Whilst Pale Moons Rise - Generative Ambient Jam (NYX, Taiga, M32, DFAM, SubH, Deluge, BASTL Drum)

The jam is not the song… until it is. Deluge is sequencing all the bits. Generative sequences to both the NYX (pads) and Moog Mother 32 (Bells) Deluge is also sequencing the Pittsburgh Modular Taiga for the synth Bass. Moog DFAM is doing the staticky Drone (intro and throughout) with the Taiga sending a sample and hold to modulate it. Drums are a combo of Euclidean sequencing on the Deluge and ...

This is great! I wonder if this will help us diagnose the source of that "Deluge sound". It's like debugging. If we know the FM engine is correctly implemented and we still have it, we know it's not the oscillators. Maybe the filters or the reverb or the compressor? In principle, the Deluge should sound as good as say the Volca FM, but I've never been able to get that "width" out of it.
Thank you for sharing the latest news in the Deluge Community world!

connecting Deluge to Tascam model 12 to expand the i/o is my dream... :)
@@orkunbagatur5055 man I wish… the deluge is limited by the stereo out and single in tho. Still, if you’ve got even a little bit of other gear you like syncing up and playing with the deluge, the model 12 is the best!
@@oaklandghosts0510 totally agreed ! I still love my Model 12 but i'm pretty sure that the dev's will bring this feature in the near future ;) btw somebody have to shoot a video about 1.2 chopin and 1.3 upcoming feature for god sake 🙏 🤗those new permanent screen additions are great !!
@@orkunbagatur5055dude seriously! The screen update is the best! The stem exporting is also a game changer… maybe I’ll do a vid about that too. I love you can do it from arranger view and it’ll stem out individual tracks. Woulda been stoked about just getting loops! As someone who builds all my songs on the deluge that’s a HUGE feature!
@ stem export is crazy you’re definitely right man! i came from elektron world actually and im still waiting for my deluge to come :) next week ill dive straight into it and i added a mod dwarf to it ! it will be super crazy for me! 😬 my intention also is to produce all the stuff in deluge and it has x10 features than the new elektron boxes.. the community firmware just let me change my direction completely annd im pretty sure ill be very happy with that decision. many thanks for your super informative videos, ill be waiting for that chopin video from you 😉 cheers mate!

Frickin cool vibes here man. You're drum sequencing always kills. Seriously looking at the Taiga too btw.
Thanks man! I got real weird with the drums in this one lol. The Taiga is super cool and very versatile but def closer to a starter eurorack than a semi Modular. It can be pretty frustrating to learn at first, but every time I start a song I find something cool with it! I’m using it for the bass on this track, but also using its sample and hold and LFO to modulate other units. It really shines there! It’s so patchable using its modules with your other stuff unlocks a whole lot of versatility!
Wonderful harmonious waves! And when the beat kicked in after a couple minutes it really spiced it up, nice session!

