The source of the teaching of the two natures of Jesus Christ is the confession of the Council of Chalcedon (A.D. 451) as documented in the following written evidences. 1. Leo, the first bishop of Rome to claim full powers as pope, emerged as the chief spokesman for the doctrine that ultimately prevailed. He taught that Christ has two natures. At Leo's insistence, in 451 the new emperor, Marcian, called a general council to resolve the controversy. It originally met in Nicea, but because of sharp contention among bishops and the danger of violent outbreaks, the emperor ordered it moved to Chalcedon, near Constantinople, where it could be under direct imperial control... The council embraced the views of Leo, following his language closely. For the first time, a bishop of Rome, a pope, played the decisive role in a major theological dispute, guiding the decision of an ecumenical council. The creed adopted by the council states that Jesus Christ is "perfect in Godhead and perfect in manhood, truly God and truly man, that he has a rational soul and a body... " To summarize the council's decision, Christ has two natures, human and divine, but He is one person. The great commission of advancing the Sound Doctrine of Salvation (2Timothy 4:3; Titus 1:9) is the matter of the Kingdom of God and has nothing to do with standing for the doctrines of the so-called churches starting from the Catholic, the mother of the doctrine of Trinity.
