Total War: Shogun 2 Game-winning strategy for any clan!
Here is my strategy guide for beating Shogun 2 that can be applied to any clan, including exceptions for things like boats, Ikko Ikki, etc. Some of the topics are deep, some may be controversial or underrated.

Enshrouded- Starting out (with tips and hidden chests)
Great video. Having comp'eted the game on Legendary/Domination with each faction, I'd like to add some comments to your tips: 1) Vassals: be careful, as your vassals conquering land adds to your fame score and it might trigger Realm Divide. 2) I personally see selling military access as an exploit and would encourage players to try and beat the game without it. 3) I think that early on you should only recruit Yari Ashigaru AND Light Cavalry. Bow Ashigaru are just not worth it, unless you are playimg as Oda (they have the strongest archers) and maybe Chosokabe and Ikko Ikki. Yari Ashigaru are great, but there comes a point where adding more Yari Ashigaru to your army will give yoy diminishing returns. For example, going from 10 Yari Ashigaru to 15, won't make your army 50% better. Here's were Light Cavalry comes into play. Light Cavalry is the most cost effective unit in the game, after Yari Ashigaru. It gives you the ability to snipe enemy generals, defeat or at least temporarily stop enemy archers, and it wins you battles by either kiting strong units away from the front line, or by charging the enemy rear for that sweet morale damage. In my opinion, the stables are THE FIRST building you should make at the start of the game, regardless of whether you start with a blacksmith/war horses provinces. So, tl;dr: early game go Yari Ashigaru AND Light Cavalry. 4) Smithing provinces. The general consensus is that you should build the armorer, and then either go with the +Attack Encampment for a mixed approach, or double down with the +Armor Encampment. This is TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE, but after having played the game for countless hours... I personally prefer Attack over Armor. Regardless of the unit, +Attack lets you kill things faster, which leads to fewer losses on your side, because the enemy morale crumbles faster. And if you build a rush army and charge the enemy head on, you can minimize the casualties you take from arrows, which is the main reason one would take Armor in the first place. The only scenario where Armor is better is if you are in a DEFENSIVE siege and the enemy has brought lots of archers. That, however, is not a battle you want to be fighting. In all other cases, killing things faster in melee is always preferable to tanking melee/arrows. Btw, I personally prefer to recruit Katana Cavalry in a Blacksmith province, rather than in one with War Horses, as the extra attack makes them extremely deadly in prolonged combat. 5) I prefer to hike taxes even on long campaigns. The reason being that, while you'll be losing money in the long run, the extra money you get NOW will help you snowball faster and kickstart your military machine and your economy. Clans that particular'y benefit from tax hiking, are the ones that start in areas with a lot of good provinces that you want to grab asap. These clans are the Shimazu/Otomo, the Oda/Tokugawa(If you break free from the Imagawa)/Hattori/Ikko Ikki (even though it's probably better you just play defensively for the first years), and the Date. The idea is that you use the extra money from tax hikes, to quickly secure the good provinces around your starting position, and then use that as a base to build your economy. 6) Not building boats: you have a point, especially considering that the AI absolutely loves to spam huge fleets, and you simply don't have the money to keep up with that. However, I would recommend you build your fleet when preparing for Realm Divide, as that will allow you to protect your coastline and detect or even outright prevent those annoying naval invasions. When building your fleet, the consensus is to build ONLY Bow Kobayas, as they are the Yari Ashigatu of ships. I won't argue with that, but my personal preference is to always go QUALITY over quantity. The AI spams ships like no tomorrow, but they're usually very weak ships. If you buid fewer, but better ships, you can manually win engagements against much larger fleets with minimal losses. When building my fleet, I like to go for Heavy Bune/Cannon Bune/Red Seal Ship/The Christian one (forgot the name). If I really need to build weaker ships, personally I'm a fan of Bomb Kobayas, even though I rarely build them. Tl;dr: don't build ships in the early game, when your focus is survival and expansion. Once you're at peace and you're preparing for Realm Divide, get yourself a proper fleet.
