar project going. Good ideas coming from you and a few other RUclipsr's. As far as your Subaru goes...I have a love/hate relationship with the 'Flat-Four'. By nature of the horizontal layout of water and oil channels through the cylinders good ole' gravity keeps liquids always touching the head gaskets even at rest. Eventually, nearly always between 90-110K miles the gasket gives out. Best to change them with as good a quality gasket (NOT FELPRO) as you can find at about the point you normally change timing belts (100K miles).
Thank you! I'm looking forward to getting back on this project and making some much needed headway with getting the F1 cab located and welded in it's final location on the Explorer floorpan/firewall. I've also watched a few other peoples videos that have done similar swaps, but none really show how to really locate the cab on the Explorer chassis. I've seen quite a few F100 conversion videos, but only 1 or 2 doing it with an F1. Which is why I'm so hesitant on just welding the cab in place, hoping I don't screw something up! As for the Subaru motor, I've rebuilt a few of them and I always install good quality MLS head gaskets. Like you said, most OEM Subaru head gaskets last about 90-100k miles - about the same time I would change the timing belt. There are a lot of reasons why I love Subaru's: knowing their weak spots like the head gaskets and timing belt and how to fix/replace them, the simplistic nature and layout of their motors, the TONS of available used and after market parts, the fact that almost every Subaru model from 1999 to 2011+ uses the same 2.5l engine - or some iteration of it, and they're AWD! Which is a huge plus in the winter here in MN.
@@DJsMachineShed Ditto on Subarus in the great white North. I was stationed in Grand Forks for 7 'WINTERS' and couldn't have done without Suby
Can't wait to see her come together!!!!
I await with baited breath Love to see it coming together
I'm enjoying your video's. I'm about where you were with my conversion when you were at Part 7 or 8. The difference is I'm doing it with a 1955 Chevy 3200 (long bed) and a 2008 4.0L Ranger with only 48K miles. The Ranger had been rolled but the frame and front end were still straight. I had a full rusted out '55 and an extra 'good' condition cab to play with. You can't imagine how many of the important measurements line up between it and the Ford. Little by little. I'm real interested in how you squeeze your firewall into such a narrow spot. Luckily mine so far is fitting well but as usual I've got my own gremlins to deal with. Nothing is easy...that's why it's so much fun! Keep putting out your video's and I'll keep 'Liking' them. Enjoy your summer.
Great job so far. Wondering how you're going to lift your hood? Original hinge are now covered. where do Ford hinges mount? Looking good!
Thank you! The F1 hood hinges mount to the side cowls, you'll see mounting holes in the new side cowls I welded on. Getting the hood to stay open is another matter. The F1 hoods were held open by lifting springs mounted on the firewall. Now that the F1 firewall is gone, I'm going to have to find another way to hold the hood open.
I'm learning alot from you and love seeing this truck come together Keep on trucking
Thank you! I'm glad my work on this project is able to help someone else with theirs.
I just found your videos Thank you for sharing this build with me I'm learning alot from you. I'm putting a 51 on a 89 150 4x4. Can't wait to see both of our projects complete. Nothing is ever easy
Thank you for watching! I'm glad my videos can help someone else with their project, that was kind of my secondary intent when I started making/posting these. Good luck with your project, I would love to see progress photos.
Nice videos. I like they way you are working out the issues as they pop up. I had a thought, you could take those inner fenders and box them out where you cut away the steel. Basically, if there is room, the new boxed out section would be a little closer to the tires. It would look clean and finished. Keep keepin' on!
Yeah, If I have the time and patience, that's what I might do. I've see a few other swaps like this where they basically cut away all of the inner fender, just leaving the top rail to mount the fenders to. That seems very flimsy to me, so I will probably do some boxing in to help keep some rigidity to them.
Keep it up coming along good, try to keep checking space in the cab at the steering wheel to the seat and make sure you have enough space to sit comfortably, made the decision that was more important than having the wheels in the fenders exactly perfect.
Glad to find your channel 👍 looking forward to updates on this F1
My only worry I have about this is the removal of the front radiator support since most modern vehicles instead of just relying on the frame like old 40s to 80s cars it's a hybrid of structural integrity between the body and the frame so it's better to over build it like adding some fish plates over your new radiator cradle joins to make sure you don't loose any strength going forward. As my father said "it's better to over build something than to under build it and end up in a early grave".
Pretty cool thus far, my only issue is no playlist youtube mobile is such a pain to watch without a playlist, also this is just a minor error but this is the second part 10 please change it for the playlist ;)
I did the same 2 into 1 conversion but I put a 54 body on to it
Thank you for walking us thru this so that we can learn from your experiences.
Thank you. I just hope all my work, mistakes & progress can help someone else out with their build. There are a few guys out there that have done the Explorer/F100 frame swap, but I could only find one guy that actually made a video of his Explorer/F1 frame swap, and he just quickly goes over what he did... not going too in depth on what was actually done and how he did it.
Is this the same for a 55 f100?
I spend for the best brand of wire the cheap stuff is pretty bad. Same with body filler.
Make sure you save any usable body parts you don’t use. They’re hard to find and fetch pretty good price on eBay. Of course I’m in Canada so harder to find up here.
For sure! I have a pile of parts I probably won't be using that I will be selling when this project is done!
You could close out a bit of the fender openings.
Yeah, I have to figure out what tire size I'll go with before doing anything like that.
Wow, putting it all on Ford Explorer chassis. I'll be following to see how you go.
Nice recovery. You're on the right track with all the replacements. Working on a 49 Ford F1 as well.
Sorry to see your issues with the door alignment but your welding looks better!
Thanks! In hindsight I should have fit the doors before I did any welding to the cab. Live and learn!
This is starting to take shape...
Do it. The lower area will be hidden by the seat once door is shut. Too perfect of a fit not to try it.