Very good points. 👍👍 I'm sure you can have fun with these units for many years, and not caring about what is relevant. These instruments are just great, and now on top the Labyrinth. 🖤🖤🖤
They really are awesome! NGL - I REALLY want a Labyrinth....
I've just bought one today... Watching your video now, i'm feeling more nervous than you are ! Sure ! ...so suspensfulll....
If you've never built something like this before it's definitely intimidating! lol. I was super nervous.. but I got it all together mostly painlessly and it sounds awesome! you got this!
Yeah I think it’s helpful. Hard to say - Alessandro Cortini kind of jams and then publishes. And it’s amazing. Maybe the truth is that the jam is the song of you decide that it is. And more jams could be songs if we took that next step. Editing in writing, in film, and music can often be valuable and refine the end result into something more valuable. But we also take pieces of music that we poured great effort into and toss them into the river of “content” and watch it rush downstream never to be heard again. Another day passes and the flood of content continues. In this environment you are rewarded for quantity over quality, which is a shame. I would prefer to not hear from someone for two years and then have my mind blown with a tight, thoughtful, profound record. Perhaps one day the system will circle back around to rewarding that?
Oh man. Albums are an even deeper and more critical editing process. I don't know a band or producer that dosen't have at least 30 (good!) tracks to every 10 they actually put out. Actually, the reason I started my Song Sketch Playlist was to share some of those 'Demos' that would usually never see the light of day. That's one of the great things about the world we live in now! The ability to get eyes and ears on things - even it's at the expense of people having to separate the wheat from the chaff to find what they seek. I don't have anything against people posting jams in general, but I think anyone who posts a piece of work they've spent some time on is doing so seeking at least some form of positive reinforcement. So I do believe in showcasing your work in the best possible light. There are many genres (and artists) that thrive in a more improvisational 'jam' based approach, but I think one thing I see in the synth/gear/electronic music space is the barrier to entry is so easy now (in a good way! more people being able to more easily express themselves is always a good thing IMHO.) The gear, and even DAWs have progressed to a point where whipping up the bones to something really good can happen really fast - and to the hobbyist, or people with less musical experience it can be tempting to think they've done it! They've cracked the code! Or as they get a little further in their journey, it can be incredibly frustrating to get to the core loop quick and not have know-how or wherewithal to spin that out into a more cohesive composition. I don't know.. this is getting long. lol. These are just topics I'm interested in and interested in discussing with other people. What I do know, is I think a lot of people genuinely want to learn and grow and while I don't have all the answers (or maybe any at all! haha) I'm not interested in gatekeeping. I want to share my experience and inspire others to make awesome stuff! Cheers man!
@@oaklandghosts0510yeah I think you make a lot of great points! I have been there not that long ago in the beginner phase and it so true! Being stuck and not knowing how to finish. I think maybe I’m more insecure than most because it took me a few years to share anything at all. Now I’m finally doing that - but to your point I definitely curate! Trent Reznor actually talked about that at some point. That he makes a lot of crap that no one will ever hear, he isn’t afraid to make that, but he just publishes what he’s actually proud of. So yeah, you make a lot of good points.
Thank you man, I'm crying right now
oh man I'm definitely not tryna make people cry over here. lol. In a lot of ways this is just me trying to rationalize my own ideas. I think as humans we want to place labels and rules on things to better understand them, but at the same time in music and art especially it doesn't and shouldn't have any! I was trying to make a video in response to a question I get often (how to spin a loop out into a more cohesive composition) And the whole basis was gonna be about how important it is to jam, but that the jam wasn't the song... and then of course the song I was working on, the jam WAS the song and my whole thought process got thrown for a loop! ah well... the more we know the less we understand. we learn. we grow. we move forward! At least that's my hope!
@@oaklandghosts0510 It's all good. You are an inspiration. Two months ago i got me a Deluge, partly due to you 🙂
Sometimes I hear of bands that avoid “jamming” together and it usually surprises me. The most surprising was Captain Beefheart insisting that the Magic Band never jam. They learned to execute the songs rather like a classical ensemble: precisely as composed, every performance. Astonishing!
Haha. In one of my old bands we used to say ‘Jam is for toast’ 😂 we were also about execution.. but that was most certainly after already having jammed to figure the song out. Even if whoever the primary songwriter was who brought the song to the band had a very specific vision, there’s still inevitably some figuring out to do when other players get involved. Almost always for the better!
I’ve studied music in various roles for over a half century but am not at all sure that I know what “a jam” even is.
@@tracyharms3548 very good point. How do we even define what a jam is and how many different interpretations are there out there? I guess for me the loosest interpretation would be ‘unscripted.’ Exploratory play without expectation and limited boundaries. If I were jamming with my band, those limited boundaries might be: time signature, tempo, song key, and the instruments and players on hand. For the sake of this video and electronic music production more broadly, I’m thinking of a stage a little further along. You could certainly say I jamming the whole time I’m writing and trying to find Melodies and parts. But for the sake of this video I’m thinking about the jam as a being a place where I’ve established and or sequenced all the various parts and it’s time to start putting them together in a cohesive way. So I’ll jam to discover what the song thinks it wants to be.
if there are no rules, then we are free to do as we see fit in the creative space. Which you alluded to. I do not make songs. I do not enjoy that process of arranging, mixing, mastering. I enjoy the process of making noise and loosely tossing it together. it is my observation that there is an expectation that we are to finish and create songs. Case in point. When someone finds out you make music, "where can I go to hear your songs or what you make" Some would say as humans, we need to label things so we can relate. Do we? I choose to live without labels and have fun. I believe you are saying the same thing. If you want to make a song, make a song. If you want to jam, jam. Share whatever the process you wish to share. Rinse and repeat. It's the labeling, judging or gatekeeping of what one should do that gets in the way. My three pennies.
Excellent Points made! I agree completely. But I do think that, especially in the electronic music and gear space, the barrier to entry has never been easier. With the state of gear and even DAWs these days, it's never been easier to very quickly sketch out the bones of an idea. Even for those who have no music theory or musical experience. And that's not a knock! I think that's awesome! What a gift! I think a lot of those people genuinely seek to learn the process of spinning an idea out into a full song and it can be frustrating that getting to the idea is so easy and the rest seems elusive. I certainly don't have all the answers, but for those people, I'm trying to do the opposite of gatekeeping and share my experience so they can get where they want to go. But the truth is, there is no right or wrong way- and certainly no easy way. Thats the beauty and the frustration of being an artist! The key is discovering what it is you are trying to convey and not squeezing yourself into someone else's mold. Cheers!
maybe read the manual before you try doing a 'review'!
I'm really digging some of these semi-modular synths. I'm slowly offloading my eurorack gear for a few nice sounding modules that I can just play.
I’m really a big fan of semi-Modular over Modular. It’s kind of the best of both worlds. You still have some (and often times ALOT) of flexibility via a patch bay, but with the normaled signal path something you can play right out of the box and manipulate quite a bit with just the knobs and faders. Modular is definitely more flexible, but as someone who writes songs I just want to get to something quicker without having to spend half an hour patching just to get a sound.
I got the two tier lot, Mother-32 and DFAM... now I want the Subharmonicon and a third party 3 tier frame
Yup. Unfortunately bundling it yourself and finding a 3rd party stand is the only way to go now. Totally worth it tho! They play VERY nice together!
@@simonvoigt8261 you could always get a Subharmonicon and labyrinth and put it them in a second two tier stand 😉(I’m kinda jonsing for a labyrinth myself…)
You can no longer buy the three tier studios :(
Ya, I heard they were going to stop selling them as a bundle right before I got mine. I was on many wait lists but decided to jump on a good deal for a used one after one of the retailers told me they were discontinued. 😢you can still find some used bundles out there but they’re selling pretty high ($$) now…
@@oaklandghosts0510 I think since they have now five units in this format it would make it too complicated to sell fixed 3-tier studios. They still produce the single units and now the Moog Sound Studio Accessory Kit, so everyone can set up his Moog Studio at his own choice.
is the sample being streamed from the Deluge? It sounds bit reduced (in a good way)
It is yes. Bit of decimation and some filtering and a touch of delay/verb.
@@oaklandghosts0510 all in the deluge? As a non-owner I don't know the level of effecting and decimation that can be done in-machine. Thanks!
@ the decimation and bit crush are both (I think) pretty good. Also a good suite of low pass and High Pass filters (or blending the too) also has an ok EQ and even compression now. I really like the delay and the reverb (a newer reverb was added recently.) Other FX include phaser, flanger, saturation, chorus and stereo chorus, and grain. The Deluge is a super capable all in one box. I’m using it to sequence some of my other gear as well as using internal synths and drums (and samples) for this piece, but I totally could have built a track all on the deluge alone. It’s my favorite and most indispensable piece of gear - hands down!
Very nice
Thank you! 🙏
What’s the difference between the original vs reissue?
Not much. They did a version 2 as well and that one had an expanded patch bay and a different reverb with a little more control but this one is a re-issue of the original version 1 (a lot of people preferred the reverb on the v1) main difference is the re-issue is USB powered and the ins/outs are in the patchbay TRS style as opposed to 1/4 inch. I believe it was possible on the original to also patch directly into the reverb to use just the reverb on other gear (that’s not possible on this version)
@ Thank you. I have the original. The original doesn’t have switches on the top right. Wondering if the round is the same
@ aww yes! I think on the original they were dip switches on the top top? It’s just for setting midi, duo/mono mode and legato control.
@ I also did a sound exploration video with a few different sound examples, if you wanna compare how it sounds to the original.