Thanks for the feedback/thoughts. I have some responses. 1. Vassals: Highly depends on the vassal's location/aggression, but once the third warning pops (75 fame) I agree it's time to be mindful of things that add fame like what you mentioned, plus heroic victories, more honour, etc. 2. All strategy is about exploiting one mechanic or another. Pre-RD turtling, selling access, tax cycling, yari wall. Extra koku for trade/peace deals? These are all things that can be done since the game came out, that various people might see as "bad play", "OP", "unrealistic"- or that others swear by. It would be a disservice (IMO) to have a strategy guide that said you shouldn't do it based on sentiment alone. 3. Light cav being "more cost effective" and bow ashigaru "just not worth it". Objectively, bow ashi cost less (recruit and upkeep), don't require a building/slot to access, etc. Turn-by-turn early you're spending less on bows than cav and that translates into more armies you can maintain overall to take & control more territory. Additionally, having a handful of bows can give you the means to take forts (ie provinces) without losing any units at all- all the way to the end game. This saves more koku and preserves early momentum. Bows can bait/snipe enemy generals/cavalry, have their own morale penalty, etc. Your general(s) can easily (and for zero cost) stand in for cavalry- since they're cavalry (particularly early game when money is tight). This allows you to stack projectile plus cav plus flank/rear morale penalties AND more easily trigger shock on one unit to start a roll (20% cas over 4 seconds). Any melee unit can give the larger rear attack penalty-btw, so cav (or Gens) are just adding the specific cav pen. It is easier (and cheaper overall) to build a winning strat around the two default/fundamental game units- yari and bows- and add things to it (like cav, etc) when desired and able to be afforded than to hamstring early siege offense by not having bows. You'd have to arbitrarily deem certain uses of bows as "like an exploit" to undercut their actual utility. I find it difficult- even on VH battle setting where the AI gets the highest ranged bonuses, and even just "early game"- to accept that bows aren't "worth it"- when to me they are. (both obviously ultimately subjective) 4. I usually like high armour on yari ashi so that they can distract enemy bows while my bows are busy thinning them out and can resist morale shock from whatever melee hits them using their high numbers/armour. They can get +attack from skilling up. They can't get +armour that way. Bow ashi fire more arrows per volley, which equals more chances at kills per volley and with multiple units focused on one enemy, a higher chance to trigger a shock. This circles back into 3, which I honestly cut a lot from. ;) 5. I only agree with "money now beats money later" if that is actually how it works out. I see a lot of people cycling taxes and sitting on the koku instead of spending all of it- which means they aren't actually investing it into something- which is what "mnbml" comes from. Take the money now and invest it to earn compound returns. There's a twofold problem with applying that investment phrase to this strategy for this game. Honestly if I have the time I plan on doing 2 identical plays on a low difficulty (to aid consistency) and compare cycling to not and track data for each turn. There are spreadsheets that model turns (that I mentioned) but aren't really truly comprehensive to expansion, etc. 6. My latest game as Ikko I thought about boats near the end. Maybe I could take that horse node. Maybe I could build a stack and unblock some ports. Etc. Instead I just built more armies, squashed the couple landings that happened and made more koku by taking provs and making vassals trade with me for the horses/iron/etc I had on land. It's a bit like cav for me. I can put them to use, but for the price maybe I should just hire 3 more yari and go for more territory. Sorry this was long. Thanks again for taking the time. I appreciate anyone willing to put time into laying out detailed positions.
I went to Willow Crush as shown in the map, and it looks different for me. It is a built up area, more buildings then in the part of the video that showed the 17 comfort. I think I walked all around the inside but don't recognize the 17 building. I think more buildings got added or the town changed somehow.
Oh yeah. It's definitely changed into a stronghold and the map markers I had there don't line up like they used to. Thanks for pointing that out.
@GameMnke 😁 Just the game evolving
Learned something new. Been playing this game for almost a year now. Stopped playing coz of the amount of fun they took out with bangernomics. Been thinking about playing again tho. Thanks.
Albaneve summit has some nice pre-made bases, generally in better condition than previous locations. Directly north of Brittlebush and west of Wickmouth, there's a small cabin that gives 41 comfort with just the altar flame. It's halfway up a snowy mountain, not even in the "frost" zone. To the northwest there's a pretty big village, Rothstep, for more ambitious builds, with a coal mine nearby, and amethyst veins a short walk to the east in the cliffs.
Thanks for the tip. Those areas weren't available at the time. Albaneve/etc will have to come in a later video.
I started out in Morwenna and moved on around level 20
Is there a way to use this with another mod like warfare and get it to drop non vanilla weapons?
From the looking at the code that I've done, you'd have to modify a couple json files. Probably iteminfo and definitely loottables.json. However... there may already be a mod that suits your need if you're specifically looking at warfare. Would this work? thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/CSG/CSG_Warfare_Monstrum_Epic_Loot_Support/ That hasn't been updated for 11 months, so it might be out of date, but at least it might give you a better idea of what needs to be touched to get it to work. Good luck!
@GameMnke didn't see your reply until now my b.
I really hope you make another video like this with Update 4. Even 8 months later, this is still the best by far. I think with Update 4, there's a higher priority for re-claiming a small village rather than just one building. Need space for plant and animal farms, and/or existing plots. So far I think Sunsimmer Souterrain (fosillized bone, lapislazuli, mycelium) and its clone Rose Shell Burrow (Sulfur, lapislazuli, mycelium) are really good for the mid-late game. Maybe Ft Kelvin gets a bump up for potential mid-game base. Lupa's Lair is also interesting but it's quite heavily damaged, would take a lot of rebuilding. It's certainly more challenging now we have to balance space and comfort (and laziness).
