My friend had a rare VCR back in the day. He could record content from TV and the VCR would automatically stop recording as the commercials started and resumed recording when the commercials ended. I was and in hindsight, still am amazed by such a feature.

Those caps you replaced cannot in any way hurt you. You show how limited your electronics experience is. ALWAYS check the height spec of the caps when you replace them. I have been doing this.. professionally, since the 80's. Btw, the SMPTE code is always transferred when you do a capture from analog as is contains the chroma and luminance signal, along with any other data in it. Tis unit is nor special this way. I have a Panasonic and a Sony unit that does this very thing you feel is an extra hidden secret.

I never used to be a fan of combos but since i got back into crts again they are a life saver recording my favorite shows to vhs

hvr 1600 hauppauge do this, even hvr 2250 too with cc software. wiht a graph editor you can extract from your capture. this cases are vhs to pc.

There are tons of HDMI HD two-port splitters that for one reason or another split DHCP off, so you can capture. Used this with my old SF3Pro with mini-DP-to-HDMI, then the splitter, then a capture system.

I don't have any VHS, but that is an awesome tool overall, just having DHMI out makes things easier if you were into archiving. From what I can tell you can use adapters to split the video to a device that accepts HDCP and bypass it for the capture card.

I bought a DVD recorder from Good Will for $5 just for its ability to pass along RF signals through its HDMI out. Makes it a lot easier to integrate RF-only 80s game consoles into a capture or HDTV setup. It never occurred to me that its DVD recording capabilities might actually be useful for something! 😅

This is almost EXACTLY the unit I have - but I have ZV450MWB model from Feb 2007, rather than the ZV427MG9 unit from Feb 2011 in the video. There was a period of time where a huge number of electronics devices were found to have capacitors from a bad batch, and over time were faulty, like in your case. I don't recall the exact date that this happened, but I recall that there were perhaps thousands of consumer goods of all kinds that had these faulty capacitors. This may be the cause of the failure in your unit. There IS one flaw in my unit, perhaps it was corrected in yours. When I record from digital TV signal using a timer program, my unit can NOT pick up the correct channel. Rather than tuning to say channel 5-7, it might tune to channel 5-1. Also, the 'minor' channel numbers seem out of order, like 5-2, 5,3, 5-4, 5-5, 5-6, 5-1, 5-7, 5-8. I have NEVER found any way to change this behavior, so I am unable to reliably use recording by program. Still I continue to use it all the time, but sadly it doesn't have HDMI.

There's a lot of HDMI splitters than will easily strip HDCP. An undocumented feature! That and some cheap HDMI capture cards will now just ignore it too.

Magnavox are a terrific brand, what makes this one impressive to me is that this combo unit had HDMI on a DVD R/W unit and not a hdd to be seen, I have a unit that has VHS/DVDRW like this one, one that has VHS/HDD and one that has VHS/DVD/HDD, the last one is a unit I have not seen elsewhere. Plus the last one is Multi-Region which is great for me being in Australia.

I would love a modern VHS player with upscaling, HDMI and better rewinding. It's such a shame that analog tech has pretty much been lost to time.

Also on the right side if I’m right you can hookup a pair of speakers through the jack on the side marked PHONES I had found that out on mine and it was so epic where I was able to make it go from mono to stereo sound

Nice to see they didn’t skimp on LED indicators either. You were lucky to get one on most of the later VCRs and DVD players!

That’s a neat feature. I’ve owned a similar combo player for decades, it doesn’t send the captions to my TV if it’s connected with the HDMI cable for some reason. I should try digitizing my original VHS copy of The Neverending Story to see if the color closed captioning tranfers over (the Gmork speaks in green letters, freaked me out the first time I saw that)

I still have my Pioneer Elite LD player -- though it hasn't been hooked up in ten years. I also have about 200 discs in the garage (the ones that survived the flooding a few years back) that I'd really like to see on a modern 4K HDTV. To this day, I think standard DVDs of films shot on film look better (and more like the 35 mm they were made to be seen in) than most the recently sanitized, digitally scrubbed Blu-rays and 4Ks, which look like CGI animation rather than photography to me. LaserDiscs pioneered the use of letterboxing (for showing films in the proper aspect ratio) when VHS films were mostly pan-and-scan. Criterion was originally a LaserDisc company, doing things in the format (see their "reconstructed" version of Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons") that could only be done in LD.

ATI TV wonder back in the day, running software off CD, had zero copy protection checking. Which is good, because a backup copy of whatever is totally legal.

Maybe try to find "Faerie Tale Theater" tapes from the 80s. Shelly Duvall was the producer. Anyway, I know for at least TWO episodes, the closed captions were in different colors! In "The Frog Prince" played by Robin Williams, the lines spoken by the frog are actually GREEN! This is something I had no clue how to preserve, but maybe it could be with this...

That thing is amazing. And captions aren't anything to me but if I were deaf then they'd mean everything to me. There's such really cool tech gadgets out there that was made in between the time the tech was replaced by something revolutionary. I guess you could call them hybrid units, like of course the TV/VCR combo or (like what I had before MP3 players changed the world) a portable CD player with MP3 disc reader and FM radio..stuff like that where the technology peaked and was call crammed into one as the company did everything it could to stay relevant or profit on as many demands as possible. I remember back in 2002 they were selling digital cameras, like a giant polaroid camera, that burned photos to DVD..one of the weirdest things ever! Imagine the battery usage. haha And there was a very short moment in time you could buy recycled, basically resurfaced like new, music CD's for really cheap. Now people can even buy their own machines to do that, at maybe 200$. Needing to clean old music CD's isn't much of a demand and many people get games digitally now but when you factor in Sega CD, Dreamcast, Playstation, Gamecube, Wii etc etc, THAT is a lot of games you can restore. Lots of people will want to play those games again, especially with the authentic console feel, the same as they do the cartridges now.

There are more video tapes in this country than there are guns. They should continue to manufacture VCRs for the older generation and possibly some of the younger generation as well.

6:00 not entirely accurate. In the 80's they decided to cannibalize lines of video for captioning for the deaf. We started with 525 lines in the 50's. Then it was down to 512. Then to about 488 lines of actual usable video.

I have purchased 2 of these units. Neither ever worked. $$$ down the drain.

DVD-RW is not meant for writing added material to the disk over time, but rather to re-write the disk altogether (as in, to erase its content and write to it anew); what you seem to be referring to is what we call a multi-session recording, and it can be done on any disk format.

I have the exact same unit with the Funai brand name on it. Works great. It has more than paid for itself with copying old family movies to digital.

Thank you for not playing music while you were talking Any idea of why my combo unit no longer plays DVDs it seems to spin the disc one revolution and that's it I don't see the laser light so I'm not sure if the laser has gone bad it tries to spin the disc for a second and just stops or if the motor to spin the disc is bad
