Chicago's Daniel Ivankovich is the Most Interesting Man Alive
Most people would be ecstatic to accomplish one impressive thing in their lifetime, but Daniel Ivankovich has decided he wants to catch them all.
But besides the Big-10 basketball, radio, and music, he's spent a good chunk of his life trying to make life in Chicago better for its residents. Even better yet, he does it in style.

Chicago is the City of Big Shoulders, Among Other Nicknames
Просмотров 262Месяц назад
I get pretty bored of seeing the phrase “The Windy City” on marketing fliers, so I went out in search of Chicago’s best and worst nicknames. I’m quite proud of living in the City of Big Shoulders, but a little less proud of the names developed by Choose Chicago (the tourism agency for the city). Why this Old Bridge in Downtown Chicago Hasn't Been Dismantled
Просмотров 2 тыс.Месяц назад
I've walked past this old bridge off of Kinzie Street many times, and always questioned why an old hunk of metal is left there hovering in a raised position. So I did a little digging, and learned why the Kinzie Street railroad bridge (as well as the St. Charles Air Line Bridge and Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad Bridge) hasn't been scrapped. www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20151119/downto...

The Fascinating Diagonal Streets that Break up Chicago's Grid

Chicago's horizontal and vertical grid is broken up by a few major diagonal streets. I wanted to know: why did these exist, and is there any benefit to them? As it turns out, there is some fascinating history behind many of these, many of which were former Native American trails. Chicago's 5500% Growth in 50 Years and Where It's Headed in the 2020s
Просмотров 448Месяц назад
Chicago's population went from 250 in 1830 to 30,000 in 1850 to 1.7 million in 1900. But then, it peaked at 3.6 million in 1950, only to decline to roughly 2.6 million today. Looking at the historic trends into the future, is Chicago on a downward trajectory? After some analysis, the numbers may not be what they seem at first glance.

Much of the design was predicated on the areas use until the mid 70s. The entire area had been tracks and train yards for Dearborn station. The elevation of Roosevelt road was to go over the tracks. No roads ran east to west from Polk to Roosevelt because of the tracks. The elevation ramps for south bound traffic from Clark and westbound traffic from Roosevelt started at different locations when the neighborhood was developed and there was no stoplight on Clark between Polk and Roosevelt. All of this contributed to the area's design when built in the 70s.

Thank you for warning people that CTA elevators are also homeless urinals. Consider bringing a couple bungee cords to secure your bike as well in the event you get a seat and there's a blank space to secure your bike. This is also Handy for Metra trains.

El trains don't have a rack 😁. Still I suggest bringing a couple of bungee cords if you're on a long ride and you have a seat. This will allow you to secure your bike. Metra also recommends using bungees.

@ Thanks for the info! I actually meant the ones on the fronts of the CTA buses, the first time using them is stressful because you kind of have to hold up the whole bus to load your bike… still haven’t had to do it yet. I’ll have to remember to bring along a couple bungees with me next time I take the el or Metra with my bike.

I love this video so much! In the 1st picture (0:24), it's hard to see the changes because of all the taller buildings that match the sky, so they just blend in, making it look like not much changed. At 1:37, the Bally's Casino used to be a dance club in the 2000's, the Thompson Center at 2:53 is either hated or loved. Me, it was different, but not really my taste. What's nice is that Google will keep the shape, but change the colors (more blue) when it is redone. 4:15 And, yes, the infamous and ugly Sun Time building. I hated it, but I loved how the IBM building stuck out behind it. I loved the IBM building so much! Granted, the Trump Tower eventually covered it, and I have a ton of pictures of it going up! Anyways, great video! Keep up the great work!

This is about cold, snow and shopping. The pedways will be open just as the shops are open where they are part, below or attached to a office building or apartment. Australia does not have the bad weather that drives pedways in all the US and Canadian great lakes cities yet Australia still has several pedways. More are planned. They are also common in Scandinavia and parts of Russia. Technically when a building is built or renovated it pays for the road out to the midline, the foot paths and any pedway or skyway. In Houston Texas its all about the searing summer heat. How you found and only photographed the empty sections is amazing.

This trail has a few mild street sections in between but it goes all the way to Green Bay Rd. in Evanston. The new Evanston Skatepark is there at the end (on the East side of the channel park system). Cross Green Bay at Evanston Skatepark and you can cross the golf course bridge and take Poplar a short distance to the Green Bay trail, formerly the North Shore Electric Railway. Take that to Wisconsin, or just before Ravinia it connects to the Botanic Garden and North Branch trail system at the Skokie Lagoons. You can basically make a giant loop of it from where you started this video.