Very interesting. Thanks for bringing this up! When I did this video, Rose Shell was just under a patch of world fog that I hadn't revealed. I plan to circle back into Enshrouded- hopefully soon. It's high on my list. We've been trying to prep/move in the real world and that has overshadowed all other work for me (including my real world garlic farm...). I'm definitely curious to see the impact the changes have. Sounds like the next related video will be focused on the subject you're bringing up- the "best/easiest" locations for occupancy and development. It'll refer back to this video for base comfort across the region as I'm sure that is still relevant. Originally my plan on a solo playthrough was to occupy NE of Thornhold for a central Revelwood base due to the peacefulness and easy amber/copper. I wonder if that's enough(inn+barn) compared to Thornhold (our main/OG base). Thornhold had respawns that we'd have to wipe out until we expanded the flame, but then that blocked the resources and left us with a number of buildings we didn't need anyway. Now it sounds like that may still be the central base to have from a comfort+space standpoint. Kelvin also seems nice for buildings/space, but doesn't have a lot of default comfort (9ish, iirc). It's also one that would probably take two altars to really cover the whole place- although that isn't totally necessary.
i've been trying to win shogun 2 for like past 10 years and never had any luck, thx for this video
You're welcome. I've been contemplating doing a "first 10-20 turns" type video to help illustrate how to start a campaign off on the right foot (as well as other vids about specific combat tactics). If any of that sounds useful lemme know.
@@GameMnke well, yeah, actually. I would watch it for sure!

@@playful_banter That's awesome! Congrats! In my opinion, as long as you're enjoying the game it doesn't matter what the difficulty is on, etc. This is why we play games- to have fun. I'm happy that anything I put out there contributed in even a small way to fun/victory for someone else. Again- congrats on a well-deserved win.
@@GameMnke thank you :)
The first areas... you don't even need a glider. I got to them easily on foot, fresh start. Just ran around and headed to the left from where I started, saw a cliff edge, did a little digging to get up, went around the scavanger camp... and ran to Peaceful Acres where I set up my first base. Honestly its far more perfect as if you set your flame in the little hallway area right beside the kitchen you only cover the house, leaving the farm out front and a chest to continue to respawn. Easy spiders for silk, a little crypt with more spiders and a lot of chests for items you can disassemble for them enhance disks. And if you want to get to that bigger village you can... run there on foot. I don't get why all of these 'location' videos always start you at the tower to glide down to for 'new players' as we wont have the glider right away, nor the grapple. Heck I only just got the quest to go to that tower after a little bit of progression long after I already went to that bigger town. Just one stone, one twig, and 1 string made from fiber for a pickaxe and a few whacks onto a hill side and bam. Level 1, no clothing, and just a club and I have a fresh new home with high comfort that I am slowly modeling out to have access to the attic space.
Hey there! I specifically point out for Peaceful Acres that we can get there directly from the starter base and don't need to use the tower. Not sure how or why you missed that. HOWEVER... Secondly, we already have 11 comfort quite easily in our starter base as I show at the beginning- the first nearby bases are sidegrades comfortwise. They are more about resources and location. There's not a ton of point to moving to them until after we've freed the smith and taken that tower. More on that later. Thirdly, this wasn't a walkthrough or "newbie guide", etc. It's clearly aimed at doing one thing well: showcasing "bases with built-in comfort of 10+". It's in the title and the intro. It already comes in at ~30 mins. Adding a bunch of "newbie guide" stuff would bloat the length and dilute the premise. Lastly... I don't think your depiction that you can (or should) get to Acres with just a pickaxe and no glider at lvl 1 is at all helpful to new players. I certainly wouldn't suggest that- especially since the blacksmith (your first altar quest) is "sleeping" right next to that first tower and is more easily gotten to from the starting base area than from Acres/etc. You can craft the glider before you rescue the smith, then go right to the tower and be in position to "move on" from that starting area with that FT point in hand. Showing how easy it is to use that tower (and the starting glider) to get down to those first couple bases across the gap and using towers as jump off points (and resting on the way down) are great "bonus tips" for newer players in a video that isn't specifically aimed at that group. You claiming that "we won't have the glider right away, nor the grapple" is only true if you ignore everything the game gives you. One of the first items you can craft at the workbench (right at the top) is the starting glider AND the grappling hook. You can have the glider in less time than it takes to do something silly like trying to get to Peaceful acres without killing, looting, building or following the quests in a game that involves all of that. Good luck.