So great to see some Nyx in action. Would patching VCO2 out -> CV1 in give you FM? And to get noise, do you patch noise out -> In 2 ? Does that replace VCO2?
There’s actually a master toggle under the master tune knob to sync the oscillators. Then you can use the the detune fader to get FM.
@@oaklandghosts0510 That's great. I missed the oscillator sync. It has it all :)
I'm coming back to this because it came across my feed again and I wanted to add something I recently figured out, that may assist other newbs like me. First I will preface this by saying I'm not a professional musician and I am fairly new to electronic music. The realization is this: I was royally screwing up gain staging with the Deluge and supplementary synths. The recent addition of the VU meter (thank you, you gorgeous community developers) helped me figure out why my mixes were getting muddy or over blown and clipped, in particular when I brought external synths into the Deluge for further processing like my Nymphes or Plinky. I was typically hovering in the Deluge scale of 0-50 north of 40 because things sounded really quiet truth is post amplification was the real issue once I tied into a decent mixer I could get all the amp I needed and turn the internal Deluge volumes way down like kicks at 25 for example. Try it! For additional background the Deluge outputs consumer line level which is quieter than commercial so if your post deluge amp game is off upgrade that and your "sound" will be transformed. I use an 802VLZ4 and I can recommend this mixer for adding more than sufficient quiet amplification (another bonus is a +6db boost if you use the XLR outs to your speakers.)
Thanks so much for this vid. Watched it before mine arrived and it helped a LOT. Would've been very confused at the stage of needing to split the PCBS otherwise! ❤❤