@@GameMnke I saw the whole thing. Just going by my first time playing the game. The starting quest told me to find a place to place my flame, and I went off exploring it. I didn't know they had an 'area' marked out for it... it was all fine a suitable place and so I wanted to find somewhere nice to start as is my play style, running off to find the limits I can reach and a area that looked nice. So with club in hand I explored. Found the side hill I couldn't reach without a grapple, not knowing you can get one early on I made a pickaxe and made a path up the hill and stumbled onto Peaceful Acres where I placed my flame. I like cute places like that, and it had 15 comfort when I got in there and once I parkoured to the attic space I was all Ooooo... for me, yes its perfect and ideal. Running down the path north of it crossed me into that Woodgard town. All before even getting the Blacksmith, or any cloths. Even when I got the blacksmith, I didn't get the tower, didn't know it was something I could 'get' and was more 'get home to put the blacksmith down'. Heck I found the alchemist first as they are just to the left of Woodgard and was busy with some of their fun stuff. I also thought the Shroud was a 'late game' area so when I did get the workbench and saw the glider my mind thought oh, well it lets you glide, that sounds like a later on item from a later on area. This stemming from an exploring trip that had me die instantly and didn't realized it was due to crossing into red and insta dead. I didn't learn otherwise until I was sent out to get the carpenter after stumbling on the hunter in another exploration trip and had to dive into it long enough to see oh stuff in here is my level and it wasn't going to insta kill me. Yes it may seem 'stupid' but I don't look up stuff for new games I play, I like to learn the basics on my own, and this don't seem to be all that linier as you can follow thing's in any order you want, or whatever order you stumble into like finding the alchemist first. I only just started to to look things up for examples of what others have done base building or locations and every single one starts up in that tower with the glider. To me, that's not very ' here is how you get there' and a few even state the only way to Harvest Homestead is to glide from that tower or go through the shroud, when I've gotten to Harvest Homestead within my first 20 mins of gameplay on foot with nothing but a club, barries, and a pickaxe. Sorry to unfairly bunch you in with most of the other videos that show 'good base locations'. But for me, if an area can be reached early on or for 'new players', show the way to it for such players, not ones that already have established themselves with a base and needed items. "You can reach this area in 5 minutes just by making a pickaxe and running a short ways' vs 'have a base, workbench, save the blacksmith, craft x items, get the quest to the tower that I think is after you do the quest in the shroud to take out a well? unlock the tower, THEN glide out to this area.
Look... I get that your subjective experience for the first/only time you've started isn't mirrored in all the videos you're looking up. I suggest you start a new character in a new world and see if there is something in the starter quest(s) you might have missed that would lead so many other players and content creators to think that the game wants you to put a base at the bottom of the hill right down from where you spawn in. If you don't want to do that, then maybe you could watch this video (shameless self-promotion) which I think is a great video for new players to watch- particularly just starting out. It's full of tips, shows some hidden chests, etc. Pay attention to about 90 seconds in... (but really- watch the whole thing! ;) ) ruclips.net/video/UjACqnDiaRM/видео.html If I had to suggest something for new players (truly new)- it would be that video. Honestly, knowing now that you could enter the shroud earlier and get a glider earlier (instead of mistakenly thinking all that stuff was "late game"), and all the early skill points you missed out on, should have you like "oh that's definitely worthwhile and would have made life so much easier". You should really be advocating that new players be told they can make a glider far, far earlier in the game than you JUST argued they could two posts up. I can't fathom how learning that alone doesn't change your perspective today from what it was yesterday when you apparently lacked that info. Take care.
I found the first spot just running around, there's a nice path up the side of the mountain once you make it through the shroud. It's right next to a little tower. There's even a hidden gold chest on the way. I didn't even have a glider yet. Totally wouldnt have died 100 times if I knew you could glide in lol
@@Hexatomb That sucks (the dying, obviously). Looking back at my early "building 101", I note that originally the glider/grapple were farther down the workbench under "survival" as text (like all things were in the early days). The current version puts them right up at the top as big ol' items. Maybe that change was done to help remedy some of the confusion about when they could be built. It's way more obvious now, for sure. When I first played through Enshrouded, we did it blind- wanted to play/explore/learn like the "old days" so there were two of us looking over the crafting interface, etc. Having both played Zelda: BotW, the glider caught immediate attention, so that became a priority to make. Oh yeah- we did look up one thing. The "big" fight in the capitol after we died several times. I don't remember why. Maybe there was a bug with it, or I think some of the wizard spells sucked hard at the time and one was really OP and my wife was using the sucky one. Haha.
Whats your top 3 and why? Great vid, btw.
NE of Thornhold because the location is rather central, chill, comes with some of the best comfort before going east, and it has decent access to resources you're going to want early/mid game. Thornhold also works, but has a little more fighting until you fully expand the flame. I would make one of those two my main base with crafters. Everything else is just fast travel points and therefore access and some comfort (when needed) is really all I use them for. To that extent I like Bounty Barn for being rather central in the East and having respawning resources like wheat. I actually forgot to put that in my video because I had it as a travel point for so long and just overlooked it. East Lapis would be the third of the top 3 because it is close to iron and has lots of fighting/loot/chests. Brittlebush is what I would take before getting to East Lapis. This will probably change over time. It's a little hard to have a "top 3" because places like Brittlebush/East Lapis can't be accessed early on. Blue Goblet/Glenwood's End are both great while going up the west side for getting lots of comfort. This means you could leave your starter base bare bones and just top up your comfort at an inn before jumping to whatever spire you need to. Plus with the map expanding to the north, locations that are closer to that boundary are going to get more looks. Have fun!
@@GameMnke Excellent! I'm gonna b-line over there and setup camp. I think I read an older comment of yours preferring the NE Thorn spot, but wasn't sure if that had changed. One thing I learned by mistake: try not to clear out too much in an existing house (at least to start) - it'll lower its default comfort.
im having an issue getting the mod planbuild working. the mod works and loads but im missing the plan hammer, plan totem, and sold crystal. do you happen to know how to fix it?
I haven't used that mod, but there was a recent update (Bog Witch) and PlanBuild hasn't been updated to match. On the thunderstore page for the mod there's a link to their github and some issues related to the update. github.com/sirskunkalot/PlanBuild/issues It looks like they are working on compatibility. It requires using the latest version of Jotunn as well. At this point the only thing to do is not use the mod until they update it. Good luck!
Amazing insight on the tax cycling strategy, i have more than 15 years as a TW player and I usually use this strategy to (as you say) beat it quickly but never thought about the fact that doing that just eats the growth. Excellent video man, amazing. You got a sub! Thanks for these tips.
Thanks so much! I'm really glad you liked it! Part of the goal of my channel is to look at mechanics like these in games that I love (even "old" games) and give a fresh take on it. I appreciate the support.
i do not see an unlock on any of the tables yet they are all locked.. .what is up?
Looks like there were 2 patches within a day of each other a couple days ago. Did you update and this get resolved? I just patched and logged in and everything seems to be working as normal. You unlock tables through the "upgrade table" tab as explained in the video. Still works exactly the same.
Holistically considering location (should make useful non-spire-glideable areas accessible) and resources, it feels like NE of Thornhold would be the first major base worth entirely relocating your starter base from, then Brittlebush in the mid-late game, and East Lapis in late game.
Thornhold was our main base before I did this video. NE of Thorn would probably be the future main base when I start fresh. And then I'd just use places like East Lapis/etc as places to fast travel to. Not really much need to relocate all the crafters/etc IMO.
@@GameMnke Agree, didn't realize I'd get more altar locations later on. Also, NE of Thorn has some changes - the clay is no longer directly on base, but there is a clay and copper cliff very near to the north (straight towards the shroud zone, but before entering the shroud). The location also got some giant green mushrooms monsters which look really scary but are non-aggro.
3:40 has this changed? I had an altar in peaceful acres, right next to the natural corn farm, and they seem to respawn often.
Not sure. Haven't tested it myself, wasn't able to google it up. That could be a problematic change if you built something on that spot and corn kept popping up through it.
Well I spread my outpost all across the map. If my car gets blown up or clear up my inventory I can visit the outpost. I prioritize the outpost positions in the map. That's how I play. It makes my game easy
Sounds great! Usually as I progress through a map I like to have 1-2 outposts that I can easily dump to make forward or "lootposts". I tend to find creating a "back" of cleared territory nice so I can aim whatever outposts I have toward the "front".
The building lvl35 is now a 37
With some of the city ones, if you expand your base area, it can suck in a couple more comfort here and there. (I mention that in the pinned comment)
Instructions unclear, took Kyoto turn 1, bought samurai, looted the entirety of Japan while tax pulsing and still won
As long as you had fun, I think you understood the most important lesson... Fly free, little bird. Fly...
Ive been playing Shogun 2 for a year and never knew about the downsides of tax pulsing. This video was really helpful and well done! TY
Glad you appreciated it!
If you upgrade you can not move table as will reset and you do not get mats back
It functions properly for me. I just logged in to test this out on your behalf. imgur.com/a/hMyy6wP All the mats will fall out like in the image. Without any other information, I'd wager you have another mod that is creating this conflict. I'm assuming you didn't upgrade the table, go into settings and turn off upgrades active, then remove the table. I'm not sure what that would do and I'm not going to test it since now I have to pick up all these mats and deal with that mess... ;) You can use devcommands to respawn whatever upgrade mats you lost.
nailed it dude keep it up
some guide to put VRM with r2modman
What's VRM, precious? You mean this? thunderstore.io/c/valheim/p/Mayu/ValheimVRM/ Or something else?
@@GameMnke yes that. how to put an anime skin on your character
@@Shun-Dorado The installation instructions on that link explain how to go about that. I don't play with vrms so can't speak to how well it works. Good luck!
Blue Goblet is my go to on just about every playthrough. I like some of these other places I didn't know about too!
I'm a sucker for lots of amenities and very few cobwebs. ;)
I think mostly everybody are going to play with mods installed, so some advice is null.