@@grandevalise3254 ya I'm really impressed with how the NYX sounds. Working on a second track I stared with it now. Going a lil more ambient and pushing its crazy reverb!
Great pitch for your channel! I always click like and subscribe on clickbait videos. Oh no, wait, I mean dislike and report.
Clickbait? Gasp! What clickbait? The title says these are my thoughts. My thoughts (as stated in the video) are that the M4 mini is great for Logic Pro and a massive upgrade over most setups but that I don't care because most of what I do now is outside the box. Those are my thoughts. They are what were offered. I even answered the question in the title card. I'm not sure what expectations were not met.
No need for background music. It sucks.
@@Klaas-g3t music is simply a matter of opinions and taste. The former of which you appear to have many, the latter of which you clearly have none 🤷♂️
@@oaklandghosts0510 "music is simply a matter of opinions and taste." And making music is a matter of skill.
@@Klaas-g3t Indeed. Of which, in addition to wit and the aforementioned taste, you appear to be in short supply. Nonetheless, the algorithm thanks you for your engagement. 🙏
The artistry of how the music works with the words is stunning.
Thank you. I was very intent in trying to capture the tone and melancholy of the monologue. I hope I’ve done it justice.
Hello, I'm David and I am the ghost in the machine.
Cheers David! I hope the soundscape feels fitting. I tried to capture the tone.
Man this track is great. So many awesome layers to it. Love the drum beat you put together. The arpeggiations, you should definitely release this one.
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback!!
LOL what a scam! 😂

Sooo disappointed this wasn’t a comprehensive review of the base model Mac Mini M4. I can’t seem to find a good review about using it for a DAW, anywhere. I do Pop and R&B. My track count is usually around 120 with everything in the box. FX’s on most tracks. I’ve been using a 12 year old i7 Dell and I want to jump over to the Mac. BTW, I started out dawless and slowly moved into using them. Have no desire to go back. But, I’m glad it’s working out for you.
@@samson7842 for what it’s worth, we’ve had no problems working in logic with any of the apple silicon. Our primary mix engineer has been using and m1 MacBook Pro and def includes heavy fx and synth VSTs. I don’t think we get up around 120 tracks (which.. my guy.. is bonkers!!) but we def get in the 40s often and we’ve had no problems whatsoever. The new m4 is even better in my tests so far, but if your track count is really that high I’d def go m4 Pro or higher (with the max on the MacBook Pro maybe)
@ I don’t hit 120 with every song. And, honestly, I haven’t done it recently because I’ve been doing instrumentals and more stripped down productions. But, I’ve done it enough with vocals to want to make sure my computer can do it when the need arises. I tend to do a lot of stacking of vocals on my hooks to get that big, 90’s, Jodeci/Boys2Men style sound on the choruses. So, most of it is stuff like that and parts that will only come in on a hook or it’s something that’s there for flavor. Like a harmony note on a certain word or phrase during a verse. Thanks for the reply.
If your track count is 120 with loads of plugins you're going to want the M4 Pro Mac Mini. I bought the base M4, the maxed out 32 Gb M4, a base M4 Pro and a maxed out M4 Pro. I own commercial recording studios so I'm picky. I bought these for my home recording studio, and they all work perfectly well for studio work. If you want high track count with loads of plugins get the M4 Pro. Edit: If you want to save a little money the $999 M4 Mac mini would be great too. 24Gb memory, 512Gb SSD with the M4 processor.
@ yeah, the more I look around, the more I’m coming to the same conclusion. I’ll probably end up getting the Mini Pro. Thanks.
@@samson7842 I just did a quick test. On the $999 M4 24Gb unified memory and 512 SSD, I was able to get an easy 150 independent audio tracks heavily loaded with plugins, and another 200 bus and aux channels. Edit: Also, the Mac Mini was stupid silent.
very nice ..stunning.
Thank you. 🙏

hi, where can i found this drum sample, you mention a sample library, is there any keyword. I dont speak english, and i only have 6 drum kit in my deluge.Thank you very much.
Oh sorry, no I made my own custom drum kit using my own sample library for this song. You can import your own samples and build your own drum kits (and synths) if you have samples lying around. The deluge should have more than just 6 drum kits included though…