Look, I appreciate the feedback. If you'd like me to give a strategic breakdown of a specific mod/modpack, maybe suggest one and if I like it, maybe I'll do that. Otherwise, I'm not sure what you want me to do with your feedback. There is no specific chapter you can point to that is, or even might be, "null advice" because it totally depends on what mods someone is using- agreed? If you're just doing the bug fixes like I am (oda umbrella, kisho ninja, etc), then it's all applicable. If you just mod to make boats cheaper, maybe only that element changes. If, however, you're playing with total conversions/overhauls (MoSS, Radious) then CLEARLY there are going to be many elements that have to be adapted- just like how not all of the strategy is wholecloth applicable to RotS or FotS (or WH3). Because it's not an identical game at that point. I don't think it's incumbent upon me to make such a disclaimer though- because it's obvious. I don't find myself compelled to post on MoSS videos "hey this doesn't work like that in vanilla- null advice!". ;) More importantly... I think there is HUGE value in the core/default/vanilla game and understanding the default mechanics. If all you play is a mod, without understanding what the mod is changing, then you really don't have a basis of comparison for anything in Shogun 2 because you can't speak to what things were to recognize what is different. In that regard when you look at the core strategy I present and you note "hey my mod does this different", you now know something more than you did before. And then you can make a value judgement- do you like the change? Do you find the change necessary to your enjoyment? Etc. That's the best I can do with what you gave me. If you shared "hey I play with mod X and this is different in Y way", then we could have a more substantive exchange over a specific issue. I'll point out, for example, that one of the big economic "features" of Shogun 2 is, I feel, badly implemented. It's how rice fields and market chain buildings work. RotS and FotS addressed this. I love Shogun 2, but it's one of the biggest flaws- err... features. I still like to play the game with this "feature" because if you're talking to people and they are asking questions about vanilla play (which happens plenty on reddit), if you're not able to speak to vanilla play/strategy, then really... what good is the advice you're giving? You might struggle to tell someone the benefits of vassals or how to use a matchlock if your only context is playing with mods. So that's what I have to say about that. Have fun!
i prefer having level 3 upgraded forts for all my provinces with fully upgraded farms. For economic provinces, you can build a sake den, a market, and a temple/church. For military provinces, you can build a stable, a yari, and armorer; or a bow, powder, and hunting lodge at least for the 8 core provinces then just vassals to increase trade income
All that fort upgrading is taking a lot of food out of the system (which means less growth/koku across your domain) as well as a lot of koku spent on building. You only need 5 of each market/etc to recruit the max amount of agents and you can spread that around through level 1 fort provs. (that's if you even wanted max ninja/monks) Part of the benefit of upgrading a fort is added recruitment slots, which you're really only going to be taking advantage of (or should be) in military provs. Temples and sake dens alone aren't adding enough to your economy to offset the economic drain of expanding a fort to make room for them. There usually has to be some other reason. Omi would be a good example of a fertile province, with the ninja village, that would make sense for both a market and a sake den. You need the den to recruit the better ninja, the village provides some added income, and it'll probably be one of you wealthier provinces overall- perfect for a metsuke/market. Plus having a stronger fort adjacent to Kyoto helps as you build up when it seems a lot of enemies want to attack you there. Obviously this makes more sense for the clans that are close to Omi (e.g. Oda) and less sense for clans that are only reaching it closer to mid/end-game. They probably already have whatever ninja/money provs set up. It's that level of intentionality that I think is important when deciding what fort to upgrade- particularly on Very Hard or Legendary difficulty. On lower difficulties it probably doesn't matter as much. Units cost less to recruit/upkeep, etc.
@@GameMnke i see.. i'm just comfortable defending sieges with level 3 forts. that additional layer gives me security from full stacks... the additional garrison units of spears and archers with a naginata warrior monks are a godsend right now, i'm doing a VH Ikko Ikki revolt only campaign until realm divide triggers. it's fun to just do a turtle strategy
@@Byenie0912 Well the Ikko Ikki is a different play in many ways. I'm also on an Ikko VH campaign atm. I definitely like the jodo shinshu temple's warrior monk garrison. I do agree that defending sieges with a level 3 fort is great. Particularly Kaga with the back door so you can run down the generals. But that's the military prov- and a great bottleneck- so I always upgrade that province. In my game I just took Owari and Oda stacked that place out. However the farm was barely upgraded, so it ended up sucking up some of my excess food. It'll be a great bottleneck for that region though. I plan on putting a temple in there as well. That's always one of my concerns late game in that sometimes you'll be taking over forts that the ai has upgraded but with crappy farms. On one hand there's less reason to make room for markets- so there's that. On the other hand, the Ikko struggle with money once RD hits, and markets give some money without much downside. At this point I haven't actually built any myself. I just inherit ones occasionally. Ikko is definitely a fun campaign. I'm already past the realm divide penalties. I just have to revassal a couple who turned on me- the rest are fixed or new. Good luck with your game!
That's where I made my 2nd base at in Wescott., the only remaining original building from the original village is the small house that is on a hill which I made it as the Famers house, everything else was torn down and made into new village, built new buildings and then some.
the problem with the strategy is in legendary difficult the ai always destroy merchant guild or rice exchange and replace it with yari drill yard or archery range pro player usually only build rice exchange or merchant guild in province that already has sword school or any other unit training facility
Hey thanks for the comment. I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to- making vassals? Not upgrading market chain buildings? Focusing military in military provs? Can you be more specific?
@@GameMnke what i mean is pro player not upgrade castle or make special province for training unit especially if you use mod to make ai only training katana samurai instead of yari samurai
@@GameMnke usually on real legendary difficult with mod ai you will never win decisive victory or heroic victory the enemy ai daimyo only move with 40 army and its un defeated army because full katana samurai match lock and yari cavalry and the enemy raid squad always destroy market or rice exchange even destroy farm

Is possible to learn more skills in-game? More than the five they started? Thanks for the tips \o
Survivors can't have more than 5 skills, but you can roll a survivor with 4 and pick up their 5th skill in-game. For example, you can teach them computers from a cell tower or chemistry from an ammo outpost. This is particularly nice if you roll a great survivor without a 5th skill. There are also mysterious traders that can sell retraining textbooks to retrain one of your four core skills (say if you really wanted powerhouse), or a rare skill trader that offers 5th skill special books- e.g. hygiene or lichenology. The mysterious traders are only Friday thru Monday (real world time)! Note: you can't ever replace a 5th skill with a different 5th skill. Once you picked one- it's locked in. Wiki for outposts: state-of-decay-2.fandom.com/wiki/Outposts Wiki for traders: state-of-decay-2.fandom.com/wiki/Wandering_Traders?so=search#Mysterious_Wandering_Traders Have fun!
If u like trading , i recommend a farm, or hydroponics maxed out, even 2 hydroponics! Save your outposts for ammo and fuel! Max out ammo outposts and u can also craft 2 ammo if have the munitions perk! Its easy then. I only play on nitemare tho and it's still easy. Wish I could get those nexus modds for xbox would make all plague hearts black 😂
Just to reiterate... Food scales with difficulty ONLY for food outposts. Ammo doesn't scale. Farms don't scale (unless you play green). If you like trading and are playing on NM or Lethal, shouldn't your aim be to pick outposts that give you extra resources over those that don't and then... trade for what you need? And if you don't like trading, but don't necessarily dislike it- should you still ignore (overlook) food outpost scaling? Like if I want to own Squelones in Meagher and run brews around for influence, trade, etc, sure... maybe I want some EXTRA food. But on NM I wouldn't avoid food outposts- it's the main resource I'd be converting into influence. So the answer in that situation might just be "why not both?". But in almost all cases you should be taking food outposts on NM/Lethal- because they scale- unless you're specifically trying to handicap yourself.
hey, so i want to mod valheim, but i want my friend to play, now if he joins my game with only me havong mods installed does he get to use the mods, or will he have to download all the mods too, also does this work if i dont basically pay for a server and just invite him through steam ?
It depends on the mod. You'll want to both have mods and dependencies installed if you're looking at something that mods items like Epic Loot. (Epic Loot explicitly states this) If you were the only person handling the farming and you run farmgrid, you buddy wouldn't need to install that. You should be able to host (start server- give it a password if need be) and your friend should be able to find you through the join game tab under friends once you are in game. If it's a fresh start you may need to way until you're on the valkyrie. Have fun!
Dude, do you have a video on how to make rune stones? Please send me a link
Hey there... You get runestones from killing bosses additional times and sacrificing their trophies (heads) at the enchanting table. Sometimes Haldor sells runestones. The higher tier the boss, the higher tier the runestone from their trophy. Bonemass is the first Epic boss. Yagluth is the first Legendary boss in terms of sac'cing their trophy.
@@GameMnke Yes, now I understand everything, thank you
Don’t understand the mods in weapons and armour?
That's from the Epic Loot mod. It adds item enchanting and drops to the game. One of my favorite mods. All the chapters in the video except the last pertain to both vanilla and epic loot. The last is epic loot specific. Yay for Brittlebrush and Emily's tavern! I want to rebuild it for her.
It's a great location. I like adding a bunch of buildings into the "sphere" by upping the altar.
Handy for someone coming back from a long hiatus. Nice work as well, thats a sub.
Much appreciated!
I came over from Reddit. The first video itself was quite instructional regarding a variety of the game's facets. Would definitely try to go through the rest of the videos in the walkthrough, over time.
Thank you. I will probably make some shorter videos just talking about specific subjects (e.g. vassals, "first five turns", etc). Getting this longer form "out of my system" helped me reconnect with and reverify the strategies I used back when I played a lot more. It's a little funny to me now watching me say things like "shaking off the rust" in this video when I know how it ends. I think I was nervous about jumping back in on Very Hard. But honestly, wiping out early doesn't matter. Just start again and iterate until you nail the openning handful of turns. Anyway. Enjoy and good luck on your campaigns!
@@GameMnke Would you be kind enough to point me to a video of yours on Shogun 2 where you were the attacking force and were outnumbered, if any such exist?
@@debopamchatterjee6905 Here's one where I popped out of the fort to hit an Ikko army. They only had a couple more units than I, and no general. ruclips.net/video/v2Px85saw3k/видео.htmlsi=fLyqgoVCCizl8vZM&t=1141 War vs Sakai (episode 6) starts with having to cut off a full stack supporting a siege. We both have 20 units (technically he has 21), but he has almost half samurai in his stack vs my all ashigaru. ruclips.net/video/2SnNrafwqj8/видео.html Episode 7 kicks off 2 mins in with me fighting another stack where 70% are samurai vs my all ashigaru stack. It's a big mistake letting all those yari sams charge downhill at my units. Probably one of the worst battles I had at that point, with a suprise at the end. ;) I also talk about rice exchanges/markets in that episode. Eventually with Oda you're in a situation where you should have more units overall because you're fielding quanty. This does present a challenge to command the number of units, but gives you bulk over the enemy. That said there are a couple multi-stack battles (ep 11 and 15) where we still have even numbers but are taking on loads of samurai with our increasingly armoured ashigaru. You can see (I can anyway) the evolution of better unit management from 7 up to that foggy fight vs Hatakeyama in 15 where I roll him hard. Hope that helps!

My vassals tend to build a strong army, then rebel and attack me. My philosophy is, if they are weak enough to accept being a vassal, they are weak enough to conquer.
Good philosophy. A lot of vassal behavior depends on the vassal and what part of the game you're in. Some clans carry a grudge against you (e.g. Imagawa if you're Oda). Once you hit RD all your vassals will get the ticking realm divide penalty and eventually flip- some faster than others. Keeping tabs on their relation score helps with bribing ("gifts") to keep them in line and knowing who you have to revassal and when. The nice thing is if they flip and move their army away from their fort- you can storm the fort with your army, revassal (removing the RD penalty) and their army will stay intact so that they can help you police any subsequent rebels. I had one vassal last game that I was concerned about (the Hatano). They took out one of my vassals that flipped (fine) and wound up with a full stack of their own (also fine), but realm divide was building. The turn before they themselves flipped they put that stack in the way of my main rival (the Hatakeyama). Both armies wrecked themselves making it easy for me to clean up the situation.
So what do you think? Did this provide any insight into a mechanic you weren't aware of? Do you have some insight to share? Anything I overlooked? Do you wanna build a spreadsheet? (ala Frozen) ;) One editorial note: when I mention "income" for farm fertility, I'm really referring to "wealth". Wealth is the base number. The amount you get from taxes+metsuke on that wealth- that is "income". Technicalities.
What's the max amount of outposts?? I've got 5 now and it would be nice to have like 2 more....
4 from a max upgraded Command Center, +1 from the antenna OR +2 from the signal booster facility mod (only one), +1 from a red talon contractor with Hacking quirk. So max of 7 for the normal campaign if you can pick up the Hacker. Heartland (the story mode in Trumbell) lets you have max 8, but you can't have more than 7 elsewhere/normally.
Yea, you can safely assume 5. You should be able to get a signal booster mod from a network trader if you see one, but that's rng. But if you get it then you will have 6. And like he said the red talon hacker skill. But there used to be a thing you could do, hitting multiple buttons at once while installing a mod on the base screen, and it would put a mod in a building that couldn't typically have it. So I would have antennas everywhere, max was always 8 though, you just didn't need the upgrades or the hacker skill
I appreciate this video cause I'm having a really hard time finding a place to build but never really considered adopting a house or area and building it up/enhancing it. Kept thinking I had to build from scratch to be satisfied
Glad you like it! It's a great feature in the game.
I know im super late to this but i have a question. Is it kinda a weak strategy if i have 5 outposts, one supplies power, one supplies water, i have the lab landmark so i can produce scentblock and i have an artillery outpost and i keep an open outpost slot for when i need a specific skill on the fly or if i need to deposit loot quickly then leave the outpost?
Thanks, was a helpful video.
I never heard of r2modman, I don't think it's necessary for me. What I was looking for with Thunderstore, as I am transferring a mod profile from one PC to another with GP, is which target file in the Valheim folder you point Thunderstore too. My last PC had no issues modding, but I apparently linked the manager to the wrong launcher and was unable to use console commands, which is pretty important for Valheim. In Thunderstore, it's under -settings>profile or location (I forget because its been years) and then you just navigate to the correct launcher file. Done. You then just installed the essentials you pointed out to make the mods work, and your done. I have 45 mods working in harmony with my old PC, but on my Ryzen 7800x3D with a RX 7900 XTX, I want to make sure I have things set up right for 4k at over 120 fps. Do you understand what I am saying? Which is the right directory folder in -Xbox Games>Valheim>?. Would appreciate your help if you have a moment.
r2modman is identical to the thunderstore branded mod manager except for one difference- r2 doesn't have ads. What is GP? Do you have it pointing to gamelaunchhelper.exe in the "xboxgames/Valheim/content" folder? Everything I looked up about adding "-console" to the game was pointing at that executable. I don't play Valheim on xboxpc, but that's the same excutable Starfield uses (a game I do play on xbox pc). If you're trying the manager again at some point and you want mods AND console access on xbox pcpass- you might need the mod "dev commands" or "enable console" to get access to them on xbox with r2. "Necessary?" No. But easier to troubleshoot? This remind me of that scene from Dodgeball... ;) Lemme know if any of that worked or if I'm offbase on understanding what you're trying to accomplish.
This was insightful, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This really helps for a beginner like me! Thanks
Happy to help!
Knowledge of computers = programing = more outposts
